Google Apps for Domains
2006-12-22 14:30:00 Ok, this may be old news, but this is intended for Indian individuals/startups especially non-IT ones. There is one thing I find common in a lot of individual freelancers/businessmen and very tiny-sized companies in India. The have their domain name registered for their official use yet disclose only their gmail account to others esp on the internet. I've seen at various places (joblistings, classifieds, realestate etc) where there is a proper website associated with the post but the contact email address given is their gmail email address.I've seen replies like "Is this a real company ?", "At least get a proper email address". People tend not to respond if the email address is that of free one thinking its not a reputed company. But there are genuine people who just don't yet have enough of their initial capital. The advantage of gmail over having to deal with their domain email is pretty obvious since Google has put tons of effort on Gmail.1. Spam. This is probably the most relev... More About: Domain , Main , Google Apps , Doma
Flickr Pro
2006-12-21 06:30:00 I just signed up for a Flick r Pro 2yr account - and I must say, its totally worth it.Flickr has a developer API that you can use to integrate Flickr services to your website. The only condition when hotlinking your own flickr photo onto your website is your page should have a link back to flickr.com. Interestingly, even for a commercial license, the API is free - unless the usage is very heavy. The reason for buying the pro account, is because they don't have a limit to their space and bandwidth usage, though the maximum upload transfer per month is limited to 2GB. The download transfer is unlimited. This is ideal for amateur photographers who on the practial side, are not going to to be uploading more than 2GB of photos per month - unless the new Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II's price comes down drastically ! For the average person, a 6MP camera is currently affordable. For a 6MP camera, the photo size ranges from 2MB to 2.5MB - which averages to 1000 photos upload per month. This should b...
Best Forums
2006-12-19 19:30:00 We are nearing the end of 2006 years since anno Domini. For the last 3yrs I've spent a lot of my time in forums which has now become a very good replacement for the-mostly-meaningless chatrooms. Good (and most) forums are mainly focused on a particular subject which streamlines the number of users posting content, which is the reason why only relevant topics are posted. And we are also glad to have volunteer moderators who filter out spam posts and such users. But now are we totally making way for blogs ? Blogs have been one of the latest buzz around lately but its definitely not going to wipe out forums. We're talking about Orangles and Apples - they'll always co-exist.Microsoft has listed the winners of the top bloggers for the year 2006. Hmm...somehow I doubt many would agree to the judges' decision.Today, Im listing the best forums IMHO on various topics esp technology related ones. I surely havent gone through the entire list in the world, but if its not in the top ten in G... More About: Forums , Forum , Best
Warren Buffet NOT = Billionaire ?
2006-12-15 13:00:00 I was searching for the video Liz Claman's interview with billionaire War ren Buffet that took place a few weeks ago. The best I could come up with was obviously at YouTube, though the original videos can be found in parts & segments at CNBC website which requires you to be registered too. The interview was apparently titled Warren Buffet The Billionaire Next Door. Now, searching for the interview title warren buffet the billionaire next door in Google, this is what Google's Did you mean had to suggest :Come on Google, I'm a big fan of G, but you should atleast get the billionaires names mapped correctly ! USB = XML ?
2006-12-14 14:30:00 I am total XML fan, wanting to have almost everything propogated via XML. I once posted in a PHP forum regarding ROR (Resources of a Resource) which is a replacement for robots.txt but in XML format. When I asked for others opinion, one response I got was from nielsene who said :Ugh, please no. I hate the growing trend to XML-ify everything.XML is a useful technology, but its not a pancea. In many cases it only adds overhead to both storage and processing. Now, I agree to his point of processing, but then again, processing techniques have become increasingly faster and storage is multiplying by second.I find a similar trend taking place in domain of USB devices. I was searching for an online store to buy the cool Bluetooth Laser Virtual Keyboard and found that it was available at thinkgeek. I was checking out other cool high-tech products and realised that the sitname thinkgeek was just right - theres hardly anything available that would be of interest to the general consumer. Only g... Privacy = Security
2006-12-12 15:00:00 What is our privacy level on the internet ? How secure are we on the internet ? Most of us who use the internet are unaware of privacy and security. You've often read of something like this when signing up : We'll never give your email address or disclose your personal information to any 3rd party member. Your privacy is very important to us - or something similar. And as a result, most of us sign up trusting whats written. There are two kinds of people who are overcautious of entering sensitive information over the internet : ones who use the net just for surfing and ones who know how the internet works to some technical level. The ones who use the net just for surfing are just browsin' around to kill time and/or checking mail. They wouldn't dare enter their credit card number for any reason what-so-ever and so they don't shop online. Ones who know the inner mechanisms may check for SSL certificate validity, safer browser, cookies etc. Not all sites can be checked manually, and ... More About: Security , Privacy , Riva
Today's Shoplifting = Tomorrow's Shopping ?
