Intel Renames The Skulltrail
2008-03-03 06:25:00
Intel made an official announcement that they have changed Skulltrail’s name into the Intel Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform. Not a very wide decision I think, but they probably know better. The gaming platform is based on the D5400XS and on the 3.2GHz QX9775 Core 2 Extreme chips, priced at $649 and $1,499 respectively. The test results show that the 3DMark06 score was of 6481 and the Cinebench 10 score was of 20,160 when combined with the CrossFire ATI Radeon HD 3870 cards. Reports say that they will start shipping the ex-Skulltrail as of next month. “Congratulations” for the new name!

How Bit Torrent Works
2008-02-18 05:47:00
BitTorrent is a protocol that enables fast downloading of large files using minimum Internet bandwidth. It costs nothing to use and includes no spyware or pop-up advertising. Unlike other download methods, BitTorrent maximizes transfer speed by gathering pieces of the file you want and downloading these pieces simultaneously from people who already have them. This process makes popular and very large files, such as videos and television programs, download much faster than is possible with other protocols. In this article, we'll examine how BitTorrent works and how it is different from other file-distribution methods. In addition, you'll learn how to use BitTorrent and what the future might hold for this innovative approach to serving files over the Internet. Traditional Client-Server DownloadingTo understand how BitTorrent works and why it is different from other file-serving methods, let's examine what happens when you download a file from a Web site. It works something like...

Windows Vista: Networking and Security
2008-02-18 05:36:00
n the past, computer networks primarily existed in schools, businesses and computer enthusiasts' homes. But today, many households have several computers that need to share files, printers and connections to the Internet. Unlike most businesses, many average home users do not have a networking expert to set up and maintain their networks. For this reason, Windows Vista includes several network setup wizards, which walk users through creating networks and sharing devices. It also has several built-in network tools that are accessible through a Network Center: Network Explorer lets users find files on networked computers and move them from to place. It's similar to other Windows Explorers that let people find files on their own computers. Network Map creates a visual map of all the computers and devices on the network. Vista also includes a Network Awareness feature for people who need to use their computers in multiple locations. Network Awareness detects which network a person'...

Hack Wireless WPA Network
2008-02-11 07:50:00
This short tutorial walks you through hacking and cracking WPA/WPA2 based networks which use pre-shared keys. WPA/WPA2 supports many types of authentication beyond pre-shared keys. aircrack-ng can by now only crack pre-shared keys. So ensure airodump-ng shows the network as having the authentication type of PSK. If you know howto hack or crack a WEP based network, you might know that the WEP cracking and hacking methods are based on statistical methods. This WPA/WPA2 is unlike the WEP hacking / cracking approach based on plain brute force techniques. The brute force method is rather slow, since the pre-shared key can be from 8 to 63 characters in length, which might require too much time to crack.

Google Adds IMAP Support To GMail
2008-01-28 06:41:00
GMail has gained IMAP support, one of the most requested features for Google ’s web-based e-mail service. More than storage space or other features, free web-based IMAP access pushes GMail over the top when compared to offerings from Yahoo, Microsoft and most other web-based e-mail services. If you log into your GMail account and head to “settings,” the tab for “Forwarding and POP” should now read “Forwarding and POP/IMAP.” If it doesn’t, be patient, Google will be rolling out the new IMAP features across the service over the next few days. If you’re not familiar with IMAP, it’s like POP access, but allows your changes to live on the server rather than just your e-mail client. For instance, if you move a message in Thunderbird via POP, the movement isn’t mirrored in GMail, but with IMAP it is. With IMAP you can access your mail via your desktop client, read mail, make changes and have those changes mirrored by any other client accessing the account. If you a...

XBox Live for Windows Vista
2008-01-23 10:17:00
Now for a perfectly good reason to update to Windows Vista , at least if you're a 360 owner. Microsoft has just announced that by this summer, Xbox Live will be launching on Windows Vista ."Windows Vista marks the biggest investment from Microsoft around Windows games since Windows 95, making games easier, safer and more fun to play on the PC," said Microsoft's Bill Gates as part of his key notes during the start of this week's CES. "For consumers, we believe gaming is one of the top reasons to upgrade to Windows Vista."In line with this announcement, The Live for Windows will be hosting many similar features from Live service, like the Friends list feature. Given the stuff we've seen moving to Vista like Geometry Wars and XNA, we'll be waiting for more news to come our way as the CES warms up. And hopefully, we'll see Vista's yet to be conceived OS-tan make its debut.

