Free Music Education Resources From The U.S. Army and Navy
2007-07-17 03:37:00 This article is from MusTech.net ~Copyright 2007 MusTech.net and J. Pisano About three years ago I attended a Jazz Ambassador?s concert in Chicago at the Midwest Clinic. At it, the director spoke of a number of resources that they make available free to the public. One of their offerings was a complete Jazz chart entitled Porch Swingin; we played it at one of last year?s concert. There are a number of free resources including lesson plans, music charts, articles and other resources that would be of interest to any music educator (not just U.S. music educators!). The U.S. military bands? also offer requestable free CDs of most of their literature. As you may know, these bands ARE the heritage of our own concert band programs in the U.S. and you can be sure that the recordings they offer are of the highest qualities both in musicianship and audio fidelity. The U.S. Army Field Band Resources are found here and here is a list of some of their offerings: The Legacy of Aaron CoplandA reco... More About: Education , Music , Free Music , Free
How Long Is A Gigastack Of Compact Discs?
2007-07-12 08:54:00 This article is from MusTech.net ~Copyright 2007 MusTech.net and J. Pisano Understanding just how much a kilo-something, mega-this, giga-what or terra-anything is can be quite confusing. In my classes, I?ve found, when talking about megabytes and gigabytes, using an illustration can be quite helpful. Most new computers today have in excess of 1 gigabyte of memory installed and today?s newest hard drives are terabytes in size (raid devices -in the petabytes!). In order to better understand the immensity of these numbers, I?ve made a comparison sheet using distance and the thickness of a standard CD as an example. I hope you find it entertaining, if not mind-boggling! FYI- the prefixes, in order from smallest to largest, are: deca, hecto, kilo, mega, giga, terra, peta, exa, zeta, yotta?yotta, yotta! ***************************************** ************* The thickness of a CD is approximately 1.2 mm or .048 inches. [Not a stack] 1 CD = 1.2 mm or .048... More About: Long , Compact , Compa , Disc , Gigas

Guitar Hero II, Review And Thoughts
2007-07-07 18:07:00 This article is from MusTech.net ~Copyright 2007 MusTech.net and J. Pisano As a music educator, I find Guitar Hero II to be a particularly interesting piece of software/hardware. I recently purchased this game for my son and I was able to get some ?hands on? experience with it. Here are my first observations: The soundtracks are original and awesome The graphics are good-looking and great The interface (read guitar) is well done The game is addictive (even for one who plays the guitar like me) All those things being said what makes the game ?addictive? and ?playable?? For many non-musicians these types of games are the first time they get the thrill of being in a band and ?creating? music. When you play this game on the harder levels it really does seem that you are playing every note; the designers made it that way. The very fact that you have to strum each note and ?fret? each note gives you that feeling of musical creation. When playing this game you c... More About: Review , Thoughts , Guitar Hero

MidiPiano: Freeware Midi Piano Player, Synth And More
2007-06-12 04:39:00 I?ve recently come across a freeware midi piano player that is more interesting and useful than some of the others I?ve used in the past. This one is worth the download. Midi Piano is Windows Freeware . It allows you to open any midi file and watch it?s keyboard ?play? the keys. You may assign any of the midi channels to the left or right hand to view individual parts and mute unwanted tracks/channels depending on your needs or focus with this visual, virtual keyboard This software also allows you to use the PC keyboard as a music keyboardl. With it, you may assign any of the 128 General Midi Sounds to the PC keys for listeining and playback. Additionally, you may also record a MIDI file of what you play using the software and playback or save it. This software will also allow you to plug any midi input device(s) into the software and have it?s output sent to any installed midi devices in your compu... More About: Player , Layer
Parsons Code: Finding Music By Melodic Contours and Musipedia
2007-06-06 20:06:00 When I was at Binghamton University in 1996, I was introduced to a very curious musical tome that was a directory for finding music by knowing whether the next sequenced note of a composition (or syllable of a song) was the same (R for ?repeat?) went up (U) or down (D) in pitch. I had never seen anything like this before and was amazed by how efficient it was for finding the titles/words of compositions that I did not know the name of (or recall) -only the music or ?melodic contours?. Remembering a ?tune? and ?not the words? seems to one of our global plights as human beings. This dilemma is caused by the hemispheric division of the brain and us not being able to re-connect them simultaneously to retrieve the whole of the complete thought, or in this case the words/title we associate with the music. This also happens with ?names? and ?faces? (I always remember a face -but not the name syndrome). This is why Parson?s Code an... More About: Music , Sons , Lodi , Parsons

