Exclusive Video: Psystar in the Wild [Exclusive]
2008-04-28 06:30:00 newVideo Player("psystarPC_gawker.flv", 463, 387,""); It's alive. Reader Patrick (Whiskeyfrown) is lucky enough to be using one of the few Psystar Open Computing machines that have made it into the wild, and he was generous enough to make a video showing the machine (including the connections in the back to the monitor to show that it's legit). The thing boots up and runs pretty damn fast, says Patrick, but Software Update won't recognize it so you won't be able to patch. System Profiler thinks that it's a Mac Pro. More images coming soon. Creative Zen Getting Bubblegum Pink Makeover [Update]
2008-04-28 05:30:00 Looks like the Zune isn't the only PMP to be getting a color makeover, Creative 's Zen is in on it too. The new model was spotted at Wal Mart, where it is retailing at $69.99 for a 2GB unit, with no other capacities listed. As far as we can tell, the pink Zen is ready for immediate shipping, despite the fact it is not available at Creative's own online store. The new addition has me thinking it is time for a pink gadget in my arsenal; admit it, you want one as well. Piezing Dress Concept Generates Electricity as She Walks [Piezing]
2008-04-28 04:30:00 Oasis were right, she is electric, or at least she would be with the Piezing dress concept, designed by Amanda Parkes. The concept was shown off at the 2nd Skin: Imaginative Designs in Digital & Analog Clothing event in San Francisco, and it uses piezoelectric material around the joints to generate electricity when motion is detected. Unfortunately, the current isn't used instantaneously as some sort of nipple stimulator, instead it is stored in a small, removable battery, which can then be discharged when required. Clothing concepts that double up with unusual functions have been around for a while, but this one seems to be one of the more useful and practical solutions, even if it isn't the epitome of fashion. Rumors swirl of Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic
2008-04-28 04:20:00 Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Details are fuzzy right now -- and what details there are have been officially denied -- but the Japanese press is having a bit of a field day over the possibility of a Sanyo selloff to Matsushita / Panasonic . Apparently Goldman Sachs, Sumitomo, and Daiwa own some 67% of Sanyo's equity, and as Japanese paper Yomiuri reports, are looking at the possibility of transferring said equity to or otherwise forming a partnership with Matsushita. Again, both Matsu and Sanyo are denying the report as of now, so it's all still up in the air as the salarymen figure out whether to combine both companies to make a corporate entity larger than even Hitachi (which currently sits at the top of Japan's heap).[Via Engadget Japanese, thanks Theirry]Read | Permalink 160;| Email this | Comments More About: Rumors , Gizmos
Sirius Starmate 5 stops by FCC, XM gets a mention
2008-04-27 06:01:00 Filed under: Portable Audio We'll cut straight to the chase: on the surface, there's nothing all that enthralling about the Sirius Starmate 5. In most every respect, it looks, smells and likely acts much like its predecessor. Granted, the color schemes have been updated a bit and you'll still find that delicious Sirius Replay support included, but the humdrum 5-line display, obligatory FM transmitter and bundled remote don't do much to get our saliva glands workin' overtime. As Orbitcast points out, however, there is one thing about the FCC filing that piques our interest more than anything else, and it's a simple phrase from a posted correspondence letter: "We used the satellite radio signal coming from either XM or Sirius." Whether or not this actually means anything is yet to be seen, but it makes for some decent fodder at the very least, yeah?[Via Orbitcast]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments More About: Gizmos , Stops
Apple i Keynote Parody is Spot On [Humor]
2008-04-27 05:45:00 College Humor is running a parody of Steve in Keynote mode, we know it isn't the first or won't be the last, but it has some of the Steve's actions, crowd reactions and the overall atmosphere pretty much down to perfection. On top of all that, it does a good job at making us laugh—just look at the damn product description! The sketch even includes a commercial demonstration, and the whole clip is quality through and through. Hit the link for the video and then let us know if you'd be first in line to purchase the i. We definitely would—hey, it's chromy, glassy and shiny. [College Humor] More About: Apple , Parody , Spot

