New study highlights cost savings afforded by deploying Windows Vista
2007-09-05 16:45:00
Those of you involved in deploying Windows Vista to enterprises may be interested to learn of today?s publication of a study completed by Wipro and GCR Custom Research and commissioned by MS, wherein it's demonstrated that running Windows Vista on mobile PCs delivers significant savings to organizations over running Windows XP.  The reduction in TCO (total cost of ownership) amounted to $605 per mobile PC per year, or a 14% improvement on Windows XP.  These savings were realized by employing such Windows Vista innovations as BitLocker Drive Encryption to enhance security, Network Diagnostics for improved troubleshooting, and integrated search functionality to boost productivity.  For further details, visit the GCR website. Organizations may be interested in combining this new mobility TCO whitepaper with the how-to guide titled How to Effectively Manage Your Organization's Mobile PCs. The study also noted that Windows Vista-deploying organizations were abl...

10 Things ? Windows Media Center Movie Browser
2007-09-04 20:24:00
Although many of us have used Windows Media Center Edition, there are a couple of things that may not be that well known -- one of my favorites being the Movie Browser in Windows Vista.  Let's see how it works... Have you ever been in the mood to watch a movie but you don't have a particular one in mind -- and you really don't want to have to go through all the information in the guides to find one that appeals to you?  Movie Browser allows you to see a list of movies that are either playing currently or those that will be starting in the near future.  While using Movie Browser, you can specify the type of movie you're looking for and search using any of several criteria.  Assuming that you have the correct hardware installed to run Media Center , using the Movie Browser is simple.  Open Media Center, select "TV & Movies" and navigate to "Search."  You can search by any of the following: Title Keyword Categories Movie Actor Movie Director If yo...
More details on this weekend?s WGA validation issue
2007-08-30 20:39:00
Further investigation by our WGA team has brought to light more information on the WGA validation issue affecting users this past weekend.  Alex Kochis on the WGA blog breaks down the events of the weekend that caused the validation failure, how it was identified and what was done to fix it, and changes we've made to WGA as a result.  The upshot is that we're working to improve WGA, having learned much from this failure, and the team, with Alex in the lead, is taking the matter and its impact very seriously. Among the points that Alex calls out, one is that around 12,000 customers were affected worldwide.  While I stated on Saturday that "very few customers" were affected -- a poor choice of words, I will be the first to admit --, this by no means was meant to downplay the experience endured by those customers.  As Alex puts it, "one bad customer experience is one too many," and I completely agree.  That's the most important point and cannot be ...

Announcing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta
2007-08-29 16:10:00
Now is the time and the time is now:  let's talk about Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).  Much has been made of what will or will not be included in SP1 and when it will be released (some accurate, some otherwise).  I'm here to set the story straight:  we're in the process of developing and deploying a Beta version of SP1.  This post will describe for you what to expect from that effort and how you can be involved in the process. First, a note on service packs.  As you are aware, service packs are part of our traditional software lifecycle; they?re something we do for most major products as a commitment to continuous improvement.  But, the servicing situation has changed with the advent of Windows Vista , as we no longer rely solely on service packs as the main vehicle used to deploy system fixes and improvements.  The Windows Update online service is one new way to deliver many OS improvements.  For example, yesterday in advance of S...
10 Things - Volume Mixer
2007-08-28 17:05:00
Our "10 Things You May Not Know About Windows Vista" series continues as we explore one of the least-known features in Windows Vista:  the Volume Mixe r .  Although it might not be as well-touted as the Aero interface, you may find it's one of the more useful features available. I'm sure we've all had the experience of working on one application when another application's sound suddenly blasted out your speakers.  It can be disconcerting anytime, embarrassing when it happens during a meeting and downright painful when using headphones. Windows XP had a single control for all sounds, and this controlled only the hardware.  If an application's sound was louder or softer than that specified by Windows XP's volume control, you had to constantly adjust the volume. Windows Vista allows you to choose the right volume for any running application.  It's also very easy to use.  Right-click the speaker icon in the notification area (systray) of your desktop, ...
Understanding how multimedia playback moderates network transfer speeds
2007-08-27 20:17:00
Mark Russinovich, one of our Technical Fellows and a prominent member of the Windows community, posted today on a topic that's received much discussion in the past few days -- that being the manner in which Windows Vista throttles network traffic on gigabit Ethernet networks when the user is engaged in multimedia playback. As Mark puts it, "many people have correctly surmised that the degradation in network performance during multimedia playback is directly connected with mechanisms employed by the Multimedia Class Scheduler Service (MMCSS), a feature new to Windows Vista."  This throttling of network traffic is mainly apparent on networks with infrastructure allowing gigabit throughput and is experienced by a user receiving, as opposed to sending, data. The explanation is quite technical and rather esoteric, but the gist is that when receiving data on faster networks, the number of system interrupts is increased and because network-driven system interrupts are handled at high...

