2008-05-03 15:07:00 Wireless LAN Topologies A computer network is a system that provides communications between computers. computer networks can be configured as peer to peer, as client/server, or as centralized Central Processing Units (CPUs) with distributed dumb terminals. A networking topology is defined simply as the physical and/or logical layout of nodes in a computer network. Any individual who has taken a networking basics class is already familiar with bus, ring, star, mesh, and hybrid topologies that are often used in wired networks. All topologies have advantages and disadvantages. A topology may cover very small areas or can exist as a worldwide architecture. Wireless topologies also exist as defined by the physical and logical layout of wireless hardware. Many wireless technologies exist and can be arranged into four major wireless networking topologies. The 802.11 standard defines one specific type of wireless communications. Within the 802.11 standard exists three types of top... More About: Wireless , Computer

BT rolls out 'faster broadband'...
2008-05-01 14:08:00 BT rolls out 'faster broadband' ADSL2+ offers potentially faster broadband speeds Faster broadband speeds could soon be on offer to a limited number of people in the UK as BT starts offering access to its 21st Century Network. BT Wholesale will be offering its ADSL2+ technology to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from this week. But only a million households will be able to get access to the service, which offers speeds of up to 24Mbps. Jupiter analyst Ian Fogg said the roll-out was "tardy" and available to "a tiny fraction" of UK households. Writing on his blog, he said: "If this is BT's 21st century network then those fibre to the home networks are for the 22nd century." Some ISPs in the UK, such as Sky, O2 and Be, have already begun to offer ADSL2+ in the UK by deploying their own technology in exchanges. ... More About: Broadband
Business Prospects Of Wimax -- An ISP...
2008-04-30 12:40:00 Business Prospects Of Wimax -- An ISP point of View The prospects for WiMAX technology as a viable business opportunity are often the subject of debate amidst numerous actual or perceived challenges. Applying these innovative insights Streamyx make these arguments Streamyx challenges disappear. Unlike most people's expectation of rural deployments, you might consider targeting SME's Streamyx urban areas. There are Streamyx reasons for this: There is a growing demand in business for bandwidth Streamyx of carrying symmetrical traffic, for voice, applications and uploading of larger files. There is a small but growing need for separated last mile services. Currently, however many wired service providers you have, they all use the incumbents' last mile infrastructure based on its nearest telephone exchange location unless you have paid for an expensive dig from the next nearest exchange. Applications for Wireless Mesh Networks...
2008-04-28 14:13:00 Applications for Wireless Mesh Networks - technolgix.blog.co.in Cities and Municipalities With wireless mesh networks, cities can connect citizens and public services over a widespread high-speed wireless connection. A growing number of downtown areas are installing public WiFi hotspots. Mesh networks allow cities to inexpensively and simply link all those hotspots together to cover the entire municipality. Some advantages of municipal mesh networks: Commuters can check their e-mail on the train, in the park, at a restaurant. Public works officials can monitor the diagnostics of the city’s power and water supply by installing wireless nodes in water treatment facilities, sewers and generators. There’s no need to dig trenches to run cables. Public safety and emergency workers can access secure virtual networks within the larger network to keep communication lines open, even when ... What's the next big thing for the...
2008-04-27 15:06:00 What's the next big thing for the wireless industry? By Mike Antonucci Mercury News If it's wireless, it's trendy. There's grand talk throughout the tech world about a wave of new networks and wireless innovation that will provide better Internet access, deliver streaming video and foster an array of consumer-friendly features. Although it's too early to be sure which companies or networks will be most successful, the optimists dominate the skeptics. Moreover, the federal government's recent auction of desirable radio spectrum - significant portions of which were won by AT&T and Verizon Wireless - is considered a major catalyst for improved mobile services. As constantly proclaimed by industry experts at "The Mobile Future" conference in Santa Clara last week, the wireless industry is supposed to revolutionize our lives. So, just how will that happen? • Consider the prospect of two-way video on handheld devices. For instance, parents may be able to use cel... More About: Thing

The 802.11 Wireless Mesh Network Dream...
2008-04-23 22:35:00 The 802.11 Wireless Mesh Network Dream is Very Much Alive Probably the biggest problem with Wi-Fi today is that it has a bad name when it comes to reliability and manageability. We're all too familiar with the experience of finding a Wi-Fi access point only to discover that for some inexplicable reason we can't access it at all or if we do the quality of the connection mysteriously drops in mid-session. This is less of a problem using higher end Wi-Fi products from companies such as Cisco, Aruba, Motorola and others but then you not only incur a higher level of expense, you also pretty much have to dedicate people to setting them up correctly and then managing them. Given these issues the announcement of a new SmartMesh technology from Ruckus Wireless is pretty intriguing because it promises to lower the cost of not only deploying wireless technology but also reduce the set-up time by half. Furthermore, the company claims that performance will...

2008-04-18 18:35:00 Politicos want free wireless broadband on unused airwaves Posted by Anne Broache A Silicon Valley Democrat in the U.S. Congress is proposing a new auction of unused radio spectrum, but with some ambitious strings attached: The winner would have to offer a free, wireless broadband network that reaches 95 percent of the American population within a decade. Voicing disappointment that familiar large wireless carriers scooped up the most significant share of airwaves in a recently concluded auction, Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) on Thursday introduced the Wireless Internet Nationwide for Families Act, which would direct the Federal Communications Commission to auction off a band of wireless spectrum between 2,155 megahertz and 2,180MHz that currently lies fallow and impose detailed rules on the winning bidder. Rep. Ed Markey, the Massachusetts Democrat who leads a House telecommunications and Internet panel, and Rep. Chris Cannon, a Utah Republican, have signed on as co-sponsors. Unde... More About: Free
The Battle for Control of 4G Business
...
2008-04-18 18:28:00 The Battle for Control of 4G Business by Robert Syputa and Adlane Fellah http://www.fiercebroadbandwireless.com/ Headlines often pit WiMAX and 3G-LTE against each other, yet the stories often describe only the differences in technology and commercial development while glossing over the fundamental changes that are taking place. Specifically, WiMAX represents a new and different approach to technology development and go-to-market strategy. In this regard, WiMAX and 3G-LTE could not be more different. Two Visions Formed by Incumbency The public perception of wireless has been heavily influenced by the industry's greatest success: mobile phones and Wi-Fi broadband. This has led to the perception of WiMAX as 'Wi-Fi on Steroids' or as a challenger to small cell phone mobility. WiMAX, like any other new technology, must distance itself from what has come before. To cross the chasm, it is necessary to look ahead-not behind. WiMAX ...

AT&T WiFi portal for iPhone users...
2008-04-18 18:20:00 AT&T WiFi portal for iPhone users shows up at Starbucks It was only a couple months ago that Starbucks announced that AT&T would take over hotspot services from T-Mobile. Now the WiFi hotspots are rolling out to some of the Starbucks stores. David Chartier, of previous TUAW and now ArsTechnica fame, recently posted an article on his personal blog about the portal and what it offers. He also took the picture that you can see above. According to David, AT&T is giving WiFi users 2 free hours of access per day. But AT&T didn't stop there -- they designed an iPhone-specific portal to sign onto the service. A local Starbucks manager told David that all 7,000+ Starbucks stores in the US should be "finished by summer." I should note that this iPhone portal isn't specific to Starbucks -- every AT&T WiFi hotspot features the same interface -- and all devices are eligible for the 2 free hours of access (not just iPhones and iPod touches).
