Partners helping fix Vista Software Compatibility Issues
2007-10-23 18:43:00
When chatting with people about the deployment of Windows Vista within their organisation, one of the topics that comes up is software compatibility.  It's a no brainer that their business applications continue to work whilst they are enjoying the benefits and features of Windows Vista.  Microsoft have worked hard to ensure  we had a large number of software vendors ready to offer their software as "Certified for Windows Vista" or "Works with Windows Vista".  These certifications mean that either software is designed specifically to take advantage of new features in Windows Vista or is compatible with Windows Vista. Whilst these certifications go along way to answer questions about software compatibility, there are still bespoke software solutions or legacy applications that might not have been tested by Microsoft to gain the certification.  For businesses in this situation there are a range of tools that will help test the compatibility of applications on ...

Windows Ultimate Extras: Remaining Language Packs are live
2007-10-23 16:06:00
update:   because of a miscommunication, I mistakenly stated that the release of the Serbian MUI pack was held up; this is not the case -- Serbian is indeed available as of today. Barry Goffe, Director of Windows Ultimate , today disclosed on windowsultimate.com that the remaining 18 19 language packs have been made available via Windows Update. The additional supported languages are: Arabic Bulgarian Croatian Czech Estonian Greek Hebrew Hungarian Latvian Lithuanian Polish Portuguese (Portugal) Romanian Serbian Slovak Slovenian Thai Turkish Ukrainian Also, this release includes an update to the lpksetup.exe installation component, correcting issues that affected some customers at installation.  We recommend you download and install this component before installing any language packs; the updated component can be found here. 10 Things You May Not Know about Windows Vista - IntelliPoint Software
2007-10-19 04:22:00
How many of you have hooked up a new Microsoft keyboard and/or mouse and didn't install the included IntelliPoint software because Windows automatically found the hardware?   As long as things worked when connected, I didn't miss some of the features that the IntelliPoint Software added.  But now that I've installed the software with Windows Vista , that's all changed.  The team has added so many improvements in the IntelliPoint software functionality that I thought I'd conclude our 10 Things about Windows Vista series by discussing some of the lesser-known features of the IntelliPoint software.  These features add functionality not only to those who may have problems with the fine print on some sites, but give the hardware more usability for the everyday user as well as the power user and gamer. I'm using the new Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000 keyboard.  If you're looking for a new keyboard, check this out - www.microsoft.com/hard...
Publish your photos to Flickr with Windows Live Photo Gallery
2007-10-18 20:16:00
Today the DMX Team is announcing a beta refresh for Windows Live Photo Gallery that includes the ability to publish your photos directly to Flickr. Based from direct customer feedback, the DMX Team worked with Flickr in enabling support to upload photos to your Flickr account in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Uploading photos to Flickr through Windows Live Photo Gallery is just as easy as it is uploading to Windows Live Spaces. To upload to Flickr, all I needed to do was choose the photos I wanted to upload and hit "Publish" in the toolbar. A drop-down list will appear that allows me to either choose Windows Live Spaces or Flickr as destinations I want to publish my photos to. I of course for the sake of this post chose Flickr.  A new window appeared letting me enter options for which set I want the photo to belong to, what size I want the photo to be uploaded at, and permissions of that photo. Windows Live Photo Gallery will notify you once your photo (or photos) have been up...

