Feds Bust Credit Card Counterfeiting Ring
2007-07-10 23:24:00 A modern-day numbers and counterfeiting ring has been busted in Florida. According to the Secret Service, the numbers in question are stolen credit card numbers, and the counterfeiting is the production of actual credit cards using the stolen numbers. On Monday, the Secret Service announced the arrests and indictments of four Cubans, on charges of aggravated identity theft, counterfeit credit card trafficking, and conspiracy. They were identified as Miguel Alegria, 46, of Hialeh, Florida; Raynier Pupo, 22, of Miami; Ariel Montero, 32, of Aventura; and Javier Padron-Bravo, 35, also of Aventura. The Florida operation -- which is said to have counterfeited some 200,000 credit cards -- was only part of an international outfit linked by an online payment company named E-Gold. E-Gold Investigation E-Gold, which has offices in Melbourne, Florida, allows users to convert currency into equivalent amounts of gold and silver. The precious metals are stored in European and Middle Eastern ... More About: Card , Credit , Ring , Counterfeiting , Bust
Google Sets Sights on Business E-Mail
2007-07-10 22:43:00 The decision by Google to purchase the messaging security firm Postini for $625 million suggests an acknowledgment by the Mountain View-based Web giant that, before it can fully compete with Microsoft in the office suite market, it needs to beef up its security technology. "Since launching Google Apps last August, companies of all sizes have experienced the benefits of delivering simple, useful hosted applications to their employees," said Rajen Sheth, the product manager for Google Apps, Google's collection of online hosted applications. According to a Google press release, an estimated 1,000 businesses per day are signing up for the Google Apps service each day. "However," Sheth conceded, "larger organizations are frequently forced to choose between taking advantage of the latest innovations that will make employees more productive and ensuring security and corporate compliance." New Rules Could Change Wireless Forever
2007-07-10 18:10:00 You buy a cell phone, load any software you want on it, then choose your carrier. This vision of expanded consumer choices in the wireless world might be a little closer today than it has ever been, especially with reports that the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is circulating an "open platform" proposal for the upcoming auction of the 700-MHz band. FCC Chair Kevin Martin told USA Today on Monday that "whoever wins this spectrum" will have to provide a "truly open broadband network -- one that will open the door to a lot of innovative services to the consumer." He said an open network would mean a consumer could "use any wireless device and download any mobile broadband application, with no restrictions," except for illegal or malicious software. USA Today and other news outlets are reporting that Martin has sent or is about to send a draft proposal to his fellow commissioners. Martin noted that, in some other countries, consumers usually take their unlocke... More About: Wireless , Change , Rules , Forever , Fore
Dell Introduces New Small-Business PCs
2007-07-10 17:20:00 Dell Inc. is launching a new line of notebook and desktop personal computers called "Vostro" that are aimed at small businesses with 25 or fewer employees. "Vostro" PCs will come with a suite of subscription-based services and a dedicated tech support staff, said Frank Muehleman, senior vice president of Dell's small and medium business group. Chief Executive Officer Michael Dell planned to debut the new machines at a "town hall" meeting Tuesday in New York. Vostro, a Latin word meaning "yours," joins Dell's existing product lines, which include Inspiron for consumers, the Latitude and Optiplex for large companies, and the XPS for gamers. Vostro systems will be available with Windows Vista or XP operating systems, but won't come with any so-called "trialware," or sample versions of software that expire after a few weeks or months, Muehleman said. Muehleman also said Dell had assembled a staff of about 6,500 Dell employees to handle tech support for Vostro customers. T... More About: Business , Small Business , Dell , Small , Intro
Is There an iPhone Nano in the Works?