Microsoft and Ford bringing "Sync" to cars this year
2008-01-23 10:13:00
As expected, it's been announced today that the Blue&Me system originally debuted with Fiat in Europe is finally coming to the States by way of Ford , but not without a name change: "Sync ." The setup offers integration with Bluetooth-enabled phones and music players via both A2DP / AVRCP and USB 2.0 connections - and yes, the iPod's and zune's right there at the top of the compatibility list, despite Microsoft 's involvement. Other nifty (and potentially driver-distracting) features include the ability to have text messages read aloud, voice recognition for control of both phone and music functions, and phonebook transfer. Best of all, the system's upgradeable - primarily for compatibility with future players, but it also leaves the door open for additional functionality down the road. Look for the Sync to get synced on twelve model year 2008 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles with availability starting later this year.

The Basics Of Network Cable Testing
2008-01-22 07:32:00
How to Avoid Crosstalk You’ll come to find that the most common mistakes are usually the simplest to avoid. For instance, crosstalk is very commonly created when connectors are not installed properly at both ends of the cable. Crosstalk is the effect we get when electromagnetic energy from one cable leaves an imprint on adjacent cables. (You’ll often see this referred to as “noise.”)This usually isn’t a problem, however, since we twist wires inside Ethernet cable to cancel out this effect. So how, then, does crosstalk become such a problem? You’ll notice that the Ethernet cable on the right has too much wire left over- we actually need to crimp the connector to the point where no internal wiring is visible. It’s important to note that while the wires do need to be separated to properly install a connector, they should only be separated as little as possible. Otherwise the lack of cancellation will create crosstalk- and possibl...

Rent Movies Through iTunes
2008-01-21 07:08:00
Enlarge pictureWe've all got used to buying music online and, for some time now, buying it without all the DRM crap and using it as we consider fit. One can also buy movies (only those distributed by Walt Disney at the moment) straight from the iTunes store, the favorite shopping place of every Apple fan you and I know.According to Financial Times, another step in this direction has been made by Apple and the 20th Century Fox studio, which have signed a deal that will allow the end-user (you, me and everyone out there who knows what online means) to rent a movie for an unknown - yet - amount of time and use it for that period, as he/she ("it" if the case) considers it appropriate. As the source reports, this ground-breaking deal will be publicly announced during the MacWorls show that will take place next year on January 14th.Apart from being quite a breakthrough for the online movie distribution business, this deal will allow Apple to further spread its FairPlay DRM s...

Mac OS X vs. Linux (Red Hat) vs. Windows 98 and Above Including Windows Vis
2008-01-21 07:02:00
Enlarge pictureMicrosoft's Windows operating system came on top out of three different alternative platforms including Mac OS X, Linux (Red Hat), and Solaris 8/9/10, in terms of the volume of holes it contains. Taking into consideration that when it comes down to security vulnerabilities less is actually more, various versions of Windows, from Windows 98 to Windows Vista account for fewer flaws than direct rivals Mac OS X and Linux. Although in the past, Jeff Jones, Security Strategy Director in Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing group, has played the operating system vulnerability counting game and the results were disputed due to his affiliation with the Redmond company, this time around its independent security company Secunia doing all the counting."Red Hat was found to have the most number of vulnerabilities (633), with 99% (629 vulnerabilities) due to third-party components. Solaris, which had a total of 252 vulnerabilities, came next and had 80% (201) due to th...

