Dick (1080i)
2007-02-20 05:33:02
Dick (IMDb) (Binsearch collection & NFO) I am not sure why this movie did not get more attention than it did but it should have. This movie is very well written, well acted, and funny as hell. Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams are just too cute and do a great job going through this satirical adventure as hapless, dimwitted, and pretty much clueless teenagers. At 17.55mbps the 1080i transfer is pretty much flawless and although you have 5.1 audio there is not much use for it but its still welcomed. Here’s the main data info: File Size Processed: 12.17 GB, Play Time: 01h:34m:34s 1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps, 17.59 Mbps (17.55 Mbps Average). Average Video Quality: 71.50 KB/Frame, 0.28 Bits/Pixel. AC3 Audio: 3/2 Channels (L, C, R, SL, SR) + LFE, 48.0 kHz, 384 kbps. Dialog Normalization: -31.0 dB, Center Mix Level: -3.0 dB, Surround Mix Level: -3.0 dB 0 of 170074 video frames found with errors. 0 of 177337 audio frames found with errors. 0 corrupted video bytes in file. 0.000000 s...

Promotion, promoting, exposure, and spiders.
2007-02-11 11:30:05
I decided today to sit down and star promoting this blog. You will notice all the new buttons towards the bottom of the right sidebar. Interesting concept this blog promoting is. I can see how this can turn into a very long process getting the right exposure and putting the blog on as many web/blog searches as possible. It will be interesting to see how much the traffic will increase in the next few weeks and if new people will stop by and leave some comments. I think I will go now and watch a couple of good HDTV movies. Maybe all three King Kong movies; 1933, 1976, and 2005. A good contrast of film making spanning over 70 years.

I hate Spammers. With a passion.
2007-02-10 23:29:04
There should be a special place in hell for spammers. Somewhere between used car salesman and divorce lawyers. Not only are spammers the spawn of Satan but their evil blog-spam-bots are even worse. I have spent most of the weekend deleting spam-bot comments from the blog. Wordpress is not the best at keeping them out. There are other methods that you can install to help but they don’t seem to stop the more sophisticated bots. So I decided to do away from the blog comments and go to a forum based discussion system where you have to register with a real email address and have to manually verify yourself. This should keep 99% of the spam out and I can dedicate my time to other more productive things. The discussions will be kept here (forum deleted - See this post.) and you can add (reply) to each comment like a regular forum. I have disabled the “New Posting” to regular users so no one can create new threads. But you can still reply to the ones made by me. I am worki...

Federal Judge tells DirecTV to pull HDTV ads.
2007-02-10 23:29:04
Who says these judges don’t know what they are talking about? According to Swanni (TVPredictions.com), U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain told DirecTV that they have not proven that their HD service is better than cable. Did it take a law degree to figure that out? DirecTV is the by far the worst in terms of quality and at the very bottom of the totem pole of anything that has to do with HD service. Some highlights from the article: The commercials, which star Jessica Simpson and William Shatner, sparked a lawsuit by Time Warner Cable which charged that DIRECTV made a false claim by saying its HD picture and service was superior to cable. A DIRECTV spokesman told the Associated Press late Monday that the judge’s ruling only means that the HDTV ads cannot air in Time Warner markets. But it seems that DirecTV does not get the point: ?However, we will continue to aggressively market our better ...

Digital Video Essential HD DVD coming soon.
2007-02-10 23:29:04
The folks over at Video Esse ntials.com have announced that the final street date for the HD DVD version of Digital Video Essential will be Feb 27 (2007). If you really want to calibrate your HD set to almost perfection then you really need to get this disc. The D-Theater 1080i version is by far the best calibration tool you can get short of a full ISF calibration so the HD DVD will be a pleasure to have since most of you probably don’t even know what D-Theater is, let alone own a D-VHS deck (talk about a dying format).

