2008-04-18 12:40:00 Made by Swedish firm Husqvarna and dubbed the Automower Solar Hybrid, it's mighty similar to an Electrolux robot mower that arrived in the UK in 2005. But with one key difference: it has a solar panel stuck on the top. The mower's makers reckon on a sunny summer's day the panel and internal battery will keep the Automower trimming for an hour On a more typically British day like today, it should eek out 45 minutes before needing a recharge. As we saw during our demo, it then automatically trundles off to its charging dock. Between charges, we watched the mower strut its autonomous robot stuff, cleverly mapping out the lawn within boundaries set by a wire perimeter that comes supplied. We're told the bot mower's good for a 2,100 square metre garden. That's big. Further green credentials come from the boast that 90 per cent of the components are recycled. Runaway lawnmower kills monk
2008-04-18 12:31:00 LONDON (Reuters) - A Buddhist monk from Japan was killed after slipping and falling under the blades of his runaway tractor lawnmower, an inquest into his death has found. The Reverend Seiji Handa, 50, was cutting the grass around his peace pagoda in the English city of Milton Keynes when the accident occurred last August. He got out of the tractor to inspect something but the vehicle, which was pulling a multi-bladed grass cutting machine, slipped its handbrake. The coroner's office in Milton Keynes, northwest of London, said it had recorded a verdict of accidental death. Handa, from Niigata in Japan, came to Britain in 1978, when he began building a pagoda to promote peace. He had tended the pagoda with the help of nuns ever since.