7 Tips for Great Photos in the Dark
2008-01-13 15:44:00
Follow these seven helpful tips to improve your night photographs. Shoot During Dusk The amount of light still available during twilight allows a faster shutter speed to create short motion blurs. Some of the best night photos are taken during dusk; when the sky isn't completely black. Taking pictures during dusk will show more colors and details in the distance and will let you use a faster shutter speed. Use High ISO A simulated image comparing blur to noise. Which image would you prefer? Use a high ISO if required. It is better to get recognizable photos of your friends that are grainy than blurry photos. You can reduce noise with image editing software but you can't remove blur. Keep it Steady A photographer using her elbows to provide steady support for the camera. Taking photos at night requires slow shutter speed. To shoot bright pictures without the blur at night, use a tripod or monopod to keep your camera steady. Tricks To Help Sort Out Your Email
2007-12-26 11:51:00
Many people don’t realize you can add more folders to your email program, to store important emails, or emails from a particular person, these people have 1000’s of emails in their inbox, and have to scroll through them all, to find a particular email. There is a much easier way. In Outlook Express or Outlook, simply rightclick on your inbox folder, and select the option new folder, give the folder a name, ok it. Now just drag emails from your inbox into the folder. I have about 100 folders and subfolders from my inbox, one folder for each friend, one for paypal, one for each bank, etc. You can make as many folders as you like, in the same way, from any of the folders already there, each year, I make a new folder from my sent folder, and drag all the emails I sent that year into it, it makes finding emails so much easier. Hotmail: You can also make these folders in your hotmail account, with the main inbox folder open, just click the downward facing arrow just to the right ...

How To Browse The Web In China When Your Favorite Sites Are Blocked
2007-12-26 11:37:00
If you want to see the differences between Google’s top level domains, try Google’s Image search from 2 different URLs: images.google.com images.google.cn Type in the Search box: “Tian'anmen Square massacre” or “Tian An Men Square massacre”. Ironically, this translates to “Gate of Heavenly Peace”. Convinced? It is well known that in China , certain websites like BBC and CNN are blocked. But you can get around it by use of a Proxy Server. What is a Proxy Server? A Proxy Server services requests from clients by forwarding requests to other servers. If you are computer “C”, and you want to access server “S” but it is blocked, point your client’s web browser to Proxy Server “P”. So C -> P -> S An example of such a site is www.kproxy.com (ignore the pop-up windows) but if you search the web for proxy servers, you can have a list of thousands. Some are even more specific on what services you want enabled or disabled, such as removing JavaScrip...

Over the years of working with computers I have noticed many common problems that people seem to confront me with. I decided to put the top 10 questions I have been asked here, so that you may learn something from them and save yourself some money! First, I would like to say a couple of things: 1. Computers consist of parts (hardware) and instructions (software), you need both to operate, and each and every one part/instruction can be replaced. 2. When you are looking for the cause of your problem ALWAYS start at the physical part of the problem.1. I have spyware on my computer! or.. I am getting many pop ups and weird things on my screen. This is the most single complaint I have heard from people over many years. They ask me - "How do I remove the spyware on my computer? I...

How To Avoid The Google Sandbox
2007-12-20 08:30:00
There still is a lot of discussion going on wether the Google Sandbox exists or not. Some say it exists, some say it doesn't. Just pretend it does exist, how is it possible that some SEO's don't get hit by the sandbox filter? First of all, let me explain to you what the Google sandbox is. The sandbox filter is a filter that Google uses on keywords with high search volume and high competition. The whole mindset of the filter is that new website go in some sort of quarantine so they don't rank high in the search engine result pages of Google. This quarantine could take from several months to a year. This was originally introduced to block out spam websites. Before the sandbox filter was born, as a spammer you could make a website, spam Google with it, get banned, and instantly make another website and get your original ranking in Google back again. But with another domainname. And because Google isn't really fast in giving penalties and bans it takes a couple of months before th...

What Is an Internet Filter?
2007-12-20 07:44:00
Internet filters have their fair share of advantages and disadvantages. Here is some more information about content controls. The Internet totally encompasses our lifestyles. Be it entertainment, information, shopping or communication. Today, it has become the global businessman’s tool, the lonely person’s companion and sad to say, the criminal’s playground. Yes, the Internet is a dangerous place; yes there are proper tools that offer a good level of security to a common person on the Internet. No, not many use it, and those who use it do not exactly know all the features of Internet security tools. There are now Internet Filter s that intend to make the Internet a better place to live in. These Internet filters are also sometimes termed as content controllers. Internet filters are used to block any one of the following types of content: Sexually Explicit Content/Child Filter/Family Filter: This is one of the most common requirements of such an Internet filter. How to download anything
2007-12-20 06:55:00
If you’re going to illegally download stuff, please do it right so that you don’t get caught. Don’t use services like Kazaa or Limewire to get your goods. They’re filled with junk and can get you found out and sued by the copyright owners. If you are going to download music, games, software, movies, anything, use these simple steps. Get Peerguardian 2. Peerguardian blocks known government and anti-p2p groups. This keeps them from connecting to you via the tracker and knowing you are downloading. That means it will be a lot harder for them to nail you for downloading..Get a torrent program. I suggest either utorrent utorrent or Azureus. I usually don’t search for the actual files I need using these programs, just use them to download.Search for your torrent. I use The Pirate Bay and Mininova. Both still allow US visitors, and I can usually find what I need. There are also private trackers, but don’t worry about those for now. Once you get the hang of downloading, you can ...

