So much for my xHTML recommendation
2007-07-24 05:45:00 I've always told my friend (who runs a New Media firm) to get his designer to create valid xHTML pages instead of using the default standard HTML 4.01 spec for their websites. I've cited a number of reasons to support this. One of the most important being is that xHTML is better served to mobile devices as the xHTML Mobile-Profile spec conforms to the xHTML 1.1 standard. And if a page is a valid xHTML, some device-readers could 'read out' the webpage to blind people.xHTML 1.1 pages must be served application/xhtml+xml MIME type which IE and some other browsers doesn't support. On the other hand, xHTML 1.0 (whatever DOCTYPE it may be - Strict, Transitional, Frameset) can be served as text/html if it follows the xHTML 1.0 spec guidelines - but even then its not considered to be valid xHTML ! Anyway, that's the summary of a long story. So much for xHTML that, at the time I created all my pages xHTML 1.1 but never served it from the server as xHTML 1.1 (tag-soup). I even started t... What to look for when looking for a new shared host
2007-07-23 21:31:00 There is a multitude of web-pages on the Internet related to web-hosting in specific. There are umpteen number of questions, opinions and reviews on web-hosting companies and its various issues. It is impossible to come up with a definite answer - only experience can tell what & which one is best for you. The criteria is mainly based on what audience base your website is targeted at. I cannot possibly make a post on comparison between web-hosting companies. This is one subject that can really drown you - get involved in WebHost ingTalk if you're really interested. When I'm looking for a linux shared-hosting solution for a future non-static website that I intend on developing, there are a couple of points I look out for when browsing through the package-plans' features : PHP 5.2.x - PHP4 is on its way out - on 13th July 2007, php.net officially announced the PHP 4 end of life announcement. With PHP 6 on the way, its high time new php-projects are written in PHP 5. Moreover, w...

Tata reveals 1 lakh rupees car ?
2007-06-30 20:39:00 Somewhere in 2006 word spread that in 2007, Tata would reveal its Rs 1 lakh car. This car is speculated to be the result of major traffic jams in the city, now that a car which an average salaried Indian citizen can now afford, is going to be released. Now it seems it'll be out in 2008. Since I could not find any official source to cite this post, I decided to wait on this until there is a word from Tata. But recently on CNN, when it mentioned "...a $3000 car has been launched in India...", I thought it was pretty much out of the bag. $3000 is currently approx Rs 1,22,249 - the 20k difference must be in taxes etc Will we be witnessing chaos on the roads within the 2 years ? It'll be like a swarm of these kinda mini-cars on every street ! Will the The National Highways Authority of India accelerate their highway constructions ? [ Unbiased answer : No ] Will Tata actually run out of stock or have orders that are in a 5 year waiting list because of its affordability ? Will the co...

Pi to a Million Places
2007-06-29 19:43:00 There are people who'll pay up tons for a nice short non-trade-marked domain name. Most people are under the impression that a very short domain name will fetch better results on a visitor stand-point-of-view.But these days, this is not necessarily true since there are so many million worth visiting websites that it would impossible to remember the name of the website even if its based on a commonly used word. Thats the reason why social bookmarking sites are on the rise. Plus, with bookmarking features that have improved rapidly like synchronizing between FireFox's and Google's bookmarks, users have only become lazier to use the keyboard even if its a.com. And if they did use the keyboard, they'll do a search for the exact domain name and then click on the exact url link in the SERP - which they already 'unconsciencely' know ! This is very evident from the AOL data leak on August 4th, 2006 - for those of you who know what I'm talking about - others, do a simple search and yo... More About: Fun , Places , Million

Local Alert: Burrp Mumbai User Emails Leaked
2007-06-25 15:31:00 I was shocked when I saw the newsletter email from Burrp.com, titled Local SMS Alert s from burrp.com. Instead of sending it one at time to each individual, they CC'd it everyone in the group ! This leak could've been goldmine for spammers and other internet marketeers ! could've been did I say ? I was further shocked to learn that there are only about 450 users registered under Burrp Mumbai ! Burrp is currently all about a local search for restaurants, bars, nightlife, street food, juice centres, desserts, bakeries etc - which is what this very city is built upon. The reason why this 'seems' so overly-crowded is because of the excess fat in most of the Mumbaikars (no offence, just a view). They're soon on the way to becoming Indian version of citysearch.com, listing Cinemas, Theater & Dance, Museums, Art Galleries, Spas, Salons, Gymnasiums and Book Stores. Food and drinks being the backbone of this city, a potential site like burrp.com could've done much better marketing... More About: User , Emails

