Microsoft approves Blue Monster wine
2007-09-20 14:20:00
I just read this on tech Crunch UK and i wanted to share It?s ironic that, a couple of days after the head of Mozilla Europe castigated Microsoft ?s attitude to Open Source and innovation in a TechCrunch interview, Microsoft today launches its own-label wine designed to promote innovation inside the company. The FT has the story today of how Brit blogger, cartoonist and ?Marketing 2.0? guy Hugh Macleod, and Steve Clayton, chief technology officer at Microsoft?s UK Partner Group managed to convince the higher-ups that the Redmond giant had to start getting a bit groovier. Clayton has been at the forefront of the ?Blue Monster ? movement, which promotes a more open attitude to geeks and tech for Ballmer?s baby. Steve uses the image on his business card and is the administrator of the Friends of Blue Monster Facebook group. To this end they?ve created the Blue Monster Reserve, exclusively for Microsoft and its employees. I understand the pair also had some spiritual support fro...

A Microsoft Service for Sharing Useful or Artistic Office Documents
2007-08-31 09:55:00
Microsoft today unveiled a new social website for Microsoft Office  users where they can upload Word Documents , PowerPoint Presentations or Excel Spreadsheets. Known as the Art of Office, this place is not another Scribd or eSnips - it's basically for people to share Office documents that may either be useful to others or have an element of art in them. Official description is slightly unclear - Art of Office is a place for people to submit artistic and/or useful content made using Office applications (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint). While the Office site is a creation of the Mac team at Microsoft Office, it accepts content created with either Windows or Mac Office programs. Any can download Office documents from Art of Office and use them in their own presentations / spreadsheets.Visit Art of Office.Continue At Source   Source: labnol.blogspot.com

Windows Live Hotmail gets update - 5GB inboxes for free, 10GB for Plus
2007-08-15 06:17:00
Yes the Hotmail team has been quiet for a while since their v1 launch, however they've just launched a small but feature-packed update. As well as offering free accounts the new storage size of 5GB, paying customers (Hotmail Plus or MSN Premium) now get 10GB. Ellie over on the Hotmail team has blogged the full list of changes, here's a few we're glad to see released: Improved contact management lets you merge duplicate contacts. This is a personal favourite, so nice work by the Contacts team. Auto-away messages, useful for when you go on holiday Account forwarding, so now you can forward your Hotmail account to Gmail or Yahoo. Why you'd want to do that I don't know ;) As is usual with the Hotmail updates, features will be rolled out to the various bays in order to minimise any potential problems. We'll keep you updated on how this progresses   Read More in omar Shahins Blog

Silverlight 1.0 RC1 is Here!
2007-07-27 22:09:00
As indicated in a previous post, we're homing in on the launch of Silverlight 1.0, and today marks another milestone with the launch of the first release candidate. Since the beta we released at MIX, we've fixed approximately 2000 bugs and work items and we're now feature complete with the final JavaScript-based API. This version of the runtime is vastly more stable than the beta release: our stress test runs show improvements of two or three orders of magnitude in many cases, and the product demonstrates the polish one might expect from a near-final release. Along with the 1.0 RC1 release, we've also refreshed the 1.1 bits. We've not exposed any significant changes in the .NET extensions, but the 1.1 "alpha refresh" includes the same core runtime as 1.0 RC1. A note on installation: if you have the beta release on your machine, there's no need to uninstall - simply run the RC1 installer and it will overwrite the existing binaries on your machine.Download At Source ...

Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2 is now available and includes a "go live" license
2007-07-27 11:24:00
Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2, including Team Foundation Server 2008, is now available for download.  As mentioned in Soma's post, Beta 2, unlike beta 1, includes the "go live" provision in the license, meaning that you can use it in production.  We've been using TFS 2008 beta 2 on our main internal dogfood server now for the last two months (well, it's close to being the same as beta 2 -- it's actually an very early snapshot).  You can check out the stats in Brian's post. When Beta 1 was released, I put together a list of links about the Team Build features in Orcas.  If you are looking for a list of links related to TFS 2005, you can find those here (and Jeff has posted links to the TechEd 2007 presentations). Here's my updated list of links about Team Build features in TFS 2008 (check out Brian's post for a list of all TFS 2008 features).  If you have questions or feedback about anything in beta 2, please let us know ...

Announcing Family.Show 2.0
2007-07-20 19:06:00
Three months ago, we launched Family .Show , our first end-to-end reference sample for WPF. Family.Show is a genealogy program that demonstrates the usage of WPF for a complex, realistic scenario. If you're a fledgling WPF developer who wants to pore over some code that demonstrates best practices for application construction, there's nothing better out there today. In the intervening months, we've had many thousands of downloads of both the binary and the source code. We've had several offers to localize the application into languages ranging from Spanish to Russian, many people have sent in feature requests, and we've had some great feedback about the application itself. Here's a few examples: "This is incredible application. So nice and powerful. That is exactly what I am searching for in applications: Simplicity, Power and Beauty... You cannot imagine how many people was impressed by it, including myself." "This is just a gorgeous program.  The graphics are extremely ...

MSN Cartoon Beta: Create smileys & animation cartoons from pictures & photo
2007-07-17 15:57:00
It looks like Microsoft?s China development is more active than anyone else. Earlier, there was a version of Windows Live Messenger for Nokia S60 available for download only through MSN China. This time, they have released a new web based tool called MSN Cartoon Beta that allows users to create smileys & cartoons from photos & pictures uploaded to the site by converting them using facial recognition technology. Once you upload a photo to the website, it will be converted to a cartoon. Later you can select a hair style for the animation and a facial expression (happy, sad, angry, winking, etc) based on the emoticons that are available in Windows Live Messenger. The website is in Chinese so you might need to walk through this video created by Microsoft blogger Sukesh to navigate the site better. When you visit the website for the first time, it will prompt you to install a software which is compatible with Windows XP, 2003 and Vista only.   source

Come to a Silverlight Lab in Redmond

From time to time, we run development labs in Redmond where folk can bring their applications in and work on them in a secure lab environment, with hands-on support from ourselves and other members of the product group. The next one is taking place on three days commencing July 23rd. These are not training labs - there won't be a full agenda of sessions. Instead, they're issue resolution labs, this one focused on Silverlight 1.0. We'll have some early release candidate builds available for testing and porting beta code; you'll have a private office with multiple machines already set up (plus the ability to bring in your own machines), along with an Internet connection, telephone, and plenty of food and drink available throughout the day. You can work as late as you like - the facility is open until you leave the building.
