Candidates for the Technology Darwin Awards
2007-08-28 19:15:00 The Darwin Awards are normally handed out to people who manage to end themselves or their ability to participate in the gene pool in some spectacularly idiotic way. But technology companies have some serious Darwinian impulses as well, and we’ve seen many examples of this over the years. If there were a competition for an all-time IT Darwin Award, my list of candidates might look something like this… Note that these aren’t just run-of-the-mill business failures in the computer industry. these are specifically companies that died or are just about dead through their own massive stupidity. Hence, a Darwin Award. #1. The Amiga - The Amiga stands forever in history as the Marilyn Monroe of computers - it was in the prime of its life, had everything in the world going for it, and flat-out committed suicide. Specifically, Commodore computers committed suicide by being mismanaged into the ground right after buying the Amiga Corporation. The Internet is still wailin... 8 Notes to Self on Internet Etiquette
2007-08-27 16:53:00 Here’s some little reminders I’m jotting down (what else are blogs for?) as reminders of what not to do in the future. #1. When notifying someone of tragic news by email, be sure your font is set to something besides Comic Sans-Serif bold. It just doesn’t look right. #2. Do not use LOLCATS jokes in real-life. Most ...
Most people still don’t know about them yet. Ordering your lunch at the drive-through window with “I C4n H4z CHEEzburGER?”, for instance. #3. When you’re at an Internet cafe or other public-access point and you spot someone having a Blue Screen day, do not burst into laughter as you walk by because you run a Linux box at home that has an uptime measured in years. Even if it really, truly is funny. #4. Quit being surprised every time you hear about a new sex fetish you’ve never heard of. Get used to the fact that the human race, currently at 6.3 billion, has 6.3 billion ways to enjoy sex, and some of those ways will invo... More About: Etiquette , Notes
Windows users: Get Ready for a Long Weekend
2007-08-25 22:20:00 If you have Windows Vista or Windows XP and you’ve been having problems like not being able to run games or get updates, it’s because the Windows Genuine Advantage server is down and won’t be back up until Tuesday. This is causing every Windows install that happens to check in to be marked as counterfeit. The discussion on the Microsoft forums has not been kind. As you might expect, the “U-word” Ubuntu has been bandied about. The real confusion is when users don’t know what’s going on, and so they try to reinstall, scan for viruses, or try to fix the problem themselves. Getting on the phone with tech support causes even more confusion. One poster hinted: “for the XP version there is a download available that will validate you without having to use the validation server - as long as you don’t try and use windows update for XP since that uses the the validation server when you log-in to the Internet update site.” But so... DBPedia - a New Way to Play with Wikipedia
2007-08-24 19:29:00 Programmable Web has announced the availability of a new API for automating queries to Wikipedia . That may not sound very exciting, but stay with me - it gets better. The API can be used to query Wikipedia using SQL-like queries. OK, so what can it do? The docs page lists many new possibilities. For instance, you can use it to perform “smart searches”. The Leipzig query builder gives ready examples, for finding all the tennis players from Moscow or all the sitcoms set in New York City. Making your own query requires you to understand SQL, though. At the time of this posting, the query engines of Berlin, OpenLink, and Free Text Search all seem to be having database errors, probably because of all the heavy traffic they’re getting. But the upshot is that this can enable webmasters (and bloggers) to automatically include tables, data sets, and other gizmos in the body of a post without having to do the grunt work. This will look something like the infobox temp... More About: Play
The 10 ?Geek? Movies That Should Never Have Been: part 2

The 10 “Geek” Movies That Should Never Have Been: part 2
2007-08-23 23:43:00 Continued from part 1… #6. Independence Day - Deserves special mention for (a) having Jeff Goldblum as a geek in it - arrest him now before he does it again! - and (b) the aforementioned Jeff makes a computer virus on his Hack - oops, his MACintosh and uploads it to the alien’s computers. Sure, in a world where you can’t listen to a song made for Microsoft’s Zune on your iPod or read a Unix file on Windows, this makes tons of sense, doesn’t it? #7. Enemy of the State - Nothing would be wrong with this movie, if The Conversation didn’t exist. But since the Conversation does, indeed, exist, Enemy of the State is stuck forever being a blatant rip-off of the concept from an unrecognized timeless classic, with a far less talented crew, bigger budget, and a not nearly as interesting story. #8. Mission Impossible - Yeah, sure, that’s what real-life cyber-espionage is like. Uh huh. Beyond the scene where Tom Cruise does his Spiderman impres... More About: Movies , Geek , Part , Been
The 10 “Geek” Movies That Should Never Have Been
2007-08-22 20:49:00 Right up there with the cowboy, the samurai, the knight, and the Goth, the archetype of the hacker will live forever in history, hilariously misconceived and tragically misunderstood. But of all the historic archetypes, the hacker alone had the distinction of being born in the multimedia age, and hence was the only kind to be laughed at to his or her face. These cases in point: movies which try to get a handle on geek culture… and fail miserably. If you want to know anything about geek culture, start by not seeing these movies. #1. The Matrix - I’m starting with this one because many who consider themselves pretty wired individuals even fell for this shameless pandering to the tech generation. This movie series pretends to be science fiction, while actually being pure fantasy with more plot holes than American foreign policy. No, don’t tell me about escapist fiction. Who wants to escape into a gutter? Why do humans make better batteries than E Coli? Why do th... More About: Movies , Geek , Been

