AMD Phenom's X3
2008-04-23 20:36:00
When AMD first announced plans to introduce triple-core processors back in September of last year, reaction to the news was mixed. Some felt that AMD was simply planning to pass off partially functional Phenom X4 processors as triple-core products, making lemonade from lemons if you will. Others thought it was a good way for AMD to increase bottom line profits, getting more usable die from a single silicon wafer and mitigating yield loss. We were somewhat perplexed by the first reaction. This is an age-old strategy in the semiconductor space and after all, the graphics guys have been selling GPUs with non-functional units for years. AMD was simply borrowing a play from ATI's playbook. If you take a step back and think about it though, who really cares outside of the enthusiast niche'? Isn't it the ultimate quality of the end-product what's most important? If tri-core processors end up outperforming competing dual-core chips, and are less expensive than quad-cores, wouldn'...
4GB DDR3-1800 memory kit
2008-04-23 20:34:00
Who ever said you needed to compromise between memory density and speed? Defying convention somewhat, Super Talent has announced the release of a new dual-channel DDR3 memory kit that packs 4GB of RAM capable of operating at a blistering 1800MHz.The kit is part of the Project X lineup, and it's rated for operation with 8-8-8-24 timings at a voltage setting of 1.9V. Just like the cheap 4GB DDR2 kits we've seen around online stores lately, the W1800UX4GP is made up of 2GB modules. Unlike those cheap DDR2 offerings, though, Super Talent's new kit is launching at a very pricey $499.Super Talent also offers other Project X kits that have densities of 2GB to 4GB and are rated for speeds of 1600MHz to 2000MHz. According to the pictures and descriptions on the company's website, all Project X DIMMs are cooled with finned heat spreaders that extend above the module to increase surface area.

Western Digital's VelociRaptor VR150 hard drive
2008-04-21 14:59:00
If PC enthusiasts had a hall of fame for hardware, Western Digital's Raptor hard drive would be a shoo-in. Storage-related products are usually a little short on sex appeal, but the Raptor has become an icon?a testament to what it means to be an enthusiast.Like many enthusiast legends, the Raptor started with enterprise-class hardware designed for corporate server rooms. Western Digital, a plucky desktop drive maker with no background in SCSI hardware that dominated the enterprise scene at the time, came to bat with the world's first 10K-RPM Serial ATA hard drive. The original Raptor didn't usurp the enterprise crown from well-established SCSI players, but its performance blew away every other Serial ATA hard drive on the market. What's more, the Raptor plugged into standard desktop motherboards, delivering near-SCSI performance without the need for expensive expansion cards.Enthusiasts were so hungry for the performance delivered by the Raptor's 10K-RPM spindle speeds that we ...

N95 Now With Automatic Screen Rotation
2008-04-20 09:22:00
If you?re an N95 8GB user and often wondered why Nokia left out an auto screen rotate feature, worry no more. A new application has been created just for you. With the new firmware update (v20.0.016) users will find that just like in the Nokia N82, the N95?s screen can now rotate to landscape mode automatically when tilted. You won?t need to open the media keypad anymore to switch to landscape. All thanks to an accelerometer that drives the application, as in the N82.Other updates to the firmware include support for more Bluetooth headsets as well as some bug fixes for the browser and Wi-Fi.Unfortunately, what Nokia seems to have left out is Nokia Maps 2.0 and the new update for the N-Gage application. How odd. Nevertheless, the recent upgrade seems like it will only make the phone that much more appealing to users. To update your handset, click here or simply update the firmware from your Nokia PC Suite.

