Music Performance and Music Education - Can I perform and teach?
2008-01-30 21:31:00 You went to school to be a ?band director? not a ?performer.? You mean I have to do both? Well, yes you do. Well first and foremost, you went to college to become a music educator. A few months back someone asked about how they will stay active as a performer once they start to teach. Well, its difficult at times, but it is possible. For me, I arrive at school an hour early, just to do my daily trumpet warm-ups. It does seem to make for a better day, as I really do enjoy playing. After my hour warm-up, students are already in my room ready for first period. So I get a solid warm-up daily. I play every lesson period that I can (keeps the endurance going) and then try to work on something everyday after school. I try to get a good two hours of practice a day, most days I can do this, but sometimes its not possible. I?m active in my area as a musician, but where I am located??..there?s not always many playing opportu... More About: Education , Music , Performance , Music Education , Perform

Getting Ready To Post The Official First List Of ME Bloggers!
2008-01-29 05:00:00 I had a great time and experience while in Michigan. I got to spend time with good friends and meet new friends and colleagues. I spent a lot time with V. Keith Mason. We have had a number of conversations but have never officially met. The presentation about R.S.S. went very well. I was a little bit anxious about it as it was very ?cutting edge? material -however, the folks in attendance told me afterward that it was a great session. I plan to post a web version of the presentation very soon. I have a number of draft posts beginning to pile up and with the start of the college semester ?off and running?, it may be awhile before I get to them all BUT, I?m planning on posting the current, OFFICIAL list of ME bloggers tomorrow? Stay TUNED! If you are a ME blogger or planning to be one, don?t forget to check out the official repository of ME blogging information from time to time here: http://www.mustech.net/100-me-bloggers In the m... The Motherlode Of Great Music Advocacy Articles
2008-01-21 01:22:00 I joined the International Society of Music Educators (ISME) mid-last year. I did this to become part of a larger music education community. One that transcends national boundaries. As many of you know, I am trying to get as many musicians and educators talking about what they do, why they do, and join a ?global conversation? about our field. ISME is trying to do just that? Part of the ISME website includes a list to a number of FANTASTIC music advocacy articles. There are over two dozen articles written by some of the finest music minds of our time. These articles are free to download and view and you do not need to be a member of ISME to access them. Reading articles like these will provide a real basis for music educators and musicians to be able to answer the questions posed to us as to why music is important! ME Bloggers: Posting Images In The Sidebar Of A WordPress.com Site
2008-01-20 15:44:00 NOTE: THIS ARTICLE IS TO LARGE TO INCLUDE AS A WHOLE IN RSS. PLEASE WWW.MUSTECH.NET FOR THE COMPLETE ARTICLE. Ken asked me a great question about using the new ME Blogger Logos in the sidebar of a WordPress.com site. Although it is easy to post a graphic in a regular post by using the upload featureof a WordPress post, posting a graphic in the sidebar is a little bit trickier. This post will feature a step-by-step graphic tutorial of how do accomplish this using any standard (free) WordPress.com site. In addition, I will include specific information for posting the ME Graphic in your sidebar while having it reference back to the 100-ME-Blogger Informational page located on this site. I will also start a thread in the forums (ME HELP) to work with anyone who is having any problems following the tutorial. Pagebull, Visual Search Engine Worth Looking At?
2008-01-16 17:01:00 I?ve come across a number of search engines over the years, and I?m still by far a GOOGLE fan? but this one, Pagebull, is worth looking into and I find myself using it more and more for certain types of searches. It is fast (if you have broadband) and returns relevant results. The difference, it returns snapshots of each page it returns. You can choose how you like the grid of results returned based on your resolution, etc. Here?s a screenshot for the search for ?joseph pisano?: Another really useful (and totally web 2.0 cool!) feature of Pagebull is the built in integration of multiple social bookmarking and other related type of tools. For example, you can easily add any of the results returned to services like reddit, digg, bluedot, stumbleupon, simpy, etc. You can also choose from a number of informational options like, Google Translate, Alexa Info and ?more info?. 2008-01-14 14:53:00 A few of you have already taken ?us? up with regard to our challenge of 100 ME Blog gers before 2009. I have a few start-up tips for those of you that have already started your own blog and want to know ?what next?. I hope to post a few of these ?tips? every month for awhile! One of the very first things that you need to do is to have at least 3-4 good posts up on your site. They don?t need to be written one after another, but you need to have some relevant content on your site before you should submit your site to the search engines. Without your site being visible to the search engines, people will not be able to find your site, regardless of your content. There are different ways to become visible on search engines. The first way is to tell the search engines (google, yahoo, msn, etc.) that you exists through something called ?site submission?. Another way is to have your site ?linked? to sites that already are... More About: Tips , Site , Bloggers , Submit
FMEA 2008 -Great ME Bloggers Finally Meet!

