Methodology to assess Telemedicine applications http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/ The study should provide accurate and up-to-date information on telemedicine applications in use in Europe, with a particular focus on cross-border solutions. The study will also need to identify enablers and obstacles to the deployment of telemedicine applications and provide an initial overview of national policies in telemedicine. Illness prevention and disease management need to be improved and a more active participation of patients in the process of personalised care should be enabled. The study will act as a benchmark document on how and to what extent telemedicine applications have been deployed in healthcare systems and it will provide a structured framework to assess the effectiveness of telemedicine applications and their contribution to quality of care. The study will be a key instrument to supporting the activities of the ...

Joint Technology Initiatives In a...
2008-06-05 13:20:00
Joint Technology Initiatives In a limited number of cases, the scope of the RTD objectives and the resources involved justify setting up long-term public-private partnerships in the form of "Joint Technology Initiatives" (JTIs). JTIs aim to achieve greater strategic focus by supporting common ambitious research agendas in areas that are crucial for competitiveness and growth, assembling and coordinating at European level a critical mass of research. They therefore draw on all sources of R&D investment - public or private - and couple research tightly to innovation. JTIs may become operational by setting up a Joint Undertaking under Article 171 of the Treaty to create a single, Europe-wide and industrially-driven R&and programme that will help EU industry to achieve world leadership. JTIs will combine, for the first time, a critical mass of national, EU and private resources within one coherent, flexible and efficient legal framework; they also ram...
Electronic Identity: easy access to...
2008-06-04 19:58:00
Electronic Identity : easy access to public services across the EU Today, the European Commission unveils a pilot project to ensure cross-border recognition of national electronic identity (eID) systems and enable easy access to public services in 13 Member States. Throughout the EU, some 30 million national eID cards are used by citizens to access a variety of public services such as claiming social security and unemployment benefits or filing tax returns. The Commission's project will enable EU citizens to prove their identity and use national electronic identity systems (passwords, ID cards, PIN codes and others) throughout the EU, not just in their home country. The plan is to align and link these systems without replacing existing ones. The project will run for three years and receive €10 million funding from the European Commission and an equal contribution from the participating partners. Get this document ...

The Search for Mobile Intelligent Roaming Lately there has been a lot of discussion around the general notion of mobile users with dual-mode devices seamlessly making voice calls, and connecting and transferring from a private Wi-Fi network (WLAN) to a public cellular network and vice versa. To learn more about this service in the area of enterprise mobility, I asked Aleem Rizvan, senior product manager for wireless, to talk about some of the business and technology drivers for—what we’re calling—mobile intelligent roaming, as well as the IT challenges for bridging voice over multiple wireless networks and some of the current mobile devices used in the enterprise today. An unlimited source of Internet addresses to be on stream in Europe by 2010 http://ec.europa.eu/ Increasing demand for Internet based services means that there would not be enough addresses to support this expected growth, if no action is taken. Encouraging internet users and providers to adopt the latest Internet Protocol (IP version 6 or IPv6) will provide a massive increase in address space, much in the same way as telephone numbers were lengthened in the 20th century. The European Commission today set Europe a target of getting 25% of EU industry, public authorities and households to use IPv6 by 2010, calling for concerted action at European level to get all actors prepared for a timely, efficient change to avoid extra costs for consumers and give innovative European companies a competitive advantage. (27/05/2008) "This is very much a case of a stitch in time saves nine", said Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner ...

What is a Grid ? The short answer is that whereas the World Wide Web is a service for sharing information over the Internet, the Grid is a service for sharing computer power and data storage capacity over the Internet. The Grid goes well beyond simple communication between computers, and aims ultimately to turn the global network of computers into one vast computational resource. The reality is that today, the Grid is a "work in progress", with the underlying technology still in a prototype phase, and being developed by hundreds of researchers and software engineers around the world. GRNET, the EGEE Partners in Greece have produced an introductory video, which we have available as a stream. Grid Cafe has more information about Grid Computing in general. http://egee1.eu-egee.org/ http://www.eu-egee.org/ -------------------- Che cos'è un Grid? European Commission launches the 2008 European e-Inclusion Awards to help fight the digital divide The European Commission has just launched the first ever European e-Inclusion Awards. As part of the European Commission's e-Inclusion Initiative, the Awards will celebrate the best and most imaginative uses of Information and Communications Technology to reduce digital and social exclusion. Digital technologies are an essential part of daily life. We use them at work, in day-to-day relationships, in dealing with public services, and a lot more besides. They touch our lives in ways which we are often unaware of, or don’t even think about. Yet an estimated 1 in 3 Europeans fail to benefit from new technologies. Overcoming this ‘digital exclusion’ is not just a social necessity, it is estimated that it could be worth up to €85 billion to European companies and governments over the next five years. The European e-Inclusion Awards aim to inspire p...

2008-05-20 09:33:00
Meraki is offering free Wi-Fi to San Francisco. Why? There is no business model behind it, but mesh Wi-Fi company Meraki is offering free Wi-Fi access to San Francisco, one neighborhood at a time, as I discovered when I passed by the company's folksy demo table at my local farmers' market last month (see report from local newspaper). But Meraki is not in the business of just blasting money out the door, which it appears to be doing in San Francisco, and there is a method to this program. Meraki's business is actually quite straightforward: it sells wide-area Wi-Fi network hardware, and provides the management consoles to go with it. If you want to give a building, a street, a town, or a city access to Wi-Fi, you buy some Meraki Wi-Fi boxes, plug a few of them in to broadband connections, and they configure themselves to wirelessly share the connection among each other and among users. Stick this free gizmo in your window in San Francisco to boost the Meraki signal, for your...
