802.11 family is getting quite big - http://3g4g.blogspot.com/ Having only studied 802.11a, b and g in past, I was surprised to find that there are many other 802.11 protocols in the family. See which ones do you know: 802.11a - 54 Mbps standard, 5 GHz signaling (ratified 1999) 802.11b - 11 Mbps standard, 2.4 GHz signaling (1999) 802.11c - operation of bridge connections (moved to 802.1) 802.11d - worldwide compliance with regulations for use of wireless signalspectrum (2001) 802.11e - Quality of Service (QoS) support (2005) 802.11f – Inter access point protocol to support roaming clients (2003) 802.11g - 54 Mbps standard, 2.4 GHz signaling (2003) 802.11h - Enhanced version of 802.11a to support European regulatory requirements (2003) 802.11i - Security improvements for the 802.11 family (2004) 802.11j - Enhancements to 5 GHz signaling to support Japan regulatoryrequirements (2004) 802.11k - WLAN system management ...

Sebastopol voids Wi-Fi contract ...

Sebastopol voids Wi-Fi contract http://corp.sonic.net/blog/ Our low power mesh Wi-Fi project has been slowly growing in coverage, and we are now serving between 250 and 300 users per day with free broadband access. Service is available in parts of Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Airport Express buses to SFO, plus scattered locations around the bay area. But in Sebastopol, concerned citizens have been lobbying the city council to revoke our contract, and this week, the council reversed themselves, voiding the contract that we signed in November. Here’s an articlenews at BroadBandReports. on the topic from Sebastopol resident Dale Dougherty. The concern the folks who are opposed have is that Wi-Fi will harm them. Despite many independent university and government health studies of even higher power equipment (cellular base station towers, etc) which show no harmful effect. For more on this topic, see Wikipedia. There is also a great overview at the World ...

WiMax Gets Less-Than-Max Grades in...
2008-03-25 13:30:00
WiMax Gets Less-Than-Max Grades in Australia The WiMax technology has been put forward as a way to shake up not one, but two oligopolies. It is a method of wirelessly transmitting data over long distances. It can be used in place of home broadband service from the phone or cable company. And it may also provide an alternative to cellphone networks for on-the-go Internet access. Intel has been a main backer. Here’s one little problem with it. According to Buzz Broadband, a small Australian company that was an early WiMax adopter, it doesn’t work very well. This report by CommsDay, an Australian telecom publication, on a speech at a WiMax conference in Bangkok, quotes Garth Freeman, the company’s chief executive, as saying that WiMax has been a “disaster” that “failed miserably.” The technology, which has been promoted as covering distances as far as 50 kilometers (31 miles), only reached 2 kilometers, he said. It had trouble i...

EchoStar to control near-nationwide 700Mhz WiMax network in the USA - http://archosfans.com/ Echostar owns around 20% of Archos stock, and they have just succeeded in buying a nearly national coverage of licences to deploy wireless broadband in the USA on the 700MHZ spectrum. Not only does that mean that Echostar can now deploy their own wireless broadband network to distribute video-on-demand directly to their set-top-boxes without being dependent on the established internet service providers, it also means Echostar can ask Archos to build for them a portable video player that will stream video directly over their 700Mhz WiMax networks. They could also use their spectrum to build WiFi and WiMax mesh networks, thus blanketing the whole USA relativelty cheaply and rapidly with their own wireless broadband network. So customers who agree to install a little box outdoors next to their Dish Networks satellite dish, could then hookup to the central WiMax broadcaster and republish that si...

WiMax to make initial flight at the airport - http://www.eetimes.com/ WiMAX's first commercial rollout could be at airports, updating manifests, flight plans and onboard entertainment each time a plane lands. Called GateSync, the WiMAX-based technology hardware will be manufactured by Thales Avionics, Inc. (Cedex, France, formerly Thomson CSF), and use wireless software from Proximetry, Inc. (San Diego, Calif.), and a beam-steerable phased-array antenna from Pinyon Technologies, Inc. (Reno, Nev.) "Our GateSync software will bring airliner information-updating into the 21st century," said Michael Sanderson, director of engineering at Proximetry. "Instead of sneaker-net, WiMAX will begin updating onboard information wirelessly as soon as each plane lands." Today, airlines use "sneaker-net" to update onboard manifests, flight plans and in-flight entertainment files: in other words, a person wearing sneakers (for speed) carries either a laptop or a stack o...

