Life Without High Speed
2007-03-20 02:11:00
Was it just a few short years ago that life on the internet began to take on a life of its own?Was it just a few short years ago that I thought that a 2GB hard drive would be all I'd ever need?Well, in terms of the internet, it probably seems like a long time, but in actual fact, I purchased my computer in 1997, just 10 years ago.I thought I had all the bells and whistles, I was pretty proud of my new machine. I logged online and learned how to surf and how to chat and how to do internet marketing.Flash forward ten years and I am still surfing and still doing internet marketing, but I have encountered a problem, which is beginning to be a major problem for me and many others like me. I HAVE DIAL-UP!Everyone seems to be going to video and audio streaming, which leaves me sitting like a dork at my computer wondering what is going to happen and when. I get stuttering voices and pictures on hold and I wait 20 minutes for a video to load which then takes about 60 seconds when it fina...

OpenGL And Linux users You Should Avoid The Ati Xpress200 And Xpress1100
2007-03-17 21:07:00
OpenGL and Linux users you should avoid the chip xpress200 and xpress1100. I have a xpress1100 on my laptop, and I had disappointment to note that this chip does not manage or very little the OpenGL, the consequences?Under Windows the games or the applications that are using OpenGL's 3D functions are performing very badly or not at all, and under Linux you do not have the 3D desktop nor the majority of the 3D applications. This problem with the xpress200 was to be fixed by the xpress1100 but these two chips use the graphics processor unit X300se which is a X300 cut down by ATI(half pipe and bandwidth, very reduced memory) which on paper is ½ to 1/3 slower than the X300 of origin another problem is that X300 in fact is already not an excellent graphics processor unit, finally the true is that the problem really does not come from the graphics processor unit, the fact is that ATI officially does not support the opengl function of this chip. These chips at low prices equip each d...

Quest secures Windows licence
2007-03-15 07:59:00
MICROSOFT, the world's biggest software company, signed its first technology licensing agreement with a competitor almost three years after it was forced by European Union regulators to release the data (from australianit.news.com.au). Quest Software, a maker of database management programs, says it has a licence for network protocols that allow it to develop products based on Unix, Linux and Java network software. Quest can now integrate its products with Microsoft's Wind ows workgroup networks. "This is a powerful interoperability application and we are very pleased to have Quest as the first licensee in this program," Microsoft Europe associate general counsel Erich Andersen says. The European Commission, the EU's antitrust regulator, had threatened to fine Microsoft for not complying with a 2004 antitrust ruling. In the US, Justice Department lawyers say they are "troubled" that Microsoft asked for a two-month extension in making all its software code available to...

Microsoft's Windows Vista marketing may benefit Apple
2007-03-13 08:02:00
The new operating system's hardware upgrade stigma and other Mac factors are pushing some people to consider the Apple alternative, ThinkEquity analysts muse (www.crn.com.au)..Steve Jobs may want to send Steve Ballmer a thank-you note. Microsoft 's marketing of its new Windows Vista operating system could pay off handsomely for the company's old rival Apple."We think Vista is good for Apple," ThinkEquity Partners financial analyst Jonathan Hoopes says in an e-mail. "As people upgrade their PCs, we expect them to increasingly consider the Mac alternative."In a report issued on Monday, Hoopes and financial analyst Michael Lew argue that Apple hardware sales will benefit from the "Vista tailwind," from the imminent release of Apple's new operating system, Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), and from the upcoming availability of Adobe's Creative Suite 3 (CS3)."We think Vista has established a 'hardware upgrade' mind-set among PC users," the report states. "Meanwhile, Apple's strong retail s...

