Cisco, Apple Wrestling Over iPhone Trademark

The Cisco versus Apple trademark dispute still hasn’t been resolved: Cisco is granting Apple’s request for more time to reply to the lawsuit filed by the networking giant. “Cisco has agreed to give Apple an extension until Wednesday, Feb. 21. Cisco is fully committed to using the extra time to reach a mutually beneficial resolution,” the company stated in a media release. Cisco spokesman John Noh said the company wasn’t seeking money, but wants to negotiate an interoperability agreement with Apple. On January 10, Cisco announced it had filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent Apple from infringing upon and deliberately copying and using Cisco’s registered iPhone trademark. Cisco said it obtained the iPhone trademark in 2000 after completing the acquisition of Infogear which previously owned the mark and sold iPhone products for several years. There is a well known Wind ows Vista Upgrade secret in the IT community. In this article I talk about it and the possible legal implications! Please take this article “as-is” I provide no warranty of any kind by providing this information. Well to be honest it is no big secret as you can find this information anywhere online and many Microsoft staff must also know about it as they created this process! The “secret” is that the setup program (setup.exe) in Windows Vista ’s upgrade version will accept an installed copy of XP, W2K, or an un-activated copy of Vista itself as evidence of a previous installation. …and it is this last option that enables you to perform a “clean install” of an upgrade version of Windows Vista to any formatted or unformatted hard drive! Firefox suffers from a flaw that allows attackers to manipulate the authentication cookies of virtually any website, a vulnerability Bugzilla has deemed severe. It’s the second major security lapse for the open-source browser in as many days. The defect, which stems from the way Firefox writes to the “location.hostname” property of the document object model, can be exploited by a specially doctored script that sets variables that normally wouldn’t be accepted when parsing a regular URL, according to researcher Michal Zalewski, who uncovered Monday’s vulnerability as well. Pirate Windows Vista Out Already

As Microsoft kicked off the global launch of its long-awaited Wind ows Vista , the software giant’s new operating system also hit the streets of China - in pirated form. In an electronic market in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, scores of sellers were offering the brand new software for as little as 10 yuan ($1.66), along with Microsoft Office, anti-virus software and others. The sellers said Vista was available several weeks before its launch, although they would not say how they got hold of the version. Described as the “official version of the new generation operating system” on its cover, the pirated copy offered an identification code at the back of the disk for downloading the software. YouTube Shares Ad Money

YouTube founder Chad Hurley has confirmed that his team was working on a revenue-sharing mechanism that would “reward creativity”. The system should be available in a matter of months and is to be supported on various forms of advertising, including short clips (up to 3 seconds) shown ahead of the actual film. The offer is not, however, for all of YouTube?s 70m users: it applies only to people who own the full copyright of the videos that they are uploading to the YouTube website. YouTube is currently working on “audio fingerprinting” technologies to identify copyrighted material, Mr Hurley said in a session on social networking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Hurley emphasized that YouTube was still working out the technology and processes involved - both for the rewards system and the video clip advertising system. Mobile Phones Sales Top One Billion in 2006

Market researcher IDC announced that mobile phone sales topped one billion for all of 2006. Handset vendors shipped a record high 294.9 million mobile phones (20% more than last year) in the last quarter resulting in a year total of 1.02 billion compared to 832.8 million wireless handsets sold in 2005. Nations in emerging market areas of Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America accounted for a higher portion of mobile phone purchases last year than mature areas such as the North America, Japan and Western Europe. Google defuses Googlebombs

Google has taken action against Googlebombing, the act of hundreds of Internet users linking up specific words with certain web sites in order to produce a desired (and usually comical) search result. To remedy the problem Google altered the algorithm by improving the way they analyze link structures on web sites. Google’s Matt Cutts says that the algorithm scales well and even helps prevent Googlebombs in other languages. Famous ?linkbombing? cases include “failure” producing a link to the current US President, George W. Bush, “waffles” with Senator John Kerry, “talentless hack” with Adam Mathes and finally stopping the word “Jew” from pointing to a hate site and instead directing users to the Wikipedia entry on Jewish people. Mac OS X?s Aqua has matured very slowly over the last few years. It seems like many OS X users are tired of Aqua and ready for a new revolutionary GUI to compliment and enhance the experience of using a Mac. With each major update to one of Apple?s applications, its seems like the days with blue gel scroll-bars and candy bar progress bars are ending. Proof-of-Concept adware program for OS X announced

Online fraudsters may be ready to put Mac users in their sights. On Thursday, antivirus firm F-Secure published a brief analysis of a proof-of-concept adware program for the Mac OS X that could theoretically hook into any application to run attacker-specified code. The program, dubbed IAdware by F-Secure, could be silently installed in a user’s account without requiring administrator rights. Google to launch Web-Based Powerpoint

Google is working on a Web-based Power point clone to complement its Docs & Spreadsheets application, according to files accidentally discovered by Alex at the Google Operating System blog. The information in the files refers to an application called “Presently” — apparently a reference to ‘Docs and Spreadsheets’ original name Writely.com — that can convert documents into online slideshows. The files have since been modified by Google to remove reference to the term “Presently,” but a screenshot remains. By launching an online slideshow app, Google completes its office suite and moves closer into competition with products like Zoho, ThinkFree and of course Microsoft Office Live.
