Disable Snap Previews on web sites
2008-01-21 06:47:00
If you are like me not only do you not want to see those ads that a lot of very good web pages have but you also do not want to fight with pop-up windows that are also ads like the one shown to the left from Snap * Shots. They take up a lot of space in your window and of course most of us are conditioned so that if we see a "+" in the right hand corner of the window we assume that it will function the same as the Windows "X" in the corner of a open window and close it. However, when you click this for one of the pop-ups you get a second helping of advertising. We I have touched previously on how you can block this in Internet Explorer, Opera and Firefox. But if you just want to be done with seeing these ads from Snap* Shots quickly they have a javascript cookie you can load from their FAQ site HERE. I know it sounds a little odd to say the least to tell you to go to the offending companies web site and click on a javascript word but it works and quickly. One thing to remember is that...

Tech Tip: How to remove Norton Anti-Virus and Security Products
2008-01-18 20:16:00
Did you buy a new PC this past Holiday Season which came with the latest Norton or Symantec product installed with a trial version of an anti-virus or security product? Decided that you don't like how much of a CPU resource hog it is and not interested in purchasing it, but you just can't seem to get all of it uninstalled from your computer. Well you can fight with individually uninstalling all the applications or you can go with Symantec/Nortons removal tool which I must admit does a good job of taking out all the installations. It will remove the following items: Norton AntiSpam 2004 - 2005 Norton Antivirus 2003 - 2007.2 Norton Ghost 2003, 9.0, and 10.0 Norton GoBack 3.1 - 4.2 Norton Internet Security 2003 - 2007.2 Norton Password Manager Norton Personal Firewall 2003 - 2006 Norton SystemWorks 2003 - 2007 Norton Confidential Online 2007 Norton Internet Security 2007 Add-on Pack Norton Save and Restore 1.0 - 2.0 Norton 360 Follow these directions to download the Norto...

Tech Site of the Day: GlobalPandora
2008-01-16 01:00:00
Want to use the Pandora site outside the U.S.? Well with the recent legal problems Pandora has made their service unavailable in countries like the U.K. With that one group has stepped up and offered a site called GlobalPandora that is available for users in those areas that can no longer normally get to Pandora.               All of this not make sense? Never heard of the Pandora radio site? Well give it a listen, it is really easy to use and much better in my opinion than downloading a lot of music if you are a casual listener. Take me for instance I do not own any CD's I would rather listen to whatever is playing on the radio. This is much the same only for the Internet. And the best part is just put in a Groups name, song name or album name and not only will Pandora play songs from those picks it will also offer to play similar music that you might not have ever heard that you may...

2008-01-11 14:01:00
Want a quick fix for stopping the possibility of someone "Mistakenly" visiting a site on the home computer that is not "PG" rated? This fix is easy to make and once done if a user attempts to go to a site that is a pornographic or malicious web site. Its fairly easy to make this change to your home or work Network setup. Just follow these steps and of course if you find it to limiting or do not like it you can always return to your default setting for DNS and let it "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically". 1. From Start Button, go to Network Connections (Network and Sharing in Vista) 2. Select your network (typically Local Area Network) and right click to choose 'Properties'. 3. Select TCP or TCP/IPv4, whichever is listed, and click on 'Properties'. 4. Under 'Use the Following DNS Server Addresses' , specify the ScrubIT DNS servers: 67.138.54.100 as preferred; 207.225.209.66 as alternate.   To go back to your previous setting choose "...

Windows OS 1-7 run on fast PC
2007-12-18 21:07:00
While I am sure you are swimming in possible pictures of the new Windows OS in the works Windows Vienna(Code Name Blackcomb). What I found cool in this is the video below showing the new core kernel of Windows 7 being run after being show Windows 1-6 run on a top of the line machine. Having never seen Windows 1-3.1 in action it was cool. Of course after the disappointment most of us are feeling from the hype for Windows Vista compared to what we were shown before in videos like this ONE and what we finally got 5 years later I am sure that we will see a lot of hype for the latest Windows OS. Of course one could hope it will be something like this. Technorati tags: Windows 7, Windows Blackcomb, Windows Vienna

Firefox Tweak: How to curb Firefox memory leak
2007-12-13 17:39:00
Well by now as popular as the Firefox browser is you would think that Mozilla or the Open Source community would have fixed the gaping memory leak that occurrs when you run Firefox with any amount of extensions or if you have more than a couple of tabs open. This little tweak does not get rid of the memory leak but it might help you control it a bit. Here is what we will be doing. We are going to set Firefox so that when it is minimized it releases memory instead of sitting there continuing to hoard it and become bloated. The first thing you will need to do is open a blank tab like the one to the left and type in "about:config" without the quotation marks and hit enter. Next you need to put the following in the filter window "config.trim_on_minimize" if you already have this setting then all you need to do is choose "True" instead of the default "False" If you do not have this setting then you will see nothing after you enter it in the filter window. This means that you will need t...

