FCC Leaks WiFi/UMA Enabled Blackberry Pearl 8120

The FCC recently published documents detailing an updated Blackberry Pearl 8120. The Pearl 8120 appears to be similar to the recently announced Pearl 8130, though opting for quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) support instead of CDMA. The Blackberry Pearl 8120 also sports a 3.5mm audio jack and microSD card slot. A notable addition, however, is the built-in WiFi, for high speed data. Also mentioned in the user manual is a reference to UMA, or Unlicensed Mobile Access.UMA is the technology behind T-Mobile USA's HotSpot@Home service, which allows handsets to seamless transfer a call between typical cellular networks and a WiFi hotspot. T-Mobile USA also recently launched the Blackberry Curve on their Hotspot@Home service.

Samsung BlackJack II Goes on Sale Friday

Samsung USA has announced that the BlackJack II (SGH-i617) will go on sale on Friday , which is known in much of the USA as Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. Initially the BlackJack II will be available in black only, but the red wine colored unit will go on sale on December 12th. The BlackJack II will be available from AT&T online and retail locations for US$149.99 with a new two year contract, after a mail-in rebate.

Verizon Launches 3MP Samsung FlipShot Cameraphone

Today Samsung and Verizon Wireless launched the new FlipShot, a 3 megapixel camera equipped folder that is formally known as the SCH-u900. The FlipShot gets its name from its rotating top flip, which allows its 262k color QVGA display to be oriented for optimal photo taking and video recording. The FlipShot also comes with a number of other camera related features, such as a business card scanner and a TV out function (an optional cable is required).The FlipShot supports most of Verizon's extended services, like its over the air V CAST Music store and its GPS based VZ Navigator application. T-Mobile Germany to Sell iPhone Unlocked, w/o Contract

Due to a recent legal action by rival Vodafone, Germany 's T-Mobile will begin offering its newly launched Apple iPhone unlocked and without a contract. Vodafone managed to get a preliminary court injunction against T-Mobile Germany that prevents it from selling the iPhone SIM locked to its network. As such, T-Mobile has stated that it will begin offering the iPhone unlocked for 999EUR (US$1482) at its retail locations. Since its launch two days ago, the iPhone had only been available in Germany from T-Mobile for 399EUR with a 2 year contract. T-Mobile has stated that any customers that purchased the iPhone under contract will be able to receive a free unlock code for their device.They warn, though, that unlocked iPhones used on other networks may will not have full functionality. J.D. Power and Associates have released Volume 2 of the 2007 U.S. Wireless Mobile Phone Evaluation Study, which offers a glimpse as to how U.S. consumers are buying and using their mobile handsets. The study asks consumers what factors play a part in their purchase decisions in addition to questions regarding bills and mobile service usage statistics.Volume 2 of this study shows that mobile phone owners who use features such as email, camera, and music on their handsets have an average monthly service bill of $77, $14 more than those who don't use those features. Yesterday Alltel announced its Axcess Family Finder service for parents interested in keeping track of their children. The service requires that the child have one of three phones, including the LG AX8600, Samsung U520, and Samsung R510 'Wafer'. Parents can view their child's location from any mobile phone with web access, or from a personal computer with web access.Axcess Family Finder was developed for Alltel by WaveMarket, Inc, and costs $9.99 a month per child for unlimited tracking updates. The Google led Android project released the first version of its software developer kit (SDK) this week. It also released a few videos that highlight some of the features of the platform. The videos show the Android platform running on both touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices, and also show a number of glossy UI features that look very much like they came from an Apple iPhone.Among the things you'll notice in the videos, two of which you'll find below, are that received messages and other notices can be navigated to at the top of the home screen and accessed, SMS messages are threaded in an IM chat session type application, and that the platform supports some rather nice looking OpenGL powered 3D capabilities.