Get Tips and Tricks for Microsoft Office with New Sidebar Gadget
2007-10-17 08:20:00
Nathan Weinberg over on InsideMicrosoft has spotted an interesting (and helpful) new Windows Sidebar Gadget on Windows Live Gallery: the Office Tips & Tricks Gadget. The Office Tips & Tricks Gadget sits on your Sidebar or off on your desktop - displaying tips and tricks for Microsoft Office . This gadget is a great way for a user to learn new trips and tricks for Microsoft Office that makes their experience better. I learned how to delete a meeting in Outlook without notifying all the invitees just this evening thanks to the Gadget. Sweet. Once a tip comes up on the Gadget, just click on it and the Gadget will expand out for you to read that tip or trick. This Gadget was designed by Donavon West who was also responsible for creating our Windows Vista Countdown Gadget last November. He is also responsible for many other Gadgets which are on Windows Live Gallery. Donavon recently acquired the Windows Live Gallery plaque, is a Silver Partner on Windows Live Gallery, and is a...
Secure your wireless network with Windows Live OneCare 2.0
2007-10-16 05:10:00
Today, quite a few households have wireless networks that are unsecure - wide open for anyone to connect to. This could be a huge problem especially if PC's in that home are sharing important family files - like photos and documents - that shouldn't be seen by strangers. In Windows Live OneCare 2.0, a new feature is coming that will let users of Windows Live OneCare secure an unsecure wireless network in their home. I decided to give this new feature a try and share my experience. Once I connected to the unsecure wireless network, I launched Windows Live OneCare and was alerted by Windows Live OneCare that I was on an unsecure wireless network and that it can help me to secure it.  I clicked "Turn-on" and started the process. Here is a video demo of me going through the process of securing an unsecure wireless network: Video: Demo: OneCare Wireless Security I'd like to take a few moments to elaborate on a few things from the video. First off: the router I used to test thi...

Windows Live SkyDrive gets 1GB of storage and more!
2007-10-12 00:40:00
Today, Windows Live SkyDrive has received some updates to the service - including everyone now having 1GB of storage. That's double what was previously there. Along with increased storage, the SkyDrive Team has included a few more things worth taking note of: RSS Feeds on Public Folders: Users can now subscribe to an RSS feed for their Public folders. This allows folks to keep track of each other's public files and stay up-to-date with what is uploaded. You can subscribe to our Windows Vista Team Blog's Public SkyDrive folder here. See who uploaded a file: you can now check out and see who has uploaded specific files to your shared folders in SkyDrive.  I have quite a few shared folders which are shared out to large groups of friends - it is great to be able to see which files were uploaded by whom. Add a contact directly within SkyDrive: you can now add a friend via Windows Live SkyDrive instead of having to go to Windows Live Messenger or Windows Live Hotmail. Expect t...

Games for Windows LIVE 1.2 Coming Soon
2007-10-09 09:03:00
This evening, Xbox Live 's Major Nelson revealed some tidbits on an upcoming update to Games for Windows - LIVE for the PC. As you know, several games have launched under Games for Windows - LIVE that allow PC Games to tap into Xbox Live. Last May, I talked about my experience with Halo 2 for Windows Vista and a few months ago I also picked up Shadowrun. While Halo 2 for Windows Vista let me score achievements and add to my gamerscore - Shadowrun goes cross-platform by letting me play with gamers who are playing Shadowrun on their Xbox 360 consoles. Like with Dashboard Updates to the Xbox 360, Microsoft can also update the Games for Windows - LIVE components within PC games such as Halo 2 for Windows Vista and Shadowrun that add functionality and bug fixes. Major Nelson highlights several changes coming with the 1.2 release: Support for offline Achievements (so you can add to your gamerscore when not connected to the internet). Ability to see if your friends are "joinable" in gam...

Submitting Feedback for the Windows Live Apps and Services
2007-10-06 21:07:00
I get this question a lot from folks testing and using the Windows Live apps and services: How do I submit feedback? There are several really good options users can use to submit feedback for Windows Live . I'm going to showcase those options here.   1. Windows Live - Send Feedback (feedback.live.com). Users can go to feedback.live.com and choose from the list of available Windows Live applications and services to leave feedback for. This site is open to *anyone*. Each team has a mechanism internally for taking in this feedback or suggestion as they continue their work. Once you click on a specific app or service - you will be directed to a feedback for to fill out. 2. Windows Live Product Team Blogs. Almost all the Windows Live apps and services have an official team blog you can visit to read the latest from their team about their product. This can also be a great place for leaving feedback. Many of these blogs allow for comments. You can leave feedback and suggestions th...