Safe Way To Disable User Account Control In Windows Vista
2007-03-12 08:01:00
User Account Control (UAC) is a feature in Wind ows Vista that can help prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. UAC does this by asking you for permission or an administrator password before performing actions that could potentially affect your computer's operation or that change settings that affect other users. When you see a UAC message, read it carefully, and then make sure the name of the action or program that's about to start is one that you intended to start. By verifying these actions before they start, UAC can help prevent malicious software (malware) and spyware from installing or making changes to your computer without permission. In Windows Vista , UAC and its Admin Approval Mode are enabled by default. When UAC is enabled, local administrator accounts run as standard user accounts. This means that when a member of the local Administrators group logs on, they run with their administrative privileges disabled. This is the case until they attempt to run an applicati...

ITunes still has issues with Windows Vista
2007-03-12 06:57:00
An update to Apple Inc.'s iTunes music software still hasn't resolved some of the compatibility problems with Microsoft Corp.'s new operating system (www.clarionledger.com).The iTunes program is key to syncing music on computers with iPod portable players, and the latest version, iTunes 7.1, comes a month after the iPod and Macintosh computer maker warned PC users against installing Windows Vista until Apple could fix the problems.Apple removed that outright warning from its Web site on Monday and stated instead that the updated iTunes is recommended for use with most editions of Windows Vista . But Apple also conceded that some glitches, including possible corruption of a user's iPod player upon ejection from a PC, remain."Apple is actively working with Microsoft to resolve a few remaining known issues," the posting stated.Apple representatives declined further comment and would not say how much longer users would have to wait for iTunes to be completely Vista-friendly.Apple als...

Microsoft Ad Bucks Going Digital
2007-03-09 08:22:00
Microsoft, the software behemoth and online services convert, is getting religion online—again. This time the software maker plans to shift the bulk of its advertising budget to digital media. That detail emerged when the computer software company’s vice president of marketing told a group of advertising industry professionals at a recent conference that the move will take place over the next three years (www.redherring.com).But one industry analyst cautioned that such a massive shift in Microsoft’s ad spending could send shock waves not only through traditional media outlets, but also among existing advertisers that currently bid for online ad placements.“There is probably not enough advertising inventory [online] to accommodate all that spending,” said Greg Sterling, analyst at Sterling Market Intelligence. The software giant’s readiness to spend its marketing muscle in the digital domain underscores the company’s commitment to the Internet. Microsoft currently spends a...

Apple and Microsoft users differ on age and bias
2007-03-09 08:21:00
Late last year, market research firm MetaFacts dealt Apple 's image a body blow when it claimed that almost half (46 percent) of Apple's customer base were age 55 and older, nearly double the share of average home PC users (25.2 percent).Faced with the possibility that nursing home residents in silhouette might scuttle its iPod ad campaign, Apple said that only about 20 percent of Mac users were over 55, while being tactful enough to add that it welcomed customers from 1 to 100.It might have ended there, with the snickering of pundits and those opposed to Apple's monopolization of "cool," which is to say the online music market. But now Internet metrics firm Hitwise has reopened the discussion by claiming that, based on recent traffic data, "the majority of traffic to the Apple Web site came from users under 45, while the majority of traffic to the Microsoft Web site came from users over 35, with a full 22 percent of its traffic coming from those in the 55+ age bracket."

iTunes fix doesn't cure all Windows Vista flaws: Apple
2007-03-07 05:48:00
An update to its iTunes software for computers using the Windows operating system does not repair several compatibility problems with the latest version, Apple says. "Apple has released a new version of iTunes that addresses a number of compatibility issues with Windows Vista ," the company said in a note published on its site that did not specify the changes for Microsoft Corp.'s operating system. But iTunes 7.1 fails to fix several major flaws, including the potential to corrupt an iPod if it is ejected from the Windows Vista file system using the operating system's "Safely Eject Hardware" option instead of the eject function in iTunes. "Apple is actively working with Microsoft to resolve a few remaining known issues," said the notice updated Feb. 26. Vista users may also have problems with the way display text or graphics appear on the screen in iTunes and contacts in the Windows address book may not synchronize with an iPod, Apple said. People running iTunes on 64-bit vers...

