Vista, MacBook Air Out - Linux Wins The Hacking Contest
2008-03-31 08:21:00
With Vista hacked on Friday, a Linux laptop remained uncompromised at the CanSecWest PWN 2 OWN hacking contest. The MacBook Air went first; a tiny Fujitsu laptop running Vista was hacked on the last day of the contest; but it was Linux, running on a Sony Vaio, that remained undefeated as conference organizers ended a three-way computer hacking challenge Friday at the CanSecWest conference.Earlier this week, contest sponsors had put three laptops up for grabs to anyone who could hack into one of the systems and run their own software.A US$20,000 cash prize sweetened the deal, but the payout was halved each day as contest rules were relaxed and it became easier to penetrate the computers. On day two, Independent Security Evaluators' Charlie Miller took the Mac after hitting it with a still-undisclosed exploit that targeted the Safari Web browser. After about two minutes work, Thursday, Miller took home $10,000, courtesy of 3Com's TippingPoint division, in addition to his new laptop....

Nanotechnology And The Nokia Morph Concept
2008-03-31 08:06:00
I do not really know if the new technology developed by Nokia Research Center and the University of Cambridge is called ?Morph ? accidentally or on purpose. I mean, take a look at the phone, the way it is almost bent in to a circle and the color of the entire thing. The glowing green, the awesome 3-D flexibility and the ability to change shape at will- all adding up to a world out of ?The Matrix?. So I guess Nokia named it after ?Morpheus?, the man who gave Neo to all of us. So, finally someone is paying a tribute to Morpheus; great news indeed! Morph was launched alongside the ?Design and the Elastic Mind? exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. So basically you can change it in to a circle, a sphere and maybe even a cone to put your ice cream...

MAC Gets Hacked In 2 Minutes
2008-03-28 17:20:00
It may be the quickest $10,000 Charlie Miller ever earned. He took the first of three laptop computers -- and a $10,000 cash prize -- Thursday after breaking into a MacBook Air at the CanSecWest security conference's PWN 2 OWN hacking contest.Show organizers offered a Sony Vaio, Fujitsu U810, and the MacBook as prizes, saying that they could be won by anybody at the show who could find a way to hack into each of them and read the contents of a file on the system using a previously undisclosed "0day" attack.Nobody was able to hack into the systems on the first day of the contest when contestants were only allowed to attack the computers over the network, but on Thursday, the rules were relaxed so that attackers could direct contest organizers using the computers to do things like visit Web sites or open e-mail messages.Miller, best known as one of the researchers who first hacked Apple 's iPhone last year, didn't take much time. Within 2 minutes, he directed the contest's organize...

Google's Search Within A search
2008-03-26 14:28:00
Google has introduced a new and controversial search within a search feature. It lets users search within websites without actually going to the site. There are concerns that this feature could hurt retailers, since users no longer need to actually visit sites to look for products and whatnot. According to the New York Times:Analysts generally praise the feature as helping users save steps, but for Web publishers and retailers, there are trade-offs. While the service could help increase traffic, some users could be siphoned away as Google uses the prominence of the brands to sell ads, typically to competing companies.?Google is showing a level of aggressiveness with this that?s just not needed,? said Alan Rimm-Kaufman, a former executive with the electronics retailer Crutchfield who is now an Internet consultant. Google?s aggressiveness, Mr. Rimm-Kaufman said, ignores a user?s desire to reach a specific destination and it costs those Web sites visitors. What do you think of the feature?

12,616 lens Digital Camera
2008-03-26 14:19:00
With the megapixel race already past the point of noticeable benefit to consumers, it looks like the next camera arms race will be the number of lenses your rig sports -- a team at Stanford is working on a 3D camera that uses 12,616 micro-lenses to generate high quality 3 megapixel images with self-contained "depth maps" that measure the distance to every object in the frame. The system works by focusing each lens above four different overlapping sensor arrays, which work in concert to determine depth -- just like your eyes. Unlike similar systems, the Stanford rig is able to use that data to create a depth map without lasers, prisms, or even complex calibration, which will allow the team to shrink the tech down to compact and cellphone camera size. Once it's ubiquitous, the teams says depth map information can be used to do anything from enhancing facial recognition systems to improving robot vision, but there's still a long way to go.

Why Technical People Get Paid Less Than Managers
2008-03-21 09:35:00
Engineers, Scientists, and Technicians almost never make as much money as business executives.Let?s see a rigorous mathematical proof that explains why this is true:Postulate 1: Knowledge is Power (Knowledge = Power)Postulate 2: Time is Money (Time = Money)As every engineer knows, Power = Work/TimeSince Knowledge = Power, and Time = Money (from postulate 1 and 2 above), we have Knowledge = Work/MoneySolving for Money, we get: Money = Work/KnowledgeThus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity regardless of the Work done. Conclusion: The Less you Know, The More you Make.

