Microsoft web site compromise and partner security

There’s been a lot of discussion over the last few hours regarding a Microsoft website that apparently got defaced. While the domain name has been taken offline, the defacement itself was rather obvious. Users browsing the page were shown a typical “0wn3d by” message with a picture taken of Bill Gates during what was probably his least pleasant visit to Belgium in 1998. (more…)

Acer Passes Toshiba in Notebook PC Sales

With Dell posting the weakest sales of the top notebook-PC makers in the fourth quarter of last year, according to a new market report from iSuppli, Acer is now within sight of second place. Acer sold 3.4 million notebook PCs in the quarter compared to Dell’s 3.5 million units, putting Acer at a 14.3 percent market share, just behind Dell’s 14.9 percent. Acer computers, following a sales increase of 45.6 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, vaulted past Toshiba to become the third-place seller of notebook PCs worldwide, according to a report released Thursday by market researcher iSuppli. Toying with the idea of what kind of private jets will soon hit the market, we stumbled upon the possibility of the iJet by some serious Apple fans. Of course Apple has been known for their focus on quality, and their design aesthetic, so whatever comes out of their stables will be worthy of praise! When they came out with the iPod, the clean lines, polished surfaces, and tight, seamless fit captured the hearts of many. BREAKING: Gunman Shoots One At CNN Headquarters, Then Is Shot Himself

Payback is a bitch I guess? A woman was shot at CNN headquarters in Atlanta, and the gunman was then shot by a Turner Security officer. The man and the woman were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Mobile Phones Having an Impact on 911 Funding

About 10.5 percent of U.S. households have no land-line phones but have at least one wireless phone, according to a 2006 survey by the National Center for Health Statistics. “If people disconnect land-line phones and go with just wireless, it creates disparity” in fees, says Harriet Miller-Brown, Michigan’s 911 administrator. “We’re looking for parity.” Some 911 systems are facing budget crunches as more Americans unplug land lines and switch to cellphones, shrinking the revenue from phone surcharges that helps fund 911. In the new Googl e television advertising system with EchoStar , the purchaser places a bid, and receives a report back within 24 hours. If the bid on Google is successful and the ad ran on the EchoStar network, the report includes such information as number of ad plays, number of set-top boxes reached, performance in different markets, and other information. Google and EchoStar Communications will introduce a potentially revolutionary, automated system for buying, selling, delivering, and measuring television ads, the two companies announced Tuesday. He first discovered a bizarre growth on the back of his neck in 1990, but he chose to ignore it.