Windows Vista and Picture Metadata - Watch out!
2007-02-16 13:30:00
By Mike DaviesMicrosoft wants to make it easy to label photos with metadata - information such as where the picture was taken and who's in it - but you better be careful before you use the company's software for doing so.Wind ows Vista and the Microsoft Photo Info tool can cause problems with metadata or the image itself.According to one Microsoft Knowledge Base article, "When you edit the properties of a photo to add metadata to that photo in Windows Vista , the software for the digital camera may no longer recognize the metadata that is automatically added to the photo by the digital camera."Tagging the raw files through Windows Vista or the Microsoft Photo Info tool after the codec is installed appears to cause these files to become unreadable in other applications, such as Adobe Photoshop," Microsoft has said in a a frequently asked-questions list for the Photo Info software.Microsoft is letting camera manufacturers supply processing software that Vista can employ when users wan...

Less Is More-Operating Systems
2007-02-12 10:04:00
By Tonami PlaymanOver the years operating systems have been raising their standard in graphics so much that to run a current OS like windows vista, you need a hardware bolstering a minimum of 512mb - 1 GB of RAM. Such requirements are extremely high and limited to only a few.Yes most hardware has gotten faster and cheaper, following Moore’s law well, but the software keep getting heavier with every new generation agreeing with Gate’s law. This is all good progress if we just want to stick with business as usual. Every competitor in the computer industry are tied up in a power struggle, with each one vying for the most sales by offering more and more of speed and overloading graphics.I see this as a blind trail, because no one pauses to asses the situation. What if we take a new look at the way we think we want our software and hardware to be. The One laptop per Child program initiated by Nicholas Negroponte has shed some light on what could be done with the PC. It was designed f...

Microsoft to extend free support period for Windows XP
2007-01-26 04:57:01
AP, TOKYO Microsoft Corp plans to extend the free support period for its Wind ows XP Home Edition software at least one year longer than planned, a news report said yesterday. Darren Huston, president of Microsoft's Japan unit, told Kyodo news agency in an interview that the company would extend the support period on a global basis until sometime after 2010 from its initial plan of January 2009, mainly because of strong requests from Japanese consumers. "It is going to be significantly extended," Kyodo quoted Huston as saying. Huston declined to specify exactly how long mainstream support -- which includes such services as providing updated security functions to users -- will be extended, according to Kyodo, but said: "When I say significantly, it's more than one year." The official announcement of the extension will be made today, he said, according to Kyodo. Huston said that the Japanese market is "the biggest market outside the United States...

Windows Vista DX10 BSOD pictured
2007-01-26 04:57:01
By Theo ValichNVIDIA WAS FIRST to the market with a DirectX 10 compliant GPU. However, it is not obvious that the company will be the first to market with DirectX 10 compliant drivers, since the drivers are continuously leaking through the schedule. We heard a lot of theories and explanations from people inside Nvidia and that info constantly kept changing. During December, we even heard a theory that DirectX 10 is late and is not shipping with Vista and that the API will be ready in March - since Vista was being delivered to businesses and members of MSDN network, that story didn't hang together for long. Wind ows Vista will become a retail reality in a matter of a few days, and the team at Nvidia is working hard on producing drivers that would be able to show DX10 in all of its glory. However, all is not done, because the driver isn't stable yet. Developing DX10 games often ends up with this screen... While running a preview version of DirectX 10 title, several random reboots ...

How do you add new games to Games Explorer in Windows Vista?
2007-01-26 04:57:01
By John SavillA. Even if a game is pre-Vista , if it's known to the http://www.gamesforwindows.com catalog, it will automatically be added to Games Explorer, with varying levels of information. For example, I installed Halo for the PC, and it was automatically added to Games Explorer along with its Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating as, as the figureshows. However, it didn't display the traditional Games for Wind ows information, which shows the machine specifications required to play the game. The level of information provided for "legacy" titles depends on the game's publisher. This ESRB rating is important because Vista's parental controls will lock out certain games if parental controls are set. Newer games that are Vista-aware have a Game Definition File (GDF), which is a piece of XML metadata embedded as a resource in the binary of the game (exe or dll), which also includes a thumbnail used by the Games Explorer.