Super Bowl XLI - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
2007-02-10 23:29:04
CBS spent a lot of money, time, and manpower promoting this Super Bowl as an HD centerpiece. As reported earlier CBS really wanted to show what it could do with a complete, almost 100%, HD game. So how did they do? Here’s my rundown on the Good , the Bad, and the right down Ugly : The Good: Almost no SD cameras. When it looked good, it looked real good. More different camera angles (almost all in HD) that I have vere seen in any game. I got lucky with one of the few remaining CBS affiliates with no multicasting so I got a clean 18.7mbps broadcast. Some of CBS’ on field graphics were really cool. The halftime show actually looked pretty good and sounded OK until Prince’s guitar quit working just about 30 seconds before the end. Too funny. HD commercials looked great. The Bad: The weather played havoc on the PQ (picture quality) for the majority of the game. CBS really did not plan for such a down pur as most of their camera lenses were either covered in water or th...

15mbps for HD VOB - CableLabs
2007-02-10 23:29:04
You may think that 15mbps may not seem that high for VOD HD considering that mpeg2 ATSC can handle up to 19.3mbps but the newer generation encoders are putting out exceptional quality at the 15mbps range. Full story (CED Magazine) and some highlights: Trying to find the balance between efficiency and quality is a key challenge faced by operators as they continue to rollout and expand high-definition VOD services. It appears that 15 Mbps is that sweet spot for HD-VOD content (movies, ads, etc.) delivered in a constant bit rate, MPEG-2-based stream, according to the recent release of some new “safe harbor” specs from Cable Labs . Applying the safe harbor tag gives VOD content aggregators and operators a bar to meet, but doesn’t set that bar in concrete. Although expressing concerns and constraints in determining the “optimal” bit rate for a given situation (ie. a show with talking heads, versus a fast-moving sports event), “success has been widely ach...
Canon 2nd Gen HV20 1080i cam announced
2007-02-10 23:29:04
This may well be my next camcorder unless something better comes along before then. Around $1200 and estimated street date of summer 2007. Some tidbits and info from the Cano n site: The HV20 comes with an outstanding High Definition video lens — a 10x Genuine Canon Optical zoom. The HV20 is one of the first Canon camcorders to feature a Canon designed and manufactured CMOS image sensor. The CMOS image sensors in Canon’s EOS Series Digital SLR cameras result in outstanding digital photographs. In the HV20, the CMOS sensor reproduces high-resolution images at 1920 x 1080 resolution with full HD information in video images. Compared to a CCD, the HV20’s CMOS’s high color resolution and advanced color reproduction gives brilliant results. It is also unique in featuring Canon’s proprietary noise reduction technologies for crisp, sharp images. Low noise technology also means that even in dimly lit scenes, the signal from each pixel is as pure as possible, wi...

Ice Age 2: First Blu-ray Movie Leaked Onto BitTorrent
2007-02-10 23:29:04
I told ya that I was working on a breaking news story. Just a few minutes ago, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (IMDb link) became the first Blu-ray movie posted to a BitTorrent tracker. HDBits.org once again leads the way by being the first tracker to release a full Blu-ray rip. The file is a whopping 22GB so it should be a while before it is seeded. Like HD DVD, it will be a few days before several other titles make their way out.

HDTV on Usenet
2007-02-10 23:29:04
“The first rule of Usenet is that you don’t talk about Usenet” “Hell, there are no rules here, we are trying to accomplish something.” - Thomas Alva Edison “Young men know the rules, but old men know the exceptions.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes If you are already familiar with Usenet then you can skip this article. For those that have never heard of it or are not very familiar then you may want to read on. I like to single out BitTorrents (p2p) but what if I told that of a 30 year old technology that today can be used to find almost an unlimited amount of almost anything; pictures, e-books, music, videos, movies, etc, etc, etc. Welcome to Usenet. Instead of going into the whole history I will summarize it by saying that it was created in 1979 by two Duke University students as a small communication network between a few universities in the United States used to trade information, news, and research results. Over the next 30 years it grew to the ...

I hate Spammers - Part Deux!
2007-02-10 23:29:04
Like I wrote on this post, I tried to see if a forum based system would help with the incredible amount of spam comments I was getting. It worked pretty good to stop the spammers but it also slowed down the comments by regular people. I guess the whole registration process does put off a lot of people. So I am back to the regular comment system but have added several forms of Spam protection to help me weed out the hundreds of automated spam bots that seem to have infected the whole blogging community.
