Fire Alarm Bell Alarm Clock - World’s loudest alarm clock?
2008-01-12 04:57:00
Overview Ever sleep-in because your alarm clock wasn’t loud enough? With this design that is guaranteed not to happen! This hack takes a standard cheap alarm clock, some interface components and a fire alarm bell to get the job done right. Normally these small alarm clocks use a piezo buzzer to attempt to wake you up. The alarm signal is hijacked from the clock circuit board and used as an input to the interface board. From http://hackedgadgets.com/2008/01/11/fire- alarm-bell-alarm-clock-worlds-loudest-ala rm-clock/8/by Alan Parekh   Parts needed and Interface Board Schematic Here is a list of the parts you need for this hack: Cheap Alarm Clock Fire Alarm Bell PNP Transistor4.7K ohm resistor360 ohm resistor (optional)Blue LED (optional)Perf Board  Take apart the Clock, see how it works Taking the clock apart was very simple, a few screws allowed the plastic outer shell to be removed. How Much Would it Cost to Make a Life-Size Working Gundam?
2008-01-12 03:15:00
A full-scale Gundam robot is one thing, but how much would it actually cost to build one that could actually walk? According to an estimate published on the SciencePortal website run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency, the total cost for parts alone would be $725,000,000. That figure would not include labor, fancy weaponry, or any flying capabilities. The whole shebang would be powered by and IBM Blue Gene supercomputer and 30 giant 400KW motors. Taking a look at the materials list, I have a hard time believing that this would actually work if it were built. And, in all likelihood, the parts would cost significantly more than the estimates. So, it appears that Gundam fans will have to wait a little while longer to get their own 60 foot robot killing machine From http://gizmodo.com/photogallery/biggundam /2200964

[CES2008] Electrovaya churns out Scribbler SC4000 series tablet PC
2008-01-12 02:04:00
It's been a hot minute since we've seen a new entrant in the long-standing Scribbler lineup from Electrovaya, so we're fairly stoked to see the SC4000 sneak up on us from behind the monster that is CES. This particular tablet is home to an Intel Core 2 Duo ULV processor, a fingerprint scanner, 1.3-megapixel camera, Windows Vista, integrated Bluetooth and 802.11a/b/g WiFi, 60GB - 160GB hard drive and between 1GB and 4GB of RAM. You'll also enjoy the optional sunlight readable 12.1-inch XGA display, lightweight (3.3-pounds) design and ultrathin (0.85-inch) chassis. No word on a price just yet, but you can certainly phone up the firm's sales team for a quote if you're already sold.by Darren MurphFrom http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/11/electr ovaya-churns-out-scribbler-sc4000-series- tablet-pc/

[CES2008] Mustek's CES 2008 'booth tour'
2008-01-11 12:59:00
We'll be honest, Mustek -- you're not exactly giving us a lot to work with. First you don't release any PR on your new products, then when we get to the booth, you seem unsure if you've even got new products. Of course, we did manage to find your suspiciously-Sharp-ish Blu-ray player, a new widgetified photo frame, and that lovely iPod dock. Check out our "tour" and see for yourself. From http://www.engadget.com/2008 /01/10/mustek s-ces-2008-booth-tour/

Smoker Bell Keeps Nicotine Addicts Happy...but It Doesn't Go Far Enough
2008-01-11 12:07:00
Are you Smoker ??Florian Brillet - Paris architect-  made this unique design. it's enough to smoke two people. if you want feel the nicotine fully, USE this.. :)Instead of treating smokers like outcasts, Paris architect Florian Brillet is embracing them with a new design that is intended to keep them comfortable while enjoying a smoke outdoors. The Smoker Bell is a helmet-like covering that includes a drink stand and an articulated arm that can be attached to the exterior of buildings. Plus, it is big enough to accommodate two people as they slowly kill themselves with nicotine and caffeine. From : http://gizmodo.com/343581/smoker-bell-kee ps-nicotine-addicts-happybut-it-doesnt-go -far-enough My viewpoint on this concept piece is that it doesn't go far enough in its quest to help smokers deal with the endless restrictions society has been placing on them. What they need to do is bring the device indoors and completely enclose the helmet covering. That way, smokers wouldn't have ...

[CES2008] Hands-on with Samsung and Bang & Olufsen's svelte Serenata
2008-01-11 02:28:00
We bumped into the Bang & Olufsen Seranata at Samsung and were sure you'd all love it's crazy design. This has been around for a while now, but it was our first opportunity to get our hands on it. First impressions? Impressive! The feel of the handset is total money, hefty, amazing material choices, and that wheel is almost addictive when you spin it. We popped it open and blasted some tunes and the quality really was good for such a small set, though it is definitely form over function here. We want, right now. From http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/01/10/ hands-on-with-samsung-and-bang-and-olufse ns-svelte-serenata/

