205 inches? Freud was right all along.
2007-03-16 00:00:00
Come on. Is this really necessary? Nothing this big needs to be outside a commercial theater. Sometimes the “my-dick-is-bigger-than-yours” ; is a little out of hand. Of course, no actual details or price have been announced. From TecnoVISION site: (bad english not my fault) TECNOVISION has launched into the market in world preview Luxio (Led 205″): ...

I guess not?
2007-03-16 00:00:00
Two months ago I asked this question. I guess the Blu-ray disc association answered me with a resounding “Hell no!” From my buddies at AppleInsider: The Blu-ray disc association said Thursday that it’s aiming to replace the traditional DVD storage format within the next three years. “Within three years it will just be Blu-ray,” said Frank Simonis, ...

HD DVD/Blu-ray rips: Not ready for primetime?
2007-03-16 00:00:00
With nearly 100 HD DVD/Blu-ray rips out and about it seems to remind me of the early days of DVD ripping where it was hard to get them to work on various software packages. Most of the early DVD rips failed misearably and of course the menus never worked the way they did on you ...

Slow HD news week? Blame PMA

Could not figure out why there was not a single major, or even minor, announcement this past week. Usually someone has some sort of new product or announcement each week. Well, HDTV Blogger forgot to check his calendar as yesterday the PMA (Photography Marketing Association) ended their yearly conference and every single manufacturer was there showing ...

Thinking about changing Wordpress theme
2007-03-08 05:54:01
It turns out that this Word press theme is buggy as hell and its giving me all sorts of problems.  I was thinking of maybe going with Redoable 1.1 since its very customizable and from what I read on various reviews, mostly bug free. Are there any themes out there that you like?

HiDef is so yesterday
2007-03-08 05:54:01
I guess people like to put the term HiDef or high definition on pretty much evertyhing these days. Check out these examples from CNet: The term “high definition,” most commonly used in consumer electronics to describe higher-resolution TV and video formats, has become a marketing catchphrase for everything from mascara to fireplace logs. The following are some of the non-techie products you can get in HD.

South Park in HD - and free!!!
2007-03-08 05:54:01
All I can say is “Sweeeeeet!!!” From Joystiq: This coming Tuesday is a big day for people that are both fans of South Park and Xbox 360 owners. Comedy Central is releasing the first ever high definition episode of South Park on the Xbox Live Marketplace to all members (we’re assuming this means Silver and Gold) for free. That’s right, everyone’s favorite word — free. It will be on Marketplace at that low, low, price of free for two weeks, and will also be available as a free HD-DVD to people buying a new Xbox 360 console or the HD-DVD add-on drive at Best Buy from March 20th through April 3rd. The episode is a couple of years old, but it is definitely a fan fave. It’s ‘Good Times With Weapons’ from the 2004 season … better known as the “South Park Ninjas episode. The style changes from the traditional cutout look into anime style pictured above, and it will look, er … extra-animated in HD. Couple this with the f...

Underworld: Evolution Blu-ray
2007-02-28 11:48:01
Underworld: Evolution (IMDb) (Yabse collection) Have not seen this (yet) so I am going to quote one of the reviews on IMDb: Enjoyable But Not Too Good Overall, 6 February 2006 Author: APoL CoLD from United States To start off, let me say that I’m a very big fan of the original. I think it did everything right; having a nice Gothic overtone, great characters, an original, intriguing and in-depth plot, fun action and an overall script that never once felt dull. Oh, and of course…it had Kate Beckinsale in tight leather, hehehe. Now does this sequel contain all these qualities that made the original so good? Personally, I’d have to say no, I don’t think it did. Was the movie necessarily bad? Also no. It was highly entertaining but not that good of a movie overall. STORYLINE: The story in this film was no where near as good or developed as the original. As it starts off with a war scene in the past, I found myself really enjoying it. We find out a little about t...

Sahara HD DVD
2007-02-26 17:45:02
Sahara (IMDb) (Yabse collection) I cannot believe I am going to admit this but I have watched this movie over 30 times. There is something about the soundtrack and cinematography that I really enjoy. Having Penelope Cruz in the flick does not hurt either. This is the kind of movie that you must forgo all sense of reality and enjoy the silly fun.

