Skype Petitions FCC to Enforce Open Mobile Networks
2007-02-26 20:57:14
In a move that could benefit end users greatly, VoIP service provider Skype has petitioned the FCC to apply the 1968 Carterfone decision to wireless phone networks, opening up the possibility of easier use of services similar to Skype on mobile handsets. The Carterfone decision allows customers to attach any device to the phone network, provided it does not harm the network itself, which Skype sees as extending to allow any application to run on any device that can access the network.Currently, mobile operators limit the kind of data traffic permitted on their phone networks, especially in the case of applications like Skype that can steal revenue from them by allowing cheap VoIP calling. Skype's argument for opening up data networks is that doing so would offer "tremendous new sources of price competition provided by entities such as Skype."The principal behind the Carterfone decision currently applies to the wired phone network and cable TV networks. It has a QVGA (240x320) resolution display, 64MB of internal RAM, and 128MB of built-in flash storage. The triband GSM (900/1800/1900MHz) device even supports Bluetooth and has a 1.3 megapixel camera. Tegic XT9 Comes to Mass-Market Handsets
2007-02-15 20:47:07
AOL subsidiary Tegic Communications has announced from 3GSM this week that its XT9 predictive text system, as seen on Windows Mobile devices, will be available on mass-market handsets with standard 12-key mobile phone keypads. The Tegic T9 predictive system is found on many handsets on the market today, and XT9 brings great enhancements to an already handy interface. The two features that will most appeal to end users are the word prediction list and integrated spelling correction. Word prediction has long been seen on Windows Mobile devices, as well as in the iTap system used on Motorola handsets, and works by predicting the next word in a sentence based on the word just entered. Possibly even more helpful is the spelling correction feature, which will compensate for users tapping incorrect keys or missing keys. For example, someone hoping to type the word "tomorrow" would still get the correct word even if they erroneously keyed in 86666769, or "tommorow."The Te...

HTC S710 QWERTY Smartphone from 3GSM
2007-02-15 08:46:05
Windows Mobile devices have been shipping with QWERTY keyboards for some time, even in the slide out design seen here with the new HTC S710. Most of these devices are PDA phones though, meaning the HTC S710 is a little different, running the Windows Mobile 6 Standard smartphone operating system and lacking a touch screen. This means the S710 is much more phone like, and it has become one of our personal favorite devices from 3GSM in Barcelona this week. The HTC S710, previously known under the code name 'Vox,' is a quad-band GSM device with GPRS/EDGE data connectivity. Though there is no 3G data compatibility present, the device does come with 802.11b/g WiFi on board. At just 120g (4.2oz), the HTC S710 houses a 2.4" QVGA resolution display and 2.0 megapixel camera. Bluetooth v2.0 with the A2DP stereo headset profile is available, and the device ships with 128MB ROM, 64MB RAM, and a microSD memory expansion slot.HTC aim to have the device in stores before the end of Q1 this yea...

Nokia N77
2007-02-15 08:46:05
The Nokia N77 comes as the manufacturer's second smartphone tooled for mobile TV viewing, using DVB-H to bring programming to the handset. Based on the S60 platform, Nokia's N77 comes with handy features for mobile TV like a seven-day TV guide, ability to schedule reminders for programs, and a landscape TV experience. The TV viewer will also remember the last channel you were watching on startup.Nokia has not skimped on the non-TV features though, with a 2 megapixel camera, UMTS high-speed data, and a microSD memory card slot. The device looks very much like a tweaked N73, complete with the stereo speakers, though it loses out on some specifications in exchange for the inclusion of DVB-H. Bluetooth is also on board, with A2DP for you to use compatible wireless stereo headphones. The Nokia N77 will see limited market distribution in Q2 this year.