Wouldn’t it be nice if Wi-Fi were everywhere? And cheap? Maybe even entirely tax-subsidized? - mashable.com Unfortunately, that dream-turned-partial-reality is slowly deteriorating. Ian Urbina of The New York Times reports today that attempts to service cities in various parts of the US are offering more and more discouraging news. Some are even hanging up their hats. Urbina writes that “in Tempe, Ariz., and Portland, Ore., for example, hundreds of subscribers have found themselves suddenly without service as providers have cut their losses and either abandoned their networks or stopped expanding capacity.” This is surely a tough pill to swallow for many users. There are projects for Chicago, Houston, Miami, and San Francisco that have all been “temporarily tabled.” And even Philadelphia officials are reported as saying that they “are not sure when or if the promised network (EarthLink being the commissioned ISP for Pennsylvania’s capit...

Verizon, AT&T dominate FCC wireless auction http://www.sfgate.com/ Verizon Wireless took the biggest prize in a federal auction of wireless spectrum that holds the promise of creating a nationwide, high-speed data network, the Federal Communications Commission said Thursday. The mobile carrier paid $4.7 billion for the coveted C block, a large swath of 700 megahertz spectrum that will be vacated next year when broadcast television providers go digital. The spectrum auction, which involved some of the last valuable sections of available airwaves, brought in a total of $19.6 billion, almost twice what the FCC had originally estimated. The spectrum is favored because of its wide reach and ability to pass through walls. In addition to Verizon Wireless, AT&T scooped up a number of licenses that build on its considerable 700 MHz holdings. Between the two giant telecom companies, they paid about $16 billion. Google officials, who successfully lobbied to include open access rules ...

Wi-Fi to cover 60 miles Intel researchers stretch Wi-Fi to cover 60 miles Off-the-shelf hardware anchors Intel's rural connectivity platform By John Cox Intel recently demonstrated a modified 802.11 radio link with a data rate of around 6 Mbps and a range of more than 60 miles. Intel achieved this extraordinary range using off-the-shelf hardware, including parabolic antennas, for its project, dubbed the rural connectivity platform (RCP). The key innovation was a change, borrowed from cellular networks, to the underlying 802.11 media-access-control layer that allowed for a more efficient signal, and translates into longer reach. RCP is one of several research projects intended to extend the Internet into rural areas, especially in developing countries. The idea is to use low-cost, low-power Wi-Fi radios to bridge between wired Internet connections in a city and wired and wireless connections in small, rural villages. RCP's unprecedented range minimizes th...

Muni-WiFi player Azulstar shifts gears to WiMAX Muni-WiFi vendor Azulstar said it plans to upgrade all of its existing muni-WiFi networks with WiMAX. Using equipment from Airspan Networks and Redline Communications, Azulstar will roll out WiMAX across 15 cities in the Midwest and Southwest, including the nation's first muni-WiFi market Grand Haven, Mich., which will be the first market to upgrade. The vendor is using licensed 3.6 GHz spectrum. The WiMAX network is in final stages of testing in Grand Haven and first customers are being connected. The network will overlay the existing unlicensed WiFi mesh networks, which will continue to operate supporting visitors and residential customers as long as there is demand. Legacy WiFi customers wanting to move to WiMAX will receive a discount toward their adapter. Azulstar, which cites WiMAX as having better economics, performance and reliability, said it will continue its strategy of owning and operating municipal wireless ...

Intel Reveals new WiMax-WiFi Roaming By Sr. Editor Lonny Paul http://news.tigerdirect.com/ Converged networks. Seamless link exchange. Passing Off to the next tower. These are all things we take for granted - and your cell phone is a great example. While you can seemingly stay connected for an endless stretch of the road - you are actually making those calls from different cellular towers along the way. The closest tower is generally going to get the call. As you move, that changes and they are passed between one another without you even realizing it. The same is happening now with new efforts to allow seamless roaming from WiMax to WiFi. With this technology, mobile users will be able to migrate to and from their home to the mobile network - the recently announced options by T-Mobile for a mini cell tower in your home (via WiFi) already provide for roaming without fail between WiFi and the cellular network. But now, with the rollout of WiMax already happening nationwide,...

University Of Minnesota Plans Wi-Fi Network For 80,000 The installation will cover 1,204 acres across the university's two campuses and supercede a current network of scattered Wi-Fi access points. The University of Minnesota is preparing to roll out what it calls the "world's largest 802.11n deployment" at the Big Ten university's two campuses. The deployment, to get under way in May, eventually will serve 80,000 students and staff. The deployment, to be implemented by Trapeze Networks, has the advantage of having a single customer. Many large municipal Wi-Fi deployments have been delayed or killed because competing commercial, political, and consumer interests couldn't agree on a successful rollout plan. The installation, which will cover 1,204 acres across the university's two campuses, will supercede a current network of scattered Wi-Fi access points set up by different equipment suppliers and will support future wireless technologies like WiMax. 2008-03-09 13:49:00