What is the difference between 720p & 1080i? Take a look.
2007-02-25 11:42:01
I found this the other day and I thought it was so cool I thought I would share. If you have ever wanted to know how the same show would look in both 720p and in 1080i and what the difference would be, here is the perfect example. As some of you may know, ABC’s Lost is being shown on the other side of the pond (in the UK) at a native 1080i while we get it in 720p. Since Lost is filmed in 35mm the 1080i should look awesome. I have never seen the difference since I live on the far left coast and my small satelite can’t reach the Sky-HD bird. But I found a link that has photo evidence of how superior the 1080i version is comapred to the 720p version. Click here and wait for the image to load (its big) and then mouse over and out to see the difference. Pretty obvious isn’t it?

The New World (1080i)
2007-02-25 11:42:01
The New World (IMDb) (Binsearch collection) How can such a beautifully filmed movie have such a lousy linear plot and horrible acting? I cannot see Colin Farrell acting his way out of a wet paper bag. Watching him in this is like an extended cut of Alexander. As a matter of fact, other than the change of continent, hundreds of years difference, and the fact that he sleeps with a teenager instead of his General, you have pretty much the same character.

Gladiator BEV (1080i)
2007-02-20 17:34:01
Gladiator (IMDb) (Binsearch collection #1 & collection #2) This is it!!! This is the holy grail of reference quality for 1080i broadcast. This is from a time when broadcasters did not starve bitrates and let their 1080i feeds travel out at full 19.3mbps. If you have not seen this then you have not seen what true full bitrate HD can really look like. Trust me, this thing is absolutely breath taking. You HD collection is not complete unless you have this. It seems that it just started so give it some time to complete. The file is something like 20GB so make sure you have lots of room.

D-Link DSM-750 High Definition Draft-N Media Player
2007-02-20 05:33:02
“Someone” mentioned the D-Link Media Lounge when I wrote about the Netgear EVA8000. I had completely forgotten about this product since D-Link has been rather quiet about it. They mentioned it in a press release during CES but they have not made much noise about it since. Well, it seems that D-Link has some more information about the new MediaLounge DSM-750 High Definition Draft-N Media Play er (now that is a mouthful) on their web site. Here’s their info on the DSM-750: Product Description: D-Link announced its next generation MediaLounge? Sharp Introduces the BD-HP1 Blu-ray Disc Recorder
2007-02-20 05:33:02
Not quite sure what to make of this as the really imporant details seem to be missing. Sure, it can play retail Blu-ray discs and it can record HDTV onto Blu-ray recordable discs via iLink (1394/Firewire). Sure, the $1,200 price is very appealing as it is just a little more than just a Blu-ray player. But the major detail that is missing and there is no mention of it on the Sharp press release is this: Is this thing 5c compliant so those of us that have copy-once content providers are able to record? I highly doubt it. If it is not 5c compliant then this thing is no better than buying a cheap PCI or USB HDTV tuner for your PC and using that and therefore saving hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Either way, here are some of the details from Sharp: Product name Blu-ray Disc Player Model name BD-HP1 Suggested retail price Open Date of introduction March 20, 2007 Monthly production 3,000 units Major Features Hybrid Record ing function allows recording of high-definition pr...

Processing Keys found for HD DVD & Blu-ray - What does that mean?
2007-02-20 05:33:02
Two days ago, arnezami over at Doom9.org discovered the processing keys used on both HD DVD and Blu-ray. See this thread (Doom9). What exactly does this mean? In a nutshell, this key could be used to decrypt every single HD DVD and Blu-ray on the market today. Not only that, but there is chance (although very slight) that this key may not be revocable. This news has been floating about for two days now on several sites but I wanted to wait for additional information and possibly an explanation to help the process for us mere mortals. It now looks like arnezami is working on something. From arnezami (about an hour ago): i’m working on something. Please have patience. I need to take time to put it all together and make it comprehensible for everyone (given my available time this could take a couple of days). You’ve got pretty much everything right. The role of the Processing Key will be explained

Netgear EVA8000 Digital Entertainer HD
2007-02-20 05:33:02
A month ago I posted about EVA8000 media player from Netgear and they have recently updated their website with added information, including the user’s manual. I am sure that this thing will have absolutely no problems with any bitrate mpeg2 HD files that you throw at it. But I am dying to find out if it will handle full bitrate 1080i or 1080p H.264 files. Up to a few days ago the webiste listed the MSRP at $349 and a street date of early March but those have been removed. I would love to get my hands on one of these and put it through some real world torture tests. Maybe Netgear will be so kind as to send me one to test and review. I wish!!!! Here are the specs from Netgear: ? Not only that but you get the beautiful OAR 2.35:1 scope to boot. If you have not played full bitrate H.264 before, you will need a pretty fast CPU (Core 2 Duo or faster) and a good graphics card.