How to Download the Localized Version of Windows Vista Hardware Assessment
2007-08-27 04:53:00
Hello Windows Vista Team Blog readers, We've heard that some of you are very interested in getting the localized version of the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment 2.1 but was not sure how the download process works for this globalized integrated download. To clarify, the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment 2.1 is available in any of the SEVEN languages from a single download (not just English). That includes North American English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.  No more hunting around for 2 different localized versions of the download. This is especially convenient for those of you who are multi-lingual in US, Europe and Latin America!!  Here's how the download and installation process work: Download the globalized integrated version of the tool here (please ignore the fact the language field says English, trust me, it has all 7 localizations in it :-) ):  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=.. .
Addressing WGA validation issues
2007-08-26 06:39:00
Earlier today (25 August) we began receiving reports of Windows Vista customers running genuine systems but experiencing failures when attempting a Windows Genuine Advantage validation.  This situation has since been resolved and validations are now being processed successfully.   We've since learned that very few customers were affected.  Sr. Product Manager Alex Kochis and a team of engineers have been working on the issue and has blogged about it to keep customers up-to-date.  Customers who received an incorrect validation response can fix their system by revalidating.  I'd encourage anyone who received a validation failure since Friday evening to visit this site now; after successfully revalidating, any affected system should be rebooted to ensure that genuine-only features are restored. Alex will be updating his blog with information as more information comes to light.

Happy Birthday Windows Media Center
2007-08-25 09:27:00
Windows Media Center Program Manager Charlie Owen highlights that this year Windows Media Center celebrates its 5th anniversary on September 3rd. With Windows Media Center's upcoming birthday, Ed Bott decided to take the opportunity to celebrate the event by writing about how Windows Media Center has taken over his living room.  Ed takes three pages to describe setting up Windows Media Center in his living room and his experiences using it. Ed's goal was to turn Windows Media Center into a centralized hub for all his digital photos, music and video - consolidating his data into a single digital entertainment point within his house. Those interested in Ed's specs and pricing for his Windows Media Center set up - he's posted them here. I'm going to follow in celebrating Windows Media Center's 5 year anniversary just like Ed by posting about my very own Windows Media Center set-up I have in my living room. My Windows Media Center PC is a custom PC by Velocity Micro called ...

Guidance and Tools to Help Manage a Windows Vista Desktop Service
2007-08-23 21:45:00
Hi,   I'm Jeremy Chapman and I try to make the lives of IT staff and management easier by creating free Solution Accelerator tools and guidance for challenging IT projects and services. We?ve just released the another piece in a great lineup of Solution Accelerator offerings for Windows Vista , the Windows Vista Service Life-Cycle Management guide. This is the newest addition to our Windows Vista accelerators, including the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment, Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007, Windows Vista Security Guide and the Data Encryption Toolkit for Mobile PCs.     In my consulting days before joining Microsoft, I used to help companies achieve ISO certifications and what I always preferred was seeing actual service and management recommendations and sample deliverables required to achieve the certification, as opposed to a list of requirements. This guide is great because it makes all the concepts you read...

