Amazing Folding Couch Brand Identified
2007-03-09 15:56:02
Remember the folding couch that surfaced on the Internet a few weeks back? It didn’t have any brand name associated with it or any other information. I just assumed that some guy put it together and thought it would be cool to demonstrate it in a mall. But, it turns out that there is now a company behind these eye-catching masterpieces. FlexibleLove, as it is called, manufactures 5 couches/chairs of various sizes, from the FlexibleLove 16, which seats 1 to 16 people, to the Mini, which seats your favorite pet hamster. The products are labeled as “experimental”, so I don’t believe they’re available quite yet to consumers. Not only is this new furniture fashionably inclined, but it is also friendly to the environment: FlexibleLove? experimental furniture incorporates an ?accordian-like, honeycomb? structure to create durable furniture pieces produced from widely-available, low-cost recycled materials. FlexibleLove? furniture pieces, such as FlexibleLo...

Amazing Animal Sculptures Made From Scrap Metal

This frog is just one of the 20 or so sculptures created from junk scrap metal by an unknown artist. It takes quite the creative mind to come up with such masterpieces from trash. Hybrid Hard Drive Cuts Vista Boot Times In Half
2007-03-07 21:54:13
Samsung’s Hybrid Hard Drive , or HHD, is being released to OEM manufacturers today to be included in the newest laptops. The hybrid drives sport 128/256 MB of NAND flash memory to complement the traditional hard drive space (80-160 GB). What exactly does this mean as far as performance is concerned? Samsung claims that their new HHDs offer 5x the reliability of conventional hard disks while shaving up to 50% off Windows Vista boot times and cutting power consumption by 70-90% to deliver about 30-minutes more laptop run-time off battery I’d say that’s a nice upgrade to a power-hungry laptop. Amazing Ray-tracing 3D Renderer Built From Scratch Over One Weekend
2007-03-06 09:50:03
Can you build a 3D renderer, starting with a completely blank C++ file? How about in two days? That is exactly what SuperJer did, and he posted the results to his web site. I must admit that this guy really has skills. I honestly wouldn’t even know where to start. In one weekend’s time, I could possibly draw 2D and 3D shapes, perhaps adding a simple animation scheme. But a 3D renderer? Amazing ! Factor into development time the fact that each image takes a significant amount of time to render, and you realize that this guy must have been coding blazing fast. On his site, he has posted all of his resulting renderings along the way, as well as his source code so you can try it yourself. The amazing image above is displayed in his stress test section. Adobe To Release Online Version of Photoshop
2007-03-06 09:50:03
Adobe announced yesterday that the company is planning to take the popular image editing software online within six months.  This free version will not contain all of the professional functionality of the standalone application, but will instead offer a more simple subset in order to cater to a wider audience.  Adobe plans to generate money from advertising revenue. Will this become as widely used as their desktop application?  Probably not.  However, it is a good way to cater to those who already have the ability to do image editing in the desktop version, but who may not have access to it at work or on the road.  I’d say this is a wise choice, as the market is quickly shifting to web-capable applications and Adobe is being left in the dust. The main annoyance that I foresee with this product is the necessity to upload images in order to manipulate them, then download the resulting image.  To me, this would be quite a pain, and will probably...

View The Wonders of Your Inner Ear With Ear Scope
2007-03-06 09:50:03
One of the few places on your own body that you can’t see is deep inside of your ear canal.  With mirrors, you can see your backside, up your nose, in your mouth, etc.  But it is impossible to see inside your ear.  Well, that’s where the new Ear Scope gadget comes in.  Light up this puppy, peep through the scope, insert the pick, and you have yourself a live view of your inner ear to probe around and scrape away the oh-so-disgusting wax.  Not only that, but hook it up to your TV and you have a lovely evening of entertainment for yourself and all of your friends. With one of these, maybe we can finally obey the labels found on all Q-tip boxes that warn us not to stick them into our ear canals. [via Engadget] Tags: Ear scope, inner ear, clean, gadgets, hygiene

First-rate Freeware: Paint.NET
2007-03-06 09:50:03
I had heard about Pain t.NET previously, but just brushed it off as another Adobe Photoshop clone.  I use GIMP occasionally, and it’s a decent photo editor, though I have my complaints. Then I decided to finally give Paint.NET a try.  To my utter surprise, it was a very refreshing experience!  First off, it runs extremely fast.  By the time Photoshop even opens, you can open Paint.NET and practically have your work done.  Every tool is incredibly smooth in its response time.  There is no “catching up” time for brushes and other tools. Aside from speed, what really grabbed my attention is the sheer intuitiveness of the interface.  After using Paint.NET for 5 minutes, I constantly ask myself, “why doesn’t Photoshop have this feature?”  Here’s what really stands out to me: The gradient tool lets you see the gradient as you are applying it, as opposed to drawing a line and seeing it after you’ve made...

