MySQL JDBC 5.0.5 bug with TIME column and midnight
2008-03-21 22:24:00
Coldfusion 8 comes bundled with the mysql commercial jdbc driver 5.0.5 (or it did with my install anyway).  I just ran into a bug that results in this error: java.sql.SQLException: Value '00:00:00 can not be represented as java.sql.Time The bug is the date / time parsing interprets midnight (00:00:00) as illegal for the TIME type.  [More]

Portsmouth Most Walkable NH City
2008-03-20 22:09:00
I love Portsmouth , NH.  I can't imagine living anywhere else really.  I just read about one more reason to like it in a new report from prevention.com.  They ranked 500 cities for walking, walking friendliness, and actual walkers vs drivers.  Portsmouth topped the list for NH, and game in 58th nationally.  Not bad for a city of about 23,000 people.  One thing I didn't know: "Portsmouth has the state's highest percentage of mass transit riders and one of its lowest cars-to-household ratings."  Of course, I think Portsmouth could do better, and that doesn't bode well for other big cities such as Rochester that didn't fair well at all.  Durham wasn't even on the list, which means it was either too smal, or the transit system didn't offset for the sprawl of campus and downtown. live.com hates me
2008-03-19 21:12:00
In looking at my traffic for this blog and other sites one thing that jumps out is the lack of traffic from live.com. I have submitted my website to live.com many times over the past year and have had no luck in getting into their index until just last week. Now I am in the index, but only my home page. [More]

Pit Bull vs Porcupine
2008-03-12 21:20:00
Just got this via email.  OMG.  Full Image Here A Pit bull decided he would battle a Porcupine in back of his house in Southern California. But being both brave and STUPID, he ultimately learned the hard way that he can't always win. No matter how tough you are. A vet sedated the dog, and then removed a total of 1,347 quills. The dog survived, and hopefully learned a valuable lesson. Now tell me you had a bad day!!!

Advertising Generator
2008-03-12 18:54:00
A friend sent me this link for an advertising generator. Clever use of flash, and fun retro interface (though not terribly intuitive at times). Pretty darn funny.  I enjoyed making a whole campaign, but I thought the timesheets were even funnier.  Especially the hours logged under getting friends for facebook.

A client of ours had moved their site from one server to another recently.  The site was working fine, however after moving it to another similarly configured server it started throwing the following error on every single query. Error Executing Database Query. [More]

New Atlanta Announces Free Open Source BlueDragon
2008-03-10 14:57:00
Some interesting news this morning.  On a list I read someone had posted a link to an announcement regarding New Atlanta open-sourcing their J2EE server. More specifically creating an edition that will be open-sourced.  I thought that posting it must have been a mistake as the date on it was for Wednesday, and I would assume that they were going to wait until CFUnited Europe to make the announcement.  Then Mark Dew noticed that Vince Bonfanti blogged on it today, which confirms that New Atlanta wanted the news out before the conference.  Their FAQ is a bit light, and suggests that more details will be available, as well as the actual open source software by CFUnited in D.C. apple shows it's crappy side - explaining no flash on iphone
2008-03-07 03:28:00
I was just commenting on Tech crunch regarding apples release of the iphone SDK.  One thing first:  Iphone is cool tech.  Its sexy, and easy to use.  It offers little new, but its new version might.  That said... To sum up, apple said:  'if you want to sell your app on the iphone, you must sell through itunes, and apple will take 30% fee for doing the sale processing for you'. [More]

cf.Objective() is where it's at.
2008-03-04 20:04:00
I will probably doing a few of these themed images.  I am taking the photos from flickr, so if you put them up and creative commons, they are fair game.  Thanks to GrandpaDoug for this photo.  Make your own with my image generator.  This page has the full size LOLcf.Objective image. In this image I see Mark Drew and Simon Horwith, not sure who the other person is.  If someone comments with his name I will update. [More]

AIR VS Silverlight?
2008-02-26 15:04:00
Ok, I admit I am not very educated on Silverlight , but isn't this Techcrunch blog post comparing two different kinds of products?  I would think Silverlight VS Flex or Flash, but AIR?  Adobe flew the guy out to the release event... you would think he knew the difference after that.  Or if I am wrong maybe Adobe should have flown me out so I would know the difference :-) [More]

ImageDrawText Coordinates
2008-02-25 15:35:00
This was probably clear to other people, but the coordinates for ImageDrawText were a bit counter intuitive for me.  I expected that drawing text to 0,0 would have my text shown fully at the top left of the image. Point 0,0 would be the top and left point of my text.  However the text is rendered from the bottom, left point of your text area.  Thus setting coordinate 0,0 would usually result in most of the text being drawn above canvas.  So if you want your text to show up fully in the top left area, simply make an offset the size of the font size (default of 10). NH Adobe User Group Meeting - Monday
2008-02-22 16:09:00
I meant to blog about this before (details below).  I am not privy to what the special live event will be sharing, but I have my guesses.  I suspect this is happening at user group's around the country, so if you haven't already look up a group near you and check it out. Site Note: Faye from NH group mentioned to me that RSVP'ing is a good thing.  They buy food and such and it helps if they know how many are coming. If your heading to the NH group, I will see you there. [More]

Quick Notes
2008-02-19 15:51:00
I have been busy the past couple days migrating email over to a new google apps account for everyone here.  Been interesting, and as such I had to change my main google IM account.  People can now chat with me via jcyr@besavvy.com.   Yes, I know bots can find my email, but they already have it and gmail does a good job at filtering.  I am not going to hide and obfuscate my email just because other people are shit heads. Migrate email to Google Apps
2008-02-18 21:18:00
I recently had to under go a process of setting up our company with google apps or otherwise known as google for domains.  It is a really powerful set of email tools, however for those already using email it isn't as simple as we would wish it for moving everyone over.  Here are a couple of things to expect: [More]

Using CFDiv to bind text from form field to a div or span.

