Hard Disk Test Surprises Google
2007-02-20 09:16:01 The impact of heavy use and high temperatures on hard disk drive failure may be overstated, says a report by three Google engineers. The report examined 100,000 commercial hard drives, ranging from 80GB to 400GB in capacity, used at Google since 2001. The firm uses "off-the-shelf" drives to store cached web pages and services. "Our data indicate a much weaker correlation between utilisation levels and failures than previous work has suggested," the authors noted. A wide variety of manufacturers and models were included in the report, but a breakdown was not provided. Widely-held belief There is a widely held belief that hard disks which are subject to heavy use are more likely to fail than those used intermittently. It was also thought that hard drives preferred cool temperatures to hotter environments. The authors wrote: "We expected to notice a very strong and consistent correlation between high utilisation and higher failure rates. "However our results appear to paint a m... New Evidence of Water Found on Mars
2007-02-17 21:12:01 Todays Technology world has reached horizons...Researches done by scientists are truly appreciable.....Check this out:New images of a fissure-filled canyon on Mars provide evidence of long-term underground water flows that may have provided a suitable environment for microbial life, scientists reported in a paper published in the journal Science.?If there are any sort of fossils, these would be good places to look,? said lead author, Chris Okubo, from the University of Arizona, USA.Image shows colourful rock layers in a small valley on Mars. The valley belongs to the Martian Mawrth Vallis channel system, which holds special interest to scientists because of the presence of clay-like minerals, which probably formed in the presence of waterWhile previous NASA probes have found evidence of water on Mars, scientists previously had few clues if the water existed long enough for life to evolve. The new findings show light-coloured features cutting across dark bands in an area known as Cand... 2007-02-17 09:11:02 Forget the Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, if you?ve got some extra dough ? and quite a lot of it ? may be you?d want to get your hands on a personal submarine... Some men hit the town?s hotspots. Others prefer an evening in front of the telly watching sports. Small change, no doubt, for the person who has everything and still wants more.It provides all the excitement of scuba diving without leaving the comfort of an air-conditioned cabin. Those who have taken the controls liken the experience to ?flying through water?.The first mass-produced commercially available submarine, the C-Quester, comes from a company calling itself UBoat Worx, with apparently no concerns about associations with the German wartime submarines. It is designed and produced in Holland. The sub, which weighs up to 1.8-tons, can be launched from a yacht or ...
The Mind Reader
2007-02-17 09:11:02 It is the stuff of science fiction ? a device capable of reading minds and revealing our innermost thoughts. Now, that fiction has moved a significant step towards reality.Using sophisticated scanners and computer programs, scientists have worked out how the brain lights up when making different plans ? a breakthrough that effectively allows the reading of minds.?Until now, no one has been able to show whether it might be possible to read an individual?s intentions from their brain activity,? said Professor John-Dylan Haynes, who started the research while working at University College London. ?We wanted to know if you could read intentions while they were still covert ? known only to the subject.?To find out, the scientists asked a group of volunteers to prepare to do some mental arithmetic. The eight men and women were told to choose to perform an addition or subtraction ? but not to tell the scientists their choice. While they were thinking about whether to add or subtract, but ha... Air Conditioners make cities hot
2007-02-17 09:11:02 The use of air conditioners to cool the inside of buildings can make cities hotter, said researchers who studied the summer temperatures of a Japanese city.Yukitaka Ohashi of the Okayama University of Science and colleagues compared the summer temperatures in Tokyo on weekends versus weekdays. Their study showed that air conditioners dump enough heat into the streets to raise the temperature at least one to two degrees Celsius.Air conditioners remove not only ambient heat from buildings, but they expel heat from their use of electricity. In other words, coolers don?t just move heat from the inside to the outdoors, they also add new heat just by being machines that consume power, the report said.To accurately predict the air temperature in any big city, meteorologists need to better understand exactly how big buildings are expelling heat, the study suggests.US-based urban heat researcher Stuart Gaffin of the Centre for Climate Systems Research at Columbia University in New York suspec... Turn Trash Into Electricity
2007-02-17 09:11:02 Purdue professor Nathan Mosier works with the tactical biorefinery, designed to convert waste into electricity in disaster or crisis locations where people are stranded without powerA group of scientists have created a portable refinery that efficiently converts food, paper and plastic trash into electricity. The machine, designed for the US military, would allow soldiers to convert waste into power and could have widespread civilian applications in the future.?This is a very promising technology,? said project leader Michael Ladisch, a professor of agricultural and biological engineering at the US-based Purdue University. ?In a very short time it should be ready for use in the military, and I think it could be used outside the military shortly thereafter.?The ?tactical biorefinery? processes several kinds of waste at once, which it converts into fuel via two parallel processes. The system then burns the different fuels in a diesel engine to power a generator. Ladisch said the machi... More About: Electricity , City , Tricity , Electric , Turn
