My Weekly Rant - Information On Social Networks
2007-03-10 18:08:05 Please allow me to get onto my soapbox again to vent on social networks and privacy. Last night, I was attempting to find some contact information to reach a friend that I used go to school with. I ventured over to Google to perform a routine search to see if I could find anything. Fortunately, I was able to discover what I needed however; there were another hits on the results that came from…you guessed right…SOCIAL NETWORKS. I was able read the current interests, hobbies, home address, and phone numbers for the person that I needed to contact. Again, do I need to remind people that social networks are not the ideal place to share detailed information about yourself. Yes, there are some “password protected” networks however; please bear in mind that in order for these networks to generate revenue from advertisements, they need their content to be indexed by search engines to build traffiic. My Weekly Rant - Social Networks & Information Sharing
2007-03-03 00:05:03 Social networking is white hot on the internet at the present time. News Corp. owns MySpace, Google acquired YouTube and I bet you that within the next few months, a series of new platforms will pop up. I am guilty as charged. I am a member of a couple of networks and I am amazed how open some people are with sharing information. You could practical know what someone ate for dinner last Christmas or what the people are thinking during their popular television show. I know that the beauty of the Web 2.0 allows individuals to express themselves and share with others but there has to be a balance between sharing information freely and privacy. Any piece of information that is available online can put together to learn about more an individual. Warning: If you are a part of a social network, be careful on how you complete your profile and what is written on your page by others. Your page maybe divulging too much information about you without you knowing it. More About: Social , Information , Social Networks , Networks , Work

My Weekly Rant - Blogs As News Sources
More articles from this author:2007-03-03 00:05:03 Something has been bothering me for months and it is time for me to vent. Blog s that do not have any affiliations to news sources are slowly becoming news outlets for broadcasters. The old lead-in, “According to a blog” is being used to often these days and it must stop, NOW! Granted, blogs are great to share information but remember they are platforms for people to express themselves and views, such as myself and this blog. Using blogs to collect, synthesize and broadcast news is a very risky business. Remember content on blogs can be easily modified within seconds, content that is already used in broadcasts can’t. Users of broadcast news make decisions on the basis of what is available and may not question the validity of the content. More About: News , Source , Rant 1, 2, 3, 4 |