Microsoft Latest Multi-LucidTouch Technology Concept
2008-03-12 16:32:00
In a Microsoft annual Techfest event earlier this week Microsoft has unveiled new mobile prototype LucidTouch which addresses the problem faced by the users in using the touch screen devices, currently fingers blocks the graphical icons of the touch screen devices, the new LucidTouch technology tries to overcome this problem by controlling the graphical interface from the back of see-through device. This technology won?t let your fingers block your browsing or navigation in touch screen devices like GPS systems and mobiles, the users will be able to interact with the device from the backpanel. The device also support multi-touch input, you can use all your fingers simultaneosly to operate the device.?The key to making this usable is what we call pseudo-transparency,? said Baudisch. ?By overlaying an image of the user?s hands onto the screen, we create the illusion of the mobile device itself being semi-transparent. This pseudo-transparency allows users to accurately acquire targets w...

Bionic Human Eyes
2008-03-12 16:02:00
This is part of the Boston Retinal Implant Project, which is supposed to improve on a bio-electronic implant that delivers images to the brain via a connector the width of a human hair. The project has been around for more than 20 years and Dr. Joseph Rizzo III, the founder of this endeavor, points out that ?there has been this explosion of interest in this field because basically the technology in the last 20 years has become miniaturized enough and sophisticated enough so that for the first time we can imagine building something small enough to put in the eye.?The main purpose for now is to restore partial sight to people who have slowly gone blind because of degenerative diseases of the retina. The bionic eyeball the size of a pencil eraser is implanted behind the retina at the back of the eyeball, working as a light transmitter. However, scientists say that this would only work for patients who were once able to see and have partially intact optic nerve cells. People who are bli...

ThruVision's T5000 Camera 'looks' through clothing
2008-03-12 15:45:00
A camera that can "see" explosives, drugs and weapons hidden under clothing from 25 metres has been invented. The ThruVision system could be deployed at airports, railway stations or other public spaces. It is based on so-called "terahertz", or T-ray, technology, normally used by astronomers to study dying stars. Although it is able to see through clothes it does not reveal "body detail" or subject people to "harmful radiation", according to the designers. "It is totally and utterly passive", said a spokesperson for Thruvision. The portable camera, which has already been sold to the Dubai Mercantile Exchange and Canary Wharf in London, will be shown off at the Home Office scientific development branch's annual exhibition later this week.

India won the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia after beating South Africa in a thrilling final. Set a revised target of 116 to win from 25 overs after the second innings was reduced because of rain, South Africa needed 26 runs from the remaining two overs but despite the best efforts of captain Wayne Parnell and wicketkeeper Bradley Barnes, the junior Proteas fell just 12 runs short. This is India?s second U/19 Cricket World Cup title. Dozens of India flags fluttered around the ground in support of the team with the 6,000 or so fans enjoying the festive atmosphere. In the end they nearly descended into delirium as a smiling Virat Kohli accepted the cup from ICC President Ray Mali and lifted it above his head as the confetti fell from the stormy Kuala Lampur sky. His side was probably the most consistent during this tournament and with its talent, application and team spirit there can be no doubt the title was fully deserved. But the runner-up must not be forgotten ? South Africa ...

Intel To Release Hex-Core Processors
2008-02-27 10:20:00
According to Maureen O'Gara from sys-con.com, it seems that Intel is all set to release a processor with Six cores. Yes, you heard me right...six. I think Intel understands that if AMD can start making tri-cores then may be six cores isn't a very bad idea. The six core or hexacore processor goes by the codename "Dunnington" and has been designed at the Intel Design Center at Bangalore. It is a successor to the Harpertown processors of the Xeon-line of server processors from Intel. It is again supposed to be a sandwich of 3-dies, but this time its 3 dual-core processors that have been stitched together. The cores are sharing a 16MB L3 cache. Like other Penryns, Dunnington still uses a front-side bus. Dunnington is supposed to come at different clock speeds, with a total power consumption of less than 120W.Intel will be releasing these just before the Nehalem are out and should be an interesting development. AMD on the other hand is just struggling with speed of the processors as wel...

Bill Gates - "Keyboards Diminishing"
2008-02-24 14:23:00
People will increasingly interact with computers using speech or touch screens rather than keyboards, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates said."It's one of the big bets we're making," he said during the final stop of a farewell tour before he withdraws from the company's daily operations in July.In five years, Microsoft expects more Internet searches to be done through speech than through typing on a keyboard, Gates told about 1,200 students and faculty members Thursday at Carnegie Mellon University.Gates also said the software that is proliferating in various branches of science, including biology and astronomy must become even more advanced."They're dealing with so much information that ... the need for machine learning to figure out what's going on with that data is absolutely essential," he said.Microsoft is trying to establish ties not only with university computer science departments but also with reseachers in other scientific areas "to help us understand where new inven...

TCS Shows Exit Door To 500 Employees
2008-02-06 17:59:00
Within days of cutting salaries of its employees, the country's largest software exporter TCS has shown the doors to 500 employees after their performance was found wanting. Tata Consultancy Services, which employs over 100,000 workers, has said it would cut 1.5 per cent from employees' salaries in the fourth quarter, as it fell short of certain financial targets following a sharp rise in the value of rupee against dollar and the slowdown in the US Economy. "Employees with experience of two years and above across the company who were unable to meet the performance requirements of our company are asked to look for other jobs commensurate with their abilities," TCS spokesperson Pradipta Bagchi said. He, however, asserted that no employee has been sacked or fired. As a policy the only time when TCS dismisses people is for disciplinary reasons, he added. The company had said that the salary cut would be in the variable component, which accounts for 30 per cent of the total pay of the e...