ColdFusion 8 just makes so many tasks easier.  Yesterday I was looking into doing something fun for a little project.  I wanted to type into a text field, and have it immediately show that text into a formated span tag somewhere else on the page. With CFDiv and bind its as easy as this: [More]

CF'rs playing Warcraft
2008-02-15 22:52:00
Any of my blog readers play World of Warcraft ?  I was just commenting on another blog about WOW and started thinking about guilds, long term players, real life friends, etc.  For me playing WOW is more fun when I know the people I am playing with.  My wife, my brother, my friends, etc.  We have a little guild and it has never grown enough for any viable end game content.  None of us are much of raiders (the ones that were have already left), so there isn't a lot of drive to make our guild bigger to participate in the end game content. Amazon S3 Downtime
2008-02-15 18:56:00
Anyone in Cold Fusion land using Amazon s S3 service for their apps?  Were you affected by the reported downtime today? I have seen comments that the downtime was a few hours and others that it was only a few minutes (from Twitter).  Seems like a great service, but in thinking of the downtime today it got me wondering how one would go from using S3 to transitioning to another cloud or perhaps a local storage system. Low Republican Turnout an Understatement
2008-02-13 14:54:00
In watching the news last night I saw a ticker on the bottom of the screen regarding the Washington DC primary results.  It showed some very low numbers for the Republican primary and I thought it must be a mistake.  After checking CNN this morning the numbers seem to be accurate.  Are there really that few Republicans in D.C.?  I know that many feel McCain has this already set and as such maybe no reason to even bother, but Huckabe only got 961 votes.  You would think more than 961 people would want to see him win.  After doing a bit of research it seems you must be registered as Republican for the DC primary to participate, which would help explain.  Still... Hackers, how I loathe you.
2008-02-04 16:30:00
Most of my sites are configured to email me any error messages they have.  Don't happen too often.  Except for the incredible volume of hacking attempts by some bot to insert a web address into one of my ID URL vars.  It doesn't work of course, but that still triggers an email to me. Over and over and over. Bah. Looks like they are just trying to see if they can embed PHP code into my sites and get it to execute. [More]

Superbowl Thoughts
2008-02-04 15:33:00
I don't watch football.  I am not really a big fan, though I do enjoy having friends over for the Superbowl .  Its a good excuse to get together, talk about the commercials and such.  Since I live in New Hampshire, I pretty much need to support the local team.  It would have been great to have them finish the year undefeated.  So I was of course disappointed in the game last night.  I have to say though, that the Giants deserved their win.  The Pats just couldn't protect Brady.  Defense couldn't sack Manning. What I am REALLY disappointed in though, is the crappy round of commercials.  My friends and I rated each commercial with a 1-5 rating.  Hoping in the end to report on the best commercials and worst.  However there were soooo many commercials and they were really sub par.  [More]

Skybus Review
2008-02-02 16:12:00
A couple of weeks ago my wife and I took a quick trip down to Florida.  We opted to use the new airline called Skybus.  Since it is a new airline I thought I would write up a quick review for others who may be thinking of using the airline and worried about it in some way. One thing to note is that Skybus lists their airports based on big named cities nearby.  That means that Boston, MA is actually Portsmouth, NH and Fort Myers, FL is actually Punta Gorda, FL.  30 to 50 min away.  If you are not prepared for doing a bit of traveling once you land you may be in trouble.  This may not be true for every city. CFUnited Hotel
2008-02-01 23:00:00
CFUnited just posted the information we need to be able to book the hotel room.  I recommend everyone do it sooner rather than later as it sounds like DC is pretty busy and odds are the hotels will all be booked.  The last few years I have forgotten to book the hotel until a few months from the event and that always lead me to having to get a room a mile away.  Aside from the cost of a taxi for transport it is very handy to be in the same hotel as other CFUnited attendees purely from a networking perspective.  Now that the conference is inside of DC there are a few hotels that are walking distance.  That will have us spread around a bit more thin for the after hours socializing, but I still think booking the hotel early is important.

My Top 11 CFUnited Announcement Possibilities
2008-01-28 20:11:00
The CFUnited Blog is teasing us about a big announcement coming this Wednesday.  I got to thinking about what it could be and here is my top 11 list in no particular order.  Feel free to comment below with your own. This years backpack will have not 1, not 2, but 4 more pockets and zippers. Conference sessions will start at 5am and end at 8pm to accommodate growing interest of the speakers. Due to popular demand sessions will start at 10am to give those with a hangover a fighting chance to attend. The new location for CFunited is announced - since Bush will be on vacation we will all be staying in the White House as long as we promise not to mess with their computers. The wildly anticipated CFUnited musical starring Tommy Lee Jones will perform a sneak peak at the keynote. Disney...