Microsoft launch may start with yawn
2007-01-22 16:54:03
by By Brian Bergstein, THE ASSOCIATED PRESSHere comes a new Windows operating system from Microsoft Corp. Long delayed, it's the first in several years, so the company plans an enormous marketing campaign to tout the software as a way to get more out of computers. But Microsoft's legion of detractors roll their eyes, calling the new Windows a weak imitator of other operating systems. Meanwhile, technology analysts wonder whether Microsoft's dominance is nearing an end, since programs coming over the Internet are emerging as a more powerful force in computing than software tied to individual desktops.Ah, those were the days. Who can forget the release of Windows 95?However, there's one key difference this time: Back in August 1995, people actually lined up outside computer stores to buy the new edition of Windows the moment it went on sale at midnight.Don't expect that to happen for Vista. That doesn't mean Vista will be a dud. It can't be, not when just about every new PC sold ...

Mysterious online puzzle game leads back to Microsoft

The Battle for the Digital Home: Does Apple or Microsoft win
2007-01-02 22:38:12
By: Rob EnderleIn the battle for the ?Digital home,? the right answer (unless something changes) might be neither. I?ve just finished a review of the top contenders for awards at CES, and while I can?t divulge the winner (largely because I have no idea who it is), I can say that neither Microsoft ?s nor Apple ?s solutions came particularly close. Granted in Apple?s case that was largely because they don?t actually attend CES and seem to believe ?with some justification ? that they don?t have to. Microsoft seems to think they can continue to blame their partners for failures in this space, but right or wrong, failures are exactly that; at some point, I?ll bet either Bill Gates or Microsoft?s board will say, ?Enough is enough? and step in.But rather than talk about what large companies aren?t doing, let?s focus on what needs to be done to capture the digital home, and set a framework for how the products we will see at CES should be judged.

Why Microsoft/Novell is good for Linux
2006-12-27 10:34:02
By Peter Dawes-HuishBeing aware, as I am, of Microsoft 's monopolisation endeavours, coupled with working in a Linux world inherently mistrustful of the software giant, it may seem strange that I believe the Microsoft/Novel l agreement will be great for Linux. But I do. Why? Interoperability between Microsoft and Linux has been one the greatest challenges for software publishers and system integrators in the Linux world. The Microsoft/Novell agreement will no doubt help to bridge the gap and make it easier for software buyers to run both Windows and Linux-based systems. But it is not only integration ? vital though it is ? that I believe will propel Linux further into the mainstream. It is Microsoft's endorsement of Linux, their yielding 'if we can't beat them, join them' attitude that floods Linux in limelight. The market's gaze has never been so drawn to Linux and now is our time to stand and be counted. The Linux world has always been a very volatile and dynamic one. Until 20...

Review: Windows Live Writer Beta Makes Blogging Better
2006-12-24 10:32:02
By Serdar Yegulalp If you're a blogger, chances are you do most of your writing directly in a Web browser. Microsoft has now rolled out a standalone blogging application, Wind ows Live Writer, which not only works with the Live family but with Blogger, LiveJournal, and any blogging system that supports one of a broad range of APIs. So why use a standalone program to do your blogging, when almost every online blogging service out there already has a fairly powerful WYSIWYG interface that runs in your Web browser? After working with Windows Live Writer, I think the answer is pretty self-evident. For one, Live Writer offers a more consistent and less browser-dependent way to blog, especially if you're dealing with many blogs hosted on multiple services. It also provides you with an interface that's not shackled to the limits of what can be presented in a browser without plugins or add-ons. Officially, Live Writer is still in beta, but it is solid enough at this point that I could us...