5 Tips to Make Firefox Faster
2007-12-16 08:23:00
Do you still use Internet Explorer? I am sorry if you do. You have to switch to something else. Anything else! I used to use Maxthon but switched over to Firefox quite a while ago. I really liked Maxthon but at the time I made the switch to Firefox I was sure happy that I did. I made some changed to my Firefox the other day and it really helped. Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection, you can speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page instead of one at a time. By default, it’s optimized for dialup connections (why??). Here is what you need to do: 1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):2. Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”3. Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”4. Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at one t...

British hacker can challenge US extradition
2007-12-16 06:54:00
A British computer expert, accused by Washington of "the biggest military hack of all time", was given permission to take his fight against extradition to the US to Britain's highest court. Gary McKinnon was arrested in 2002 after US prosecutors charged him with illegally accessing government computers – including Pentagon, US army, navy and NASA systems – causing $700,000 worth of damage. A district court ruled in May 2006 that he should be extradited, a decision upheld at London's High Court in April this year. But on Monday, three of Britain's top judges gave McKinnon permission to take his case to the House of Lords. McKinnon's lawyers argue that sending him to the US would breach his human rights, be an abuse of the English court process and should be barred as his extradition was sought "for the purpose of prosecuting him on account of his nationality or political opinions". Between February 2001 and March 2002, using his own computer in London, McKinnon gained una...

Nutty German inventor creates mind-controlled synthesizer
2007-12-12 08:09:00
Neuromancer Krischan Schallenberger of German y must be tired of those unwieldy appendages he was born with — some call them fingers — because he's created a mind-to-sound hood that, when coupled with a synthesizer, allows him to crank out flighty tunes just by thinking happy thoughts. Or angry thoughts, or mellow thoughts, or thoughts about how cool all of those wires and hookups look. Schallenberger is still working to iron out a few kinks that go along with mind control, such as rapid fatigue and visual distortions if the hood is used too long. He refuses to test the hood on animals and has shouldered the burden entirely himself, which is, given the uncertain nature of the technology, highly admirable. All right, all right — stop dialing little Suzy's piano instructor to cancel. Schallenberger's hood is in fact a fake. The synthesizer in the back, however, is a real e-mu synthesizer from the '70s, like the kind Frank Zappa used.

Surf the web while driving if you really hate safety
2007-12-12 07:47:00
You can get the Internet on your laptop in many places now due to the wonders of WiFi hotspots, but your car is one of the last places to be a virtual dead zone of Internet access. Sure, your cell phone can hop on an EVDO signal and do some pseudo-surfing, but what if you want your real computer to connect while driving? Well you could always get one of these AirBox CM3s. It's a little wireless router that'll pull that hot EVDO signal out of the air and allow you to connect a few PCs to it in your car. Designed to work while moving, it's supposedly "reliable at over 100MPH," you know, in case you wanted to check your email while risking your life. The modem itself will set you back $500, with Sprint's EVDO service another $59 a month.

Microsoft's SenseCam helps dementia patients with recent memories
2007-12-12 07:26:00
A research group run by Microsoft in Cambridge, England, has developed a digital camera called the SenseCam for Alzheimer's and dementia patients. It hangs around the patient's neck and takes wide-angle lens pictures that capture most of what the patient is able to see. The camera has light and heat sensors that prompt it to take pictures as the user's surroundings change throughout the day. Alternatively, the camera can be set to take pictures every thirty seconds that can be turned into short movies that remind patients what happened over the course of any specific day. The results for patients using the cameras have been pretty astonishing so far: one woman who could only remember 2% of events from any given week could recall 80% of major events that occurred over a six week period when she reviewed the SenseCam's images for an hour every two days. You don't have to have a neurological disorder to want to remember what you were doing two weeks, two months, or two years ag...