Started as a reseller service, lovers John Naruszewicz and Kevin Medina got their company its own accredited registrar status in 2006. And now, in less than a year's time, they've lost the status in March 2007. There was a bit of a chaos as it was rumored that Now, the customers' domains are being transferred to GoDaddy.Theres a blog dedicated to Register Fly : RegisterFlies Mails from RegistryFly and DirectI are the only ones I had to set filters to move them to my thrash folder - so far !Almost 4 yrs ago, I had signed up for DirectI's hosting service and while it was in trial period for 3 days, I decided not to go with them and choose another hosting solution, as hosting in India is still pretty expen... Hardware Fortnightmare
2007-06-13 04:00:00 The last couple of weeks have been hectic. MY 1.5yr old HP DVD-Writer is no longer burning CDs/DVDs properly. Nero keeps giving the error message Burn Process Failed at nx. The exact message error is Cannot Perform End-of-Disk-at-once. After wasting almost 15 HP DVDs trying to figure out the damn problem, I called HP service center to resolve the issue as its no longer under warranty. When they took the writer to their office for testing, they reported no such burning issue on their side after writing 6 CDs and 2 DVDs. I am truly running out of luck with this one, unable to find the fault on my PC - reinstalled Nero, updated the firmware etc. Even tried disabling the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. Man I wish I knew a hardware geek around. I'm going to keep the writer incase I do come across someone who can really look into it later. I've decided to get Sony's external sleek USB 2.0 driven model DRX-S50U dvd-burner. Sony has always been steady on external media sto... More About: Hardware , Hardwar

4GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive
2007-05-09 14:33:00 On May 1st, I ordered a 4GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4GB USB Pen Drive for Rs 1900 from Sify Shopping and I was expecting the delivery to be real soon as I'm currently residing in Mumbai city - the city where shopping is the prime business. Yet, even the 3-5 days delivery time wasn't promised. I received the pen drive today on May 9th !Anyway, this is pretty good deal for a 4GB capacity. I've decided to use this to store the data in My Documents > My Pictures. My Pictures is now linked to F:. Problem is that it may not persist as F: if/when more USB devices are added/removed after restarting the PC. Looking out for a way to map a folder to the device id instead, if thats any way possible - or something similar. If such a thing is possible, then it would be great to finally have many 10GB USB pen drives attached with each mapped to My Pictures, My Music etc etc. More About: Flash , Gadgets , Flash Drive

2007-05-09 08:43:00 Boredom lead me to making this post today. Exactly 10 years ago, back in 1997 when I entered 10th grade we had an additional academic subject which was computer science. In early 1998 I submitted my 10th grade project called "Nitrogen " which was written in Microsoft's GW-BASIC for DOS. I did this somwhere in August/September of '97. Those days in our school, there wasn't any harddisk in the 80286 machines - we had to boot using our 1.44in floppy diskette that was formatted with MS-DOS - and run whatever we could that was loaded in our floppy disk. I think that that system may bubble back soon if a 100GB USB pen drive could be used to boot the PC directly.[ Strangely, I can't seem to get a screenshot of a DOS app with graphics in WinXP. I even tried graphics.com but in vain. The screenshot I got is one that I took long ago probably on a Win98 PC. ]The NITROGEN.BAS is the original GW-BASIC source code which required line number in increments of 10. The NTG files are the docs files... More About: Fun

2007-04-30 17:15:00 I was in Coimbatore for the whole of April to take my university tests that I didn't take/clear during my college days in 2001-2004. Pretty boring when you're so used to sitting in front of the PC all day long and then for almost an entire month to just check mails in a café on alternate days. The college where I did my bachelors is famous for its Catering Science department. When I went to college this time to attend the tests, I found that two of the four Computer Science labs were upgraded to better machines (PIV HT 512MB RAM) and faster internet connectivity (2 mpbs). I remember the days when hitting F5 in VS .NET would take over 10 minutes to get it started and it finally became so frustrating that we were forced to continue to use version 6 of Visual Studio. Yet, these days hardly anoyone takes advantage of the new infrastructure, so I heard. A deserted lab with ice-cold processors now looks like a showroom full of brand new computers on sale. 300
2007-04-03 18:25:00 I recently saw 300 and the movie was just awesome ! This is one movie I wish I had seen with my friend Cibi who is an animation expert (heads the creative arm of a studio) and just loves to talk CG.Today, we prefer movies with superficial stories with animation blended-in that make it look realistic, yet an impossible situation and above all - an epic battle. The Matrix Trilogy is another famous example. With kind of creatures created in 300, no one really wanted to complain about the kind of impossible looking enemies the spartans had to deal with. Ultimately, it was the central-idea of "outrage" that took the audience by storm. Violence was depicted in a way that today's generation enjoys the most - Killdom. It just makes us want to goto the gym ?During my school days, I failed the history exam every time. Now Im on the hunt for The 300 Spartans which is a 1962 movie based on the same true story of the greek war. Even though 300 was inspired by Frank Miller's comic 300, the foun...