EVGA nForce 750i SLI FTW
2008-04-20 09:15:00
Face it, how many of you have been yearning and looking at the new nForce 780 and 790 mainboard ? Heck even 680i is still pretty sexy. There all just really expensive aren't they ? The one product that does offer the overclocking performance of the above mentioned mainboard however is less attractive as it was stripped of numerous features and comes in that fugly green color, you know it as the nForce 680 LT.eVGA however decided to make a new somewhat cheaper mainboard opposed to 780/790, designed it l33t, sexy yet offer two or maybe three features less than these sub 300 USD counterparts. They named their new baby the eVGA nForce 750 FTW. Where FTW literally means "For The Win". Now if you send a product with "FTW" in the actual name then as a company you need to have some pretty big balls, as any reviewer will test until they faint to see if that product lives up-to the reputation. You know what, they need balls as big as an NVIDIA colored bull. But man granted .. eVGA surely knew...
Intel's Core 2 Quad Q9300 processor
2008-04-20 09:11:00
We first reviewed a 45nm Intel processor back in September, and since then, the CPU maker has been ramping up production and slowly transitioning to 45nm chips across its product lines. Two of the final steps along Intel's path to 45nm ubiquity are of great interest to PC enthusiasts: budget dual- and quad-core processors. We like budget processors for obvious reasons?they're cheap, like us?and not-so-obvious ones?they tend to have the most overclocking headroom. We especially like the idea of budget 45nm Core 2 processors for yet another reason: they promise to combine a potent punch with modest power draw.We have two of these chips on the bench today, and they're just now becoming widely available. The Core 2 Quad Q9300 is Intel's most affordable quad-core processor, and it promises to supplant a long-time favorite of ours, the Core 2 Quad Q6600, by offering additional goodness at the exact same price. The Core 2 Duo E7200, meanwhile, is Intel's cheapest 45nm dual-core CPU an...

Sennheiser vs Bose
2008-04-18 05:46:00
Why do we compare two products every now and then? Mostly due to the fact that boredom hits us pretty often, and sometimes for reasons of pure debate. Today it turned out that Siddharth (who suffers from what we call "4 o'clock syndrome", when effervescence takes over his otherwise quiet self) wanted to pit his blah against my Bose QC3. Also, if you are an audiophile with some extra dough to spend, here's a reason why you should pick a winner.Design and ComfortFirst of all, more for our pleasure than yours, we will compare the two aesthetically. Sennheiser has always been one to ensure good-looking products, and we are not in the least bit surprised to see the PXC 350 win hands down. You may think otherwise, but right now it?s what we say that matters. But we don?t mind elaborating a bit.Sennheiser has adhered to ?black is elegant? theme throughout, with a hard plastic outer covering for the drivers and headphone, though soft black cushions line the inner surface of the band and a...
Xbox 360 Sales Double in Europe
2008-04-18 05:44:00
Microsoft reports that sales of their Xbox 360 console have "more than doubled" in Europe since the price cut that happened about one month ago, solidifyingits leadership position as the number one console. Since the data comes straight from Microsoft and we know that giant companies have a tendency to misinterpret sales results every now and then, we would get this piece of information with a grain of salt, even though we're not claiming that double Xbox 360 sales couldn't have happened ? especially because the GTA IV impending release might get a few more Xbox buyers with its announced and exclusive DLC."Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today?s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe," said Chris Lewis, Vice President, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Europe. "The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that?s appealing to everyone in the home, makes X...

Red-Ray Players Give You the Mind-Blowing HD Experience
2008-04-18 05:40:00
The format war might be over for Toshiba's HD-DVD, but it seems that the next target on the list of casualties will be the victorious Blu-Ray. Those of you who are already prepared to toss the Blu-Ray movie titles and jump in the newformat's bandwagon, are advised to wait a little more, as the new format is still in diapers. The mighty Red-Ray format is a new standard, able to deliver "Beyond-HD" video quality, namely movies at impressive 4096 x 2048 pixels screen resolutions.Blu-ray players are also marketed as "Beyond-HD" devices, but this labeling is at least misleading, since high-definition specifications say that the HD standard is achieved at 720p (1280 x 720), 1080i (1920 x 1080i), and 1080p (1920 x 1080p) resolutions. The Blu-Ray standard is only able to deliver 1080p, which is in the HD range. The "Beyond-HD" image quality is achieved by increasing the essential specifications of the standard, namely the rendering resolutions. The only format able to support "Beyond-HD" de...

