Google defuses Googlebombs
2007-02-14 20:11:01
Google has taken action against Googlebombing, the act of hundreds of Internet users linking up specific words with certain web sites in order to produce a desired (and usually comical) search result. To remedy the problem Google altered the algorithm by improving the way they analyze link structures on web sites. Google’s Matt Cutts says that the algorithm scales well and even helps prevent Googlebombs in other languages. Famous ?linkbombing? cases include “failure” producing a link to the current US President, George W. Bush, “waffles” with Senator John Kerry, “talentless hack” with Adam Mathes and finally stopping the word “Jew” from pointing to a hate site and instead directing users to the Wikipedia entry on Jewish people. Google says that there have been less than 100 “well-known” Googlebombs since 2001 and overall the problem was a harmless one. Google claims that the reason that the company has decided to fin...

Next OS X rumored to feature new GUI
2007-02-14 20:11:01
Mac OS X?s Aqua has matured very slowly over the last few years. It seems like many OS X users are tired of Aqua and ready for a new revolutionary GUI to compliment and enhance the experience of using a Mac. An increasingly popular theme for Apple?s latest applications have been smooth unified metal and dark glass. With each major update to one of Apple?s applications, its seems like the days with blue gel scroll-bars and candy bar progress bars are ending. Its no question that Leopard will feature a new GUI, but no one really knows what it will look like. Its no doubt that Leopard will feature resolution-independent graphics support that will allow for greater resolution displays with the same and windows sizes. However, the details of the interface have not yet been revealed, but many are hoping that we will see the final announcement of Leopard features at Macworld 2007, where chances of a GUI announcement are high. Apple Gazette has featured a new rumor from a supposed insider t...

Proof-of-Concept adware program for OS X announced
2007-02-14 20:11:01
Online fraudsters may be ready to put Mac users in their sights. On Thursday, antivirus firm F-Secure published a brief analysis of a proof-of-concept adware program for the Mac OS X that could theoretically hook into any application to run attacker-specified code. The program, dubbed IAdware by F-Secure, could be silently installed in a user’s account without requiring administrator rights. We won’t disclose the exact technique used here - it’s a feature not a bug - but let’s just say that installing a System Library shouldn’t be allowed without prompting the user,” stated F-Secure in the blog post. “Especially as it only requires copy permissions.” Vulnerability researchers have increasingly focused on finding flaws in the Mac OS. During the month of November, two serious flaws in Apple’s operating system were disclosed as part of the Month of Kernel Bugs (MoKB) project. The IAdware proof-of-concept code did nothing malicious, ...
