An infectious wristwatch
2008-05-23 14:19:00 I was blog-hopping via Technorati.jp and I chanced upon this cool new wristwatch, created by Tokyo Flash. Japan, the land of trends and raves, has come out with yet another innovative contraption that’s sure to whet the appetites of gadget freaks and fashionistas. It’s a new timepiece with an intriguing, captivating way of telling time, ... More About: Wristwatch
Nokia BH-604 Bluetooth headset
2008-05-18 18:00:00 I’m very delighted to have been accepted by WOM World / Nokia as one of their gadget testers. For my first go at it, they sent me two units: a Nokia N81 8GB mobile phone and a Nokia BH-604 Bluetooth Wireless Headset , which is a beauty! Music has not really been a big part of my life — I’ve just never been totally interested in collecting albums, memorizing lyrics, knowing about artists… I’d listen to music, yes, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to have my own CDs. Good thing, too, because I never had the urge to buy gadgets for music. Until now. When I first put on this Bluetooth headset and played what music I had on the phone, I was an instant convert! Now I find myself asking friends for music files, and ripping CDs for saving tracks on my mobile phone. The Nokia BH-604 (despite the not-so-flattering designation it’s been given) is an awesome piece of work. Listening to music with it is like being in a concert hall. (I have done that, a... DigitalFilipino.com Club meet-up in Davao
2008-05-17 17:59:00 The get-together of DigitalFilipino.com Club members and Davao ’s IT professionals last 14 May 2008 at Casa Leticia was an eye-opener for many first-timers. There were more than 30 Dabawenyos who attended, most of whom were, before then, uninitiated into this different sort of organization. Janette Toral, initiator and representative of the Club, was delighted to see so many attend the event. The DigitalFilipino.com Club is a nationwide association of e-commerce practitioners and enthusiasts, IT professionals and companies. It is a business organization, in that its focus is on how to maximize Filipino talent in bringing success to members’ businesses. I have been a member for several years now, and I have directly benefited from my membership. Twice already I have closed business deals with other members, thanks to the networking activities that the Club constantly conducts. Members get access to valuable research material, the Club’s extensive knowledge base, and... More About: Meet
Filipino mobile platform, anyone?
2008-05-12 15:55:00 I agree with one of my favorite tech news sources (TechCrunch.com) that the next technology war will be fought in the realm of mobile platforms. In the dawn of OS-agnostic and Web-deployed applications, the old operating-systems war seems to be finally fizzling out. (A rather anticlimactic denouement, if you ask me.) Microsoft and Apple have ... More About: Mobile , Filipino , Platform , Mobile Platform
Nokia N81 8GB
2008-05-11 13:24:00 The Nokia N81 8GB is a smartphone with a mix of impressive features… and rather disappointing disadvantages. There?s the obvious advantage of having built-in 8 gigabytes of memory space for applications, games, music, videos, photos, what have you. Some mobile-phone critics have complained about the lack of an expansion slot for more memory, but ...
WordCamp Philippines 2008
2008-05-09 22:19:00 As avid Word Press bloggers and developers know very well, WordCamp is the event when it comes to this “state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform”. And we are bringing it to the Philippines ! I normally write about blogging stuff over at Blogie Blog, but this post isn’t about blogging. WordCamp, you see, isn’t like the Mindanao Bloggers Summit ... More About: 2008
DigitalFilipino Club get-together
2008-05-07 16:16:00 After a long spell of being away from Davao, leading e-commerce advocate Janette Toral will be back in town for a long-awaited “eyeball” of Digital Filipino Club members. In particular, the upcoming event will be the Davao E-Commerce and E-Business Owners Meet-Up, on 14 May 2008 (Wednesday). Here’s the official press release: The DigitalFilipino.com Club is organizing a ...
Lost in translation, and then some
2008-04-28 04:00:00 Ostensibly in retaliation to Western media?s coverage of anti-Chinese demonstrations in Europe, the Sports Network website was hacked last Sunday. The site was defaced with the image that you see here (captured by ChristineLu.com). Repeated attacks, most probably serious denial-of-service assaults, have caused the site to be taken down. After a few days, the site ... More About: Lost , Translation
Google: ?Don?t be evil?
2008-04-25 18:27:00 I don?t know how many of you know this, but Google has always had an unofficial corporate motto: Don?t be evil. It was pronounced in 2001 by Paul Buchheit, creator of Google?s Gmail (but who has now left to found his own Internet venture). At that time, Google was still this idealistic group of young ... What?s on the horizon for Davao IT
2008-04-13 13:48:00 What’s on the horizon for Davao ’s IT industry? We’re seeing more software development companies being put up (by locals and by immigrants), and we’re seeing newfangled products and services being offered locally. This post is only about a couple of teasers. The real deal will follow as soon as I have more details to blog about. A ... More About: Horizon
Why Microsoft wants Yahoo!
2008-04-11 21:51:00 Why does Microsoft want to acquire Yahoo ? Is it because the software giant perceives an impending loss of share in the OS and office-productivity software markets? Research analysts from Gartner Research think so, but I have my doubts. More About: Windows Vista , Yahoo!
Failure of representation
2008-04-11 17:59:00 The last Techno Kapihan, which happened on April 2nd, was not a very successful event, in my opinion. Not a failure, mind you, but disappointing. For one, there were less than a dozen who attended; although, there was a hopeful sign: we had three or four first-timers. The old guard were there, but sans a couple ... More About: Failure
PLDT blocking Google?
2008-04-10 08:24:00 PLDT seems to be blocking Google and other search engines, so that they can offer their own search product with advertisements.
Janette Toral ? Philippine IT advocate
2008-04-09 09:39:00 I FIRST MET Janette Toral when the city’s IT industry was still young, back in 1998, and I was only beginning to foray into this new arena. Ever since then, Janette has played a part — albeit silently — in the furtherance of Davao IT. Her constant encouragement and support are invaluable even to ... More About: Digital , Advocate

Bayantel Wireless? way less than expected!
2008-04-01 15:03:00 I don’t stay in the office — in my work, I find myself in clients’ own offices, or in one of Davao’s many WIFI-enabled coffee shops. But, even in this age of high cellular phone coverage, I found that I still needed an "office" phone. So I got myself a Bayantel Wireless , which is practically ...

TechnoKapihan for this month postponed
2008-03-25 08:29:00 The Techno Kapihan session for this month is a no-go. According to ICT Davao Inc.’s Bert Barriga, this monthly powwow will instead be held on the 2nd of April 2008, from 2 to 4 PM. No venue set yet. 2008-03-24 14:19:00 I’m really getting good at this…. If you’ve been reading IT talks! since its inception last year (actually it was “born” in 2004), you’d know that I’ve transferred the site (address-wise) twice now. In its infancy, the blog was found at http://ittalkscolumn.blogspot.com. When I started acquiring domains, I put the site under http://ittalks.robilloblog.com, thinking I’d ... Business Model 2.0
2008-03-24 08:30:00 In a recent article at TechCrunch.com, it was reported that the Japanese government is considering a move to crack down on file sharing (read: Torrent or Kazaa). In Japan, the most popular peer-to-peer (P2P) network for the distribution of computer files is Winny. In simple terms, ?P2P? is defined as the combined connectivity and bandwidth ... While doing translation work?
2008-03-21 20:26:00 …I thought of taking a break to post here. I’ve been doing Japanese-to-English translation work for a consulting firm based out of Makati for a couple of years now. I really can’t talk about the documents I translate because they’re sealed under a non-disclosure agreement. But I suppose I can hint at the contents a bit. ... More About: Work , Translation