2007-07-10 16:54:00 If you crave an Apple iPhone, but balk at the idea of spending half a thousand dollars on a smartphone, then take heart in analysts' predictions that a less expensive iPhone is on the way. Those predictions suggest a new iPhone might use the iPod Nano 's click wheel interface. One analyst, Kevin Chang from JPMorgan, told Reuters that the iPod Nano will become a less expensive, smaller iPhone at about the half the price of current models, with an expected launch in the fourth quarter of this year. An iPhone Nano, he said, "is probably the only way for Apple to launch a lower-end phone without severely cannibalizing the iPod Nano." Chang said he based his prediction on rumors from hardware suppliers in Taiwan, where he is based. He said that his sources indicate Taiwan's Catcher Technology will be a major supplier of the casing for the new device. Apple's Patent Application Chang also said he is basing his analysis on Apple's July 5 application for a U.S. patent for a "mul... More About: Iphone , Works , There , The Works

Watching Live Earth in HD on Windows Media Center
2007-07-08 01:57:00 Today, across the world, Live Earth is taking place - a huge concert for "a climate in crisis". This event is bringing together 2 billion people across the world with performances by over 150 musicians and presented by MSN. Unfortunately I was unable to make it to any of the live concerts myself but I have the next best thing to being there in person. Connected to a 42-inch LG HDTV (which is Energy Star compliant) is a Digital Cable Card Home Entertainment PC from Velocity Micro. Companies such as Velocity Micro, HP, and others are beginning to ship PC's capable of HDTV with Windows Vista using Windows Media Center. These PC's come with a special HD tuner with a slot for a special card called a CableCard. These CableCards enable HD capabilities through your digital cable service and are available through your digital cable providers (for example I received my CableCard from Comcast). Through my digital cable package I have with Comcast, I get several HD channels that work wonder... More About: Media Center
10 Things - Finding photos in Photo Gallery
2007-07-07 20:44:00 On this most auspicious of days -- assuming you're into that sort of thing -- I figured I'd continue the 10 Thing s You Didn't Know series by highlighting what I think is one of the most universally applicable and beneficial developments in Windows Vista: the addition of Photo Gallery . Millions of digital cameras (~100M, to be precise) are sold annually and if you have a cell phone, you likely have a camera in it as well. All the images we take each year require a place to store them and then find them when needed. Enter Windows Vista Photo Gallery. Not only does Photo Gallery make it a lot simpler to manage your photos, but the great thing is that all users can take advantage of Photo Gallery, as it's included in all versions of Windows Vista. In addition to automatically displaying pictures and videos stored in the Pictures folder on your computer, you can also easily add and remove folders to the contents of Photo Gallery by simply ... Apple Rides High on iPhone Profit Margins
2007-07-04 15:59:00 Apple Inc.'s shares jumped in high-volume trading Tuesday after researchers said the company will reap a gross profit margin in excess of 55 percent on its 8 gigabyte iPhones. Apple shares added $5.91, or 4.9 percent, to $127.17 in an abbreviated trading session that ended at 1 p.m. due to the July Fourth holiday. During the past year, the stock has traded between $50.16 and $127.61, running up in recent months in anticipation of the hybrid cell phone, media player and wireless Internet gadget's June 29 release. On Tuesday, the research company iSuppli reported that a tear-down analysis of the iPhone showed its bill of materials and manufacturing costs totaled $265.83. That means Apple would generate a margin of more than 55 percent for every 8 gigabyte iPhone it sold for $599. Eric Pratt, iSuppli's senior director of tear-down, said iSuppli is still fine-tuning its report and it now thinks the product's margin is more than 50 percent, when accounting for factors like roya... Fidelity Discloses Massive Data Theft
2007-07-04 15:45:00 A check authorizing company said Tuesday that credit, bank account and other personal information on 2.3 million consumers had been stolen, but none of the data were used for identity theft or other financial fraud. The report from Fidelity National Information Services unit Certegy Check Services Inc. was the latest case of data theft that has troubled corporations, the federal government and universities. Court documents filed in a civil case in St. Petersburg allege that a former employee, William G. Sullivan, sold the information to data broker Jam Marketing, which then sold it to several direct marketing companies. Certegy said that the broker and the direct marketing companies were not aware that the information had been stolen. About 2.2 million records stolen from Certegy contained bank account information and 99,000 had credit card information. "As a result of this apparent theft, the consumers affected received marketing solicitations from the companies that boug... More About: Data , Theft , Mass , Disc , Deli