Scott Ditullio: Why I Teach? Reprise
2007-06-01 20:59:00 Guest Author Series #3: Why Do I Teac h? Reprise Author: Scott DiTullioProfession: Director of Bands, Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District, PA????????????????????????. Thanks for reading and posting about my article. I guess when Dr. Creasap first asked me to respond to a question a few months back, that it really did get me thinking about "Why I Teach." As I have continued my personal education, I've become a better teacher. I remember sitting in all the undergraduate methods courses and saying to myself, I?m ready to take the next step, get me in front of the class. I truly feel that energy and excitement comes from having great teachers, which were excited about what they were doing. I was fortunate to have those great teachers from elementary through college, without them, I?m not sure I would be where I am today. I still remember the talk with my father when I said I didn?t want to go to college that I wanted to be like him and work in th... More About: Rise

2007-05-29 19:03:00 Hello friends,   ; Just a quick not to let you know that I won?t be keeping the same RAPID posting and change rate I have for the past 6 months. I have a number of major research projects I am working on as well as I plan to spend a lot more time with my family over the summer months!   ; I?ve decided that I am going to reduce the amounts of post from 5-6 a week to 2-3, with the goal being a 2 minimum. I?ve been able to keep all my other goals for this news forum and website, so I believe that I should be able to do this, regardless of all the outside projects I have to work with. I am going to resume the normal post rate mid to late August (Just in time for Band Camp!).... Travis Weller: Music Composition, A Love Affair With Sound
2007-05-27 02:49:00 I am a high school band director that loves sound. I love to teach it. I love to manipulate it. I love to listen to it. I also love to create it. The invitation to write about something that I am very passionate about is an honor, and also very humbling. As far as composition goes, I am still in my infancy when I consider what I have written compared to the likes of Alfred Reed, W. Francis McBeth, and Clifton Williams. Even compared to the current composers led by Camphouse, Boysen, Hilliard, Hazo, Gillingham, Giroux, Mahr, Melillo, Stamp, Ticheli?..it would not be proper to place myself on it. I write music to honor those composers whose music speak to and inspire me to grow and develop as an educator and a musician, and to share my voice with a new audience that will hopefully inspire a future composer. Over the Christmas break of 2003, I made a personal decision to resume composing so that I could keep an active role in music as an educator, and writing wa... The Top 25 Music Education and Music Technology Blogs As Listed By Technora
2007-05-25 06:13:00 AN URGENT CALL: HELP ME COMPLETE THIS LIST! Well, I have to tell you I honestly tried to put together this list but? we?re awful as music educators getting the word out about our blogs. There are only 133 out of 70+million blogs in the world labeled as ?music education? in Technorati. Of those 133, about half of them are ?fake? blogs or ?splogs? and have nothing to do with music education. So, graciously, taking the the number ?66? for real ?music education blogs?, we find that those listed on Technorati make up a mere .00000008% of the blogs in the world. Woot! Interestingly enough, I started this topic with the idea of only considering Music Education blogs. I couldn?t find enough relevant blogs within the results while searching for the term ?Music Education? so I added ?Music Technology ? to the ?mix? and expanded the search. I still couldn?t fill the list! Now? I know that there are a few... More About: Blogs , Music Technology
What Is RSS and Atom? RSS 101: Understanding The Feed Monsters
2007-05-24 06:44:00 RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. One of it?s earlier standards also referred to it as Rich Site Summary; either description is now used interchangeably. Syndication can be defined as sharing information or the distribution and extension of data. So, in a nut shell, RSS is a standard that allows us to easily and quickly share frequently updated data to, literally, millions of people over the Internet. There is another variant of this type of syndication known as the Atom Syndication Format -Atom for short, and is another very similar type of syndication standard. For the purposes of this article, I will be referring to RSS feeds specifically, but the Atom Style Feed works very similarly and virtually everything that can be done with an RSS feed can also be done with an Atom Feed. So what is an RSS FEED? An RSS Feed in it?s basic format is a ?table of contents? for the information appearing on your website. It contains a text li... More About: Understand , Standing , Under
Writing A Research Paper, Or Looking For Scholarly Articles? Try Google Sch
2007-05-22 21:57:00 Just a quick note today? There are many reasons to search the Internet for scholarly articles. The problem with actually finding what you are looking for is that a simple search on most search engines will return a bunch of ?junk? results in addition to what you are really looking for. Sorting through all of the ?junk? can be very time consuming. Google Scholar helps solves this problem. By using Google Scholar you can weed out non-academic websites and information while you search. Google Scholar is one of the first things I show my students in our introductory technology classes..[more] This is an excerpt from a great article/post @ MUSicTECHnology.netVISIT MUSTECH.NET TODAY- Don't miss a beat! Add A Little Fanfare To Your Commencement
2007-05-19 06:38:00 "Every year I have between five and eight trumpeters play for Baccalaureate and Comm encement . The trumpet fanfares add a regal mood and ?air of importance? to the events that not only look and sound nice, but also is a visual boon for the music department. Many high schools and colleges have the traditional concert band or wind ensemble play for commencement. Some areas may have an organ or even a CD (not anyone?s first choice) play. Regardless of what you may do, it is a relatively easy thing to get a cohort of trumpet players together to do this and it adds a special flavor to the event(s). My recipe for the trumpeters at our Commencement and Baccalaureate: First, early on, I stress the importance to the undergraduates of performing for the seniors, creating a seriousness about the importance of the fanfare group. I talk about how they will appreciate the fanfares when it?s their turn to ?walk?. I also have the advantage... More About: Music Education , Little , Cement