New Application Compatibility training available
2007-08-22 20:19:00
When we talk about application compatibility for our large customers, it goes beyond making sure the latest game or end user application works. Our enterprise customers sometimes have hundreds of thousands of PCs to manage. That means a lot of different applications, from many different companies, some custom and some customized. To help these customers we created a suite of enterprise tools called the Application Compa tibility Toolkit (see my earlier post), and also worked with partners to create a service called the Application Compatibility Facto ry (see here).   One thing you may not know is that we also have a team of specially trained consultants who work with customers on some of these very large deployments. We try to make sure all our customers can take advantage of the team's knowledge, so we send them to events like TechEd or IT Forum and they contribute significantly to the content you find on TechNet and MSDN. Unfortunately it's not...

2007-08-21 02:10:00
Hi all,   Whether you are seriously considering moving your desktops to Windows Vista or just simply contemplating about it, I highly encourage you to grab your favorite latte or beverage, sit back and read about this great story ? one that illustrates how an IT pro had become an instant hero in this company.   Meet Sumeeth Evans - IT Manager of the Collegiate Housing Services (CHS).  Situated just about 2 hours south of the Great Lake Michigan, CHS manages student housing programs for 27 post-secondary campuses in 13 states across the nation.  Late last year (2006), Sumeeth started planning for migrating his company?s computers to Windows Vista but estimated that it could cost $76,000 to get the job done ? he assumed that most of his Windows XP machines might not support Windows Vista due the hardware requirements.  Fortunately, he joined the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment beta program and found out after using this assessment tool that 70% of his 3-yea...

Use Windows Live Mail to read RSS feeds in Windows Vista
2007-08-20 07:41:00
A lot of people ask me what my RSS feed reader is. They are usually shocked when I say Windows Live Mail . That's right. Windows Live Mail is my main RSS feed reader. Let me explain. Windows Live Mail utilizes the IE7 RSS feed store in Windows Vista . Internet Explorer 7 brings fourth the Windows RSS Platform. The Windows RSS Platform introduces a Common Feed List in which Windows Live Mail takes advantage of. Read about the Windows RSS Platform here from Walter, Program Manager on the IE Team. Nick blogged back in September of Newsgator taking advantage of the Common Feed List just like Windows Live Mail does today. The Windows RSS Platform is designed in such a way that developers can create apps that read, add, and delete from the Common Feed List. Windows Live Mail taps into the Common Feeds List allowing you to read manage and read your RSS feeds. Any feed subscribed to in IE7 automatically appears in Windows Live Mail. Your RSS feeds are displayed in sepa...

Final Microsoft Office Outlook Connector Now Available
2007-08-15 10:06:00
Today, the Microsoft Office Outlook Team has made the new version of the Microsoft Outlook Connector Beta available for download. That means no more "beta". Download: Microsoft Office Outlook Connector With all the responses on my post announcing the beta a few months ago, I figured this announcement will be of interest. The final build number is 12.0.4518.1058. If you don't see that build number in the About window for the Outlook Connector, then you're not yet running the final version. The Microsoft Office Outlook Connector lets you sync your Windows Live Hotmail account up with Outlook 2003 and 2007. Remember, in order to sync your Calendar you need to be a paid subscriber of MSN Premium, Office Live Essentials, or Office Live Premium to get that added functionality with this release. If you are not a paid subscriber of these services, you will see an error in syncing your calendar in Outlook but you will be about to sync up you email messages and contacts just fi...

How I produce my videos with Windows Vista
2007-08-14 01:05:00
As you probably already noticed, I've been doing quite a bit of posts that include video demos of devices and software in my posts. A few folks have asked me how I produce these videos and I'd like to outline the exact process I use in producing these videos for a blog post. For software demos (like my recent Windows Live SkyDrive demo) I use Camtasia Studio 4 to capture my screen and I publish out to a WMV file I then upload to MSN Soapbox. However when shooting actual footage of me demoing a device (like the Fingerprint Reader) or events coverage (like WinHEC 2007) - I have a pretty standard step-by-step process I use every time I shoot video. First off: I always shoot video in HD (1080i specifically). Secondly: in grabbing and editing video I shoot of my digital camcorder, everything I use is a feature that ships in Windows Vista .  Let's take a look at my step-by-step process to see what I mean: Step 1: I shoot the video using my Sony HDR-HC3 HDV Handycam which shoots i...