Giving Windows Server 2008 RC0 a try in Virtual PC 2007
2007-10-05 05:58:00
On top of releasing Windows Vista SP1 to a broad set of beta testers last week, the Windows Server Division also released Release Candidate 0 of Windows Server 2008 . I used to work for a local ISP a few years ago and managed their Windows Server boxes running Windows Server 2003. I acquired skills in Active Directory management and IIS management - although very basic. I really wanted to try out the changes in IIS7 as well as changes coming to Active Directory in Windows Server 2008. I decided to fire up Windows Server 2008 RC0 in Virtual PC 2007.   Windows Server 2008 in Virtual PC shows up on my home network as if it were an actual PC - with a real IP address and all. I haven't gotten around to testing Windows Server 2008 RC0 as a domain controller just yet. It currently sits on my home network serving as a web server (when fired up in Virtual PC). I used IIS7 to configure the server for "standard web hosting" - testing out using Microsoft Expression Web to create web...

Addressing a Windows Update failure after repairing from XP CD
2007-09-28 04:20:00
Microsoft/Windows Update Program Manager Nate Clinton has just posted on an issue we've learned of that affects some users of Windows Update repairing their systems using a Windows XP CD.  The symptom is that some Windows XP customers are unable to install updates via the latest version of Windows Update after using a Windows XP CD to perform the "Repair from CD" function.  The issue does not look to be widespread and occurs in rather exceptional circumstances; it occurs because the Windows XP Repair CD replaces all system files, including Windows Update, with older versions of those files.  Meanwhile, the most current version of Windows Update (which is already present on the system) includes a file that is not present in the Windows Update image on the Repair CD.  After performing the repair, the new file remains on the system and creates a registry mismatch, causing subsequent installation of some updates to fail. Luckily, there is a remedy:  customers ...

Streaming Internet Content with Internet TV Beta to Windows Media Center
2007-09-27 20:27:00
On September 28th, users of Windows Media Center for Windows Vista (in the U.S. at this time) will see a new option under "TV + Movies" - the beta version of Internet TV. Internet TV Beta streams high-quality video content from MSN Video ( which just relaunched with new features and enhancements) through the internet to Windows Media Center .  I got an opportunity to take an early look at Internet TV and want to share my experience. When first launched - Internet TV took me to the Top Picks category. Internet TV consists of 6 main categories: Top Picks, Movies, Music, Entertainment, Sports, and News. These categories have sub-categories or "sections" in which content is divided into: Top Picks: Top Picks are the top picks of content from all 6 categories. Top picks from movie trailers to concerts to TV shows are located here. There is some great picks here to check out like the Halo 3 "Believe" trailer (one of the coolest trailers ever) and the trailer to the upcoming Batman ...

A look at the Windows DreamScene Content Pack Favorites
2007-09-26 08:32:00
Earlier today, Nick and Barry announced the release of the Ultimate Extra Windows DreamScene. Windows DreamScene lets Windows Vista Ultimate users choose full-motion video as their desktop wallpaper.   After installing the final release of Windows DreamScene, I was prompted to download the Windows DreamScene Content Pack Favorites . With Windows DreamScene, you get a standard set of 4 DreamScenes to use on your desktop. The Windows DreamScene Content Pack adds 4 more new DreamScenes for your desktop. Here is a video I created of my desktop PC running several of the new DreamScenes: Video: Windows DreamScene Released - New DreamScenes The glowing Windows Vista orb can be downloaded as a Windows Vista Ultimate wallpaper at the Windows Ultimate website. The glowing Windows Vista orb DreamScene is my favorite. The waterfall DreamScene was shown off during the demos at CES last January. An update from the Ultimate Extras team
2007-09-25 17:52:00
Barry Goffe, Director of Marketing for Windows Vista Ultimate , has posted an update about Ultimate Extras over on windowsultimate.com.  The upshot of Barry's note is that today we're releasing via Windows Update the final version of Windows DreamScene, as we'd committed to doing earlier this summer.  We're doing this in conjunction with Stardock, with whom we're offering some really cool new 3D animated DreamScene desktops.  Stardock has been a terrific community partner in helping us finalize the DreamScene release and further extending the capabilities of Windows Vista.  In fact, Stardock has created DeskScapes, a tool that extends Windows DreamScene by enabling it to run animated wallpapers as .dream files.  These files can be looped video or dynamically generated 3D content, and can even change based on a set of triggers.  The Stardock Dream Gallery is the place for the community to create, upload and share custom DreamScenes with the...

