New Rules for the New Season
2007-09-13 19:06:00
Ah, what’s that I sense in the air? Is it Fall already? Good, let’s do some web-cleaning: New Rule: Japan and tattoos don’t mix. - Tattoos are a hallmark of Western culture, originally to show what a tough, punk rebel you are. The only time Japanese culture should be involved in tattoos is when they’re inking ...

More Evil Things to Type into Google
2007-09-12 21:21:00
Part one is Available here: Evil Things to type into Googl e More searches which Mother Nature never intended! Most of these are handy for finding security exploits on your own site; simply add a string from your own domain’s URL to check. But really, why limit ourselves? If it has an evil purpose, I’m including ...

Evil Things to Type into Google - part 1
2007-09-11 19:55:00
Google hacks. They pop up one at a time on StumbleUpon, Digg, or Slashdot, and some web admins get wise to them over time… and some just fail to get a clue. Here’s the kinds of things you might type into Google if you are looking for sites to hack… or are testing your own ...

6 Signs You’re Not Cut Out For Programming…
2007-09-10 19:54:00
With the IT industry constantly fretting over the lack of skilled developers - at least if the business computing sites are any indication - it seems strange that you’d want to discourage people from getting into software development. But it’s true: there are people which… sorry if I can’t put this gently… the software industry is just plain better off without. Programming is equal parts art and science, and it takes a special kind of person for it. Here’s a list to clip-n-save for the next person who asks “Should I get into programming?” #1. You want a lot of money. - Sure, software companies make big bucks - and that all goes to the CEO. Slinging code pays somewhere between a janitor and a plumber. Currently, if you sawed open the brain of the average IT manager (not a bad idea!) and looked at the part that thinks about human resources, you’d see this: Managers don’t have clue one and don’t care. That&rsquo...

Your Right to Know About Hacking
2007-09-09 20:21:00
Germany has gotten itself into the spotlight lately with the new computer crime law. The law is so broad and vague that almost anything to do with software could be considered a violation. Since it addresses the intent of usage, it can apply to any program. The text editor I type this in could be ...

A Guide to Linux Package Systems
2007-09-08 21:30:00
Newcomers to Linux frequently voice some confusion over the various software package formats. There’s a lot of available research out there, but here’s a quick user-friendly guide. What is a package system? - Just a way to install a program! Instead of providing a source code tarball and expecting the end user to know what to ...

iPhone - What?s wrong with a discount?
2007-09-07 22:19:00
For all the preaching that proprietary tech fans do about free enterprise and capitalist commerce, they sure don’t seem to be too happy with the end effects. It was kind of alarming to see the backlash of iPhone customers against Apple, who dropped their price for the new iPhone by one-third yesterday. But wait a minute, ...

Ideas for New Life Forms
2007-09-06 19:49:00
Slashdot recently carried the story of how scientists are getting very close to creating artificial life forms. Panic and cite bad science fiction movies if you want to, but I see where an opportunity could be had, here. If you think intellectual property is a hassle, wait until you see patented life forms coming to a ...

New Rules Again, Because I Felt Like It
2007-09-05 18:26:00
New Rule : Fantasy gaming players need their own personals site. - I’ll be happy to ignore the likely fact that if your life is all about being the Dungeons and Dragons equivalent of a “furry“, no woman would voluntarily have the same area code as you. But as long as your hope will spring eternal, ...

A Revisit to Classic DOS Games
2007-09-03 18:52:00
There’s nothing like a little geek nostalgia trip! We may consider ourselves salty veterans of the information age now, but sometimes we still hanker for those early pioneer days of computing. Many of us had these freeware and shareware classics as our first introduction to desktop computers, running on 286 and 386 systems. The funny thing ...

7 Reasons Why Microsoft is DOOMED!

Their business model is a dead-end. - Back when Microsoft first started business in 1980, software as a commodity was still a fuzzy concept. August?s Report - Summer Slowdown.

Social bookmarking. Seems a new user-driven content site pops up every day. And it seems that now we have 100,000 social bookmark sites, which are not only repeating each other’s content, but the same dumb mistakes over and over again. Everybody wants to be the next Digg, Reddit, or Netscape. What we need is one quality bookmarking site. A site which: Automatically checks other bookmark sites for updates. The same link gets grabbed from site to site anyway, often with the submitter too lazy to even change the headline or the description. So it might as well aggregate all the RSS feeds and run them for you. Yes, we already scraped the 5000 other news sites. Do you have something new to show us? Automatically check the URL for dupes. The dupe thing is serious. No matter if it’s been 1000 years ago, the link gets submitted once in history and once only. An attempt to submit a second copy automatically transforms into a vote for the first time it was submitted. Ditto for lin...

Today is the final day to join in, don’t miss this GREAT opportunity to get FREE iPhone; it would be a shame to lose it just because you were so lazy to write few words for this already too popular blog In the mean time, I want to thank John Cow (not to be mistaken with the root of all evil, John Chow) for making this competition a bit more popular on the last few day… The draw itself would be taped on video and uploaded to this site, it will be available on Sunday’s afternoon, so be sure to visit us back. and if you’re as lazy as i know you guys, you better register to RSS to get updates (*hint* Signup *hint*) No, it’s not a de-ja-vu, I seems to have nasty problem with Unicode characters in my blog, I’m trying to locate and fix it as soon as possible, bare with me. 8 Linux Distros You’ve Never Heard Of…
2007-08-30 20:07:00
Since DistroWatch was so nice to link to me last week, I figured I’d explore their site and see if I can find anything interesting to chat about. One thing that’s always been interesting is their distro popularity meter, which measures how many hits the index page of each distribution gets. It is not scientific by any means - it tells you nothing about whether people install the distro, merely that somebody clicked a link and visited that distro’s listing. Yet it is taken so seriously by some that there was a recent scandal about one distro rigging the chart by generating false hits. The less said about that, the better! Near the bottom of this list lurks some Linux (and BSD?) distros that never seem to get any news, so why don’t we check them out? Some of these here sound fascinating; perhaps they are underdogs just because nobody bothers to look beyond the Top Ten? OpenLX - A Linux distro from India based on Fedora core. India is one of the countries ...

7 Ways to Drive a Woman Away From IT
2007-08-29 21:00:00
Everybody’s wondering “why don’t more women game, program, hack, or get jobs in the IT field?” Not a month goes by that I don’t see some CNet-fed pundit doesn’t produce another editorial pondering the lack of women in the geek domain. So, from many years of observing the wired world, allow me to present some of what’s causing women to avoid you IT fields in droves. Singling her out. Imagine walking out of your house in the morning and three women outside immediately point at you and scream “Look! It’s a MAN!” “OMG! Where? Where?” “Jesus, you’re right!” “Lemme see! Does it have a beard?” Yes, it’s easy to say you’d be flattered by the attention, but tell me with a straight face that it wouldn’t freak you out after a while. Left handed compliments. “You code pretty good… for a girl.” “Oh no, I’ve been fragged by a girl!” &ld...