Commercial Software Offered Free Daily? And Legally
2007-03-06 09:50:03
If you haven’t yet discovered the Giveaway Of The Day web site, now’s the time to start. Out of all the sites that I visit on a daily basis, this is one of my favorites. The premise is that each day a full-version commercial software product for Windows is offered for free. I have scored software that monitors my hard drive status (HDDStatus), speeds up my computer (Advanced WindowsCare V2 Pro), changes the look and feel of the Windows GUI (Aston), posts blogs remotely (Post2Blog) and many others just by installing them and activating them on the day they were posted. There is also a game section where games that are usually $19.95 or more are offered for free, many of which are very entertaining. World?s Largest Plane (Pics)
2007-03-06 09:50:03
[via Digg.com] “There was a little excitement at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas with the arrival of the world’s largest aircraft, a Russian Antonov 225. It was there to deliver a very large power transformer for Nevada Power, which had been built in Turkey. Apparently G.E. or Westinghouse weren’t capable, or they lost the ‘bid’ to Turkey.” This plane is colossal. It’s truly amazing that it can even get off of the ground. Of course, the pictures don’t show it in the air, so maybe it can’t. read more | digg story Tags: airplane, plane, travel, flight

Disney Unveils Animatronic Muppets, No Puppeteer In Sight
2007-03-06 09:50:03
Not to be confused with the mute Mickey and Minney costumes, these new robotic Muppets can interact vocally with Disney park visitors.  The first to be tested is the “Muppet Mobile Lab”, driven by Dr. Honeydew and Beaker.  The little egg-shaped vehicle roams around the park, interacting with guests by answering questions, spraying water and bubbles, leading the hokeypokey, and making humorous comments.  It was debuted in the California Adventure theme park last week. Laser Technology Lets Your Kids Draw On Your Walls Without Getting Punished
2007-03-06 09:50:03
This is quite an amazing new technology from Philips.  Using a lit up, virtual paint bucket, your child can mix the “paint” color of his or her choice and begin to draw pictures directly on any wall.  The picture can then be added to with more colors and even animated using pre-designed templates. I’m thinking, “forget the kids, I want one of those!”  [via Gizmodo] Tags: paint, lasers, walls, toys, art

Google Maps Now Offers Real-time Traffic Data
2007-03-06 09:50:03
As if Google Maps couldn’t get any better, they have now added a 4th view to their popular web app: traffic data. This is a wonderful addition to their lineup that will make life easier for commuters and travelers alike. The feature was made available to mobile users in mid-2006, but has just recently become a part of their desktop application. The roads that are monitored contain green, red, and yellow sections, indicating normal traffic, some congestion, and heavy congestion respectively. At this point in time, only the interstate is available in my city of Tucson. Hopefully this will be expanded to include other heavily-trafficked roads in the near future. 6 Very Useful Greasemonkey Scripts
2007-03-06 09:50:03
I mentioned in my Top 15 Firefox Extensions post that Greasemonkey didn’t count as one of the top extensions simply because it is a plugin enabler in and of itself. If you are unfamiliar with Greasemonkey, here is a description from Wikipedia: Greasemonkey is a Mozilla Firefox extension that allows users to install scripts that make on-the-fly changes to specific web pages. As the Greasemonkey scripts are persistent, the changes made to the web pages are executed every time the page is opened, making them effectively permanent for the user running the script. Greasemonkey can be used for adding new functionality to web pages (for example, embedding price comparison in Amazon.com web pages), fixing rendering bugs, combining data from multiple webpages, and numerous other purposes. Well written Greasemonkey scripts can integrate changes so well that their additions appear to be natural parts of the web page. I’m fairly new to Greasemonkey myself, but in the last few month...

Flashy Golf Ball For Even More Golf Cheats
2007-03-06 09:50:03
At first glance, it would seem that the Twilight Tracer golf ball would be a good companion to the GPS-enabled golf cap in order to boost your game using technology. As you can see, it flashes wildly with a brilliant red light so that you will not lose sight of it. However, I see a “hole in one” or two of the manufacturer’s claims (sorry, bad pun). (more…)

The Truth About Switching To A Mac
2007-03-06 09:50:03
I’m not much of a Mac user, nor will I ever be, in my opinion.  I’d switch to Linux long before switching to Mac.  However, there are those who choose Macs as their computers of choice, and that’s fine.  I just don’t like to hear fanboyish comments all the time that Macs are the greatest things to ever happen to the world. That is why I like this list of what to expect if you are going to switch.  There’s no fluff or fanboyism, just a completely honest viewpoint about what to expect.  So, I offer it to those who are considering a switch.  It is in their best interest to get an honest list than a biased one (either for or against Macs).