Sony Ericsson W910i Illegally in Love with Apple
2008-04-17 07:33:00
Sony Ericsson and Apple don't really have much in common, except the fact that both companies produce and sell mobile devices, among other things. Well, someingenious owner of a Sony Ericsson W910i apparently found a way to make his SE handset and Apple look like long-time lovers. The owner we talk about seems to have a unique Sony Ericsson W910i: with Apple's apple (couldn't have said it otherwise) as a wallpaper, but not any kind of wallpaper. It's an animated one that spins the (A)apple as you spin and move the phone, in such way that the apple is always kept with its bottom down, no matter how you orientate the W910. It's like the fruit (may I call it this way, although it's just a logo?) has more weight in its lower part and the implacable law of gravity keeps it in a vertical position all the time. While you might think this is not news-worthy (of course, it's not actually news, at least not in the "X launched Y with the Z feature" way), I'm sure it's interesting for th...

Hitachi Unveils Enterprise-Class 450 GB Drive
2008-04-16 20:05:00
Hitachi has just announced its Ultrastar 15K450 hard-disk drive that packs 450 GB of storage space using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. It's true that such capacities are no longer new, since othercompanies ship 1 TB disk drives, but Hitachi's 450 GB offering spins at 15,000 rotations per minute and is the largest drive on the enterprise-class market. The Ultrastar 15K450 is especially tailored to perform in mission-critical server and storage applications, including intensive database environments and online transaction processing. The drive is built on state-of-the-art mechanical technologies, such as fluid dynamic bearing motors, in order to keep the noise levels at a minimum, as well as Hitachi's patented head load/unload ramp that protects the data integrity. The built-in Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) technology tries to predict the disturbances that usually occur while mounted into a multi-drive setup and automatically corrects the errors produced b...

But there is a single explanation: the login form present on different websites sends the login data to the same database in order to validate the authentication process. If you will create a free PHP hosting account on the website www.000webhost.com, you will get the web hosting account details needed to login to a VistaPanel control panel to manage your domains and websites. There are many interesting benefits like the possibility of add-on domains usage, domain parking, unlimited number of email addresses, Fantastico automatic scripts installer and more. The features offered by this free hosting service are comparable with a paid one.By performing various search engine queries for "VistaPanel" keyword you will find more free web hosting services with almost same features but a different description (for example: byethost.com o...

All Indians get ready for iphone......
2008-04-16 19:56:00
Indian Apple fans can breathe a sigh of relief as a date seems to be near for the iPhone's Indian launch. Come September, Vodafone just might be bringing the legendary handset to the country and no longer will we have to ponder over the big question ? WHEN?It seems European sales are dropping and China Mobile has already said 'no' to being a carrier. The 8GB version of the Vodafone iPhone is expected to arrive in the first week of September, and the price is estimated to be in the range of Rs 28,000 to Rs 30,000.Although jailbroken iPhones are already available in the country, this is our chance to get a guaranteed genuine iPhone with no need for any messing around, at least to make it workable with a provider. The only difference is it?s available in the gray market for a whole lot cheaper. Stay tuned.

MSI rolls out seven AMD 780-series motherboards
2008-04-16 19:53:00
AMD's quad-core Opterons are finally starting to show up in servers from big players like Dell and HP, and MSI apparently thinks that's a good enough cue to unveil a host of new motherboards based on AMD's latest integrated graphics chipsets, the 780 series. The seven new MSI motherboards include K9A2GM-FIH, K9A2GM-FIH-S, and K9A2VM-FIH offerings, which all feature HDMI video output and two FireWire ports. The "GM" models are based on the AMD 780G chipset and include Radeon HD 3200 graphics (the FIH-S also has solid-state capacitors), while the "VM" mobo has a 780V chipset and Radeon HD 3100 graphics.Moving further down MSI lineup, the K9A2GM-FD and K9A2VM-FD models mirror the aforementioned K9A2GM-FIH and K9A2VM-FIH, but with DVI display outputs instead of HDMI. Last, but not least, MSI offers 780G-based K9A2GM-F V2 and 780V-based K9A2GM-F V2 motherboards that only have VGA output and lack FireWire ports. All seven offerings feature micro-ATX form factors and support for quad-cor...

