Music Advocacy; Is It Just A Waste Of Our Time?
2007-10-04 00:30:00
Our we wasting a time with music advocacy and the current state of music education?  I posted a comment on Travis Weller?s site:  Composing Like Mad on his article entitled ?At 3:15 p.m., class is just beginning?? .  Jim Plamondon makes the argument and comments that ?people increasingly see music education as a bad investment, relatively speaking? and they might be right.?   He further states (within the context of his comment) that ?the effort currently being expended on music education advocacy is wasted?? In fairness to Jim, he has been working on a new type of keyboard that allows you to enter music notes in pattern based way that allows for an easier transfer of ?finger memory? to different keys when running scales and playing chords (not unlike guitarists and the patterns on strings) and offers his own solution(s) as to how to get a better ?return on our investment? as educators.   I have to read more about what he i...

The Importance Of Going Places, Public Relations And Getting Feedback
2007-09-26 22:28:00
On Monday we took the Grove City College Marching Wolverine Band to one of the many festivals that we attend each year.  This was not a festival that we have attended in the past.  Typically, the band heads south from GCC and attends many of the bigger Pittsburgh area festivals and marching shows.  On Monday, we headed east to the Allegheny-Clarion Valley school district. It was great to arrive at Allegheny-Clarion High school and see the rural school setting.  It?s nestled in a valley between and among the many hills of the area.   The football field laid un-surrounded by fences, open and directly in front of the school.   As a matter of fact there weren?t any bleachers.  But, there were hundreds of people who brought their lawn chairs and sprawled out over every inch of the low rise hill on the home side of the field. There were a number of high school bands at the festival that ranged in size from jus...

Vic Firth Percussion: Setting The Example Of How A Music Industry Manufactu
2007-09-21 05:57:00
Of all the great music industry sites that are available on the web, very few can compare to what Vic Firth offers in the way of educating those who use their products (and for that matter -those that use their competitor?s products as well!).  If you are a budding percussionist or a professional, Vic Firth offers free educational materials that will make you better.   Sure they want you to buy their products, but they want you to be able to use them right as well!  Vic Firth offers a ?second to none? array of free materials to be used by students, performers and educators alike.  I?ve used their free materials for years in my percussion methods course at the college and can tell you they are top rate, first class and indispensable. With regard to the realm of Snare Drum Studies, they offer an excellent guide to learning the 40 rudiments.  Norm Weinberg?s WebRhythms not only boast a progressive way to learn rhythms, but also include online metronome goa...

How Do We Define The Success Of Our Educational Programs?
2007-09-19 22:41:00
The following was a collaborative effort and appeared in the program of the 12th Annual Mercer Mustang Band Show on Saturday, September 8, 2007.  The article was written by Travis J. Weller (Band Director, Mercer High School) and Michelle Morris (Assistant Director, Mercer High School). Travis and Michelle wrote about a number of extremely relevant and timely questions, especially with regard to arts in the schools.  I was literally taken aback when I saw something as bold and thought provoking as the contents of this article emblazoned on the front two pages of their band program for the show.   This was a great way to reach the hundreds if not 1000+ people that were at the show.  I was talking with Travis last year at a music conference about that very idea and it was great to see it in action.  I think there is a little room in every program that we put out for our programs for advocacy items like this (not everyone has ...

Spiral Frog: Ad-supported Music Comes Of Age, An In-depth Review
2007-09-18 06:51:00
Spiral Frog provides an ?almost free? online music service?  The registration was quick, the download for the manager took 7 seconds, the active X install took 14 seconds, all the music you could ever want to listen to? PRICELESS -err?. AD-SUPPORTED.   Since it officially opened for business yesterday, Spiral Frog has become the new internet ?buzz? and latest rage.  You can tell it has become popular because their current server speeds are less than ?stellar? due to the large amounts of Internet traffic that is now being directed to them.  Navigation of their site has been slow lately? After registering for free and logging-on , I noticed that I had 29 days left to ????  After clicking on the link, I found that in order to keep my membership active I will have to ?answer a few easy questions? every 30 days to keep my membership.  This amounts to a hassle in my book and I guess I?...