Store your files in ?the cloud? with Windows Live SkyDrive
2007-08-09 18:56:00
Today Microsoft is announcing the final product name for what was previously known as Windows Live Folders. Windows Live SkyDrive gets not only its final product name but also a few new features and enhanced UI reflecting changes coming across many of the Windows Live services including Windows Live Spaces. So what's Windows Live SkyDrive? Windows Live SkyDrive is a brand new Windows Live service that gives users 500MB of web space for the storing and sharing of files. Think of it as a personal "harddrive" on the internet - or "the cloud". By default, you get several protected directories which you can store your files in. These directories are completed protected from the public. Only you can view them. However, Windows Live SkyDrive allows you create or choose specific folders to share with everyone (Public folders) or specific people on your Windows Live Contacts list. You can set specific permissions for those viewing your folders as well - such as someone who can contribute (...

Windows Vista Security Center
2007-08-08 01:56:00
In a recent meeting with my colleagues Mike Burk, a Security Center Program Manager, and Austin Wilson, a Director from Windows Client Marketing, I had the opportunity to find out more about how and why the Windows Vista Security Center evolved.  If you've used Windows Vista, I?m sure you've noticed that the Firewall, Automatic Updating, Antivirus, Antispyware, Internet Security Settings and User Account Control settings are all located in one easily accessed place:  the Security Center. Although the Security Center was originally introduced with Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista has improved on almost every feature found there.  A lot more "under the covers" features have been included for Windows Vista.  If any of these safeguards are out of date or in an unsecure state, the Security Center will warn you so that you can make adjustments or changes. Some of the other improvements to the Windows Vista Security Center include: Showing the status of software de...
Building your family tree with Family.Show
2007-08-08 00:58:00
A few weeks ago Tim Sneath, who is a Group Manager and Evangelist at Microsoft, posted about Family .Show which caught my eye. I decided to give it a try. Family.Show is a genealogy application built on the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) by a company called Vertigo. Family.Show is a very slick application for building your family tree and tracking your own family history. Tim Sneath also points out that Family.Show is an excellent example of WPF in a "complex, realistic" scenario for developers to take a look at.  In giving Family.Show a try - I discovered I really would like to know more about my family history. I had such a great experience with it I decided to create a small video demo of how Family.Show works in managing and tracking your family tree: Video: Demo: Family.Show Forgive the video's abruptness and pace. I didn't want to bore you with filling out a complete family - rather simply to highlight how easy it is to create your family in Family.Show. The...

Online Photo Backup with Windows Live OneCare 2.0
2007-08-04 08:24:00
In my previous demo of Windows Live OneCare 2.0 (beta) I was pretty general about its features. But I'd like to dive a little deeper into some of the enhancements and features coming with Windows Live OneCare's next major release. Coming with Windows Live OneCare 2.0 will be a brand new way to backup your most important and precious digital photos called Online Photo Backup . With Online Photo Backup you get 10GB of online storage to store your digital photos. Take a look at this small demo I made showcasing Online Photo Backup: Video: Online Photo Backup with Windows Live OneCare 2.0 Making sure your digital photos are backed up is a high priority for Microsoft and the Windows Live OneCare Team. A user could have many years worth of digital memories stored on their PC and if that PC crashes, those memories are lost. Of course you can back those photos up to another PC, or a DVD but those don't come entirely risk-free. Backing up to another PC doesn't mean that PC won't fail a...
Using fingerprints to log in to Windows Vista
2007-08-01 09:59:00
I've been itching to demo this neat little gadget for a while now. A few months ago, I purchased the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader. The Microsoft Fingerprint Reader allows you to replace your standard Windows logon (Username and Password) with your fingerprint. And it works absolutely fantastic with Windows Vista . Anyway, I'll let the demo do the talking: Video: Demo: Microsoft Fingerprint Reader on Windows Vista You can quickly manage your credentials through the software that ships with the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader called DigitalPersona. If you hold your finger down on the fingerprint reader you will get a "One Touch Menu" pop up in the lower right-hand side of your screen giving you all the options you need to manage your credentials. To manage your logons to various websites, you have a Password Manager that lets you edit the profiles for specific websites you use the fingerprint reader to login. Using the DigitalPersona software, you are able to import and export data ...