Azoo Eco-Desk Puts a Self-Cleaning Aquarium in Your Desk [Design]
2008-04-27 04:30:00 I'm pretty sure Missy Elliot had something similar to Azoo's Eco-Desk , which has a self-cleaning tropical fish aquarium contained within a glass and aluminum body. Alas, hers was made by Lamborghini, so this is the poor man's / international female hip-hop star's iteration, but it's still a bit of cool for your apartment. The glass top rests on a hinged support, which can be pulled open to allow Nemo to escape back home, or better yet, add some company to the captives inside. The aquarium contains Azoo's solution for biological, water and temperature control, meaning you don't have to worry about anything other than why your Coi Carp look so damn uncomfortable. If you have to ask about pricing, well, you know the deal. We'll pass on this one, we just don't think it is very secure—those two mermaids escaped without even smashing the glass. Ridiculous. Hit the link for some more fishy-fun images. [BornRich] More About: Design , Aquarium , Cleaning
Europe Kicks Off Saturday Night With A Rocket Launch [Rockets]
2008-04-27 03:30:00 Europeans sure know how to celebrate a Saturday night! While I spent the good part of Happy Hour knocking back shots, our cousins from across the ocean shot a satellite up into space. The Giove-B satellite, a demonstrator that will test key technologies needed in satellite navigation systems, ascended to the heavens at 22:16 GMT. The Giove-B is a half-ton, 2.4x1x1 meter box which contains a passive hydrogen maser clock, the most stable clock ever to be shot into permanent orbit. The clock is designed to keep time with an accuracy of better than one nanosecond in 24 hours. If everything goes well and the clock stays ticking, the Giove-B's launch will be a template for about 30 operational platforms necessary to build Europe's Galileo satellite navigation system - one of the continent's key high-tech ventures. Galileo, meant to be complimentary to GPS, will improve the availability and accuracy of timing signals delivered from space. Users will be able to pinpoint positions with... Falcon Northwest?s portable FragBox 8500 gaming rig gets reviewed
2008-04-27 03:14:00 Filed under: Desktops Oh yeah, you've options oozing everywhere for a bona fide gaming desktop that takes up some serious square footage in your domicile, but what about those looking for a potent portable? And we're not talking laptops, either. Falcon Northwest 's FragBox 8500 -- which sports a chassis that hasn't changed much in years -- was recently reviewed by the folks over at PC Magazine, and put simply, it was deemed a "game system without apologies." Checking in at $1,895, critics found the internals to be "neatly put together," the unit as a whole satisfactorily mobile and yes, they confirmed that "you will definitely be able to play the DX10-heavy versions of Crysis and World in Conflict at very decent frame rates." Did you hear that? They said Crysis. Bioplastics: Environmentally Unfriendly, Contributing To The Food Crisis [B
2008-04-27 02:00:00 About those bioplastic bags - you know, the ones you've been using to assuage your eco-conscious guilt - turns out not only are they not as green as you think, they could also be partially responsible for the global food crisis. A worldwide effort by bag-heavy industries to replace petroleum-based plastics with plant-based plastics could actually lead to more environmental problems, according to a study by the Guardian UK. The bags, made from sugarcane, corn or wheat, can increase greenhouse gas emissions because they require higher temperatures to decompose. Even the biodegradable versions don't disintegrate as planned when thrown into the anaerobic environment of a landfill. The lack of oxygen causes the bags to release methane, which is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. They also tend to screw up recycling operations by contaminating the waste stream and making regular recycled plastics unsaleable. Recycling companies would need to invest in extremely expensive equipm... More About: Food , Crisis

