Wireless – beyond the myths Gary...
2008-04-16 14:59:00
Wireless – beyond the myths Gary Williams separates the myths and facts associated with wireless plant communications. Wireless technology makes it possible to incorporate new strategic measurements and other data to solutions that simply were either not practical or even possible to implement in a wired communications environment. When wireless technology is used, solutions for process optimisation, device management, real-time equipment condition monitoring, energy management, personnel tracking, asset tracking, security, and enterprise asset management can all work in unison to address both industrial asset utilisation and availability. There are some limitations to a wired infrastructure, especially in the plant environment. New applications often require upgraded cabling and expansion to existing applications may require additional cabling. Along with the cabling itself, there are many associated costs with this kind of infrastructure. In order to expand cabling within a...

2008-04-13 13:16:00
Wireless Opens Tactical Horizons Drawn by the potential of wireless technologies, military specialists are experimenting with a wide range of methods for deploying massive amounts of data in fast-moving tactical situations. The many projects underway include mobile WiMax, mobile ad hoc wireless networking and local area networks over terrestrial microwave radio links. The Army, for example, recently conducted a trial of WiMax, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, which provides wireless data over long distances while augmenting the capabilities of previous wireless communications on the 802.x standard established by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). (See MIT, January/February 2008, page 16.) Following are three recent examples of other initiatives, which use different technologies but share the common goal of increasing command and control communications capabilities on the modern battlefield. Bringing security home New wireless systems are revolutionizing home monitoring and security, according to Ravi Sharma and Pilgrim Beart. www.cieonline.co.uk New wireless technologies that leverage mobile phones and the internet are radically changing both home monitoring and security. While conventional wired security systems have not advanced technologically in decades, new low-cost wireless sensor networking is making it easier for people to keep a close eye on their homes and monitor the safety of family members from anywhere in the world. The catalyst for this technological leap are new standards-based low-power wireless technologies that offer not only more functionality than traditional systems, but are also much easier and inexpensive to install. Combining ZigBee technology, the internet and mobile phone networks, this new generation of intelligent home security systems can be installed by even the least ‘techno-savvy’ homeowner. The sophisticated wireles...

Vodafone CEO Wants Wireless Industry To Standardize On LTE The industry could innovate and deliver better services faster if everyone used one 4G standard, or at least settled on technologies that work well together, said industry leaders at CTIA. Arun Sarin, chief executive of telecom heavyweight Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) Group, called on the wireless industry Wednesday to adopt fourth-generation LTE technology as the high-speed standard of the future. During his keynote speech at the CTIA Wireless conference in Las Vegas, Sarin said the wireless industry would be able to move faster in delivering an Internet experience similar to what exists on a PC today, if it rallied around one broadband standard. Sarin listed the mobile Internet, the evolutionary shift of voice and data services to IP networks, as the industry's economic future. "We need to look at LTE as an all-encompassing standard," Sarin said. Sarin's comments are controversial because others in the industry belie...

They also talked about moving toward more "open" networks, offering consumers the ability to use a greater number of devices and more applications over their handsets. The companies disclosed plans for their purchase of 700-megahertz radio frequencies after rules restricting them from discussing the Federal Communications Commission's auction were lifted Thursday night. Carriers currently control the types of phones and services their wireless subscribers can use. Even though the companies touted their new networks as open, some said they won't offer the extent of consumer choice that some public-interest groups and Internet companies sought. Intel develops platform to boost Wi-Fi...

Intel develops platform to boost Wi-Fi antenna's range to 60 miles NEW DELHI: Wireless mobile internet access is a great tool to have. You can sit by the beach, by the pool side or an airport lounge and surf the net, without any dangling wires. You just have to ensure that the laptop can sniff a Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) hot spot and get going on the world wide web. The range is about 150 feet and if you want a longer range, say around 30 miles, WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is the way to go. So said the geeks. But there’s a bit of twist in the tale, thanks partly to new research and partly to actual technology roll out. WiMax is a great way to cover cities and sparsely populated areas, but actual coverage is far less than promised: one to 1.5 km in very densely populated areas to about 10-12 km in others. On the other hand, Intel researchers have developed a new platform that boosts Wi-Fi antenna’s limited range to 60 miles! So,...

2008-04-02 09:53:00
Wi-Fi Alliance focuses on driving WiFi-enabled handsets One of the key initiatives for the Wi-Fi Alliance this year is pushing WiFi-enabled handsets. Thanks to the iPhone, which incorporates both WiFi and EDGE, consumers are becoming more educated about the marriage of WiFi and cellular and the type of experience they can have over WiFi, noted Kelly Davis-Felner, senior marketing manager with the alliance. Davis-Felner cited a recent white paper written by Tonse Telecom and sponsored by the Wi-Fi Alliance that indicates much of the growth of the WiFi market in India is likely to come from handsets since subscribers there are accustomed to using sophisticated data services on their handsets more so than laptops. Some of the initiatives the Wi-Fi Alliance to push along the adoption of WiFi in cellular devices include instituting a program that will test voice performance over WiFi. That program will be implemented within the next quarter. The alliance has also begun benchmarking...

WiFi coming to telcos' rescue - MOBILE...

WiFi coming to telcos' rescue - MOBILE phones are handy little gadgets that have changed the way the world communicates, enabling us to talk to each other, or send text messages, from pretty well anywhere. But, lord, how the cost mounts. Australia's mobile phone companies are among the most expensive in the world, as many of us know only too well. And the so-called monthly "caps" are a national joke. You can sign up for a $49 or $79 cap, and still cop bills that are many hundreds of dollars more, as Doubleclick knows only too well. But what if you could use your mobile to make free or very cheap interstate or international calls using voice over internet protocol technology? Those monthly bills would drop dramatically. That's the thought behind talkwifi: technology that Sydney-based VoIP company Freshtel aims to introduce to Australia later this year. It's planning an earlier launch, from April, in Britain. The idea is that your mobile will automatically connect to a ...

Wireless enterprises, changing business...
2008-03-30 20:00:00
Wireless enterprises, changing business dynamics and integration of communication with backend applications are all an assured part of the future for Philip Edholm, CTO and VP of network architecture, enterprise at Nortel, as NME finds out. Can you describe the law that you have postulated? Are we on track to meet its goals? Back in 2002 we deduced that devices would eventually be connected to three networks. The idea is you have a sea of 1x bandwidth. You occasionally go to islands which are hotspots or hotel rooms and that is ten times as much bandwidth and then occasionally you go to a dock, which is your office and this is a 100x more bandwidth. So what actually started this was a thought process on a very different area, which was if you got a bunch of things sending you information - like e-mail, video files, IM - what you really wanted was a system which could manage when you wanted them delivered - bigger and less important files when you are in a high bandwid...

NY Muni Wireless Network Launch in Sight New York City's most extensive municipal wireless network is a month away from launch. When it goes live, it will initially connect 70 percent of police and fire operations to new public safety and public service applications via vehicle modems and handheld units. The launch date comes four years since the city awarded Northrop Grumman a five-year $500 million contract to build the New York City Wireless Network (NYCWiN). Officials expect the network to improve public safety by linking first responders with incident managers at remote sites using real-time data and video fees. The network will provide access to federal and state anti-crime and anti-terrorism databases, as well fingerprint files, city maps, mug shorts and streaming video feeds. Currently 53 applications for 19 agencies are in trial deployments. In addition to safety and law enforcement, piloted applications are in use by health and human services division, transportation ...
