IBM build ?Silicon nanophotonics? Supercomputer-on-a-chip
2007-12-07 09:48:00 Supercomputers may soon be the same size as a laptop if IBM brings to market research detailed on Thursday, in which pulses of light replace electricity to make data transfer between processor cores on a chip up to one-hundred times faster. The technology, called silicon nanophotonics, replaces some of the wires on a chip with pulses of light on tiny optical fibers for quicker and more power-efficient data transfers between cores on a chip, said Will Green, research scientist at IBM.The technology, which can transfers data up to a distance of a few centimeters, is about 100 times faster than wires and consumes one-tenth as much power, Green said. The lower power requirement should reduce operational costs for supercomputers, he said.''"The silicon nanophotonic effort is a high-bandwidth, low-power technology for cores to communicate," Green said.Full Article More About: Technology , Build , Silicon , Chip , Supercomputer
Split-Screen Technology
2007-12-05 16:20:00 Microsoft researchers in Bangalore are developing a software that splits a computer screen in two halves, each side with its own operating system, desktop, applications, cursor and keyboard.Microsoft says the technology could help small businesses and schools in developing countries reduce their computer costs and could even work in homes where more than one family member needs access. The innovation could salvage time otherwise wasted as one person waits to use a computer. "At the most basic level, we are allowing two users to work completely independently on the same machine, sharing both the processor and monitor," said Udai Singh Pawar, assistant researcher and project leader. The working prototype uses a standard 19-inch screen, but can also work on 15 and 17-inch screens, which are more common at small businesses in India. The solution is software-based and does not require the user to trade their current PC for a new one. Only the software has to be installed and a second mou... Microsoft Tafiti
2007-12-05 14:12:00 Microsoft Tafiti is a new search site built on their silverlight technology. The user interface looks pretty good it provides a dynamic interface with intuitive graphics. You can search web, Images, news, rss feeds and books. When you enter the search term, search results will open on the center pane and small icons popup on the left side, you can switch between search products using those icons. Search results can be saved on the right sidebar space, and can be emailed or blogged to windows live spaces. But will many people use it? It still uses Microsoft search, which in my opinion is not as relevant as Google or Yahoo . And the site, while pretty, runs comparitively very slow.I think people want fast results served on a clean white page with as little clutter as possible (example). Bells, whistles and pretty graphics are fine, but functionality rules. That being said, Microsoft isn?t out there claiming that this is their new search paradigm. It?s an experiment to show the power of S... More About: Microsoft , Silver , Light

Bring your Stuff to work with eyeOS
2007-11-28 06:48:00 Some analysts and businesses lately have been all atwitter about something called "The Consumerization of IT". This is the MBA?s way of saying ?People bringing their computers and gadgets to work because their equipment at work is vastly inferior?. It?s a little more complex than that ? it also indicates a trend where us consumers are dictating how IT will spend its money and function in the coming years?but never mind that! The bottom line is that, if you?ve used your personal phone for work or brought a laptop to work (or a USB thumbdrive for transferring files, Treo for managing email and documents, etc.) you?re part of the trend. But you see, this stuff drives the IT department nuts. These poor guys and gals are up to their elbows every day dealing with crashes, coffee spills on laptops, virus infestations, hacker intrusions and more. The last thing they need to worry about is how to keep you from infecting the network by plugging your iPod into a work computer! But hey, don?t sw... More About: Work , Stuff

Microsoft vs Infosys
2007-11-14 06:24:00 Global software giant Microsoft has pipped domestic IT giant Infosys as the best company to work for in India, according to a new study released on Tuesday. International consultancy firm Mercer ranked Microsoft India at the top of its 10 Best Companies to Work for in India 2007 list, which is dominated extensively by technology firms. The study was jointly conducted by Mercer with financial magazine Business Today and international market research firm Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS). Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown, they say. Indian IT?s iconic employer,Infosys Technologies, should know exactly how that feels. In the six BestCompanies to Work for In India surveys that have preceded this, the Bangalorebased tech giant has topped four of them. This year, it has stumbled.Rather, it?s been tripped up; partly by the sheer scale-up in its workforce and partly by the soaring aspirations of its young employees. So, the former Numero Uno stands humbled at #5. Instead, there?s a new #1 o...

The Fly Fusion Pentop Computer
2007-10-21 10:45:00 You probably saw the marketing for it. How you can take a piece of paper, draw numbers and a ?+,-,x and /? and suddenly you have a calculator. But that was just the beginning. It looks like Leapfrog is taking the Pentop Computer to a whole new level with the updated Fly Fusion Pentop Computer. While its main focus is still for middle school age students who need a solid digital study aid, the Fly Fusion seems to have matured with a design that incorporates more advanced features - thereby making it of interest to older students and even adults as well. For note taking, the Fly Fusion automatically digitizes everything you write (sadly, only in print, not cursive). Then, note takers can synch the pen with their PCs and use the included OCR software to create a perfect digital copy (well, almost, it?s OCR afterall). No real scanning, mind you, the Pen just remembers what you?ve written thanks to the same paper technology makes the creation of a paper calculator possible. Tiny dots prin...

Remove Empty Directories & Empty Folders
2007-10-12 17:44:00 Usually, PC users love organizing their files into various folders. Sometimes we move our files from one folder to another, but we forget to delete the empty folder. In other cases, you install an application and then uninstall it, but it leaves behind some empty folders. Your system probably contains hundreds of dozens of folders, without a single byte of data in it. This is exactly where Remove Empty Dire ctory (RED) comes into action. This free application does exactly what the name says. It scans your drives or directories for empty folders and removes it. By default, it scans hidden folders, but ignores system folders to prevent any harm to your PC. It is also possible to integrate RED into Windows Explorer. As a Programmer and also i keep on installing new softwares, I hate seeing too many empty folders, so I regularly delete unused files and empty folders. RED was still able to find 496 empty folders out of 15150 folders, which is quite a shocking number to me! More About: Software , Directories , Folders , Fold
