Nokia N95 blushes a bright red for us
2008-01-08 15:44:00
It's not quite as technologically interesting as the N95 8GB for North America, but bright, pretty colors can certainly sell as many phones as a good chunk of internal ROM can. We spotted an in-your-face red N95 at the Nokia booth of Digital Experience this evening, and guess what? It's not custom painted, it's not some sort of funky special edition -- it's real, it's coming, and more importantly, it's coming here. Word on the street we'll see it before the first quarter's out for $599, implying that there's a little price drop for N95s of all colors in the cards for the near future.

Hands-on with Sennheiser MX W1 wireless earbuds
2008-01-07 15:43:00
If you've got $600 burning a hole in your regrettably flammable pockets, and if you've got a medically recognized phobia of wires, you've probably already been considering Sennheiser 's MX W1 wireless earbuds. While we're not going to try to sway your purchasing decision one way or the other, we did want to share a couple shots of the beauts. You're probably most interested in the receiver and, for example, how it sizes up compared to a new iPod nano. Well, we just so happen to have some pics of precisely that, so click on through and sate your insatiable curiosity.

Hands-on with Smartparts' 32-inch digital photo frame
2008-01-06 15:40:00
We had a pretty good idea of just how large a 32-inch digital photo frame would seem, but it's not until you see this thing up close and in person that you realize just how absurd it truly is. Don't believe us? Check it out below and see for yourself.

First African satellite launched
2007-12-26 08:37:00
In a landmark launch that will supposedly "contribute to bridging the digital divide within Africa and between Africa and the rest of the world," the continent's first satellite successfully made it into orbit aboard a French-made rocket last night. The so-called RASCOM-QAF1 -- named after the Regional African Satellite Communication Organization which is funding the venture -- lifted off from the European space base in Kourou, French Guiana stowed inside an Ariane 5, the sixth such launch this year and 36th overall of that particular model, manufactured by Paris-based Arianespace. The new 3.2-tonne (7,055-pound) satellite is set to serve the large African rural market neglected by traditional cellphone carriers, and will allegedly save hundred of millions of dollars a year currently being paid to foreign operators.[Via PhysOrg]

Tesla clarifies "temporary transmissions," say they're slower, not going to
2007-12-23 07:58:00
We'd heard that problems with the Tesla Roadster's transmission were going to lead the company to ship the cars with "temporary" transmissions, but our friends over at AutoblogGreen were recently contacted by Tesla and told that while the company is indeed considering shipping cars with a different tranny than originally planned, they won't be designed to fail, as we'd originally heard. Rather, it'll be a single-speed transmission that won't allow the all-electric hot rod to run as fast as the planned two-speed version. Tesla still plans to swap out the units for the real deal when they're finally strong enough to handle the electric's massive torque, but at least now when Tesla owners are stranded by the side of the road they'll just need an extension cord, not a whole new transmission.

Outi bone-conducting headphones actually look reasonable
2007-12-22 07:57:00
We've seen quite a few bone-conducting headphones, and apart from a couple pricey exceptions, they've all brought the ugly pretty fierce -- enough so that we were actually surprised when we saw these new Outi headshakers from Zelco and didn't immediately flinch. The active headphones clip onto the back of your ears and transmit sound through the skin and cartilage, creating what the company calls a "sensual new surround sound." We're not exactly sure what that means, but it's generated by a battery-powered amp that runs for six to eight hours on a 90-minute charge, and it's yours now $110 in limited quantities.[Via Popular Mechanics]

Pixel Lab unveils 17-inch RippleNote PLK570 gaming laptop
2007-12-20 11:58:00
Earlier this month, we caught wind of a unique new laptop from Korea's own Pixel Lab, and while it's easy to see how the lid design could be a love / hate affair, we've great news for those leaning towards the latter. Apparently, the firm is rolling out another in the RippleNote lineup, this time with a top that exemplifies smoothness. The 17-inch PLK570 rocks some pretty decent hardware too, including a WXGA+ (1,440 x 900) panel, a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, NVIDIA's GeForce 8700M GT, 160GB 7,200RPM SATA drive, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, gigabit Ethernet and WiFi to boot. Furthermore, you'll find niceties such as Bluetooth, a multicard reader, DVI / S-Video outputs, FireWire and audio in / out ports. We're still not convinced it's worth the ?2.3 million ($2,466) asking price, but we'll leave that one up to you.[Via MobileWhack]