Running My Marching Band Rehearsal With Bluetooth!
2007-09-17 03:36:00
It had to happen?Bluetooth meets Marching Band !  Over the summer, I went a little gadget crazy and purchased a Motorola DC800 stereo bluetooth gateway and a NaviPlay stereo bluetooth adapter.  When you clicked on the links, you probably said ?Why on earth did you spend $300 on those contraptions to beat up on the marching field?? Here?s the thing- I spent a grand total of $60 for BOTH! I have been keeping my eye on them ever since they made their debut in Radio Shack last year (at full price).  Being a technology realist (no, really?) I knew that the world of bluetooth was still at least a generation away from making it to the mainstream.  After all, look around and all you see are those little bluetooth earpieces- hardly scratching the surface of it?s potential.  With the advent of the A2DP stereo bluetooth profile, there are a whole host of great handsfree stereo options on the way. Now for the application: I use the setup to ?run? my marching band rehears...

Bloggers: A New Way To Get A Rush Of Blog Traffic Through Syndication Or Ju
2007-09-17 02:11:00
I?ve found a great new way to syndicate your blog and help drive targeted traffic to your site.  You can see it in action on the right side of my site http://www.mustech.net. It?s called Blog Rush.  Similiar to Sphere, which you can open by clicking on the Sphere link at the top of any my posts, it provides related information about topics that would be of interest to you readers.  Like Blogmad and BlogExplosion it builds upon the concept of link exchanges.  Blog Rush will list the name of your post and create a clickable link back to your site in a nice looking widget. I am very excited about this free possibility as it builds upon people who link from your site or use your Blog Rush I.D. ? the earlier you get this up and running the more effective it will be for you as it will target more traffic on those that join from your link.  It?s one of the easiest and potentially most effective tools I?ve seen in a while for syndicating your information...

Green Portable Media Lovers Take Note: Hand-cranked Media Players Now Shipp
2007-09-13 15:48:00
Wow, here is an electronic gadget that I would have never thought? The wind-up, portable, super duper, EMP-MX71 Eco Media Player: This little guy has 2GB (or 1 GB, reports vary) of Ram built in and a slot for a SD card.  It can play mp3, mp4, avi, wmv and mpg files.  1 minute of cranking provides 40 minutes of operational time and power (you can charge your cell phone from it)!  It includes a FM Radio (able to record FM broadcasts), stereo in line jack, voice recorder, photo viewer and USB port for quick charging and transferring files. For a ?first of it?s kind?, it looks loaded and no doubt will be pretty high on the ?cool meter?.  It is a little pricey at $300+ U.S. dollars? the cost of a high end iPod and these just went on sale on September 10th so you can exptect a price drop in the coming months.  However, if you can get your hands on one now I?m sure you?ll be the talk until the next cool thing comes along.  It will be inter...

2007-09-09 05:42:00
I?ve been using Flickr  quite a bit lately.  I?ve decided to use it as the core online photo service for distributing our marching band photos to everyone who wants them.  Flickr allows you to upload 100 megabytes of photos per month and share them with the world for free.  In addition, you can do amazing things with Flickr like share your photos through email or an RSS feed.  It?s the ease of use of Flickr that was the deciding factor in choosing them. Here is an example of an embeded Flickr Stream of our band show at Carnegie Mellon today: [CANNOT SHOW FLASH BASED FLICKR RSS SHOW IN RSS CLICK THE LINK TO SEE IT!] There are a number of great Wordpress plugins for Flickr as well.  Check out this great articlefrom Mashable about 50+ Media related Wordpress plugins.  If you haven?t looked at Flickr and are a photo fanatic, I would encourage you to check it out today! Brad Volek On Being The GCC Band President
2007-09-06 22:07:00
I asked our current marching band president, Brad Volek, to write a little bit about his experience this year as the college band president.  One thing you will notice while reading this article is that Brad doesn?t let any ?grass grow under his feet??   -J. Pisano ************************** ?It?s the middle of May at the end of my sophomore year at Grove City College. I walk into band rehearsal a little nervous this day because the band is electing officers for next year and I?m in the running for president. The election results are read at the end of rehearsal and I have been elected. I?m ecstatic at the thought of this opportunity. Then it hits me ? I?m band president, I?m in charge of 200 people?..now what? The first thing I had to do was to figure out what exactly the Grove City College Band President actually does. The band president is charged with coming up with the schedule for all four days of band camp which include a band-wide afte...

