My OS X workspace
2007-03-13 05:21:00
Efficiency is generally a top priority for Mac users — especially for those who use their computer for work. Using a few of Merlin’s tips, I’ve managed to transform my old distracting desktop into a fast-paced, organized, and overall productive workspace. Yes, it’s actually black. Click to enlarge. Probably the most apparent element here is the black ...

Review: iDefrag for OS X
2007-03-11 00:29:00
Remember that myth about Macs not needing defragmentation? Turns out that’s completely false, and iDefrag is a simple, effective solution. I would have never known my drive was so fragmented if it weren’t for Boot Camp. After deciding to give Vista spin on a second partition, I downloaded Boot Camp and went through the setup. No ...

MapWii.com: Find Wii Neighbors
2007-03-10 16:42:20
I’ve been having a whole lot of fun with the Wii I got yesterday for my birthday (review by the end of the week). I just discovered that every Wii has a unique Wii Number, which can be used to add friends and send them messages — mine is 1005 5931 8887 9875. (I’m not sure if there are any games you can play with friends yet, but I’ll keep an eye out.) MapWii.com is a nice Google Maps site that simply allows you to find people around you with Wiis and their Wii Numbers. Very cool.

Gmail Mail Fetcher: Auto-POP3 Mail Retriever
2007-03-10 16:42:20
My Gmail account was just updated with the Mail Fetcher feature — a tool that got a lot of publicity a few months ago when only very few users received the functionality. I’m assuming Google has decided to give the functionality to a much larger Gmail audience, or I’ve moved up on the Gmail beta list. For me, the Mail Fetcher is a great way to move a mail account to Gmail without losing a single message. Before, it was nearly impossible to move older messages to a Gmail account from your POP3 or IMAP account. Now, I can download all of the 2,500 messages from my IMAP account into my Gmail account and officially make the switch. The download frequency seems pretty inconsistent but still reasonable. From what I can tell, the feature is designed to check for mail every 3 minutes. However, at the time of writing my account hasn’t been checked for 15 minutes. Not a huge deal, considering 200 messages are downloaded at a time, but it’s a good thing to keep i...

WordPress How To: AdSense After First Post
2007-03-10 16:42:20
One of the hardest aspects of designing a site is the placement of non-obtrusive ads. I’ve found that placing ads after the first blog post on the homepage is the most ideal place for ads if you don’t have room on the sidebar. Luckily, placing your ad code after the first post is pretty easy with Word Press. First, navigate to your theme directory (/wp-content/themes/yourtheme). Open the file with the layout for each individual post (varies from theme to theme — theloop.php in K2, index.php in most others). After the line that contains if (have_posts()), add the following code: <?php $count = 1; ?> Next, find the end of the post loop, usually where there’s a </div> or something to that effect. It’s usually pretty obvious where the HTML ends. Under the line of code that ends the loop (<? } ?>, <? endif; ?>, or <? endwhile; ?>), add this line, making sure you add your own AdSense code: <?php if ($count == 1) : ?>   ...

Wii: Everybody Votes Channel
2007-03-10 16:42:20
Nintendo just released a voting channel for the Wii called Ever ybody Vote s. The simple channel only has a few features. Upon launch, it asks the user questions and the user can both vote and predict which choice will win at the end of the poll’s closing time. At the moment, they only have strange questions like “Which century would you prefer to live in?” and “Would you rather live in a house on a mountain or on the beach?” However, I’m just happy to see some form of interaction from the Wii using the internet. Hopefully the question suggestion feature will bring in some better questions in the future.

Google Valentine?s Logo Theories
2007-03-10 16:42:20
There have been some questions pointed at Google about the absence of the “L” in Google from their Valenti ne ’s day logo. After their “official statement,” a few interesting theories have been made. Barnabe Googe was an English poet during the 16th century, well-known for the one line of poetry, “I did but see her passing by, and yet I love her till I die.” Debbie Googe is a former member of the band My Bloody Valentine. Since the L is usually green, the stem could be the L. You can’t spell love without an L — some depressed graphic designers at Google maybe? Google made a mistake and we’re reading too far into it.

Tumblelog craze
2007-03-10 16:42:20
After witnessing the recent tumblelog trend, I’ve decided to take my blogging in a direction that I’ve wanted to for a while now. I’ve stripped down my site and used quite a few homemade WordPress mods to allow myself to post very frequent short links to sites of interest. (Expect a how-to on that soon.) Nothing changes — same RSS address, archives have been carried over, in-depth write-ups will still be written, etc. Simply more content will be posted daily. Since I’ve been wanting to try this for almost a year now, I figured this is a better method than relying on a fly-by-night startup for a separate blog. (These changes may seem sudden, but this has been a side project of mine for a few months.) Feel free to let me know what you think. Since this WordPress solution is mostly homebrew, I’d love to hear any suggestions.