Riddell starts shipping concussion-monitoring football helmets
2007-12-19 11:55:00
We've seen a couple helmet systems that monitor impacts -- including prototype football helmets -- but Riddell is bringing the tech to market with the Revolution IQ HITS (Head Impact Telemetry System) helmet, which contains a system of sensors that stores data about the last 100 impacts, which can later be wirelessly transmitted to a laptop for analysis. Up to six $999 helmets can be linked to each $299 HITS receiver, and players and trainers can access data via a web app for later evaluation. The helmet is shipping now, and apparently the University of Missouri and several other NCAA schools have already placed orders.[Via Technology Review]

Update party: Zune firmware 2.3, Nokia internet tablets get OS2008
2007-12-19 11:50:00
Heads up, Zune sters. Prepare for improved device recognition and improved reliability during sync (though not much else, apparently), because your 2.3 firmware has arrived. This update also fixes battery issues that some 30 / 80 users have been having, improving battery life with more power efficient codecs, which should come as a big relief. Wipe the tears of joy away from your eyes and go get your little buddy Zuned, er, tuned up. Nokia fans, you also get a cookie today -- in the form of the first official update for your beloved internet tablet, the N810. Nokia hasn't forsaken early adopters either, as N800 and 770 users get to reap the benefits and bug fixes of the OS update, too.[Thanks, Kevyn, Ryan]

Sixty years ago today: transistors -- and modern electronics -- were born
2007-12-18 12:11:00
Like transistors? You must -- you're using a few million (or billion) right now just reading this sentence. But it's actually difficult to overstate the transistor's importance since its invention exactly 60 years ago today by super nerd gods John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley -- everything changed when solid state circuits were finally able to replace mechanical relays and vacuum tubes. There's little doubt electronics and technology as we know it today are only possible because of this fundamental discovery, although 60 years on we can only seem to navel gaze about what sorts of real jobs we'd all have if we weren't just spending our days obsessing about the gadgets these transistors power.

BenQ's DC-X835 sneaky 8 megapixel anti-shaker
2007-12-18 12:10:00
BenQ is back with another digital snapper ready for action during the holidays. At least we think so -- no price or availability were announced. Nevertheless, the DC-X835 is an 8 megapixel version of their DC-X735 slimster. As such, you're looking at a 3x smc Pentax optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD, and a "unique" Super Shake Free mode. So unique they can't tell us whether it's optical, mechanical, digital, or what. Toshiba's Qosmio G40 now with world's first HD DVD-RW drive
2007-12-17 12:09:00
Notice anything special about that laptop up there? No besides it's monstrous footprint. Right, a world's first HD DVD-RW drive in a laptop. Otherwise, it's the same 17-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Qosmio G40 we know and love now topping out with a 2.2GHz T7500 Core 2 Duo, up to 400GB of disk and 4GB of memory, and a pair of terrestrial HDTV tuners with HDMI-out in a 10.6-pound slab of media action. Priced at about ¥400,000 ($3,530) nicely equipped.[Via Impress]

Forget HDMI and DisplayPort -- Kleer and USB now vying for that HDTV link
2007-12-17 12:08:00
Ugh, is DRM coming to shackle USB too? You betcha. The USB Implementer's Forum is planning to rollout a variant of tethered USB in 2008 to carry compressed high-def video between TVs and mobile devices. It appears unrelated to USB 3.0 and targets both laptops and personal media players -- however you might choose to define that. A spokesman for the organization said that developers "could layer HDMI's HDCP encryption on top." So it's not definite. But with the studios fighting hard to "protect" their content, well, it's a given that some form of DRM will be there. The new USB linkage is meant to complement HDMI which primarily carries uncompressed video between living room A/V equipment... and an increasing number of media-centric laptops. Thing is, DisplayPort, expected to make a big showing at CES in January, already comes with a slathering of HDCP and is the purported VESA standard for moving HDTV from your laptop to a digital television. To confuse matters more, Kleer Corp i...

iDiamond ear: $6,400 earbuds don't come any cheaper
2007-12-16 07:35:00
We were never too hip with the precious metals, and we can't say we're doing any better with this setup. The iDiamond ear, built by Heyerdahl jewelry, is slicked up with 18 karat gold and 204 diamonds, but we can't help but seeing a pair of cheap headphones with glitter on them -- with a $6,400 pricetag slapped on just for kicks. Good thing we're not filthy rich, we'd be so terrible at frittering away our cash.

