Owen Bradley posted a very thought provoking article about what he experienced as a music educator after seeing the movie August Rush .   His questions and statments made me think quite a bit about the future and current state of music education and technology.   So as usual?I wrote? and wrote? and wrote?. in his comment section.  You know WRITING really does clarify thought! What Mind-boggling Web 2.0 Application Should I Try Next?
2007-12-04 01:07:00
One of the technology shifts (change of paradigms) I am championing is the emergence into a web 2.0 world from a web 1.0 world (I know some of you techies loathe this concept: web 2.0? sorry, but it really is descriptive and useful).  That is, taking information from a single point of view and/or stale state, into an interactive, collaborative, and exciting state.  In the old days? (say ? pre-2001), the webmaster was the almighty ?gate keeper? of knowledge.  They had to post something for people to know about and if it wasn?t posted?we?ll you never knew about it.  Now with informational bursting tools like RSS, blogs, wikis, and self-tagged informational items, users of web 2.0 technologies (whether they know they are using them or not) are finding themselves immersed in a matrix of connectivity, usability, and explorability (coining a new word here!).  Much of this new matrix is self-directed, self-expandable, community-directed, community-expandable, ...

Revisiting Ning, The Free Community Social Network For Anything
2007-12-01 04:56:00
The trend in informational and communication technology is very exciting at this point in time, especially if you?re in the forefront of what?s happening.  I signed up for a Ning account over a year ago, but did not do much with it.  At the time, I was becoming heavily involved with WordPress.  I knew the time would come though, when I revisited Ning as it has so much to offer. ScreenShot: Discussing things with future PMEA District 5 president Travis Weller , we began to formulate ideas as to how we could best build an interactive site that would allow the PMEA members a place to discuss and interact with each other in a semi-private setting.   After bouncing forth ideas, I suggest that we consider Ning as a possibility.   It may just be the ?ticket?. Ning will allow us to create a private community that will provide the opportunity for posting notes, discussing items in forums and provide an arena to share photos, videos and other ty...

The Coolest Christmas Snowglobe Flash Animation
2007-11-30 03:34:00
I remember seeing this a few years ago and it still is amazingly entertaining to me.  It reminds of Little Computer People, a game from 1985 on the Commodore 64.  It was originally written as an advertisement for getsomesleep.com (which I believe is now defunct). SnapShot: This animation goes on and on with the people getting into fights, the snowman eating the snowman maker, fist fights, ski jumping, and an old man yelling out the windows.  If you wait long enough the old man will sleep walk into the glass and when you?ve had enough, you can just grab the globe (with your mouse) and shake it up causing all the people to fly around, screaming, and tumbling.   It?s hysterical!  Check it out here and get it for your desktop or sent it to friends: http://ww12.e-tractions.com/snowglobe/glo be.htm You?ll need flash to make it work.  There are links that allow you to send it to a friend and you can even download it to your computer.  Either way...

Save Money On Your Cell Phone 411 Calls, Google And Live Search 411 -No Cha
2007-11-26 09:39:00
These services are just way too cool, work well, and will save you money, so I have to tell you about them! If you are on the road with cell in hand or anywhere that you have phone service, you can dial Google 411 to have it lookup business numbers for you (sorry not residential yet!). Rather than pay your cell companies outragageous 411 charge when looking for a business or certain types of information -try Google 411. Dial 1-800-GOOG-411. I find stuff like this amazing and ultimately better for all us, maybe it will help make up for the increase in gas prices (save $.99 on a 411 call go 10 miles further down the road with the money you saved)! Microsoft also has a competing product, Live Search 411, and can be reached by dialing 1-800-CALL-411. From Google: Search for businesses by name or category. Can?t stand typing? GOOG-411 will understand your voice and find the business you?re looking for. Search by name ("Giovanni?s pizza") or category ("Pizza"). Connect to the business dir...

Should We Utilize Technology In The Music Classroom? Questions To Ask First
2007-11-13 16:21:00
I write quite a bit about music and technology at mustech.net.  A number of music educators think that ?music technology? only pertains to technology that employs MIDI or is directly is related to audio in some way.  The truth is that music teachers need to be versed in a variety of computer-related technologies that apply to making music or teaching music in a classroom.   Many of the technologies used in music classrooms aren?t ?music technology? in the strict sense of the phrase.  For example: using a LCD projector isn?t really ?music technology? but it can be a catalyst for making your teaching more exciting and effective.  Understanding how to use Microsoft EXCEL, or any other spreadsheet software,  isn?t ?music technology? but it can make the administration part of your job much easier and consequently allow you more time to teach and plan. Before I use or employ any type of technology,  I ask myself the following question...