Speedup Windows XP Internet connections
2007-12-05 00:53:00
Ever heard of Event ID 4226? Well chances are if you use Windows XP and are a heavy user of the Internet or if you use any P2P applications such as BitTorrent then you suffer from its effects. As of Windows XP SP2 and beyond as a method for curbing certain viruses from spreading as they try to connect to a high amount of random IP numbers. Microsoft limited the number of half-open Internet connections to 10. What does this mean to a heavy user of the Internet such as myself and possibly some of you? Well when any applications that you have running on your PC combined hit that 10 connection limit no more connections are made until one of those 10 slots frees up. A quick way to see if you are experiencing this do the following: Click Start --> Choose Control Panel --> Choose Administrative tools --> Choose Event viewer to open Once you have it open under Event Viewer local you need to choose "System". If you click the Event tab it will sort the Event ID's by number. What you...

Browser Tweaks and Tips: IE7 get rid of double search bar's and more
2007-12-03 12:00:00
Did you ever wonder why IE 7 has two Search windows in it if you have the Google Toolbar installed? Or why you cannot seem to get rid of the one in the top right corner? Well I did and was happy to find a solution to fix this. There is a quick Windows Registry hack you can perform to get rid of the built in search window that IE7 comes with.     Go to your "Start" button and choose "Run". Type in "Regedit" and look for this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicroso ftInternet ExplorerInfodeliveryRestrictions   You will need to right click and choose to create a dword entry under that key: Name it "NoSearchBox" and set it to a value of "1" this will get rid of IE7's built in search box if you would like to add it back later simply go back to the above registry key and change the value under "NoSearchBox" to "0" and it will then show up.       Of course these changes to the registry may make you uncomfortable. If that is the case and you would...

Browser Tweaks and Tips: How to load Opera's blocked content list
2007-11-29 21:00:00
If you are like me and tired of going to sites and having either a Snap shots, intelliTXT, Content link or the like pop up just because I move the mouse pointer over a word that has been associated with one of the contextual ad service. Well if you are using the browser Opera they have built in a quick and easy way to accomplish this. What you need to do is download this .ini file. Then you will need to replace the one that is currently installed in your system for Opera. Chances are if you check your blocked content list you will find nothing in it currently. Here is how you check your blocked content. With Opera open click the "Ctrl" button and the "F12". Choose the "Advanced" tab Choose "Content" on the left Click on the "Blocked content" button This will bring you the list of current sites that are being blocked If you have not added a lot of items to this list already then this fix is for you. What you need ...

Site of the Day: Old Apps
2007-11-29 20:00:00
So the other day I get a notice from my Firefox browser saying that version 2.0.0.10 has been downloaded and installed. I had forgotten that I had Firefox set to automatically update whenever there is a version available. So I think great I am now up to date and so I follow the instructions to restart the browser and get on with things. Well no sooner had I done just that then I start having errors with Firefox. Everytime that I would go to file and click "open new tab" firefox would freeze up and I would have to close it. Anyway I could hardly have Firefox open other than one window and things were not looking good. I decided there must be something a little buggy about this Firefox release and I wanted to go back to the version that I had been using 2.0.0.8. I must have looked for and hour and had no luck all of the sites that had Firefox only had the new version. Then I found OldApps, it had almost all the versions of Firefox that there have been. Also on this site are ...

Tech in the news: New Google "YOU ARE HERE" beta
2007-11-28 19:49:00
Picture credit: Google I am sure we have all seen those helpful maps at the mall or some other larger place showing all the shops etc... laid out and a big arrow designating the current maps location with the words "YOU ARE HERE". Well today Google release something similar for Mobile Google Map for Mobile which is called My Location. See your location on the map, with or without GPS. Save time and tedious keystrokes finding where you are, what's around you, and how to get there. If you have a GPS-enabled device, this blue dot corresponds to your GPS location. At times, or if you do not have a GPS-enabled phone, you might see the blue dot surrounded by a light blue circle (as shown on the right) to indicate uncertainty about your location. Here is a quick video explaining it. I cannot wait to see if thisworks on my phone!! Tech norati tags: Google Maps Mobile, My Location

Vista Tweaks and Tips: Vispa Tweak tool
2007-11-28 18:00:00
So you have been using Windows Vista for a while and there are something's that you would like to change about it but you do not want to dig into the registry just yet. Well Vispa may be what you are looking for. Vispa allows you to easily tweak your Windows Vista for better privacy and security, even system performance. Do a few clicks rather than finding the write registry keys or program settings. Note that the program authors do note that even though this is a stand alone application some anti-virus software may report it as spyware or a trojan. One handy feature of Vispa is that it gives you the option of undoing all of your previous changes. But if you've already manually changed some of the settings included in Vispa, you might want to be careful about choosing the restore option, as it might undo those changes as well.

2007-11-28 12:00:00
Ever get somewhere with you laptop only to realize that you have left your wireless mouse elsewhere. Or the battery is dead in it? Well that has happened to me on more than one occasion. That's why this little gadget is featured today under the "Gotta have" section. The Mogo mouse is small, about the size of 4 credit cards stacked up and will fit in your laptops PCMCIA slot. It also charges there as well when you laptop is plugged in and charging. The Mogo mouse does require Bluetooth on your laptop in order to work. So you would have to have a Bluetooth enable laptop or currently Newton Peripherals is offering a free Bluetooth adapter that you can plug into your USB slot if you were to buy it from them. Here are a couple of cool pictures via: The Gadgeteer and a quick and cool tech video showing the Mogo in action from YouTube:

2007-11-27 12:00:00

Well I have so this quick little blast from the past tutorial should help to make it just a click away from doing. I am telling you this little beauty of a program works and quickly.
