Cheezhead the Magnificent

Cheezhead: Datester. Ed McMahon: Datester? (Cheezhead rips the envelope open and removes the card) Cheezhead (reading): The name of the new company once IAC buys Facebook and throws Jobster in the mix for fun.Yep, IAC owns Match.com, the world's biggest online dating and personals property. See, I told you Cheezhead had a sense of humor. But I didn't realize he was so Carnacesque? If you don't believe me? Check out his latest post: writing on wall for vertical job search engines?Jobseeker Warning:If you visit WirelessJobs.com because you are interested in a new job, don't follow the link. Although this is ridiculously interesting stuff, chances are you might not find it nearly as intriguing as some of my other posts. If, however, you make your living in the recruiting industry, chances are you've already been to Carnac's Cheezhead's site. If not, beat a quick path - now. I hear that, in the fashion of the great, departed Carnac, he's placing curses on all recruiters...

Top Ten Job Hunting Myths
2007-03-13 16:52:00
Kiplinger's Erin Burt posted these 10 job hunting myths over 2 years ago, and I just found them posted by Clipmark's skwirlinator. However, many of these ideas have aged well over the past two years and I believe they are relevant for today's college grads. My commentary is the italicized text below Erin's words of wisdom: 1. Finding a job after college will be quick and easy. Stevie-baby's been saying this for a long time and nothing has changed. 2. The Internet is the best place to look for a job. NetworkNetworkNetwork!3. I'll make at least $40,000 at my first job out of college. Maybe, but don't pre-spend assuming it to be so. In fact, don't pre-spend period (esp if it's for a car!). Get over it - call Dave Ramsey if you need a good financial slap in the face. 4. There's no room for negotiation with an entry-level salary. There's no better time to start honing your salary-negotiation-skills. 5. The person who gets hired is the one who can do the job best. Th...

Blogosphere: "The Report of My Death Was an Exaggeration"
2007-03-13 15:27:00
If only Mark Twain had been alive during this blogging heyday, his quote might have been directed at the blogosphere, rather than himself.Nope, the blogosphere isn't dead.microP (the techPR blog-rapper) reported yesterday that new bloggers flatlined in 2005 (source: State of the News Media report) . Alas, do not despair - his post had nothing to do with an emergency room situation that would later involve a coffin.Rather, that while the share of the online population that tried blogging peaked in January 2005 at 10%, it has hovered since at 8%.However, mP also noted that blog readership is climbing, and that data from Pew (last year) suggests 40% of the online population has read a blog at least once.Deep breath, bloggers. All is well. But I still wish I could have seen Mark Twain in full blogging regalia.Wow, just think of the posts he would have cranked out by late evening candlelight.Hmmm...now I can't stop myself from asking,"Which blogger is today's Twain?"

The Match Game
2007-03-09 19:26:00
Not so long ago I promised you some insight on writing a different kind of resume that was specific to the job you were applying or interviewing for. This is something that is a little out there in the eyes of the traditionalist and you may find a little too bold for you but the first time I saw it, I was very impressed with the way it was put together. So here are the basics of what you are doing with this "outside the box" mini resume.First, take the job description for the position for which you are applying. Most job descriptions are written in a format that have either bullets or are very specific about duties you will perform. Now, think back to previous experience and when you have performed those duties. Now, let's play the match game. Write the duty or function they will want you to perform and then right underneath it, describe a time when you have done that exact thing.Do this for every job duty described in the job posting and either send it along with your resume when yo...

12 Quick Tips to Search Google Like an Expert
2007-03-08 03:48:00
Great tips from Dharmesh Shah (SmallBusinessHub) on how to hone your Google search skills. He doesn't claim to have the one-n-only comprehensive list, but offers up things he's learned through his own search experiences. Some might even be helpful for those engaged in job-search.12 Quick Tips To Search Google Like An Expert Explicit Phrase: Lets say you are looking for content about wireless jobs. Instead of just typing wireless jobs into the Google search box, you will likely be better off searching explicitly for the phrase. To do this, simply enclose the search phrase within double quotes. Example: "wireless jobs" Exclude Words: Lets say you want to search for content about internet marketing, but you want to exclude any results that contain the term resume. To do this, simply use the “-“ sign in front of the word you want to exclude. Example Search: wireless jobs -verizon Site Specific Search: Often, you want to search a specific website for co...
How to Get from Greet to Great
2007-03-07 14:24:00
Excellent post by Scott Ginsberg titled, From Greet to Great !Read this post if you have any contact, even if minute, with customers. It will help you understand the power that lies in the first words you speak (wow, does this ever apply to those of us in the recruiting business!).Here's the intro to Scott's post:The first words out of your mouth frame the entire customer experience.Consider these two facts:1. According to The Wall Street Journal from February 17th, 2006, you have less than five seconds to make a first impression.2. According to a 2007 report on www.hotelexecutive.com, your greeting influences the customer’s perception more than any other act of engagement. If you underestimate the power behind our ability to frame the customer experience, just listen to the people around you. Call the most successful recruiter - sales exec - furniture salesperson you know and listen to their voice-mail.Watch the way they greet a potential customer - listen to the first words the...

5 I'd work for, 5 I wouldn't!
2007-03-07 05:07:00
My new friends at wirelessisfun.com just posted an interesting piece called, "5 I'd word for, 5 I wouldn't!"Well, to be specific, it wasn't the whole crew, just Dan.Here's the post:Getting a job in the Internet era is trivial if you’re serious about your skills and really want to go the next mile. It’s a personal matter to choose fun over paycheck, relocation over your home town or country, alternative crew or 9-5 army.Since I deal with the following companies in various ways, I’ve settled on which I’d say yes or no to if they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Not all of them are in the wireless field, but they are all Internet players. The beloved- 1. Skype, because they preserve identity and stimulate individual development, while managing to hold a functional team. Plus, working for Skype is fun.2. Moo, because they use Macs, are innovative and have a good sense of humor.3. Meraki, because they’re still young and I could get there in time to make them work.4. A...

Alcatel Launching Mobile Phones in North America
2007-03-07 04:40:00
It looks like my buddies over at Alcatel (now Alcatel-Lucent) will be getting in to the handset biz.Wow - just sounds strange to think about Alcatel being in the handset business (hey, John-Boy, let's have lunch and take mobile handsets!) Here's the scoop:Alcatel Mobile will be launching its presence in the North America n market later this month at the CTIA Wireless trade show with partner Cellatel.Their lineup of GSM/EDGE phones falls in the lower and mid range end of the mobile spectrum. Cellatel trialled several of its "E Series" phones with Cingular last summer, but so far there has been no word if Cingular chose to carry any of the handsets.Based on information from its web site, Alcatel Mobile / Cellatel is targeting the MVNO market and will offer branding/customization services, as well as logistics, support and marketing.source: Phone Scoop.com

Do Not Take This Phone to a Job Interview
2007-03-06 23:03:00
WiF:)) could be right ... this just might be the ugliest phone I've ever seen.If you have a job interview and you carry this phone....do yourself a favor (leave it at home). The interviewer need not know about your taste in wireless phones.Yeah, I dig the big display, and the fact that it's Wi-Fi, but at what aesthetic cost?!I mean c'mon...I know it's all about the technology. And, in this case, I'm paying almost $400 for the Wi-Fi technology. But listen, if I'm layin' down almost 400 bills, that phone needs some class.Sheesh - it's a good thing that it comes with a case...that way the user can keep it hidden from everyone's view.
