Regulator calls on national courts to decide on iPhone sales
2008-01-18 01:23:00
BRUSSELS: National courts across Europe must determine if Apple’s contracts linking sales of its Web-surfing iPhone to the networks of specific mobile operators are legal, a European Union regulator has said. A contract term that limits consumers’ freedom to choose a telecommunications operator for the iPhone, which was introduced in Europe in November, may be seen by a court as “unfair” and not binding on users, the European consumer protection commissioner, Meglena Kuneva, said in a letter released Tuesday. The iPhone is available in Germany, Britain and France. In Britain and Germany, the device can be purchased only with an exclusive contract with a network operator, while in France, the iPhone is sold either with a contract or, at an additional cost, without exclusive contracts. A German court ruled in December that the Deutsche Telekom unit T-Mobile could block buyers in Germany from using the iPhone on competitors’ networks. The top European cour...

iPhone Users Call Google in Record Numbers
2008-01-14 17:48:00
The holidays are long-gone, but Google continues to celebrate a mobile success that began with Santa leaving shiny, new iPhones under thousands of Christmas trees. According to The New York Times, Christmas day traffic to Google from iPhones was greater than from any other mobile device. That’s no small feat considering that the iPhone reportedly holds just 2 percent of the global smartphone market. In addition to a slew of new iPhones getting unwrapped and fired up online all on the same day, Google also deserves a chunk of the credit for the influx of Christmas traffic. The search engine has been keeping its developers busy lately building a streamlined mobile browser experience. Last month, Google released software designed specifically for mobile phone web browsers, calling it Grand Prix. BBC: Apple pulls China iPhone release
2008-01-14 17:44:00
Apple and China Mobile have called off talks to launch the US group’s popular iPhone handset to Chinese consumers. Though no explanation was given in China Mobile’s statement, there is speculation that the two firms failed to agree on a revenue sharing deal. The news means the iPhone is unlikely to be released in China anytime soon. China Unicom, the country’s only other mobile network, said last year that while it had no plans to introduce the iPhone it remained open to the idea. Negotiations ‘ended’ Mobile phone analysts have long said Apple would struggle to introduce the iPhone in China. The two have very strong egos and, as in any relationship, that often doesn’t work Duncan Clark, BDA China telecoms research consultancy In addition to difficulty in gaining agreement over a revenue sharing deal, they have pointed to technical and content issues. “We can only say that negotiations have ended for now,” said a spokesperson for China...

iht.com:IPhone pushes mobile makers to think simpler
2008-01-10 02:09:00
Like most manufacturers, mobile phone makers are constantly introducing products in hopes that one of them will be the next big thing. And though the calendar is crammed with opportunities for rolling out shiny new gadgets, few are as high-profile as this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. This year, Motorola has introduced several phones, including one, the MOTO Z10, that allows users to edit video on the cellphone before sending it by e-mail or uploading it directly to the Internet. Sony Ericsson has rolled out a new clamshell, the Z555, that can be controlled in part by a wave of the hand, saving the user the effort of opening the device or halting other functions in use. What else are handset makers considering as they contemplate the mobile phone of the future? Will it be bigger, smaller, lighter? For one thing, analysts generally agree, the manufacturers will focus on making cellphones simpler, thanks in part to the iPhone. Essential functions will be easier ...

Wired.com: The Untold Story: How the iPhone Blew Up the Wireless Industry
2008-01-10 02:02:00
It was a late morning in the fall of 2006. Almost a year earlier, Steve Jobs had tasked about 200 of Apple’s top engineers with creating the iPhone. Yet here, in Apple’s boardroom, it was clear that the prototype was still a disaster. It wasn’t just buggy, it flat-out didn’t work. The phone dropped calls constantly, the battery stopped charging before it was full, data and applications routinely became corrupted and unusable. The list of problems seemed endless. At the end of the demo, Jobs fixed the dozen or so people in the room with a level stare and said, “We don’t have a product yet.” The effect was even more terrifying than one of Jobs’ trademark tantrums. When the Apple chief screamed at his staff, it was scary but familiar. This time, his relative calm was unnerving. “It was one of the few times at Apple when I got a chill,” says someone who was in the meeting. The ramifications were serious. The iPhone was to be th...

CES 2008: Flytunes launches its iphone music service
2008-01-09 23:47:00
FlyTunes is a new kind of music service that is designed for today’s highly integrated and 3G capable cell phones, such as the Apple iPhone. It also works with popular music players such as the iPod family and the Microsoft Zune. FlyTunes offers users “effortless, personalized music” that they can enjoy anytime, anywhere they go. How is FlyTunes “better” than Sirius and XM satellite radio? FlyTunes gives users more of everything they want (more channels, more personalization, more “uptime”) without the negatives associated with satellite radio from Sirius or XM. These negatives include: • Satellite radio services can only operate a limited number of channels (fewer than 200), and they do not work well inside buildings, trains or planes. This limits options for listeners who want to hear truly new artists and styles. • Satellite radio services don’t work with music players consumers already own (iPhone, iPod) , they require the purchase of special receiver h...
