Researchers from Google have documented serious vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash content which leave tens of thousands of websites susceptible to attacks that steal the personal details of visitors. The security bugs reside in Flash applets, the ubiquitous building blocks for movies and graphics that animate sites across the web. Also known as SWF files, they are vulnerable to attacks in which malicious strings are injected into the legitimate code through a technique known as cross-site scripting, or XSS. Currently there are no patches for the vulnerabilities, which are found in sites operated by financial institutions, government agencies and other organizations. The vulnerabilities are laid out in the book Hacking Exposed Web 2.0: Web 2.0 Security Secrets and Solutions. Skipton Financial Services has confessed to losing a laptop containing records of 14,000 customers. Information exposed by the breach includes names, addresses, National Insurance numbers, and fund investment details of clients of Skipton’s Fidelity FundsNetwork.The laptop was nicked from a locker being used by a staff member of Moore Stephens Consulting, an IT consultancy employed by Skipton Financial Services, on Tuesday evening last week, the Yorkshire Post reports. The machine was password protected, but not encrypted. Skipton has suspended affected accounts as a precaution. A Liberal Democrat MP suffered the online humiliation of having his Facebook account suspended after the social networking site decided he “wasn’t real”. Steve Webb, 42, member of parliament for Northavon, Gloucestershire, tried to log on on Monday but was told “his account had been disabled following complaints he didn’t really exist”, as Reuters explains. A traumatised Webb, who’s had a Facebook presence for a year and boasts 2,500 “friends”, told the news agency: “I sent them an email asking what the problem was and got a response a day later saying they had concluded that my profile was a fake, that I wasn’t really Steve Webb. I’ve been using my U3 USB Stick for almost twelve months, and have to say it’s become one of the most useful widget’s ever purchased. This device wasn’t purchased to provide space, but rather as a device for running software on, which is a USP of U3. A U3 Stick contains it’s own sanitised, sterile working environment which can be plugged into any machine with a USB port. It can be set to automatically scan the host environment for any type of virus/malware/spyware etc, before any programs are run from it. In addition, the U3 stick can be password protected to stop malicious access to it by automated processes, or unauthorised human access. My own is setup to provide a self-contained sterile/secure environment from which I can access email/NNTP/web/SSH tunnelling/SOCKS & HTTP proxies from any computer with a USB and internet connection, essentially rendering such a computer a dumb terminal.