2006-11-28 13:30:00 Today we call it Shop lifting - tomorrow it'll be just called Shopping ! A lot of people have already envisioned what the future would be like based on the current trends in technology. Here, is what shopping could be like in the very-near-future:Person goes to a shop in a mall and takes the stuff off the rack that he wants (to buy).He walks out of the shop taking the items with him, not checking in at the counter because there is no counter !Its the future payment system that we're looking at. Sensors in the shop detect who you are and what what you've taken from the shop. The advanced computerised system will then use this information to track down the person's bank account details and debit the amount from his or her account. This concept may sound too simple to narrate but we all know this is no joke to implement. The level of sophistication for a system this complex can only be semi-dreamed of today but implausible till the next decade or so. Obviously, this and many other '... Conned !
2006-10-19 10:30:00 For the past 4 days, I've been trying to restore my internet connection which got suspended as a result of non-payment from my ISP's (YouTeleCom) point of view. Formerly known as Iqara, YouTeleCom has its Navi Mumbai office located at Sector 17, Vashi. I've always considered YouTeleCom's internet service far better than the others - for home based internet connections. Their internet speed is always at a constant, uptime is almost 99% a month except for those days when heavy floods become a remediable calamity. Customer support at the call-center is good enough, though their circle of information is always within their main office (Guregaon) and seem to know little or nothing when it comes to the point where information has to be gathered from the branch office. But its their billing system thats a total mess, esp their renewal section where it can take days for your connection to get renewed. Apparently, they've outsourced the home-to-home payment collection part to various ag...
Google To Buy YouTube Rumor
2006-10-08 13:38:00 I always had this gut feeling that Googl e would try to buy YouTube one day real soon. Google Video was defintely hitting on far better than MSN Video and Y! Video but if you place the tripod at YouTube and look at Google Video, the latter looked like a total disaster. Sure, Google is more conscious of copyright issues and has its legendary simple layout design which makes it more aesthetically appealing, but the content on YouTube is what people want to see ! Lets try to categorize the people who are going to surf the internet and check out YouTube Videos:· Children & Teenagers - They have all the time in world for playing around esp teenagers who are totally into the internet these days· The Jobless / Unemployed - You think they are busy job-hunting all day long ? This is their best pass-time in between 2 unsuccessful interviews, or maybe even trying out a video-resume ?· New Moive Production Company on the lookout for aspiring Actors & Directors - Well, if... The Coolest Mobile Phone Design
More articles from this author:2006-09-25 20:30:00 Apart from my PIV 3.0 GHz HT HP dc7100 desktop (nothing really to brag about these days after the launch of the Core Duo and Dual Core based machines) and HP laptop, I got myself a multi-functional AOI printer-scanner-copier, a LightScribe Double-layer DVD Writer, a Canon PowerShot 4.0MP and a Sony CyberShot 6.0MP digital cameras, 2 pen drives, an external hardisk, an iPod Nano and a Nokia 6681 (which I presented to my aunt) over a period of one year. For the past few months, I've managed to control myself in gadget-shopping...well, I finally realized that I've been draining all my income on gadgets and absolutely on nothing else ! But for the last few days I was thinking of finally getting a mobile phone for myself - the last gadget I wanted to get by the end of this year. So I pondered over the idea of getting just one more gadget within the budget.Being a total gadget freak and keeping myself abreast of the latest general technology trends, I haven't owned a mobile-phone so fa...
