Creating Good Passwords
2007-11-14 12:26:00
Great ideas about password safety. Read the entire story and learn a lesson. clipped from news.bbc.co.ukBy their very nature passwords are problematic. Easy to remember often means easy to guess and hard to guess often means hard to remember.A good password will mix letters, numbers and punctuation, but the strongest contain non-alphanumeric characters or symbols.A good suggestion is to use a phrase you can easily remember, says Mr Munro. Use something like "I went to the pub last night" and take the first letters of each word. You can mix upper and lower case and throw in random symbols, like a dollar sign."Have one password for high security things that really matter, like online banking, and a low security one to use on things that don't really matter," says Barry Fox, contributing editor for Europe Consumer Electronics Daily."It's a common misconception," says Mr Munro. "It's better to have one good password than lots of bad ones."The other essential when it comes to protec...

THE BOTTLE OF WINE
2007-11-11 22:46:00
You gotta admit, that was funny. clipped from www.thethinkingblue.comFor all of us who are married, were married, wish you were married, or wish you weren't married, this is something to smile about the next time you see a bottle of wine: Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road . As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride. vspace=6 border=0>With a silent nod of thanks, the woman got into the car. Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at EVERYTHING she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally. "What in bag?" asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, "It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband." The Navajo woman was silent for another m...

The new etiquette? I don't believe that the practice is new at all. Haven't we all seen others do it, or have been guilty of doing it ourselves? :Sneezing and coughing into your sleeve helps prevent airborne transmission of viruses and bacteria, but there is a certain yuck! factor in having saliva-and-snot-caked sleeves. The good doctor should have mentioned the obvious need to handle infected clothing carefully and wash it thoroughly...and promptly! clipped from www.newsdaily.comAiling individuals who do not want to spread their infections should sneeze into their sleeves rather than their hands, a British virus expert recommendsProfessor John Oxford of London's Queen Mary medical school has claimed that by sneezing into one's sleeve or crook of the elbow, a person who is sick can significantly limit the spread of their infection, The Telegraph said Saturday"The new etiquette should be to cough and sneeze into your elbow,""It breaks the chain of transmission, and you must was...

YouTube Highschool Killings Video
2007-11-07 17:43:00
Just another example of people needing to pay more attention to what is going on in the Webs. clipped from www.metro.co.ukA gunman is in hospital after killing at least seven pupils in their classrooms and a headmistress just hours after a video was posted on You Tube predicting a school massacre.Five boys, two girls and the school's headmistress are reported to have been killed. As news of the shooting spread, a video was discovered on the YouTube website, set to hard-driving music, showing a still photo of a school that appeared to be Jokela High School. The YouTube video is entitled "Jokela High School Massacre - 11/7/2007" and was posted by a user called Sturmgeist89. "Sturmgeist" means storm spirit in German.Despite having the third-largest per capita ratio of handgun ownership in the world, violent incidents are rare at Finnish schools.

Romney Hits the Bible Belt
2007-11-06 08:33:00
Poor Romney is in for a lot of abuse, you gotta love his spunk. clipped from www.bloomberg.comAs Mitt Romney scours the South forendorsements from evangelical leaders, he is getting someunusual advice on how to explain his Mormon faith: Don't try tobe one of us. ``I told him, you cannot equate Mormonism withChristianity; you cannot say, `I am a Christian just likeyou,''' said Representative Bob Inglis of South Carolina, whichis scheduled to hold the first primary among the Southernstates. ``If he does that, every Baptist preacher in the Southis going to have to go to the pulpit on Sunday and explain thedifferences.'' Evangelical leaders say Romney, unlike Kennedy, won't beable to defuse the religion question by citing the FirstAmendment of the Constitution and advocating a rigid separationof church and state. Many Christian conservatives blame such aseparation for a variety of social ills. When he goes around and says Jesus Christ ismy Lord and savior, he ticks of...

I was listening to the radio this morning, and this is what caught my ear.clipped from edition.cnn.comChurch ordered to pay $10.9 million for funeral protestAlbert Snyder of York, Pennsylvania, sued the Westboro Baptist Church for unspecified damages after members demonstrated at the March 2006 funeral of his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, who was killed in Iraq. The jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages. It returned later in the afternoon with its decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress.U.S. District Judge Richard Bennett noted the size of the award for compensating damages "far exceeds the net worth of the defendants," according to financial statements filed with the court.Church members routinely picket funerals of military personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, carrying signs such as "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags."I know this will prolly amount to nothing, they...