Luxury, meet ridiculous: the Mobiado Luminoso battery cover flash drive
2007-12-16 07:32:00
If you're carrrying around a Mobiado Luminoso cell phone, it's a safe bet you might be interested in Bissol's brass-encased 4GB flash drives -- so why not jack the ritz factor by combining them in Mobiado's new battery cover for the Luminoso, which features a storage / display compartment for the included drive? That's right -- Mobiado asked itself what its customers wanted, and came up with a custom battery cover that only holds an opulent brass flash drive. Damn, we knew we weren't exactly the target market, but you'd think they'd at least try to go quadband first.

Nissan's GPS-enabled cruise control foreshadows robot cars
2007-12-16 07:24:00
Nissan has really upped the ante when it comes to driver-assisting luxury amenities. While everybody else is busy with souped-up cruise control based on radars (those old things), Nissan has tapped into onboard GPS to allow the car slow down for upcoming turns, and then resume a cruising speed once the turn is done. It's called Intelligent Cruise Control , and will most likely be seen as a happy upgrade to some drivers and a curse upon the road to others. We just want a fully-automated car, so do what it takes, Nissan.

Tesla to deliver Roadsters with "temporary" transmissions?
2007-12-14 15:32:00
The Tesla Roadster was supposed to be out before the end of the year, but it looks like the wicked-fast electric car won't make that target -- apparently the company is having problems finding a transmission strong enough to handle gear shifts while the car remains at full torque. The problem is somewhat unique to electric cars, and Tesla's got two different suppliers scrambling to find a solution -- but in the meantime, the company is considering providing vehicles outfitted with "temporary" transmissions that are basically guaranteed to fail after a few thousand miles. The first of these has already been built for company chairman Elon Musk, and Tesla is deciding whether to start shipping cars with the temporary units to other customers and then replacing them when a final transmission becomes available. That's the price of progress, we suppose, but something tells us quite a few people would rather just wait for the final product.

Nokia's N-Gage hits the N81 next week in pre-release form
2007-12-14 15:31:00
It's a good time to be an N81 or N81 8GB user, since Nokia's got some pre-release versions of full N-Gage titles just for you as of next week. Nokia's hoping for some feedback with this "N-Gage First Access" setup, since the full service isn't quite ready to go yet. Of course, the N81 has game demos on it out of the box, but this time it'll have "exclusive access to the pre-release version of the N-Gage application and one or more N-Gage games!" They're certainly taking their own sweet time getting the relaunch of N-Gage ready, but given the failure of its first two iterations, perhaps we should be grateful Nokia's waiting to get it right this time. But seriously, hurry up already.[Via NokNok; thanks James B]

Addonics offers peace with external HD DVD / Blu-ray drive
2007-12-14 15:28:00
Combo drives made specifically with computers in mind aren't unheard of or anything, but they're still a long ways from being a dime a dozen, so we figured it was worth the time to check out Addonics' latest. This peace maker plays back HD DVD, Blu-ray, DVD and CD, but it will only burn to the latter two; also, it's available with eSATA or eSATA / USB 2.0 interfaces, and it should play nice with Windows, OS X and Linux-based rigs. If you're wondering about speed, it can reportedly toast CD-Rs at 48x, CD-RWx at 32x, DVD±R at 16x, DVD±RW at 8x and DVD±R DL at 2.4x. Both of these suckas are available now for $409 / $429 depending on your choice of interface, and trust us, you never know when having something like this around will totally save the night.

Nokia's Eco Sensor concept gets right with the greens
2007-12-10 14:19:00
In the slow crawl of news leading up to our annual CES blowout, we bring you this, the Nokia Eco Sensor concept device. The device consists of two parts: a wearable mobile phone (duh, it's Nokia) with giant display and a remote sensing unit which keeps tabs on your health and external environment. Nokia research envisions that the sensor unit would be worn on a wrist or neck strap made of solar cells. It would then communicate back to your phone via near field communications (NFC) or RFID. What you monitor (i.e., the sensors you get) will be customizable based on user preference. You know, like the burn from your jetpack and rate of your daily food replication. Thanks for the look into the future Nokia, now get back to your S60 development please, time's a'wastin'.[Via Unwired View]

