Leeway Seen in China Internet Rules
2008-01-11 14:56:00
By MIN LEE, AP Entertainment Writer (AP) — China is so keen to keep foreign investment flowing that it probably will let private Web sites work around strict new rules limiting video-sharing to state-controlled companies, analysts say. China-based Web sites already need a government license that only companies majority-owned by Chinese nationals can get, and managers of ...

Phone companies cut FBI wiretaps due to unpaid bills

WASHINGTON (AP) — Telephone companies have cut off FBI wiretaps used to eavesdrop on suspected criminals because of the bureau’s repeated failures to pay phone bills on time. Zombie Computer Army Targets Bank Account Passwords
2008-01-10 17:12:00
By Ryan Singel January 09, 2008 | 6:41:15 PMCategories: Hacks and Cracks Every security geek’s favorite zombie computer army from 2007 — the Storm Worm botnet — has a new trick for 2008, using its huge collection of infected computers to send out phishing emails directing people to fake banking sites that it cleverly also hosts on the computers it remotely controls. The phishing campaign caught the attention of both F-Secure and Trend Micro, who say Storm has never been involved in phishing up to this point. The new campaign may indicate, according to F-Secure, that Storm’s controllers have figured out how to divide the massive army into clusters which it is now renting out to others. The Storm Worm botnet got its start last January with a spam email purporting to have information about the storms that were battering Europe at the time. Users with unpatched Windows machines who clicked on the link in the email were infected with a Trojan that joined the ma...

AT&T and Other ISPs May Be Getting Ready to Filter
2008-01-10 17:09:00
By Brad Stone For the past fifteen years, Internet service providers have acted - to use an old cliche - as wide-open information super-highways, letting data flow uninterrupted and unimpeded between users and the Internet. But ISPs may be about to embrace a new metaphor: traffic cop. At a small panel discussion about digital piracy here at NBC’s booth on the Consumer Electronics Show floor, representatives from NBC, Microsoft, several digital filtering companies and telecom giant AT&T said the time was right to start filtering for copyrighted content at the network level. Such filtering for pirated material already occurs on sites like YouTube and Microsoft’s Soapbox, and on some university networks. Network-level filtering means your Internet service provider – Comcast, AT&T, EarthLink, or whoever you send that monthly check to – could soon start sniffing your digital packets, looking for material that infringes on someone’s copyright. “What we are already doin...

Government piles filesharing pressure on UK ISPs
2008-01-08 18:06:00
Minister threatens legislation deadline By Chris Williams → More by this author Published Tuesday 8th January 2008 15:50 GMT The government turned up the heat on internet providers today, warning that laws to force disconnection of illegal filesharers are already being drafted for a parliamentary debut in November. Lord Triesman, the minister for intellectual property, said that if ISPs can’t agree a voluntary scheme with the music and film industries by the end of summer, he will press Gordon Brown to introduce legislation in the next Queen’s speech. It’s the first time Triesman has put a public timescale on the threat he made last autumn to bypass self-regulation. The minister was speaking at the launch of the government consultation on new copyright exceptions following 2006’s wide-ranging Gowers Review of intellectual property in the UK. Triesman emphasised that the government speaks with one voice on illegal filesharing. “We’re not prepared...

2007 worst ever year for data protection
2008-01-07 13:43:00
Data on 37 million Brits mislaid By John Oates → More by this author Published Monday 7th January 2008 12:04 GMT Last year was the worst ever for data losses in the UK, with almost 37 million people having their private data compromised. The government’s loss of 25 million child benefit records was the largest single screw-up, but other government departments and private companies played their part too. The figures were compiled by the Lib Dems, and party leader leader Nick Clegg said the problems showed the need for a rethink on data protection legislation, as well as calling for the immediate end to the ID card project. Clegg said: “The ID card project is now in freefall, because faith in the Government’s ability to handle personal data has hit crisis point. “There is simply no way that any democratic government can expect an unwilling public to accept having their precious personal data cropped and stored in the world’s largest database when they a...

BT ‘keenly welcomes’ more money shocker By Chris Williams → More by this author Published Friday 4th January 2008 16:45 GMT The schools minister, Jim Knight, has decided that every child in the country absolutely must have broadband at home, and has called on technology vendors to help him make it happen. More than one million UK children don’t have access to a computer at home, according to government figures. The spoofing weakness - discovered by Israeli security researcher Aviv Raff - involves a failure by the open source browser to sanitise single quotation marks and spaces in the “realm” value of an authentication header. “This makes it possible for an attacker to create a specially crafted Realm value which will look as if the authentication dialog came from a trusted site,” Raff explained. Exploitation of the bug might involve embedding a rigged image on a MySpace page that would pose as a log-on dialog to Amazon.com, for example, while actually sending data to systems controlled by hackers. Alternatively, a hacker might attempt to trick ...

China Limits Providers of Internet Video
2008-01-03 15:08:00
Thursday January 3, 2008 10:31 AMBy MIN LEE AP Entertainment Writer HONG KONG (AP) - China has decided to restrict the broadcasting of Internet videos - including those posted on video-sharing Web sites - to sites run by state-controlled companies and require providers to report questionable content to the government. Under the new policy, Web sites that provide video programming or allow users to upload video must obtain government permits and applicants must be either state-owned or state-controlled companies. The majority of Internet video providers in China are private, according to ...
