The Difference of Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus

Adware, spyware and computer virus share some similarities, one of which is that all three are major nuisances for computer users. Let's differentiate the three. Spyware is software that does not intentionally harm your computer. What they do is that they create pathways wherein someone else aside from the computer owner can communicate with the computer. Normally spywares record the various types of web sites you visit which are later used by web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups. This is why spyware are usually frowned upon and greatly avoided. They are more intrusive than adware. Spyware have their own separate executable programs which allow them to record your keystrokes, scan files on your hard disks and look at other applications that you use including but not limited to chat programs, cookies and Web browser settings. As long as your child hasn't been quick to the draw and deleted their internet cache/cleared surfing history and cookies you can view someinteresting stuff by viewing their cache files.The cache files are temporary files the computer stores on the hard drive when you go web surfing.Again, probably much more information I can go into, but not the forum for that.Oh, another thing. IPods and viruses - Oh My!

So your teen just unwrapped his or her shiny new iPod and before they could say "Gee thanks!" they were gone to the family computer and in under 3 minutes had downloaded Limewire and installed it. Ever wonder where your child gets all of those music files for their iPods? Granted they will pay for some songs, but a good 90+ % of the rest of it will come from Limewire and other file sharing sites. So what?There are plenty of really bored people out there with nothing better to do than wrap a virus inside a music file. To your kid it looks like a music file and plays like one, whats to worry?The worry is viruses, trojans and the like.Reality: If your anti virus happens to catch a virus or trojan while your kid is on the computer and they know they downloaded it from Limewire do you think that they are going to tell you or close the warning message? And wait for you to make a eBay purchase and have your PyPal or credit card info stolen from a trojan.It happened to me!

Not just there - proxy server in your neighborhood

One interesting fact about proxy servers (The computers that hold proxy web sites) is that they just don't exist in some far off country ending in "stan" or in China.Fact is many kids at school are quite savvy enough to turn for instance their laptop into a proxy web server, and then what? Tell other kids and they will then use this to surf where they're not supposed to.

Ever see a orange fox icon on your desktop and wonder what that is?It's called Firefox, it's Internet Explorers rival, how about a red "O",it's called Opera although not as well known it's also another web browser.So although you thought you were keeping up with what your child hasbeen doing on the Internet by checking Internet Explorer, they've beensurfing the Internet using another browser all along.Even more clever? There are some browsers that can fit on a USB thumbdrive, you need only to insert the thumb drive into the computer, openthe web browser and start surfing, and you would never know!

Another thing that kids pick up easily is how to cover (hide) where they surfed, it's pretty easy and believe me they'll do it if they can...and will. From the Tools options on Internet Explorer they simply go to Internet Options and Settings buttons and clear, clear, clear!

If your the typical non-geeky parent you went out to the big box store, bought the nice priced XP Home computer, turned it on, followed all the easy prompts and had your local cable or telephone company hook the internet to it.You've always used the same account when you logged on, clicking the frog or skate icon or what have you, in fact, you even went and created accounts for the kids to use.What you probably didn't know is that by default XP has this super account called "Administrator", and guess what, it has no password.So what does that mean to you and controlling your children's web surfing?Plenty, if they know this they can login with this account (Switch User - Administrator) and they pretty much have free reign!

I can hear the collective - WHAT?!!! What the heck is an Ubuntu ? Well let me tell you, you have to be fairly geeky to know what Ubuntu is, and that is a form of the Linux operating system. It's very popular and very easy to install and use.But what does this have to do with my kid getting around parental control software and surfing at will on the internet?Pretty easy.Your child merely reboots the family computer with the Ubuntu cd and without installing a thing on the computer has a fully functional "live" operating system to work with, and with that access to the internet and surf wherever.When they're done they remove the cd and reboot, nothing ever happened. Short of being a computer forensics expert you'll never know what happened!Believe me anybody can burn Ubuntu to cd and figure out how to run it without installing very quickly.In later posts I'll discuss ways of preventing this.

Your concerned about MySpace and much more worse web sites your child can stumble upon on the internet. You go by the local big box computer store and they sell you some parental control software for $49 and you install it.The next day you realize your teen has been to MySpace with no problem.What went wrong?What your teen knows and every other kid knows are the availability of thousand upon thousand of "proxy" sites. What do they do? In a nutshell they disguise the website that they are visiting, also known as anonymous surfing?In future blogs I'll discuss how to prevent them from accessing these sites, how to know if they are accessing these sites and other measures you can take.

I want to start off telling parents the cold hard fact. You can installParental Control Software and feel safe and secure that your pre-teen orteen won't ever make it to MySpace or any other nefarious websites whenthe truth is, yes they will and they will find a way.As I had read on another blog, it's a right of passage, just as much aslearning to drive.There is one very simple and hard to deter method, proxy web sites.The other is using a Linux "Live" disk (Usually Ubuntu), booting up withthis and working from the CD, accessing the internet and everything elseleaving no tracks on your computer.And if you think booting up from a Linux Live CD is hard or your son ordaughter "can't" do that, believe me, they can and it's that easy.In my following blogs I will teach you ways to see where they're surfing(But they will probably also learn how to hide that too).Good security measures and other tips and tricks.
