The keypad backlights on the Ferrari edition have been changed to red to match the paint job, and the handset ships with some Ferrari-related content pre-installed.The Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition includes 2 Ferrari video clips, wallpapers and ringtones, and pre-registration for the Ferrari website. Curiously, the phone also has a full copy of The Bourne Identity movie pre-installed, though that doesn't have anything to do with Ferrari. The phone is scheduled to be available in Q1 2008, but pricing has not yet been announced. More About: News , Motorola , Handset
Prison for UK Drivers Who Use Cell Phones
2007-12-21 06:58:00 It appears that the cost of driving while using a mobile phone in the UK just went up. Recent prosecution guidelines handed down by the UK's Crown Prosecution Service have changed the charge for driving while using a mobile phone from "Careless Driving" to "Dangerous Driving." While careless driving offenses were typically punished with community service terms or fines, dangerous driving offenses can leave a driver with a prison term of up to two years. You read that correctly. Drive while texting or dialing your mobile phone and you could end up serving time. While it seems unlikely that a random person driving down the road while texting in England will be pulled over by police and end up in prison, it does increase the severity of the situation greatly when it comes to accidents - especially those that involve a death. Under the new guidelines, a driver that causes a death on the road while using a mobile device could end up being convicted of manslaughter, whi... JetBlue, Yahoo!, RIM to Offer In-Flight WiFi
2007-12-10 01:32:00 According to Reuters and others, Yahoo ! and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry line of smartphones, have teamed up with U.S. based airline JetBlue to offer limited, but free, WiFi access to passengers with WiFi enabled laptops and BlackBerry smartphones. The service, which will be first offered on a New York to San Francisco flight on December 11th, will let customers access a special version of Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, and BlackBerry corporate email.Sadly, for now, passengers will not be able to use the WiFi connectivity for general web surfing or for downloading email attachments due to bandwidth limitations. While WiFi access on planes might be pretty new to the U.S., airlines like Lufthansa and Air Singapore offered full WiFi access on some of their flights from 2004 through the end of 2006, when Boeing pulled its Connexion WiFi service from the air. Nokia Launches 3G 6263 for T-Mobile USA
2007-12-05 22:46:00 Today Nokia announced the new 6263, a mid-level 3G handset for T-Mobile USA's upcoming 3G network. Very similar to the 6267 that was announced back in June, the 6263 is differentiated from the 6267 by its downgraded 1.3 megapixel camera and the 3G frequency bands it supports. T-Mobile USA's upcoming 3G network will function on separate bands for uplink and downlink connections, so while its devices will often be listed as supporting the 1700/2100MHz UMTS bands, such devices would not be compatible with the pure 2100MHz networks used in Europe and elsewhere.Apart from its 3G connectivity options, the 6263's other highlights include dedicated external music keys, a microSD card slot (512MB card included, with support for up to 4GB), and a large QVGA resolution main display. For those that prefer their conversations hands and wire free, the 6263 also support Bluetooth headsets and stereo headphones. The built-in xHTML browser should offer a decent mobile web experience, backed up by... More About: News , T Mobile

2007-12-04 17:36:00 While it has yet to announce any truly new handsets from Nokia World in Amsterdam, today Nokia announced a new variant of an existing design. This new Evolve version of the 3110 uses what Nokia is touting as a 'bio-cover', an external shell that is made from more than 50% renewable material instead of the normal plastics that are typically used on other handsets. Additionally, the 3110 Evolve ships in a small, space-saving package that is made of 60% recycled materials. The charger that is included in this new compact package is Nokia's most energy efficient yet: Nokia claims it uses 94% less energy than the U.S. government's Energy Star program requires.Like the 3110 Classic, the new 3110 Evolve is a tri-band GSM device that is equipped with a 262k color, 160x128 pixel display. Verizon Wireless Chooses LTE for its upcoming 4G Network
2007-11-29 16:21:00 Verizon today announced that it will be using LTE for its upcoming 4G high speed network. LTE, Long Term Evolution, is the 4G upgrade path of choice for WCDMA and GSM networks. While this choice might seem strange for a CDMA based company, it will mean that Verizon's network will be compatible with Vodafone's planned LTE network. This better positions both companies for global roaming agreements and the ability to compete in a global market. Vodafone currently owns 45% of Verizon Wireless .LTE is designed to offer higher bandwidth speeds, lower latency, and improved efficiencies, among other improvements. Verizon Wireless and Vodafone are both expecting to begin LTE trials in 2008.Richard Lynch, Executive Vice President and CTO of Verizon stated, "...With a host of new devices and applications, and a particular focus on embedded wireless in virtually every piece of electronics you buy in any store, we believe LTE is the best technology with global scale to deliver on the promi... Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands, among other European Union states, oppose the declaration, but so far lack the number of votes required to block the measure.By selecting a standard, the European Commission requires that all states support and encourage the use of the technology. Those opposed to the measure want all current mobile TV standards to be added to the approved EU standards list, not just DVB-H. More About: News , Mobile , Standard

Verizon to Allow Outside Phones and Software on its Network
2007-11-27 05:03:00 Today Verizon Wireless announced that it will be loosening its constraints on the devices and applications that can be used on its network by its customers. The company has said that it will allow compatible devices that it does not sell itself to be used on its network as long as they meet a "minimum technical standard", after having been tested in its testing labs. It remains unclear what this really means to consumers who wish to import exotic Korean market CDMA phones and similar devices, but it does seem to suggest that other hardware makers not directly affiliated with Verizon will be able to make devices for the network and that perhaps devices sold by Alltel and Sprint might be welcomed on Verizon's network. The other part of the announcement is that Verizon will be publishing documents that will enable outside developers to create applications that work with Verizon's handsets and network, perhaps leading to a source of applications that are cheaper than those of... Sony Ericsson Z310
2007-11-27 04:14:00 The Z310a is Sony Ericsson 's latest entry-level offering for AT&T's lineup. While light on features, the Z310a is stylish and offers solid build quality, which should help it stand up to a bit of abuse over time. The Z310a is a small flip phone for the entry-level crowd. Though somewhat thick at 25.4mm (1"), this stylish handset is smooth, and fits nicely in your hand. The soft curved edges make it feel very sleek. I have the black model for this review, though the Z310a is also available in light pink and a bronze color. The phone weighs 91g (3.2oz) and is nicely weighted so that it feels solidly built, and not too light. The phone does not creak when in use, which further attests to its solid construction. There is a volume rocker on the left side of the Z310a, with the rest of the buttons being found on the keypad. The flip is well built and snaps nicely into place when opening or closing. The keypad of the Z310a is well lit with bright blue lights. The keys are all on a... More About: News , Sony-Ericsson
