Motorola has hooked up with Ferrari to freshen up the MOTO Z8 handset. The Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition comes in a sharp red and black color scheme, but otherwise offers the same features as the original Z8, including the UIQ user interface running on the Symbian OS, a 2 megapixel camera, and a microSD expansion card slot. The keypad backlights on the Ferrari edition have been changed to red to match the paint job, and the handset ships with some Ferrari-related content pre-installed.The Z8 Ferrari Limited Edition includes 2 Ferrari video clips, wallpapers and ringtones, and pre-registration for the Ferrari website. Curiously, the phone also has a full copy of The Bourne Identity movie pre-installed, though that doesn't have anything to do with Ferrari. Google recently unveiled its latest cellphone related product: Google Sync. Google Sync is a tool that will synchronize a mobile phone's internal calendar with Google's own free Google Calendar service. Currently the application is available only for RIM's BlackBerry devices, which include the Curve 8300 and the Pearl 8100 family of devices, among others.The application is capable of synchronizing the date, time, location, and notes associated with a calendar appointment, as well as available/busy time settings and reminder settings. Google Sync has an automatic setting that will cause it to synchronize the phone with the user's Google Calendar account every two hours, though the application will also synchronize immediately when an appointment is updated on the BlackBerry device by the user.Google Sync can be downloaded from the Google Sync website. Lately the FCC has been leaking like a sieve. The latest handset to be outed is the Samsung SCH-U940, headed for Verizon Wireless' lineup. Few details are known from the FCC filing, though Phonearena.com claims a 2 megapixel camera and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, similar to that of the F700.The SCH-U940 supposedly also features Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support for stereo headphones and 150MB of internal memory, with a microSD card slot for expanded storage. European Union Allows Motorola To Buy 50% Stake In Sony Ericsson's UIQ

The European Union has approved a deal between Sony Ericsson and Motorola for Motorola to acquire a 50% stake in Sony Ericsson's UIQ, the user interface that UIQ Technology developed for the Symbian OS before it was acquired by Sony Ericsson in 2006. Sony Ericsson and Motorola announced the deal earlier this year at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, UK.Both Sony Ericsson and Motorola currently offer UIQ-based handsets. The Sony Ericsson P1i and W960 are the latest touchscreen UIQ devices, while Motorola's MOTO Z8 brings a non-touchscreen format to the table. As part of the deal, UIQ Technology will be available for licensing by any vendor on equal terms.

According to Reuters and others, Yahoo ! and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry line of smartphones, have teamed up with U.S. based airline JetBlue to offer limited, but free, WiFi access to passengers with WiFi enabled laptops and BlackBerry smartphones. The service, which will be first offered on a New York to San Francisco flight on December 11th, will let customers access a special version of Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, and BlackBerry corporate email.Sadly, for now, passengers will not be able to use the WiFi connectivity for general web surfing or for downloading email attachments due to bandwidth limitations. While WiFi access on planes might be pretty new to the U.S., airlines like Lufthansa and Air Singapore offered full WiFi access on some of their flights from 2004 through the end of 2006, when Boeing pulled its Connexion WiFi service from the air.

In another sign that wireless phones are becoming standard equipment for most people in the United States, AT&T today announced that it will fully withdraw from the pay phone market by the end of 2008. The company said that it is time for it to stop offering public pay phone service and prison pay phones services in its 13-state home service area. The company noted that Bell South, with which it merged in 2006, had already pulled out of the pay phone market.AT&T estimates that there are 1 million pay phones in service in the United States, down from 2.8 million in 1998. This past Friday Google officially announced that it will apply with the FCC to be able to participate in spectrum auction that will take place in January, 2008. The auction is for wireless spectrum in the 700MHz frequency band, which is currently used for analog TV broadcasts. Once it is freed up by the nationwide transition to digital TV, the vacated 700MHz frequency spectrum will be available for wireless internet service for consumers.Earlier this year, Google encouraged the FCC to place new rules on the auction, mandating that the winning party allow consumers to download any software application on any compatible device they wish to use on the new spectrum.

Zander Steps Down as Motorola CEO

Earlier today Motorola announced that long time CEO Ed Zander will step down from his position at the head of the company on January 1st. He will be replaced in the short term by current President and COO Greg Brown until a permanent replacement can be named at the May annual shareholder's meeting.Greg Brown joined Motorola in March of 2007, having formerly been the head man at Micromuse Inc., a network management company.Though he will no longer be the company's top executive, Ed Zander will continue to serve in his current role of Chairman of the Board of Directors.

European Commission to Push DVB-H as EU Mobile TV Standard

The European Commission declared today that it plans to promote the Nokia-led DVB-H mobile TV technology as the standard for the European Union. Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands, among other European Union states, oppose the declaration, but so far lack the number of votes required to block the measure.By selecting a standard, the European Commission requires that all states support and encourage the use of the technology. Those opposed to the measure want all current mobile TV standards to be added to the approved EU standards list, not just DVB-H.

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it will be loosening its constraints on the devices and applications that can be used on its network by its customers. The company has said that it will allow compatible devices that it does not sell itself to be used on its network as long as they meet a "minimum technical standard", after having been tested in its testing labs. Nokia has finally released a firmware update for the original N95-1 smartphone. This update, dubbed v20.0.0.015, adds several exciting features to the handset, including a search box on the main home screen and previews for N-Gage and the Nokia Music Store.
