Microsoft Enables New Ways to Deploy Windows Vista
2007-04-02 19:56:00
Q&A: New options to license desktop virtualization and diskless PCs give Wind ows Vista Enterprise customers more choices, says the director of Microsoft 's Windows Business Group.   REDMOND, Wash., April 2, 2007 ? For many IT professionals within large organizations, maintaining control over their desktop environments is becoming an increasingly tall order. The cost of deploying and administering PCs ? sometimes tens of thousands of PCs ? across an enterprise can be significant, especially without the proper infrastructure in place to aid in the automation of these tasks. Add to that the growing complexity created by more mobile and temporary workers as well as new data security and compliance requirements ? such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA in the United States ? in regulated industries, and it is little wonder that some large enterprises are exploring alternative approaches to traditional desktop management. With the combination of Window Vista Enterprise Edition and the ...

Another Cool Video From channel 9 Scott St. Jean is a program manager in Microsoft IT. He makes sure that the largest Share Point installation in the world keeps working. Mark Swenson is also a program manager in Microsoft IT. His job is making sure that our intranet search is working, including things like making sure people can't find documents that they shouldn't have rights to. I sat down with them to talk about what it takes to migrate, and index, and upgrade 12 terabytes of data to the latest version. If that wasn?t challenging enough, they started working with the products before they were the latest version, when they were still under development. Their experience shook out a lot of bugs that were addressed before the real world had to deal with them.     See Video Here

"Live In A Box" - A Way To Learn Live SDKs
2007-03-18 07:59:00
The Windows Dev blog posted last week about a new project that has appeared on CodePlex called "Live In A Box". First thing to note about this project is that although it's been made by people who work at Microsoft, it's not actually an official offering from the software company. So, what exactly is this project about? Well basically it's a way to learn some of the different Live API offerings, quickly showing you pre-existing code and allowing you to modify it and get to learn what exactly is going on. The project itself is an ongoing project and is continually being built upon and new things added; currently it shows you an example of the following: Search Application (using the Live Search SDK)  Map Application (using the Virtual Earth SDK) Messenger Activity Web Gadgets (live.com/Spaces) Windows Live Contacts Control WPF/e The project itself is a good place to start off if you're thinking of doing something using any of the above mentioned technologies ...

Fueling the Windows XP Direct X 10 Debate
2007-03-17 21:42:00
Here's a question, and maybe this has already been addressed elsewhere, but this caught my eye: At the very recent GDC ?07, Crytek demonstrated, for the first time publicly, their Sandbox 2 application for editing and creating levels in their upcoming game Crysis. The project that's being used for the demonstration is called "dx10.cry." If you ask me, that alludes to the project being worked on in a DX10 environment. Which OS supports DX10? Wind ows Vista. Which OS does NOT support DX10? Windows X P... or does it? Now, we all know how adamant Microsoft and its employees are about debunking DX10 for XP (see: http://letskilldave.com/archive/2006/10/1 7/DirectX-10-for-Windows-XP_3F00_--Repeat -after-me_3A00_-No.-No.-No_2E00_.aspx ), soooooo... on to my main question: Why is this demo being publicly presented in a Windows XP Pro 64-bit environment? The header of the application says "dx10.cry - Sandbox 2 (tm) (x64 Edition)"and we can clearly see at the beginning of the first ...

Best-Selling Games of February 2007
2007-03-17 21:35:00
The NPD Group released its report on the top-selling software for the month of February, and there were a number of big winners spread out across multiple platforms, although the Xbox 360 had more games in the top ten than any other system.   Unsurprisingly, the super-powered cop simulator, Crackdown, was the number one selling game, likely propelled to that position because of the promised Halo 3 Beta ticket. Nintendo first-party titles continued to dominate the Wii with Wii Play and Twilight Princess coming in second and third place, and Wario Ware sneaking in at eighth. Several other Xbox 360 games continued their strong sales: Gears of War, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, and Rainbow Six Vegas all made it into the top ten. Here?s the complete chart. The dominance of console titles is absolutely obvious: Crackdown (Xbox 360) Microsoft Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) Nintendo The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) Nintendo Guitar Hero II w/ Guitar (PlayStation 2) R...

Microsoft Expression Design Beta 2 released
2007-03-17 12:24:00
Today, Microsoft shipped a Beta 2 build of the new graphics design tool, Expression Desi gn on Microsoft Downloads. Just as I was writing this post, the official Expression website was updated to reflect the availability of this new beta. This new beta does not seem to contain any major enhancements compared to Beta 1 which was a significant leap. Apart from the described support for the Release Candidate version of Expression Blend and enhanced XAML export capabilities to support .NET Framework 3.0, there are no visible user interface changes or changes in key capabilities. Even the accompanying readme file still reads ?Beta 1?. One of the features still lacking is Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file support, which should go hand-in-hand with vector designs. Hopefully that will come before RTM. Expression Design is a new endeavor for Microsoft who?s never produced a graphics-creation application by any standards in the past, that is if you don?t count Paint. One of the key feature...

Microsoft?s 2010: real-time collaboration concept
2007-03-13 22:39:00
Stephen from AeroXP has snatched an exclusive from Microsoft ?s killer deck of concept videos showcasing Microsoft?s vision for the future of computing. This particular 11-minute long video was produced in 2005 and focuses on the scenario of ?real-time collaboration?. The story involves a scientist who was snowed-in on return from his vacation, forcing him to work as well as give a presentation to 900 other scientists all from the hotel room. It?s a story we can all relate to. The technologies this demo utilities includes smartphones, mobile connectivity, cross-platform communication, Tablet PCs, virtual office synchronization, collaborative editing, professional networking (think LinkedIn), VOIP, internet shopping and remote presentations with video. This is also a particularly ?red? concept with most technologies glowing a warm shade of red for all consistency purposes, or perhaps in 2010, red becomes the world?s favorite color.     Video: Microsoft's Vision of 2010. ...

NASA backs quantum computing claim
2007-03-12 14:03:00
The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration confirmed Thursday that it built a special chip used in a disputed demonstration of quantum computing in February. NASA engineers used their experience with submicrometer dimensions and ultra-low temperatures to build a quantum processor for Canadian startup D-Wave Systems, said Alan Kleinsasser, principal investigator in the quantum chip program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. D-Wave claimed to demonstrate a prototype quantum computer during a news conference Feb. 13 at the Comp uter History Museum in Mountain View, California. But industry experts became skeptical when D-Wave revealed it had left the computer at its Vancouver office, then conducted the demonstration over a Web link. "You could characterize our announcement as being met with enthusiasm from industry and skepticism from academia," D-Wave CEO Ed Martin said in an interview Feb. 27. But he said the event served as proof of concept of t...

Highlights of Windows Vista Week
2007-03-09 19:51:02
Over the last week or so, our two "TV stations" - Channel 9 (for developers) and Channel 10 (for power users) - have been running a series of videos around Wind ows Vista . I thought I'd quickly highlight some of them: Robert Fripp and the Windows Vista soundscapes: this is classic Channel 9 - a documentary-style video that shows the process leading to the Windows Vista startup sound. Mellow, ambient, ephemeral. I love Fripp's work - Equatorial Stars is a particular recommendation of mine (a collaborative project that he did with Brian Eno). Extreme WPF Makeover: this is something we've had hanging around for a while, but it's not had nearly enough exposure. We recorded a fly-on-the-wall video that shows the process Frog Design went through to redesign Radiant's point-of-sale system. It's an interesting introduction to the value a designer can offer - not just "adding pretty graphics", but rather the interaction design work that produces a measurably more efficient applica...