Bye-Bye Whois?
2007-10-30 18:40:00
clipped from news.wired.comLike a "411" for the Internet, Whois contains information such as names and phone numbers on the owners of millions of ".com" and other Internet addresses.some privacy advocates are proposing scrapping the system entirely because they can't agree with the people who use the system on how to give domain name owners more options when they register - such as designating third-party agents. Privacy advocates say individuals shouldn't have to reveal personal information simply to have a Web site. The so-called "sunset" proposal is expected to come up Wednesday before a committee of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, a key Internet oversight agency.Approval of the sunset proposal, as drafted, would mean abolishing the current Whois requirements by late 2008. After that, individual registration companies would be able to decide whether to continue offering data on their customers, leading to gaps in the registration records. ...

A Pastor Doesn't Like Halloween
2007-10-29 03:15:00
My dear Pastor , all you gotta do is ignore the holiday or make into what you want it. It's not an evil thing. It is only as evil as you make it.Why can't people get a grip? clipped from www.sltrib.comOn Halloween , children around the country will adorn themselves in costumes and go door-to-door soliciting treats. The combination of make-believe and delightful goodies makes the holiday irresistible for children, but some parents are less enthusiastic.    Some fear the holiday may be spiritually harmful. Some religious groups celebrate "Holyween" instead. It is virtually impossible to shelter children from a holiday that is so prevalent in our culture. A more practical solution may be to find alternatives that do not compromise the children's spirituality, safety or fun.

New Time Dimesnsion Proposed
2007-10-16 23:31:00
See if you can wrap your noodle around this one.....clipped from www.telegraph.co.ukTime is no longer a simple line from the past to the future, in a four dimensional world consisting of three dimensions of space and one of time. Instead, the physicist envisages the passage of history as curves embedded in a six dimensions, with four of space and two of time.According to Bars, the familiar four dimensional world we see around us is merely a "shadow" of the six-dimensional reality, just as a hand makes many different shadows on a wall when lit from different angles.Although we cannot experience the extra time dimension directly, we can effectively notice it through the different perspectives of the different "shadows".The work poses a question: is his proposal a mathematical fix, rather than a real physical entity?Changing our picture of time from a line to a plane (one to two dimensions) means that the path between the past and future could loop back on itself, allowing you to trave...

How I Find Blogging Ideas
2007-10-16 22:47:00
There are a number of ways I find blogging ideas, but here is my top fiveClipmarks This is a social bookmarking and quoting service. People browse the Internet and highlight portions of a website they like and "clip" it, comment on the site if they want to, and post it to the community. You can then find their posts by topic or start "following" what they post by adding them to your "watch list". It's a rather interesting way of looking around the net for new ideas and stuff you, yourself, may not have thought of looking for. They have a cool surprise me feature that always seems to turn up new topics, it's like randomly browsing the net.Clipmarks - Connecting people with information.Glenn Beck The Glenn Beck program, found in two formats, one on radio and another on CNN Headline News, is always full of topics that I either agree or disagree about. Sometimes I feel it's important enough to comment on, so I will post a quick blog about a given topic. His "fusion of entertainment a...

Congressional Turkey
2007-10-16 01:42:00
What is up with all this about something that happened almost 100 years ago? Congress is debating over labeling the actions of the Ottoman Turk s in World War I against the Armenian people as a genocide. It's a little old if you ask me. If Congress does pass this, we will see Turkey close it's airspace and borders to our troops. We will lose an important ally in the midst of the Gulf Region. Of course we are just following our friends in Europe on this.Google News Results – Read for yourself.

Meet The Inklings
2007-10-15 22:58:00
I don't agree with all the ravings of the original author of this article, but it does present a good starting point for those interested in finding out who the Inklings were.I originally posted a link to this article back in November 2004 but didn't have much to say about it at the time.clipped from www.sightlerpublications.comThe Inklings were a literary discussion group comprised of C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Dorothy Sayers. The Inklings believed, like Plato, thegnostics, Westcott, and Gladstone, that myth could teach spiritual truth and that pre-Christian myths foreshadowedand pointed to Christianity. Theybelieved that myth could not keep itself from showing spiritual reality. And so we see that there are important historical and philosophical parallels between Westcott and Macdonald and Tolkien and Lewis. Westcott, F. D. Maurice, Macdonald, Emerson, and Thoreau are among the “academic” 19th century forerunners of the new age moveme...

Long-haired boy wins religious lawsuit
2007-10-12 23:00:00
Great to see things work out this way. clipped from www.clickondetroit.comThe American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan won a religious liberty lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of a ninth-grader who refused to obey a school’s dress code that required boys to maintain “closely cropped” hairstyles.Benson, 14, was enrolled in Old Redford Academy for three days when he was suspended on grounds that he was not in compliance with the hair provisions of the school’s dress code.Benson’s mother said she strictly abides by various Old Testament provisions, including a passage in the book of Leviticus that forbids the cutting of hair: “Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of your beard,” Leviticus 19:27.Claudius has not cut his hair since he was 4 years old."Punishing Claudius for practicing his religion is both unnecessary and illegal," said Kary L. Moss, Executive Director of the ACLU of Michigan. "Students should never have to choose b...