New Rules for the Web - Second Half of August 2007
2007-08-21 22:47:00 New Rule : When Role-Playing Gamers finally take our advice and get out more, they have to leave their fantasy world at home. We’re all very glad for you that you have at last found your place as otherkin in the land of hobbits, but when you’ve played Dungeons and Dragons so much that it starts to change your religion, that’s about as far as you need to share it with the rest of us. You may think you’re wearing a +6 Wardrobe of Coolness, but the rest of us are reaching for our -2 Barfbag of Nausea. New Rule: John C. Dvorak could use a testosterone injection and a Viagra cocktail, pronto. I can remember when Dvorak was the rottenest, meanest technology scrooge around. Dvorak alone could get so many people hating him at once, he could start a riot at Comdex just by walking in the door. But after 25 years of being the loudest troll to thunder across Silicon Valley, he has now decided that he’s a 14-year old girl on MySpace. His blog - did you click tha... Anatomy of an Internet Hoax - Your Thumbs Work Fine for the iPhone
2007-08-20 21:09:00 You’d have to be blind (or not addicted to the Internet ) to have missed the story going around this week about the man who surgically altered his thumbs to be able to operate his iPhone better. Quite a few sites seemed to take it seriously. But the originators have now come out to say it was a joke. Well, no one could fault you for thinking “maybe it could happen”. The Internet, and the world it talks about, is one strange place. But lately I’ve noticed the news feeds taking on a more drastic tone. It seems that anybody can say anything and have somebody believe them. The iPhone thumbs story had a whiff of satire to it, for several reasons. The iPhone just came out and has had a massive amount of media frenzy around it. In these days of plastic surgery jobs and outrageous body mods, another story about somebody messing with their own design doesn’t raise an eyebrow. And remember the Boing Boing story about implanting a magnet in your finger to giv... More About: Anatomy , Iphone , Work , Hoax

2007-08-19 09:44:00 “And on the seventh day God ended his work which He had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made” Really? It took Linus only 6 days to write Linux?! Oh well, if it’s a blesses day I cannot do anything about it, I’ll have to NOT write any new material. As I write 6 days a week I’ll take Sunday off, and just update you quickly on this week’s top posts and my thank you list of course. So, what did we had 1. When should you say NO to money
2007-08-19 08:29:00 I’m must admit, I’m a greedy bastard, I love life and life costs money. during my 7 months of blogging I’ve discovered many ways to make money online, there’s Text-link-ads, Google Adsense, PayPerPost,LinkWorth and many more all of those will probably generate you money without any work from your side (except the actual blogging of course). When offered money I always say the more the merrier, but is it always true? Just the other day I got offer for $25 from a new video site calling me to VideoCam (or webcame) myself responding to some stupid video about taxing. Here’s my list of Pro and Cons Pro: 1. it’s Money ! yey! Cons: 1. the subject is not my field of expertise, in fact I would very much prefer to leave it all to my accountant. 2. I HATE recording myself, I feel like a complete idiot doing that 3. Someone can find it YEARS later and use it against me (you may never know what you’ll do in the future it always helps to be a little...

Hey Microsoft! Just Make Your Own Linux Distro!
2007-08-18 21:54:00 Good old Mad Penguin has gotten onto Digg and Slashdot recently with its prediction of the coming divide in the Linux community, due to the recent Microsoft partnerships with Novell SUSE Linux, Xandross, and Freespire. Rather alarmist of them, I’d say. The simple fact is, less has changed with the Microsoft deals than meets the eye. In the first place, we have already seen Red Hat, IBM, Mandriva, and Novell SUSE do business in the Linux market for quite some time. There’s been the usual scuffles in the Linux camp over it, but nothing that has proven to be a huge fracture. The GPL license states, plain as day, that anybody can sell GNU/Linux. You can; I can. You have to bring something heavier to the table than just remastering a few tarballs, if you expect to do business, but just offer some customer support and you’re in! So, come to that, we could even see a Microsoft Linux distro. Wouldn’t that be an alarming picture? But hey, it’s all GPLed... More About: Make , Distro

What Your Linux Distro Says About You
