Richard Bloor talks to Yadong Liu, Senior Product Manager, Sybase about the introduction of M-Business Anywhere for Symbian. M-Business Anywhere, part of the Sybase Information Anywhere platform, is designed to enable enterprises in implementing Web-standards based applications for mobile devices, laptops, and tablets. As a result, Web developers can use their existing skills to implement fully interactive applications across a range of devices. The product consists of a back-end server and device client. The Multiple Drive Support (MDS) Plug -in for the S60 3rd Edition SDK for Symbian OS, Feature Pack 2 brings the features of the S60 UI in line with the underlying multiple drive support offered in Symbian OS v9.3.All S60 devices so far have offered multiple drives, however these have been a phone memory drive and a memory card or hard disk drive, both with fixed drive letters. In the future S60 devices may have, in addition to the phone memory, two memory cards or a memory card and built-in mass storage drive. Skype has released a Java client for mobile phones, compatible with S60 and UIQ devices. While the application looks like a "normal" Skype client known from PC or Windows Mobile , it is not a true VoIP solution as it uses the mobile network (rather than the Internet) to make and receive calls. This means that in addition to your Skype credit, you will also be charged by your network operator for a local call. Verizon Wireless has unveiled the details on its recently announced 'Any App, Any Device ' initiative, which will allow 3rd party cell phones and applications to be used on the carrier's network.Device manufacturers will be able to develop new devices that can take advantage of Verizon's CDMA/EV-DO network without the device being sold through Verizon's stores. Devices will need to be submitted for testing and certification, which Verizon estimates could take up to 8 weeks. The certification is valid for 36 months, after which the phones will need to be retested. It appears that Alltel is set to launch a new device, known as the LG Glimmer, soon. The Glimmer is a slider handset that sports a large 2.8" touchscreen display and 2 megapixel camera. It also is capable of 3G data speeds, thanks to its support of Alltel's EV-DO network, and comes equipped with Bluetooth and a microSD card slot.The Glimmer weighs in at a slightly hefty 127g (4.5oz) but still features a rather thin 15mm (.6") profile.