We?ve been talking back and forth on our blogs for over a year and we actually, finally just met face to face. Happy New Year 2008! Things To Come?
2008-01-01 19:51:00 Happy New Year ! 2007 was a great year for me and mustech.net. I finished my dissertation, gained my Ph.D. and mustech.net reached over 150,000 visitors! This year I plan on reaching 300,000+ visitors. If you blog, you know how very hard it is to be a blogger when you are in a NICHE market such as the readership of this site. I work very hard to provide regularly updated, useful, information. I hope this year to build a community of readers, readers that not only read the site, but actively participate with it and build a store of good information for anyone to find and read here. 2008 Resolutions for this site: Reach an active readership of 300,000+ in both RSS and Normal Readership. Have a cadre of 100 Music Education Bloggers blogging by the end of 2008, therefore building of a community of enlightened, like-minded music educators that are both innovators, sharers of knowledge, and experts in their fields. Francis McBeth, James Barnes, Eric Ewazen, Mark Rogers -So You Want To Be A
2007-12-20 18:55:00 I was at an interesting mentoring session yesterday titled, ?So you want to be a composer??. It featured the very distinguished panel of Franc is McBeth, James Barnes , Eric Ewazen and Mark Rogers -all of the Southern Music company (Mark Rogers, is actually an editor of music and the president of Southern). It was an hour long session that featured all of the composers talking about what it takes to be a composer. It was full of interesting anecdotes and good advice for budding composers? What I found particularly interesting (other than the normal hysterical jokes from James Barnes), was when they answered a question about using notation programs. Of the four, all but Francis McBeth actually used notation programs. Mark Rogers and Eric Ewazen stated that they edit in Finale. James stated that he tried to use Finale but found it not very user-friendly and now uses Sibelius. All of them stated that they would typically begin the composition process n...

Using Skype In The Educational Setting; Skyping Experts Into The Classroom
2007-12-15 00:58:00 Today was a ground breaking day at Mercer High School in Mercer, PA. Today electronic technology met traditional teaching methods in Travis Weller?s 8th grade General Music Education Class. Specifically, his class met song producer, writer, and music industry licensing expert Jason Davis, in his class through Skype . Travis and I have been working on this cross-discipline/field project for a number of weeks prior to today. It was a brain storm of mine, brought in part, due to a similar project I witnessed at Kent University at a lecture/demonstration by Dr. Jay Dorfman, a cutting edge technologist. This project was/is cutting edge and brought together an expert in the field, Jason Davis, face-to-face with a classroom of bright, interested, 8th graders to talk about topics like copyright, the PAL parental Advisory label, trends in music, and the future of the music industry. The session lasted about 45 minutes and went off without any problems.&... More About: Educational , Experts , Pert

Looking For Music Lessons On Any Instrument Locally? Try Click For Lessons
2007-12-11 05:48:00 I found this great service today when a number of my students were looking for current Web 2.0 sites. This online free service called Click For Lessons allows you to look for music lessons, dance lessons, or art lessons by typing in what you are looking for and the zipcode where you would like to have the lesson taught. It?s an interesting site that utilizes two types of partnership agreements if you are a teacher. One is that the Click For Lessons site will market you and send you leads, basically you become a teacher for them. The other is a free listing that allows you to reach 100,000 plus students per month and only charges you for a lead sent to you. Students can look at your page (created on their site) and there is no charge until they actually send you a contact letter. There is no charge for anyone looking for an instructor. It?s free to browse the listings of instructors and view the information about them. When you find an instructor an... More About: Music , Instrument , Loca

Robert Hawkins From Bellevue Nebraska, A Man To Despise
2007-12-06 06:57:00 NOTE: This is not a music and technology related post and is my personal opinion about a current event? What an extreme waste of a human being. So the school failed him? So his relatives failed him? So his community failed him? So the world failed him? HE FAILED HIMSELF. Every single person on this planet has been depressed at one time or another and so now it seems it?s even fashionable to be depressed and have a ?rough life?. Despite it all, there is NO reason for a person to do this type of thing to anyone, here in the U.S. or anywhere else on the planet.