Hands-on with Certified for Windows Vista Devices
2007-07-28 01:44:00
I've got a couple of reviews on some Certified for Windows Vista devices I'd like to highlight from some friends of mine. DCVIEWS has published its review of the Nikon D40x. The D40x is Nikon's consumer friendly DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) digital camera with quite a punch. I own the original Nikon D40 (no "x") which is still impressive even for a first release. The Nikon D40x takes 10 megapixel photos while my D40 takes only 6 megapixel photos. The D40x also offers taking photos at a higher resolution that my D40. Read the review from DCVIEWS for a more detailed analysis of the Nikon D40x. You can also head over to Nikon's D40x website to check out the feature and tech specs on the camera. Andre Da Costa has a pretty extensive review on the Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000 keyboard and mouse. Andre notes the Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000's tight integration with Windows Vista specifically with Windows Media Center.  The Wireless Entertainment De...

10 Things - Using BitLocker, even without a TPM
2007-07-26 20:15:00
While you may have heard of BitLock er, what you may not know is that you don't need Trusted Platform Module to use it on your system. BitLocker Drive Encryption is a new security feature integrated into the Windows Vista operating system that provides considerable protection to the OS and data stored on the operating system volume.  BitLocker ensures that data stored on a computer running Windows Vista remains encrypted even if the computer is tampered with when the operating system is not running.  This helps protect against "offline attacks" -- those made by disabling or circumventing the installed operating system, or by physically removing the hard drive to attack the data separately.  In other words, attacks made when the system is not running. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption provides increased security by encrypting everything on your hard drive: data, programs and even Windows itself.  When you use BitLocker, your system is more difficult to ...

Sting! The biggest software counterfeiting bust in history
2007-07-24 21:00:00
[This is a post originally penned by Alex Kochis over on the WGA blog.]  Earlier today the Chinese Public Security Bureau and the FBI announced the largest bust of counterfeit software manufacturing or distribution ever.  The bust took place in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong and includes arrests that took place over the last couple of weeks.  While the value of the software actually seized is estimated at about five hundred million dollars, we're estimating that the value of software produced and distributed over the last few years by this particular group is closer to two billion dollars. Beyond the sheer size of the bust, the most exciting aspect for MS' WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) team is knowing that WGA played a role in it.  More than 1,000 customers in 12 different countries who had purchased counterfeits from this particular source used WGA to learn their software was counterfeit, submitted the counterfeits to Microsoft, and forensic and ...

10 Things - Maximizing Sidebar Gadgets
2007-07-24 00:25:00
Many PC OEMs ship Windows Vista computers with Windows Sidebar enabled, usually only displaying the simple clock, photos and RSS feed gadgets.  You may've found that they install their own home-grown gadgets to show off additional features or apps installed on the PC, or as sales tools for other products.  You may even have turned off the Sidebar because you already have a clock in the systray and you use other ways to check RSS feeds. If so, you're missing out, as there's a Windows Sidebar gadget for almost anything you might want:  PC utilities, music, messaging, traffic reporting, searching or just a quick game can be yours with a click of the mouse.  If you haven't taken the time to explore gadgets beyond those loaded by default, take a minute to right-click the Sidebar and select 'Add Gadgets .'  From there, click 'Get More Gadgets Online' -- you?ll find over 1000 different gadgets available for download. There are still other ways to find gadget...

10 Things - Windows Explorer Has a New Preview Pane
2007-07-13 10:39:00
Happy Friday the 13th! Continuing in the vein of maximizing your Windows Vista experience via little-known pointers:  Although you've probably already noticed Internet Explorer 's Quick Tabs and Preview Pane , you may not be aware that Windows Explorer also has its own Preview Pane that extends beyond the live icons you may have noticed when navigating folders in Windows Explorer.  Different than Windows XP's individual menus, toolbars, Navigation Pane and Task Panes, Windows Vista has merged them all into a single interface -- take a look: The Windows Explorer Preview Pane lets you preview the contents of all media or documents in a file without opening the individual file itself.  The Document Explorer, Music Explorer and Picture Explorer all provide an optional Preview Pane. If a program supports this feature (such as Office 2007), you'll be able to browse views of various docs or a couple of seconds of media content without even opening the file. ...
