WordPress spam-fighting plugin
2008-02-05 19:41:00 After getting enough daily comment spam to annoy me, I decided to activate Akismet, the WordPress spam-fighting plugin. Akismet is short for Automattic Kismet and comes installed with the WordPress installation. I thought that it would be automatically activated but I checked my plugin list and it wasn’t. So what does Akismet do? It is a spam-fighting web service created by Matt Mullenweg of WordPress and his team. Akismet checks the content of WordPress comments and trackbacks anonymously with an online server. Then determines if the comment is a spam or not. Each time someone comments on your WordPress blog, the comment is submitted to the Akismet web service. It has algorithms that will check and work out if the comment is a spam. I decided to do some research to learn how to secure my WordPress installation and I came across a very useful WordPress security whitepaper that you can download from blogsecurity.net for free. It is technical but I recommend that anyone who owns a WordPress blog to read it because there are quite a lot of useful information that you can implement on your blog and secure it from hackers. For starters, I have upgraded to WordPress 2.3.2 which fixes some major security flaws. I also googled to find out if there are other tips I can implement to protect my blog from further attacks. I came across Matt Cutts’ post on how to protect your WordPress installation. For those of you who don’t already know, Matt Cutts works for Google and is the head of Webspam team.