Using a microphone array to enhance sound capture
2007-09-24 21:10:00
Below is a post from my colleague Richard Fricks, a Program Manager on the Windows Vista Audio team, discussing Windows Vista's treatment of microphone arrays when used to capture audio.  If this entry prompts questions, let me know via the Comments section below and I'll pass them along to Richard. Providing a solid audio capture experience is not a simple task.  It requires a holistic approach that takes into consideration the entire life-time of the audio signal.  A weakness at any one point in the path can result in a degraded signal.  Take as an example this recording: This was made from my laptop.  Can you hear all that noise?  It's caused by electrical interference from components inside the laptop itself.  As you can tell, even the physical layout of the components in the PC can impact the quality of the audio signal.  When you consider room acoustics such as reverberation and background noise you may find that the signal that is go...

SP1 Beta release available today
2007-09-24 20:08:00
Today we release the Beta of windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) to a private group of Beta testers via connect.microsoft.com.  Brandon over on the Windows Experience blog has installed and regularly uses SP1 on all of his machines (as do I) and discusses the more notable elements of it.  We'll review some of the changes made in SP1 later this week on the blog; what?s more, our VP of Product Management, Mike Nash, answers questions about Windows Vista and SP1 in a video on Channel9.  Meanwhile, I invite you to read the SP1 white paper we published last month.  We also released today five reliability packages via connect.microsoft.com for testing by selected members of the community.  These packages consist of numerous improvements to Windows Vista based on user feedback, and while they will also ultimately be part of SP1, we're working to make them available before the final version of SP1 is released so that your Windows Vista experience is the best ...

Experiencing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta
2007-09-24 19:41:00
Today Microsoft is releasing the Beta of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 which was announced by Nick White few weeks ago. I'd like to take the opportunity to share my very own experiences with Windows Vista SP1 Beta running on several PCs of my own. I decided to test SP1 on a variety of hardware which allows me to test a variety of scenarios: Desktop PC (Custom-made) running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Laptop (HP tx1000) running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. The most common way the user will get SP1 will be through Windows Update. That is how I installed SP1 on the HP tx1000. Before getting to the SP1, a series of 3 prerequisites had to be installed first (It was 3 for me since I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate, but users who aren't running Ultimate or Enterprise will only have 2 to install since BitLocker is not included in the other Windows Vista SKUs).  I talked to Product Manager David Zipkin who explained what these prerequisites are for. The first prerequisite in...

Nope, it's not a new email address -- it's a new blog.  The team responsible for incorporating speech technology into Windows Vista, among other products, has a new blog called Speech @ Microsoft .  Their blog started just this month and inaugural posts cover such topics as using speech APIs (COM or .NET) in applications and which languages are supported by Windows Speech Recognition and TTS (text-to-speech) in Windows Vista.  If you're interested in Windows Vista's speech recognition capabilities (you did know that it's present in all editions of Windows Vista, didn't you?), then keep this blog on your radar.