Music Education Blogging: A Challenge!
2007-09-01 16:48:00
The great folks at the Music Educator?s Network have issued a challenge: In light of this I invite every reader to join me in my challenge to myself: I WILL BLOG! I will write at least one post per month. With each school year comes new ideas, new challenges, and a new ?to do? list. Won?t you join me in harnessing the power of a blogging community of music educators? I KNOW this is a great idea.  If nothing else, writing clarifies thought and expands your thinking pattern(s).  Blogging will do that and so much more for you and your students.  Since I started blogging a year ago, I have had almost 100,000 unique hits at mustech.net and over 200 hundred discussion points with people on this blog.  I?ve grown tremendously from those conversations and it has sparked further curiosity? In my opinion it?s a win-win for everyone involved in the process.  Yes, many times people do not agree with me about a topic but isn?t that the point of an...

Guitar Tuner With Chord Finder And A Pitch Pipe: Qwik Tune GP1
2007-08-30 01:43:00
When I was browsing the contents of the Pittsburgh?s most famous big-little music store this summer, Pianos -n- Stuff, I came across this little gem of a tuner: It?s called the Qwik Tune GP1 Guitar Professor and is an electronic guitar tuner, pitch pipe and chord finder all in one.   You can find these at most online music stores for under $15.00 US. I?ve used it extensively and it?s very handy and accurate.  Not only does it include references to standard major and minor chords but also 7ths and 9ths -over 250 chords in all. If you?re a part-time guitar player like me and are constantly finding yourself without your chord book, this little tuner is pretty awesome and you can keep it?s small enough to keep anywhere. Fanfares And Academic Regalia
2007-08-28 00:15:00
This article is from MUSicTECHnology.net  ~Copyright 2007, J. Pisano/mustech.net Today?s opening convocation , at Grove City College, started off with a FANFARE?trumpet fanfare that is (did you notice the bold print...).   Every year we start the opening convocation with a 7 trumpet fanfare that announces the procession of the academics from across the quad. When the procession arrives at the chapel, the trumpets lead the procession down the center aisle and announce the beginning of the ceremony from the front of the chancel area. As we were progressing today, I thought it might be fun to explore the meanings about academic regalia worn at all of these types of ceremonies in today's post.  All official academic ceremonies such as graduations will have the teachers/professors all ?fussied up? in some type of robe/garment.  The visitors love to see the regalia and those that have to be in the pagentry&n...

Marching Band: Kennywood Park Or Bust!
2007-08-26 16:48:00
This article is from MUSicTECHnology.net  ~Copyright 2007, J. Pisano/mustech.net   Marching Band has it?s perks?   Today we take the band to Kennywood Park , a well known amusement park in Pittsburgh, PA.  This year the Mighty Grove City Wolverines are marching 171 strong, including 30 fronts.  Although many big state universities have bands almost double this size, as far as we know, there are no colleges under 3000 that march as many as we do.  Our band varies in size from year to year from 160 to over 200. We march 6 across with the percussion in the middle.  Instrumentally we effectively have two full bands separated by the percussion.  This allows for a consistent sound no matter where the listener may be.  The GCC wolverines are led by 6 herald trumpets sporting the GCC colors and insignia off their bells.  This makes for great e?spirit de corp and adds to the ?pomp?. Kennywood park is particularly fun&nbs...