2007-05-17 14:10:00 Guest Author Series #1: Why Do I Teac h?Author: Scott DiTullioProfession: Director of Bands, Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District, PA????????????????????????. "I recently co-wrote an article with Dr. Susan Creasap from Morehead State University, for the NBA Journal. As I?ve reflected more on the subject and have talked to more college students about what I do, I wanted to share some thoughts with you also. Why do I teach? As I sit and listen to the news every night and hear about all of the violence, I often ask myself the same question. I hope I am making a difference in my students. I want to instill in them, the great opportunities that I had as a student in school. My music teachers were always the ones that went above and beyond their daily duties. They were still in the buildings well after everyone left for the day. I do the same for my students, as most others are out of the building by 3:30, I am always one of the last teachers to leave (5:30 or later). I?m always tryi...
Update to Wordpress 2.2 Engine Complete!
2007-05-17 05:40:00 "Update : I have finished the change over to Wordpress 2.2. It did not go as smoothly as I wanted nor as fast. For those interested in Wordpress?. Wordpress 2.2 and the K2 theme do not play nicely together as of yet. Wordpress incorporated the widgets into their theme which destroys the ability to use the K2 sidbar modules without a code workaround. I also found that my theme was not compatible with the new version of K2, so I had to tweak a bunch of things to get it back up and operating? Long story short we?re back!" A Bloggable Moment: Visual learners in the Bandroom
2007-05-16 05:48:00 Excerpt about this great article/post from MUSicTECHnology.net: "Today confirmed something that I guess I?ve always known- the vast majority of my students are visual learners (Dunn, Thies, & Honigsfeld, 2001). After 18 years as a high school teacher, I certainly have been through my share of professional development and the study of learning styles, but it is only recently that I have made a concerted effort to bring learning theory into my daily teaching practice. As a band director, I am always focused on my next performance. There have been countless times that I have ?rote taught? rhythms (It goes like this, kids?.) because of time constraints or some other pressing matter. In the past few years, I have dedicated myself to teaching concepts and assessing whether my students have learned the material.