Activision replacing mono Guitar Hero III discs for Wii
2007-12-10 14:18:00
Good news! Turns out your right ear wasn't insane after all. Apparently, Activision has simultaneously fessed up to the lack of stereo on "some" Guitar Hero III discs for the Wii and offered to make amends. Company spokeswoman Rhy-Ming Poon stated that the firm "recently became aware that some consumers have not been able to enjoy the full audio output in the Nintendo Wii version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock," and added that it was "currently working with Nintendo and planning to issue an improved audio experience in future versions of the game." For users who already bought in, these re-mastered discs should be available at no cost sometime in early 2008, but specifics beyond that weren't disclosed. So yeah, at least you can count on a stereo version hitting your mailbox, but unfortunately, it won't be before the holiday break.[Thanks, Jason]

Panasonic to bundle (discounted) Blu-ray players with plasmas -- 2 new play
2007-12-10 14:16:00
Although coy with any detail, Panasonic just put the industry on notice with its Blu-ray plans for the US. In a move to double its Stateside market share, Panny will begin bundling Blu-ray players with their plasma TVs next week. The move specifically targets Circuit City and Best Buy among other big-box retailers and "may" result in a discount. This according to Masayuki Kozuka, a general manager in charge of the company's storage device strategy. We'll take that as a confirmed discount. After all, without a price drop, why bother -- it's not like profile 1.1 support will be the cause for that huge upsurge in sales. A Panasonic spokesman also said that they would release two new "higher-end" (read: more expensive) Blu-ray players in January. We'll likely hear more on that little nugget at CES.

Toshiba's new 128GB SATA SSDs -- hello, SanDisk?
2007-12-10 14:12:00
128GB of SSD. You long for it, you need it, and with any luck you'll have it when Toshiba starts churning 'em out for production by May. The new 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch MLC NAND slabs with SATA interfaces will ship in three capacities: 32GB, 64GB, and the big daddy 128GB. The new SSDs are based on the new 56-nm processes announced back in January. Of course, with Toshiba and Sandisk bedfellows in flash we're also expecting a SanDisk announcement on the quick -- certainly no later than CES in early January. No prices announced, though we anticipate the year-over-year reductions to continue, right boys?[Via Impress]

Jeep readies rugged GPS RT 300 for January release
2007-12-09 07:27:00
It's a Jeep -branded GPS -- did you really expect it to look any less barbaric? 'Course, we're pretty sure those infatuated with the brand won't find anything to kvetch about, and after all, this uber-rugged navigator will withstand more dirt, dust and bumps that your average Garmin. The GPS RT 300 is slated to launch sometime next month for $399, and in exchange for payment you can expect a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen, an integrated media / text viewer, one million POIs, turn-by-turn voice guidance and loads of off-road credibility. Okay, so that last feature isn't guaranteed, but we feel tougher just looking at it.

Samsung's BD-P1400 Blu-ray player sinks below $300
2007-12-09 07:26:00
With prices on HD DVD players in a perpetual state of free fall, it was only a matter of time before the slashings bled over to the other camp. Sure enough, Samsung's fairly well spec'd BD-P1400 -- which was announced at $549 and sold at $499 in late August -- has sunk to $298.76 at Amazon. In case you needed a refresher, this one's packing 1080p24 support, Dolby Digital Plug / True HD, DTS HD, HDMI 1.3, 1080p DVD upconversion and a pretty snazzy design, too. And hey, if you need extra incentive, there's always the five free flicks that come along with it.[Thanks, Adam]

Red Octane VP excuses axe incompatibility, blames Rock Band issues
2007-12-09 07:25:00
Alright, try to stay with us here. Guitar Hero III's axe works just fine with Rock Band , but only the Xbox 360 hardware -- and Rock Band's guitar won't play the first note on any flavor of GHIII. Yeah, it's a bit confusing, but apparently the folks over at 1UP were downright tired of being dizzy, and phoned up Guitar Hero publisher Red Octane 's co-founder and VP of Business Development, Charles Huang, to chat about the totally confusing compatibility quandary. We fully understand the complexities in getting the instruments to work with other games, as well as the potential business impact, but Mr. Huang chose to take a different route in explaining why no Guitar Hero title would accept a Rock Band controller. He was quoted as saying that Red Octane wasn't "too interested in having [Harmonix] guitars work on its game, because [Harmonix is] having a lot of issues with its guitars." Of course, this logic begins to fall apart when you realize there was absolutely no compatibility ...