Are You Unfit To Be A Software Developer?
2007-03-06 09:50:03
Do you really have what it takes to develop software? I’m not talking about huge, multithreaded applications, but simply the ability to solve the most basic of problems. For example, solve these: FizzBuzz Write a program that prints the numbers from 1 to 100. But for multiples of three print ?Fizz? instead of the number and for the multiples of five print ?Buzz?. For numbers which are multiples of both three and five print ?FizzBuzz?. Factorial Using recursion, write a function to compute the factorial value of an integer, n. Assume n >= 1. Can you solve these without looking up the solutions? In under 5 minutes? If so, assuming you are a CS graduate, you are one of the 1 in 200 who can. This almost unbelievable number is reported by CodingHorror as an estimate of actual job interview results. If you are one of the 199 in 200 who cannot solve these, and are wanting to get a job as a developer, please start over or find another career. (more…)

First-rate Freeware: .NET Snippet Compiler
2007-03-06 09:50:03
Do you ever have the need of creating a quick test program in order to check coding syntax in .NET? The Snippet Comp iler program, as I mentioned in this post, is what I use to accomplish this task. Simply type in your code and hit F5 (or click the green arrow button), just like in Visual Studio. You don’t have to create a new project, save your file, or do anything other than type it in and run it. Compile-time errors and auto-complete are handled exactly as in Visual Studio. This is a perfect tool for those who participate in coding forums or offer tech support, as it takes care of those quick-and-dirty tasks. There is a version available for both .NET 1.1 and 2.0. C#, VB.NET, and JScript.NET are the supported languages. Download page

Memory Infinite: Link Your USB Drives Together Like A Snake
2007-03-06 09:50:03
To continue on with the USB drive theme, here’s another interesting one. If you constantly find yourself needing to buy more and more USB flash drives, why not just link them all together into one? The Memory Infinite does just that. By providing a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other, you can link together as many as you’d like (as long as you’re within hardware and software limitations). Plus, they can bend every which way, allowing you to create a work of art while you’re at it. The caveat: just because you have your drives linked together doesn’t mean that all the space from all of them will be combined into one logical grouping in your operating system. For instance, three drives linked together would show up as drive E:, F:, and G: in Windows. There’s no way around it, but it’s still a cool concept. Plus, you can use any USB device on the female end of the drive, so this is a nice way to make your life e...

Locate Local WiFi Hotspots, Google Maps Style
2007-03-06 09:50:03
The startup HotSpot r provides a Google Maps mashup of the locations of local hotspots. The site is entirely user-driven, so if you know of areas that are not listed, submit them so other users can benefit. As with other Wi-Fi finders, you can search for hotspots by entering a city, ZIP code or place, then get maps, driving directions, phone numbers, etc. Hotspotr also lets you rate and review existing hotspots based on criteria like wireless quality, food/drink quality, availability of AC outlets and so on. It’s fairly easy to add hotspots of your own, though you have to supply the location’s address; there’s no built-in address lookup. [via Lifehacker]

Step Aside, Nintendo Power Glove! Bluetooth Glove Is On Its Way
2007-03-06 09:50:03
Remember this? It’s bulky, corded, and inaccurate…not to mention dead. We can no longer refer to the Nintendo Power Glove as the only game controller designed to fit on your hand. This bluetooth masterpiece is about to take center stage, not only for your Wii gaming, but other bluetooth electronics as well. “The glove is made out of standard acrylic, but has fingertip sensors that induces a current when touched together. By making different combinations between your fingers and thumbs, you could send one of a few signals to be picked up by other Blue tooth devices.” It even comes complete with lens flare and a thundering storm. Maybe someday it will detect movement, as opposed to just contact between fingers. Then I can see it being even more useful. [via Gizmodo]

Dog-like Robot Retains Balance, Looks Ridiculous
2007-03-06 09:50:03
Appropriately named BigDog, This quadruped (4-legged) robot can master off-road conditions and slopes as well as carry heavy loads. It is being developed by Boston Dynamics. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog’s legs are articulated like an animal?s, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight. One of its more eye-opening features is that when pushed, it will regain its balance and continue on its merry way.

Yahoo Tracks Google AdSense Data Via MyBlogLog Widget
2007-02-26 21:49:01
[via Digg.com] “Yahoo has a widget called MyBlogLog which (they recently purchased for 10 million dollars). People were a little mystified why Yahoo would pay so much for a widget. Turns out they are using it to track Adsense data to get a edge. (video included)” It is interesting, though not entirely surprising, that Yahoo has followed this path. But is it ethical? Yahoo may not care at this point, with Google AdSense clearly dominating the online revenue market.read more | digg story