Overclocking Intel's Xeon X3320 processor
2008-04-16 19:47:00
We PC enthusiasts have been co-opting enterprise-class hardware for our own personal systems for years now. We got our first taste of the creamy smoothness of SMP on dual-socket workstation boards long before you could get two cores conveniently packaged on the same chip. Tempted by lightning-fast access times and 10K-RPM spindle speeds, we adopted Western Digital's Raptor hard drive. And who can forget AMD's Toledo-based dual-core Opterons?overclocking marvels compatible with the same 939-pin socket as Athlon 64 X2 desktop chips. I've had what was a relatively inexpensive Opteron 165 designed to run at 1.8GHz happily chugging away at 2.4GHz on a standard desktop motherboard for a couple of years now.Although they share the same architecture and performance characteristics as their desktop counterparts, server and workstation processors like the Opteron typically undergo additional validation testing and run at lower operating voltages. In a sense, chips that make the grade for t...

Sony BDU-X10S Blu-ray Reader
2008-04-15 08:27:00
With the official announcement of the demise of HD-DVD format earlier this year, and with most Hollywood studios embracing the Blu-ray format, the format war has paved the way for the reign of Blu-ray. Consumers now have a clearer view about which way to go -- there is only one! This is similar to the Sony Betamax vs. VHS war in the '70s. Sony learnt a lesson then, and this time round have emerged jubilant with a winner format -- Blu-ray, which will be the standard for HD content in the coming years.Quick to capitalize on this victory, Sony have launched a bevy of Blu-ray products, media players and recorders. Users fight to save windows XP........
2008-04-15 07:47:00
Microsoft Corp.'s operating systems run most personal computers around the globe and are a cash cow for the world's largest software maker. But you'd never confuse a Windows user with the passionate fans of Mac OS X or even the free Linux operating system. Unless it's someone running Windows XP, a version Microsoft wants to retire. Fans of the six-year-old operating system set to be pulled off store shelves in June have papered the Internet with blog posts, cartoons and petitions recently. They trumpet its superiority to Windows Vista, Microsoft's latest PC operating system, whose consumer launch last January was greeted with lukewarm reviews. No matter how hard Microsoft works to persuade people to embrace Vista, some just can't be wowed. They complain about Vista's hefty hardware requirements, its less-than-peppy performance, occasional incompatibility with other programs and devices and frequent, irritating security pop-up windows. For them, the impending disappearance of XP...

Asus' Eee PC 4G XP sub-notebook
2008-04-15 07:43:00
Asus created a whole new class of budget sub-notebooks when it launched the Eee PC late last year. Since its launch, the Eee has been so popular that the likes of MSI, Gigabyte, HP, and even Dell are scrambling to come up with their own take on the formula. The formula, of course, combines relatively low-end hardware that's fast enough for basic tasks with an ultra-portable sub-notebook form factor that's much smaller than other budget notebooks. These systems come pre-loaded with Linux and free software to keep costs down, allowing Asus to sell the standard Eee PC 4G for only $400.The marriage of true PC functionality with sub-notebook portability at an affordable price makes the Eee PC ideal for a wide range of applications and users. Many folks who have never even heard of alternative operating systems may be turned off by the Eee's unfamiliar Linux OS, though. The device's Xandros distribution is by no means difficult to use, and the bundled applications offer all the right ...