Border Patrol?s virtual fence canceled for not being as good as a fence
2008-04-24 07:58:00 Filed under: Misc. GadgetsThe last we heard of DHS's "Project 28" plan to build a 28-mile stretch of virtual fencing along the US / Mexico border in Arizona, it had been postponed until at least 2011 because the towers didn't quite work. Well, it appears that on further review, the system is even more of a total failure, and it's being scrapped entirely: according to Kelly Good , deputy director of the administration's Secure Border Initiative program, Project 28 "hasn't come close" to meeting Border Patrol 's goals. Tests of the virtual fence didn't lead to nearly as many arrests as designers had hoped, and the lag from sensor detection to transmission of an image to border agents was apparently a big part of the problem. Boeing, which won the $860M contract to build the system, is now being told to replace it all with upgraded towers, but there's no word on when that's happening or what it'll cost taxpayers on top of the $20M already paid out. We're expecting trillion-dol... More About: Gizmos , Virtual , Fence

Now the iPhone simulator can render OpenGL ES that "mirror behavior on the iPhone and iPod Touch." The ES in OpenGL ES stands for embedded systems, and is the official graphics API in both Symbian and Android as well. As a side note, Open GL ES 2.0 is also supported by the PS3 as "an official graphics API" according to Wikipedia, in case you're playing the world's nerdiest game of Trivial Pursuit. Datamancer?s Steampunk LCD Monitor is Another Stunner [Beauty]
2008-04-24 05:32:00 Our friend Datamancer, steampunk modder extraordinaire, is at it again. His newest creation is this Steampunk LCD monitor, and it's a doozy. galleryPost('steampunkmonitor', 6, 'Steampunk LCD Monitor '); This is a 22" widescreen LCD that I built to compliment my brass keyboards. The frame is solid 1/4-inch brass that has been sanded and polished to a high shine. The base features a mixture of brass and black marble with a small brass "cord catch" to keep the power and data cords tidy. The monitor was made for an upcoming movie, and after filming is complete he's gonna toss it up on eBay. Even better? He plans to design and create a mouse to complete the set. I can see people lining up to get a matching monitor/keyboard/mouse combo of this quality. We'll, of course, keep you updated. [Datamancer] More About: Beauty , Stunner
Toshiba dreams of 512GB SSDs, invites you to join in
2008-04-24 04:42:00 Filed under: StorageMove over Samsung -- that 256GB SSD you've been touting is now half as cool as it used to be. According to reports stemming from a Japanese seminar which saw Toshiba 's Shozo Saito take the stage, the firm is hoping to flesh out its line of solid state discs within the next few years. More specifically, it's looking to offer drives with as much as 512GB of room, and Mr. Saito himself expects a full quarter of laptops sold in 2011 to come equipped with an SSD. Figure out a way to get those stratospheric prices down, and we doubt it'll take that long.[Via CNET]Read | Permalink ;| Email this | Comments More About: Dreams , Gizmos , Join

Confessions of a Flickr Snoopr (Admit It, You?re One Too) [Flickr]
2008-04-13 17:00:00 My name is Addy and I'm a Flickr holic. I'm a window-licking voyeuse who's been pressing her nose up against the cold glass of the lives of utter strangers, snooping through their photostreams. And if you think I'm weird, take a peep through their curtains. Marvel at Polymorfo Perverso's rather delicious fetish portraits (one caption reads "your neck is so much fun") or Gizmodo's favorite tough man as meat-market mascot. If you're a Flickr snoopr like me, you know the giddy, naughty pleasure of it all. If you're not one, well, here's how to become one in a hurry. The beauty of Flickr is it's serendipity. I found Mr Perverso's oh-so-perverse materials by innocently typing "I love Jesus" into the search box. Usually I'm on the hunt for stuff at work such as "Treo unboxing," "broken iPhone" or "computer dungeon," which gets you some guy's basement server farm, screenshots of PC-based RPGs, and, for some reason, a shot of a dude's first computer, an Atari 800. But "dungeo... More About: Confessions