Palm?s Linux Smartphone Set for 2008
2007-07-04 14:48:00 Palm will not ship its Linux smartphone until next year, the company's chief executive Ed Colligan disclosed during an earnings call. The maker of the Treo smartphone revealed in April that it is developing a Linux-based operating system for its mobile phones. Colligan promised at the time that Palm had "system software that we will roll out before the end of the year." However, Colligan said in a conference call with financial analysts recently that the software will not reach consumers until next year. "We will deliver some new smartphone products through the rest of this calendar year on Windows Mobile and Palm OS," he said. "Products based on the new Linux platform will not [arrive] until some time next year." Colligan declined to provide a more detailed roadmap, but did stress that Palm will continue to unveil new devices before the launch of its Linux platform. Palm's Linux software will replace Palm OS 5 that appeals primarily to consumers and small business users. Th... More About: Smartphone , Palm , 2008
AllofMP3.com Is Reborn as MP3sparks.com
2007-07-04 14:43:00 It was the poster child for U.S. anti-piracy crusaders: a Russian music download site that was an ersatz rival to iTunes and was brandished as an obstacle to Russia's entry to the World Trade Organization. Now say goodbye to www.allofmp3.com -- and say hello to www.mp3sparks.com, complete with a similar design, similar legal disclaimers and even a Moscow phone number that is answered by the puzzled owners of a parquet flooring store. Since last week, visitors have not been able to access the infamous allofmp3.com site, which offered tracks at a tenth the rates of Apple Inc.'s iTunes. Its Russian version, allofmp3.ru, says it is closed for maintenance. Moscow prosecutors declined to comment on whether allofmp3.com had been shut down, leaving it unclear if its unavailability was the result of government pressure. The site's disappearance coincided with talks on Sunday and Monday between presidents Vladimir Putin and George W. Bush in the United States. That fueled speculati... Keeping it real
2007-07-04 06:58:00 In a recent post to his blog, Alex Kochis, Senior Product Manager for Windows Genuine Advantage, discusses the on-going work on anti-piracy features incorporated into many of the products Microsoft releases. Part of the job is to communicate advances that keep pace with those of pirates, so his team has updated their How to Tell website -- a site dedicated to helping customers tell whether their MS software is legitimate. The site's updated look-and-feel can take advantage of higher screen resolutions; a further addition is an RSS feed to inform customers of changes to anti-piracy features in our products. Alex also mentions the story behind the holography on Windows Vista DVD's (and other Microsoft product media), which we covered last month. The technology is called edge-to-edge holography and consists of a variety of objects embedded into the holograms integrated into product media, designed to help prove legitimacy of products consumers may pur... Windows DreamScene running with Dual Monitors
2007-07-02 22:30:00 With today's update on the status of Ultimate Extras from the Ultimate Team I thought it would be nice to highlight this cool experience I had the other day with Windows DreamScene. I am currently running a dual-monitor setup on my main desktop PC running Windows Vista Ultimate. I decided to try out Windows DreamScene and see how well it worked with my two 24-inch Dell UltraSharp 2407FP monitors. I tried a few DreamScenes out including the Microsoft Silverlight DreamScene that you can download here. Video: DreamScene on Dual Monitors The DreamScenes worked really nicely running on both monitors. Windows DreamScene is currently a Technology Preview (like a beta) downloadable through Windows Update for Ultimate users. The Ultimate Team is looking to ship the final version of Windows DreamScene later this summer. More About: Running , Dreamscene
Windows Ultimate team provides an update on Extras
2007-07-02 16:39:00 The Windows Ultimate Extras Team today posted a short notice on the Windows Vista Ultimate site updating the community on the status of Ultimate Extras; go here to read their post. To sum it up for you here, the team recognizes that they've been dark for some time on the topic of Ultimate Extras, but want to go on record that they plan to deliver pending DreamScene and Language Pack Extras by summer's end, and expect to disclose a schedule of further Extras releases after that milestone. The reason for the Extras' delay has been the team's staunch devotion to final quality; your feedback, on DreamScene in particular, has been key to ensuring their focus on meeting the community's exacting standards. They plan to add to the Extras line up from then on out to make Ultimate the only version of Windows Vista you'll want to use. And before you ask: no, I don't have any additional details, as the team has priorities that supersede my questions (in other... More About: Update
A Look into the Future of Apple?s iPhone