Adding Fan Speed Control
2008-01-10 03:26:00
By Dave Williams From HERESimple Fan Speed Control Here is a simple mod to allow the speed of any 12V fan to be varied. All we need to do is insert a rheostat or variable resistor in the 12V wire to the fan. The rheostat should be rated at least 3 Watt, (for fans up to 10Watt), and have a resistance of 20 – 50 Ohms. If you are using this mod on your CPU fan then use the 20 ohm rheostat to prevent fan stall at the slowest speed setting.Maplin Stock codes20 ohm = FX40T50 ohm = FX97FIn the procedure below I have used a 4way Molex extender cable, (the type used to extend PSU leads), but you can just as easily connect the rheostat directly to the fan wires if you prefer. If you choose to apply this mod directly to the fan wires, make sure you connect the rheostat to the 12V wire. (Red) You can double check by plugging the fan into the PSU and note which wire connects to the Yellow wire from the PSU. This will be the 12V wire. (Of course, do this with it turned off!).BE VERY CAREFUL when ...
[CES2008] Samsung's 82-inch QuadHD & 52-inch Ultra Slim LCDs
2008-01-10 03:10:00
Samsung can join Hitachi while crying into their sake as its 52-inch "thinnest non-OLED HDTV ever" is around 4x as thick as Pioneer's 9mm heroin-chic Kuro. Take heart Sammy, because your 82-inch -- and btw, what is with the 82-inch obsession (2005 & 2006 CES), we need to talk about that -- Quad HD display is like looking out of a window, if we had bigger and cleaner windows. Check out the gallery to see what we mean. From http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/eyes-o n-samsungs-82-inch-quadhd-and-52-inch-ult ra-slim-lcds/by Richard Lawler

[CES2008] Bluetrek's SurfaceSound Bluetooth car kit puts a flat speaker on
2008-01-10 03:01:00
Bluetooth car kits are usually pretty fuglicious, but Bluetrek is showing off a couple sunvisor-mounted NXT speaker-based units here at CES that are actually pretty nice. The SurfaceSound DUO (pictured) has a mini-USB port for docking in compatible BlueTrek headsets, and it'll charge 'em up while piping the audio through the speaker -- and if you aren't in a sharing mood, you can pull the headset out and carry on a conversation without interruption. We sort of prefer the SurfaceSound Compact, which is a straight Bluetooth speaker+mic kit, since it's a lot smaller, and doesn't lock you into one brand of headset. Check out tons more shots of both the DUO and the Compact in the gallery. From http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/bluetr eks-surfacesound-bluetooth-car-kit-puts-a -flat-speaker-on/by Nilay Patel

[CES2008] NEC has its own 2880x900 curved gaming display
2008-01-10 02:54:00
We feel sorry for poor NEC. While everyone at CES is busy buzzing about Alienware's gorgeous curved DLP display (including us), NEC is quietly showing off its CRVD-42DWX+ display that's more or less identical: a 2880x900 (double WXGA+) panel with a contrast ratio of 10000:1. We're assuming they're both built by the same ODM, Ostendotech, so hopefully some healthy competition will help bring one of these two beauties within your meager gaming budget. Unfortunately, like the Alienware model, there's no pricing or shipping information. Engadget Spanish has some more pics, so hit 'em up at the read link. From http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/09/nec-ha s-their-own-2880x900-curved-gaming-displa y/by Christopher Grant

[CES2008] HP's CES 2008 booth tour
2008-01-09 17:39:00
From HERE by Nilay PatelHP has an absolutely massive booth at this year's CES -- everything from tablets to cameras to printer supplies has an elaborate installation. We caught up with the oft-delayed iPaq 200 and 300-series PDAs, totally befuddled a PR person by asking him when the tx2000 tablet would get capacitive touch (he just kept repeating "It has a digitizer!" until we backed away slowly), and hid behind a printing display while two MediaSmart TV reps had an exasperated conversation about how to answer the apparently-constant question "Why should anyone buy this instead of a real TV?" There was also one lonely Compaq desktop. Check it all out in the gallery?

[CES2008] Audiovox's CES 2008 booth tour
2008-01-09 17:30:00
From HERE by Evan Blass Just in case you didn't get your fill of Audiovox from our liveblog of Monday's press conference, we've got a full booth tour for your to feast your eyes on, featuring new products from the 'Vox along with family members Jensen, RCA, TERK, and Acoustic Research. Sure, these companies might not produce the flashiest or most popular devices on the market, but what they lack in panache they make up for in affordability -- and in a few cases, as we noticed during our tour, unique functionality. Hit the link below for the full walkthrough, including a shot of a special Engadget fan.

[CES2008] AMD's CES 2008 booth tour
2008-01-09 17:22:00
As sleepy has Microsoft and Intel's booths were this year, they paled in comparison to AMD's showing. Situated in what was essentially a thruway / food court, the sad little cube that was the chipmaker's booth made us feel generally bad. Hey -- it's possible they're just not too worried about CES, and that's fine -- with no new products, announcements, or partnerships to speak of, maybe they're just taking it easy. From HERE

[CES2008] Hands-on / video with the LG.Philips massive 52-inch multi-touch
2008-01-09 17:18:00
We just got back from the super sneaky secret LG.Philips room at CES where the totally Surface-esque 52-inch multitouch display was being shown off. The 1920 x 1080 screen rocks an interesting infrared image sensor to get data about hand placement and movement, and is capable of doing all kinds of gesture and area recognition from two separate touch points. Check the gallery to get a better view, and watch the video if you're excited about the prospect of a flipping, zooming Google Earth on a screen with multitouch. From HERE

[CES2008] Art Lebedev's CES 2008 booth tour
