2007-02-25 15:24:02 This undated micrograph, released by Yoshiaki Ohashi laboratory of the Institute for Advanced Bioscience from Keio University in Japan, shows Bacillus subtilis bacteria, which has digital data embedded in its DNA. Ohashi?s research team said it had developed a technology for storing digital data in the DNA of bacteriaTokyo: For people who want to ensure their words last for future generations, Japanese scientists have found a way to literally put a message into genes.A research team at Keio University in Tokyo said this week it had developed a technology for storing digital data in the DNA of bacteria, which unlike most living organisms can survive for millennia in the right conditions. The researchers encoded Einstein ?s most famous equation, E=MC^2, and his most prolific year, 1905, into the genome of one the toughest strains of bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, also known as hay bacillus. The characters were then read from the bacterium at a later date by analysing its genetic sequence.A... Scanner to see through clothes at US Airport
2007-02-25 15:24:02 A scanner capable of seeing through clothing went into use at a US airport on Friday in the first test of whether the revealing technology should become a routine part of passenger screening. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) installed a "backscatter imaging" X-ray machine the size of a huge armoire at a security checkpoint at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona. The first volunteer for scanning was a Vietnam War veteran traveling with his wife for a 40th wedding anniversary trip. "He didn't have any problem with it whatsoever," said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Nico Melendez. During the imaging process, light gray silhouettes produced by scans appear on computer screens in a secure room a short distance away, according to Melendez. Male TSA agents check scans of male passengers and female agents review images of women. "We are absolutely not able to see you naked," Melendez said. "It is more of a chalk outline. ... RFID powder that stores digital data
2007-02-25 15:24:02 Tokyo: Tiny computer chips used for tracking food, tickets and other items are getting even smaller. Hitachi Ltd, a Japanese electronics maker, recently showed off radio frequency identification, or RFID, chips that are just 0.002 inches by 0.002 inches and look like bits of powder. They?re thin enough to be embedded in a piece of paper, company spokesman Masayuki Takeuchi said Thursday.RFID tags store data, but they need to be brought near special reading devices that beam energy to the chips, which then send information back to the readers. The technology is already widely used to track and identify items, such as monitoring the distribution of food products or guarding against forgery of concert tickets.Shown to the public for the first time earlier this month, the new chip is an improvement on its predecessor from Hitachi ? the Mu-chip, which at 0.4 millimetres by 0.4 millimetres, looks about the size of the full stop at the end of this sentence. The latest chip, which still has n... Google shuts hole in desktop product
2007-02-23 09:22:02 Boston: A potentially devastating hole in Google ?s prevalent desktop search product could have exposed personal files on users? computers to data thieves. Google fixed the defect within weeks of being informed about it and says it has no evidence the vulnerability was exploited. The flaw was uncovered late last year by Watchfire Corp, a security-analysis provider. Now, while this sort of vulnerability exists in roughly 80 per cent of Web applications, this problem appeared far more extreme ?given the sensitive nature of what Google Desk top is doing,? said Danny Allan, a researcher at US-based Watchfire.Google?s free desktop product, first released in 2004, has millions of users. The service offers a fast, easy way to find documents, e-mails, instant-messaging transcripts, archived Web pages, etc that are stored on PCs. LCD display with ethernet interface
2007-02-23 09:22:02 Guido writes -Originally I wanted to write the next article about a weather station based on the avr web server. Based on a request from a customer I decided then to develop this circuit first. The weather station comes next. There are a number of interesting aspects/problems here which could also be useful for developing other circuits. Most LCD displays want 5V. The avr web server uses 3.3VThe simple "switch on/off a relay" circuit which was the only function provided by the avr web server until now did not require HTML-forms. I used simply 2 URLs http://baseurl/password/1 for switching on and http://baseurl/password/0 for switching off. This does not work anymore for the display as we want to type a text into a web page which should then be shown on the display. What is needed is a needed is a proper decoding of HTML form data. Apple, Cisco settle iPhone trademark lawsuit
2007-02-23 09:22:02 Cisco Systems and Apple said Wednesday they have settled the trademark-infringement lawsuit over the use of the iPhone name for Apple's new multimedia phone. The agreement allows Apple and Cisco to use the iPhone brand on their own products. Also, the companies said that they would explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, consumer and business communications. The brief announcement made no reference to any financial agreement or specified how the two companies might work together. Representatives for Apple and Cisco declined to comment further, citing confidentiality restrictions. Cisco sued Apple for trademark infringement in January after Apple unveiled its long-awaited multimedia phone called the iPhone, a name claimed by the network equipment maker. Cisco also charged in its complaint that Apple had attempted to get rights to the iPhone name several times, but after Cisco refused, the company created a front company to try to acquire the rights anoth... Prevent your laptop from thefts
2007-02-21 15:19:01 Any law enforcement official can tell you that a few extra steps of caution can avoid a disastrous theft. Thieves enjoy convenience just as any shopper does; if your laptop is more difficult to pinch than the next guy's, it's the next guy who loses.Mark your laptopMarking your laptop helps with the recovery of a stolen (or lost) laptop. Either engrave your information onto your laptop or use a tamper-resistant asset tag. After all, the best proof that something is yours is your name right there on the stolen item. You can use an engraving tool to literally carve your name and contact information on your laptop. Some clever folks merely write their names inside the laptop, either on the back of some removable door, inside the battery compartment, or other places a thief probably wouldn't think to check. Use a Sharpie or other indelible marker. You can get asset tags from most print shops. The tags peel and stick like any sticker, but you can't easily remove or damage them.Don't use... Google to Create Artificial Intelligence

Could Electronic Arts Buy 2K Sports ??
2007-02-20 09:16:01 Electronic Arts would be wise to buy 2K Sport s , or so says industry analyst Michael Pachter for Wedbush Morgan Securities. The suggestion came amid the move from Wedbush downgrading Take-Two Interactive's stock from ?hold? to ?sell? Friday. Take-Two Interactive owns 2K Sports as a subsiderary.?It is clear to us that Take-Two?s sports business would have tremendous value to EA, as it would give EA a monopoly on football, basketball, baseball, and hockey,? Pachter said. His analysis concluded that EA might purchase 2K Sports for as much as $200 million dollars, but he noted, ?It is arguable that EA would benefit by as much as $1 billion if it were to obtain an exclusive; this does not mean that it is willing to pay $1 billion.?The acquisition would no doubt be controversial, as EA Sports games are seen by many consumers as inferior to their 2K Sports competitors. EA has responded to this by securing exclusive rights to the names and players of several sports leagues.Sports games have... More About: Electronic , Electronic Arts

The Intel Power Workhouse .... Stunning
2007-02-20 09:16:01 San Jose: The world?s biggest chipmaker said Sunday it developed a programmable processor that can perform about a trillion calculations per second, or deliver a performance of 1.01 teraflops. It accomplishes this feat while consuming 62 watts of power when the chip is running at a frequency of 3.16 gigahertz.A similarly powerful supercomputer in 1996 at Sandia National Laboratories took up more than 2,000 square feet, used nearly 10,000 Pentium Pro processors, and consumed more than 500 kilowatts of electricity.Intel ?s latest chip is still in the research phase, but it marks an important breakthrough for an industry obsessed with obtaining the highest amount of performance for the lowest energy consumption.Just last month, Intel and IBM separately announced they had devised ways to replace problematic but vital materials in the transistors of computer chips that have begun leaking too much electric current as the circuitry on those chips gets smaller.Executives at Santa Clara-base...