Just Released: Deployment 4 Beta 3 - The Next Generation of Business Deskto
2007-09-19 01:49:00
Deployment insiders probably saw this coming, but the recent Beta release of Deployment 4 is a huge step in unifying the converging tools and procedures to image and automate installation of both desktops and now servers in a single console. For current BDD 2007 users, this means with very little extra effort you are ready to create images and deploy Windows Server 2003 and pre-release versions of Windows Server 2008 using the Deployment Workbench. Deployment 4 also integrates with the new System Center Configuration Manager 2007 features for OS deployment and task sequencing. Speaking of task sequences, the Deployment 4 has shifted focus from builds to task sequences, making deployments more flexible and aligning to the way System Center Configuration Manager 2007 performs OS deployment. And as if that wasn't enough, Deployment 4 leverages the new multicasting functionality coming in Win...

Surface computing ? the wave of the future?
2007-09-16 20:54:00
I closed out this week speaking with Nigel Keam, Architect, and Mark Bolger, Director of Marketing for Microsoft Surface .  Both are very proud of their product and have every reason to be. Microsoft Surface is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor designed to bring friends and family together through the sharing of technology.  Users can share photos, play games and complete everyday tasks by using hand gestures, touch or other physical objects with Microsoft Surface.  This new custom software platform runs atop Windows Vista and is a good way to highlight the flexibility of the new OS in conjunction with new hardware and applications designed specifically for Windows Vista.  Although it's maybe hard to imagine all that Surface will be able to do in the future, I have to say that today, even in its infancy, it's astonishing! It all started with the idea of blending the physical and the virtual worlds through technology, because although techno...

The era of Quad-Core is upon us!
2007-09-15 02:48:00
On Monday, Nick and I flew out to San Francisco to attend AMD's Premiere Event announcing their quad-core Opteron processor. With Intel's quad-core hardware and now AMD moving full speed ahead - the era of quad-core processing is here! Prior to the event, we met up with Featured Community members Michael Reyes, John Obeto, and Carlos Echenique to attend a blogger meet-up with some folks from AMD. Michael is from the website HardwareGeeks , John owns and runs the website SmallBizVista, and Carlos runs the website PlanetAMD64. I also had the huge pleasure of meeting Alessandro Perilli from the website Virtualization.info. Alessandro is one of the leading bloggers in blogging on virtualization technology on the web. At the blogger meet-up, we were all surprised by a visit from AMD's CEO Hector Ruiz.   At the Herbst International Exhibit Hall, AMD had several demo stations set up for folks to play with quad-core PCs. Nick had a chance to play Midway's upcoming game Strangleho...

An explanation of Windows Update automatic updating
2007-09-13 18:49:00
The Microsoft Update team has posted a statement addressing the current community discussion on Windows Update's self-updating behavior.  The upshot is that a longstanding procedure in Windows Update requires it to self-update before it is able to recognize that new updates are available (note: WU does not conduct a self-update event each and every time it checks for updates).  This self-updating is done regardless of whether the user has enabled automatic checking, download and/or installation of updates.  It does so in an effort to avoid WU misleading the user to think s/he is up-to-date simply because s/he was not receiving notification that updates are available.  Put another way, WU cannot alert the user that there are security updates available if it is not in the necessary updated state that will allow it to recognize those updates (see "chicken and egg" dilemma). However, we do recognize that we should have been clearer in our explana...

Edit and Share Photos and Videos with Windows Live Photo Gallery
2007-09-06 01:25:00
Along with updated betas for Windows Live Messenger 8.5, Windows Live Mail, and Windows Live Writer - users can now install and test the second beta of Windows Live Photo Gallery. Back in June, Microsoft announced Windows Live Photo Gallery as the successor to Windows Photo Gallery in Windows Vista with a closed beta program. Starting today - anyone can now choose to install and try out Windows Live Photo Gallery. This new release of Windows Live Photo Gallery offers some impressive enhancements over the previous beta as well as the existing Windows Photo Gallery in Windows Vista. First off, users get improved color adjustment and cropping capabilities for fixing their photos. These enhancements allow users to easily make changes to their photos before sharing them. You can now adjust the detail of your image by sharpening your image up or change the levels of shadow and highlights in the image's exposure. Under "Adjust exposure" users now have a Histogram of their photos. This w...
