Gizmo Project Gets an Upgrade

Gizmo Project got a huge upgrade today. Version 3.0 of the popular, cross-platform VoIP client was released, introducing several requested features including tabbed chat, improved group chat, complete chat logging, real-time file sharing and more. Unfortunately, version 3.0 is only available immediately for Windows, but will soon be moved over to OS X and Linux. Until I boot up Parallels to give it a try, I’ve posted the press release below. Today (Tues) SIPphone is announcing the NEW Gizmo Project 3.0 with a press release and I wanted to give you a heads up. Gizmo Project 3.0 has NEW meta-voice capabilities that link together four of the most popular Voice and IM networks with one client for the first time. This means all calls to Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live, Google Talk, Jabber, and Gizmo Project users are free. To make a call, users simply type the username or ID of the person they want to call plus the network domain, for example, username@yahoo.com or username@hotmail....

Google Reader Opens Up & Reports Numbers

Google just started reporting the number of users that are subscribed to each RSS feed through Google Reader which, for most bloggers, was an incredibly large number. With such large number being left out of FeedBurner stats, it was entertaining to see the numbers in a few FeedBurner chicklets literally jump a few thousand over night. Just wanted to say “Thanks, Google!”

dlThis.com: Download Peekvid Content

Now that Peekvid is back, it’s time for FLV junkies to start worrying when it’ll disappear into “closed beta” again. dlThis .com allows you to download videos from Peekvid (actually Dailymotion) and back them up to your hard drive as FLV video files (which can be easily converted). Just tried it and, while it was painfully slow, I was able to download an episode of House with very little effort. (The trick to finding the right URL to give dlThis.com is to show the address bar in your browser for the popup window. The URL will start with http://peekvid.com/video/.)

Google Sketchup: 3D for Everyone

I’ve been playing around with Google Sketch up recently and I have to say it’s oddly addicting. If you haven’t tried it out yet, I highly suggest you install it (Windows and OS X versions available) and check out the quick start video tutorials on Google’s site. Google even has some occasional contests if you really get into it.

Yahoo! Pipes: Friendly Data Manipulation

Pipes is a new Yahoo ! project that allows the Average Joe to aggregate data from feeds and manipulate it through a friendly interface. This simple tool will certainly invite innovative and creative uses of data around the world to do neat things like match Flickr photos with New York Times stories and search eBay with no ads (my favorite so far). The editing interface is full of modules which allow you to import, manipulate, or output data. Arguably the most convenient feature is the ability to clone existing pipes to improve them and make them your own. The entire system and community seem to be progressing nicely, as new modules are being added each week. Can’t wait to see even more mashups come from Yahoo! Pipes — especially ones that can be used by an average internet surfer. I definitely see a lot of potential in Pipes and look forward to making my own.

After a little over a week of “closed beta,” Peek vid seems to have resolved its troubles (probably legal) and has reopened with a refined UI and a nice disclaimer on the bottom: Peekvid does not contain any content on its site, but is merely an index of available links on the Internet. Peekvid is committed to an industry solution that will provide a mechanism to compensate artists that create the work you enjoy watching. Peekvid would like to be part of the long term solution.

Apple Updates iTunes & QuickTime

Apple just released iTunes 7.1 and QuickTime 7.1.5. The iTunes update adds full-screen Cover Flow with support for Apple TV, while QuickTime was updated with simply a few security and bug fixes. (Huge gaps between posts will end soon — just working out some design and functionality changes with WordPress.)

WordPress 2.1.2 was released to patch a huge security hole in 2.1.1 added by a cracker. Definitely upgrade ASAP if you upgraded to 2.1.1.

One of the hardest aspects of designing a site is the placement of non-obtrusive ads. I’ve found that placing ads after the first blog post on the homepage is the most ideal place for ads if you don’t have room on the sidebar. My Gmail account was just updated with the Mail Fetcher feature — a tool that got a lot of publicity a few months ago when only very few users received the functionality. Super Bowl Commercials on AOL

Looks like AOL will be streaming today’s Super Bowl commercials immediately after during the game. Last year, Google Video helped distribute the ads, which proved to be a huge success. Can’t wait to see what the brands came up with this year (especially GoDaddy).

Parallels Desktop for Mac Release Candidate 2 introduces several overdue improvements, including support for USB 2.0 and FAT32 Boot Camp partitions and fixes to the Coherence, drag-and-drop, and Transporter features. But best of all, the Parallels release candidates don’t require a new activation key to unlock all of these new features.

Despite the fact that Firefox and Thunder bird are two of the most powerful apps geeks know of, many Mac users are turned away from Mozilla software due to the lack of the polished Cocoa design. Colored iPod Shuffles Introduced

Apple quietly updated the iPod shuffle with new colors to match the iPod nano (with the addition of orange). Surprisingly, I’ve only seen a few of the new shuffles around school, while I’ve seen several of the newer iPod nanos (received as a gift for the holidays, I’m assuming). I’d be very interested to know how many of the iPods sold are shuffles — from what I’ve seen I’d be surprised if they were even somewhat popular.

Flickr To Begin Forcing Yahoo! Logins

Looks like Yahoo ! has decided to make the Flick r deal official. On March 15, “old skool” Flickr users (including myself) will no longer be able to login with their email addresses. Instead, a Yahoo! login will be required. Not the biggest deal, but some really old skool members are certainly getting worked up. (more…)