Freeware Ear Training, Solfeggio Program For Windows And Linux
2007-11-08 17:28:00
There are a number of great online programs that offer ear training/solfeggio type of exercises.  GNU Solfege allows you to have ear training exercises with you all the time for FREE.  When I first found this software I was ecstatic.  We have used a number of software packages in the past for our students, Practica Musica, Mac GAMUT, etc. and they do a fine job.  GNU offers similar experiences, though not as aesthetically pretty, for no cost. This is the kind of software you need to put on your school computers and in your school?s computer lab.  It costs nothing and all you need is a set of speakers or headphones with the computer to make it work. This software offers the following features: training with melodic and harmonic intervals chord identify scale identify singing practice (limited) melodic dictation harmonic dictation rhythmic dictation and more All in all it?s a pretty nice freeware package. 2007-11-06 20:24:00
The second Cease and Desist letter from Universal Edition, put a stop to one of the best efforts I?ve seen to put expired copyrighted scores into the hands of those that don?t have the means to acquire them otherwise.  On Saturday October 13, 2007, another ?library? was forced to close their doors to the public. I don?t blame Feldmahler, the project leader for the group, for his decision though.  He doesn?t have the time or the resources to do what Universal Edition is demanding of him.  I?m not one to go against international copyright law, or ours for that matter, but this whole thing just reeks of the ?big guy? squashing the ?little man? again.  Just when we had a little light of hope?where is the good news?  The world has lost access a legitimate treasure trove of music information with the closing of this site.  The people of imslp.org did nothing wrong and WERE very concerned about protecting copyright(s). I sincerely hope that one of the la...

Where Has The Time Gone? Reflections Of A Music Teacher

Well..MusTech.net is back AND, well we?re back!
2007-11-02 03:54:00
Wow!  What a tumultuous four days! I moved mustech.net from ardenthosting to bluehost?  it was akin to having a root canal.  The whole reason for the move was the popularity of mustech.net?it was eating up too much bandwidth and my old host wasn?t in the price range I was looking for to move up, granted they are amazing and I?m keeping a few of my other sites with them still. Here are some of the highlights: Had to acquire a new host? Had to change the DNS servers Still waiting to for full DNS propagation  (I cheated, so I could get to my site and have it work using the HOSTS file and bypassed the DNS altogether) Had to migrate wordpress from one host to another?this is where the grief really started Exported the wordpress sql (the guts of this site) Copied my other files to bluehost Changed some config files and imported the sql file?all was well, NOT!  Due to different version of SQL and competing character encoding schemes (Latin, Swedish and UTF)...

The great Non-Traditional music class experiment
2007-10-25 04:17:00
Well, time to put my ?money where my mouth is??I have transformed my 2nd block ?A? day class into a non-traditional music class.  This was done mostly out of necessity and desperation (the father of invention?).  When we had registration last year I was pleased to see that my 2nd jazz ensemble was overflowing with students.  Eager to start the year, I began the plan for a jazz journey- to my horror, when the students arrived they all played guitar or drums (except for a few band instruments) so I knew that I couldn?t have a traditional jazz band. I have been an advocate of ?teach what walks through the door? for some time now- championing the cause that if we do not accept entry-level students into our band programs, we are doomed to extinction or worse yet- relegated to the ?dumping ground? of the guidance department.  Now for the experiment: I have set this class up to be project based.  We are running the class as a sort of reverse music theory class.&nbs...

Progression Guitar Composition Software: Review And Thoughts
2007-10-22 02:50:00
I was sent a copy of the guitar software Progression to evaluate a couple of weeks ago.  This software is made by Notion Music and hopes to gain the acceptance of guitar composer hopefuls.  I used the software over a period of a few days in order to familiarize myself with the product and learn it?s intricacies.  The cost of this software is around $100.00 U.S. (list $149.00 U.S.). Progression does not attempt to be a full blown composition program like Finale, Sibelius or its? sister product, Notion 2.0.  This software is more of a singer/player/songwriter type of composition software.  It focuses primarily on rhythm and lyrics, however you can add plenty of staves to accompany whatever types of instruments you might like to include in your budding composition.