2007-06-30 15:20:00 The iPhone has launched and Western Civilization is, more or less, still standing. As the dust settles and the frenzy quells, some are looking past the first-generation product to see what adjustments Apple will make for the iPhone's next of kin. 3G is one possibility. One of the criticisms of this 1.0 version is that it uses AT&T's slower EDGE network, rather than the faster-but-less-widely-available 3G. Apple and AT&T are trying to put their best face on this criticism. For instance, in an interview in Friday's San Francisco Chronicle, AT&T executive Fred Devereux said that the company has "optimized the EDGE network" so that "it works really well for that device." Apple CEO Steve Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that "down the road," 3G might be possible. "We cared a lot about battery life and a lot about physical size," he said, and 3G electronics needed too much power and took up too much space. He also noted that Wi-Fi is faster than 3G. The device report... More About: Iphone , Future , The Future , Look
10 Things - Snipping Tool
2007-06-29 18:35:00 10 Thing s you Didn't Know About Windows Vista: Snipping Tool ? It's Not Just for Tablet PCs As I've had several Tablet PCs, the Snipping Tool is something that I've used for some time. Because it's a tool familiar to me, I admit that I was caught a bit by surprise when a desktop user said that he loves the Snipping Tool in Windows Vista and that he uses it all the time. This is just one example of the functionality of Tablet PCs that can be used on computers that don't support ink or touch. It's a quick and easy way to capture a screen shot that can then be pasted into another document or email. Much more versatile than the old Alt-Print Screen option, it might be something that you may have overlooked. If you're using Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Enterprise or Windows Vista Ultimate, you can use Snipping Tool with either a mouse or tablet pen to capture a screen shot, or snip, of any object on your computer. There are several capture ... More About: Ping

Trying out the Windows Easy Transfer Companion Beta
2007-06-29 11:34:00 Robert McLaws is letting folks know the beta of Windows Easy Transfer Compa nion is available at Microsoft.com. You can download the beta here. The beta works on both Windows XP and Windows Vista and is designed to help you move your applications from Windows XP to Windows Vista when upgrading to a new Windows Vista PC. Windows Easy Transfer Companion will work with over 100 programs in transferring over to your new Windows Vista PC. It will also alert you if a program will not transfer or might have problems transferring (transferring without "high confidence"). You can transfer your applications though an Easy Transfer Cable (like the one offered from Belkin) or through your home network (LAN). I decided to test Windows Easy Transfer Beta out myself. I prepped my Windows XP PC to transfer the applications I have installed over to my new Windows Vista Home Premium PC. Just like Windows Easy Transfer Companion, let's call my Windows XP PC my "Old PC" and my Windows Vista Home Pre...
June 2007 Cumulative Update for Windows Media Center in Windows Vista
2007-06-29 01:46:00 Tuesday saw the release of the June 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista on Windows Update. Steven Bink highlights the update and Ian Dixon also talks about the update as well on his blog. The June 2007 Cumulative Update resolves several issues in Windows Media Center including a update to the Digital Cable Card component in Media Center that improves the interaction between the CableCARD, digital cable tuner, and Media Center. With this update programs for enabling the use of Windows Media Extenders (such as the Xbox 360) have been updated. You may need to update your third party firewall to take into account the changes to these programs and enable access through the firewall to your Windows Media Extender. For example, I use Windows Live OneCare to protect my PC I use for Media Center. In Windows Live OneCare's Firewall Advanced Settings, you will notice it lists programs by name and version. Other third party firewalls may do the ... More About: Windows Vista

Flexible Desktop Computing White Paper Released
2007-06-25 18:52:00 Hi folks, for the past couple of months we have been working on a white paper that discusses the variety of both established and emerging desktop deployment technologies in the industry today. For most organizations rich clients have been proven to be the most productive way from a desktop angle and with Windows Vista there are big improvements to make everyone even more productive. Combined with some server based elements, (e.g. Softgrid Application Virtualization, Folder Redirection, etc...) Windows Vista provides key benefits to enhance user productivity while increasing data security and management capabilities. Still, for some organizations, the complexity of their environments have grown as some workers have very limited tasks in their desktop environments yet deal with massive amounts of sensitive data while other workers need full capabilities on their desktops. So the purpose of this paper is to provide an overview and a starting point for a discussion o... More About: Desktop , White , Released , Computing , Paper
Homeland Security CIO Grilled on Weaknesses
2007-06-22 21:46:00 June 20th was a particularly long day for Scott Charbo, the Chief Information Officer for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He was the lead witness in a hearing held by a subcommittee of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security . The hearing was convened as part of the Committee's ongoing investigation into the cybersecurity vulnerabilities of the United States. In his opening statement, the subcommittee's chairman, Rep. James R. Langevin (D-R.I.), emphasized that, from the series of hearings on cybersecurity, it has become clear that "infiltration of federal government networks and the possible theft or exploitation" of government information is "one of the most critical issues" confronting the U.S. 'Significant Security Incidents' The irritation of federal lawmakers was heightened by the release of a report by the Government Accountability Office that concluded that, despite some progress, there were still significant flaws in key DHS security programs. Ohio Data Loss Scope Broadens
2007-06-21 22:01:00 Like many kinds of loss, massive data loss has phases. The phase after "our data is missing but there's no danger" is often "the loss is worse than we thought." The theft of Ohio state government data, first announced last week, has moved into the second phase with the announcement on Wednesday that it includes confidential information for up to 225,000 taxpayers. Last week, Governor Ted Strickland announced that Social Security numbers and other confidential information for all 64,467 employees of the Ohio state government had been stolen. The data was stored on a device presumably stolen from a state intern's car on June 10. The governor said at the time that the device, of an unspecified type, required "special equipment" to be accessed, and there was "no reason to believe a breach of information has occurred." Now it appears that the device also contained the names, Social Security numbers, and other information of various nongovernmental Ohio residents who were on lists, ... Symantec Looks Beyond Security to Risk Management
2007-06-21 21:42:00 Symantec Corp is foraying deeper into the I.T. risk and storage management market, which it reckons as a high-potential source of revenue growth. The move also signals that the company's business is not just about providing security solutions, said its chairman and chief executive officer John W. Thompson. Opportunities in I.T. risk and storage management have been increasing over the past years due to the explosive growth of information that companies have to handle. Based on an IDC study, the worldwide storage software market experienced a 14th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in the first quarter of this year with US$2.7 billion in revenue, an 11.4 percent increase over the same corresponding quarter a year ago. "The growth in information has also fuelled growth in infrastructure complexity. At the same time this growth has multiplied the risks to security, availability, performance and compliance," Thompson said at the Symantec Vision 2007 conference in Las V... Windows Vista Security at 180 Days
2007-06-21 16:21:00 Windows Vista recently passed the 180 day mark since it was made available to business customers. Just as he did at the 90-day mark, Jeff Jones, a Microsoft Director from the Trustworthy Computing group and frequent blogger on security topics, has done a comparison of vulnerabilities discovered in Windows Vista versus other operating systems in their first 6 months of availability. Windows Vista holds up well in this comparison, showing a significantly improved vulnerability profile over its first 180 days of availability compared to Windows XP and the other operating systems that were examined. It?s interesting to note that Windows Vista is being subjected to a greater level of scrutiny than its predecessor, as tools used by security researchers have become significantly more sophisticated since Windows XP was released. Of course, we?re always working harder to further reduce the number of vulnerabilities in our products. Windows Vis... More About: Security , Windows , Windows Vista , Days
Fire Danger Spurs Gateway Battery Recall
2007-06-20 23:56:00 There's a bold new link on the front page of Gateway.com: "Notebook Battery Recall ." Follow the link, and eventually you get to Gateway's somewhat understated press release, in which the company announces that it has "launched a voluntary recall of approximately 14,000 lithium ion battery packs." "Under certain conditions," Gateway says, "these battery packs can overheat and create a potential fire hazard." The battery packs in question were included in the Gateway 400VTX and 450ROG series, which were sold through a variety of channels between May and August, 2003. The press release goes on to say that consumers should remove their battery pack and look to see if it is marked with part number 6500760 or 6500761 (included on a label on the underside of the battery pack). Only those part numbers are affected by the voluntary recall. Benjamin Gray, an analyst for Forrester Research, said in an e-mail that in his discussions with Gateway, the company has only reported four actual i... More About: Fire , Spurs , Danger
